Opis:
Heavy ion treatment planning uses an empirical scanner-dependent calibration relation between computed tomography (CT) numbers and ion range. Any deviation in the values of CT numbers will cause a drift in the calibration curve of the CT scanner, which can reduce the accuracy of treatment beam delivery. To reduce uncertainty in the empirical estimation of CT numbers, we developed a simulation that takes into consideration the geometry, composition, and physical process that underlie their measurement. This approach uses Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, followed by a simple filtered back-projection reconstruction. The MC code used is BEAMnrc/EGSnrc. With the manufacturer’s permission, we simulated the components (X-ray tube, associated filters and beam shapers) of a Siemens Emotion CT. We then generated an initial beam shape and spectra, and performed further simulations using the phantom with substitutes. We analyzed the resulting phase space file to calculate projections, taking into account the energy response of the CT detectors. Then, we applied a simple reconstruction algorithm to the calculated projections in order to receive the CT image.

Opis:
The overheating of the material is among major reasons for failures/damages to gas turbine blades throughout the entire process of operating aircraft turbine engines. The essential method of diagnosing condition of the blades is metallographic examination being however a destructive technique. The paper has been intended to discuss one of non-destructive testing (NDT) methods, i.e. the X-ray computed tomography (CT), and capabilities of applying it to diagnose changes in condition of gas turbine blades. ‘Tomography’ is a comprehensive term to define a set of diagnostic techniques to produce three-dimensional images that present cross-sections through detail items under scrutiny. The CT is a transmission diagnostic technique that allows layered models (images) of details to be acquired. Most commonly, it is used in research laboratories and throughout the process of the product quality inspection. The paper delivers findings of the preliminary investigation into the assessment of health/maintenance status of gas turbine blades by means of the X-ray computed tomography. The results gained have been successfully verified using the metallographic examination techniques. It has been found that the radiographic imaging method enables recognition of types, sizes, and locations of internal faults in the blades while generating three-dimensional images thereof. Presented are capabilities of the high-resolution X-ray inspection machine with computed tomography (CT), V/tome/x, furnished with a 300 kV tube, and the CT data processing capabilities of the VG Studio Max software solution, high-performance CT reconstruction included (using an optional module). At the same time work is under way with the X-ray tube for nanotomography with the 0.5 m resolution to examine, in particular, modern composite materials.

Opis:
Bite traces on fossilised bones can provide important information on predator-prey relations and interactions in ancient environments. In 2009, two new ichnotaxa, Linichnus serratus and Knethichnus parallelum, were introduced to develop the application of bite traces as an ichnological tool. Ichnotaxa defined by theropod bite traces can provide useful information for understanding feeding behaviour. However, objective interpretation of possible bite traces can be difficult using traditional visual inspection. In this study, the bite traces on a fossilised dinosaur bone were comprehensively examined by correlating traditional naked-eye in spection with computed tomography (CT) imaging, used to visualise the internal morphology of the bite traces and in particular, to clarify the appearance of one possibly healed bite trace. A forensic pathologist visually examined the bone with the aid of stereomicroscopy and a radiologist analysed the CT scans. Sixteen different scanner settings were used to optimise the CT parameters and avoid signal at tenuation, in the form of hypointense artefacts in the central trabeculated part of the bone fragment. The use of CT scanning provided information on internal morphology from the vicinity of the bite trace, including hyperdense zones, not identified using visual inspection alone. By applying the extended CT scale, the dense and radiopaque cortical bone layer could be clearly identified and applied as a pathomorphological marker to correctly distinguish non-healed from healed wounds. In conclusion, the authors demonstrate that external visual examination of trace fossils by ichnologists in combination with interior examination using CT imaging can be applied to characterise ichnotaxa defined by bite traces and potentially provide clues on ancient feeding behaviour.

Opis:
Minimally invasive procedures for the kidney tumour removal require a 3D visualization of topological relations between kidney, cancer, the pelvicalyceal system and the renal vascular tree. In this paper, a novel methodology of the pelvicalyceal system segmentation is presented. It consists of four following steps: ROI designation, automatic threshold calculation for binarization (approximation of the histogram image data with three exponential functions), automatic extraction of the pelvicalyceal system parts and segmentation by the Locally Adaptive Region Growing algorithm. The proposed method was applied successfully on the Computed Tomography database consisting of 48 kidneys both healthy and cancer affected. The quantitative evaluation (comparison to manual segmentation) and visual assessment proved its effectiveness. The Dice Coefficient of Similarity is equal to 0.871 ± 0.060 and the average Hausdorff distance 0.46 ± 0.36 mm. Additionally, to provide a reliable assessment of the proposed method, it was compared with three other methods. The proposed method is robust regardless of the image acquisition mode, spatial resolution and range of image values. The same framework may be applied to further medical applications beyond preoperative planning for partial nephrectomy enabling to visually assess and to measure the pelvicalyceal system by medical doctors.

Opis:
X-ray computed tomography (CT) can reveal internal, three-dimensional details of objects in a non-destructive way and provide high-resolution, quantitative data in the form of CT numbers. The sensitivity of the CT number to changes in material density means that it may be used to identify lithology changes within cores of sedimentary rocks. The present pilot study confirms the use of Representative Elementary Volume (REV) to quantify inhomogeneity of CT densities of rock constituents of the Boda Claystone Formation. Thirty-two layers, 2 m core length, of this formation were studied. Based on the dominant rock-forming constituent, two rock types could be defined, i.e., clayey siltstone (20 layers) and fine siltstone (12 layers). Eleven of these layers (clayey siltstone and fine siltstone) showed sedimentary features such as, convolute laminations, desiccation cracks, cross-laminations and cracks. The application of the Autoregressive Integrated Moving Averages, Statistical Process Control (ARIMA SPC) method to define Representative Elementary Volume (REV) of CT densities (Hounsfield unit values) affirmed the following results: i) the highest REV values corresponded to the presence of sedimentary structures or high ratios of siltstone constituents (> 60%). ii) the REV average of the clayey siltstone was (5.86 cm3) and (6.54 cm3) of the fine siltstone. iii) normalised REV percentages of the clayey siltstone and fine siltstone, on the scale of the core volume studied were 19.88% and 22.84%; respectively. iv) whenever the corresponding layer did not reveal any sedimentary structure, the normalised REV values would be below 10%. The internal void space in layers with sedimentary features might explain the marked textural heterogeneity and elevated REV values. The drying process of the core sample might also have played a significant role in increasing erroneous pore proportions by volume reducation of clay minerals, particularly within sedimentary structures, where authigenic clay and carbonate cement were presumed to be dominant.

Opis:
The paper presents possibilities of X-ray computed tomography (CT) application in view of representing selected features of carbonate rocks in a CT image. 72 sections of drill cores, approx. 1 m long each, were selected for tomographic examinations to obtain as reliable as possible results. The selected core material represents carbonate formations of various ages (from Palaeozoic to Upper Cretaceous), originating from boreholes situated in the Carpathian Foreland area. The interpretation of tomographic examinations was connected with a detailed sedimentological analysis of selected core sections, allowing to carry out direct comparisons, which of studied features and to what extent have disclosed in the CT images, and also whether this image can supplement or make the prepared descriptions more detailed. The presented information has a qualitative nature, i.e. referring mainly to descriptive features of the analysed carbonate rocks. Because of a limited size of the paper we have focused only on a few from numerous analysed features of carbonate rocks. The method of X-ray computed tomography (CT) can be very helpful at the analysis of various carbonate rocks features, such as structural and textural features, biogenic structures, porosity, and fracturing. It should be emphasised that this is a non-invasive method, providing a possibility to reproduce the CT image in various directions, without the necessity of mechanical interference in the rock material, resulting in the core destruction. Mummified siliceous sponges were examples of biogenic structures, which were best reflected in formations, which have been subjected to processes of selective dolomitization. In such type of carbonate rocks the sponge mummies were not dolomitized, while the basic material of the background was dolomitized. A very good representation of the structure in CT images was obtained for colonial hexacorals from the Scleractinia group, because many details of their skeleton structure are noticeable. Contrary to siliceous sponges the structure of corals is preserved much worse in the case, when the studied deposits were subject to diagenetic processes (such as dissolution, recrystallisation, or dolomitization). In addition, the analysis of various bioclasts, preserved in carbonate rocks, has shown a significant role both of the original mineral component building the skeletal elements of organisms (aragonite, high-magnesium calcite, lowmagnesium calcite), and of diagenetic processes history, directly affecting the condition of those components preservation. Based on the analysed materials it was found that porosity and fracturing are among best reflected features of carbonate rocks in the CT image. Open fractures, fractures filled with anhydrite and fractures filled with clay-marly material are generally well reflected in the CT image. Instead, fractures filled with calcite are variously recognisable, depending on the mineral composition of the rock background.
W artykule przedstawiono możliwości wykorzystania rentgenowskiej tomografii komputerowej (CT) pod kątem odzwierciedlenia wybranych cech skał węglanowych w obrazie CT. Do badań tomograficznych wytypowano 72 odcinki rdzeni wiertniczych o długości ok. 1 m każdy w celu uzyskania możliwie najbardziej wiarygodnych wyników.

One of the most common defects in carbon fibrereinforced plastics (CFRP) is porosity. Too much of those defectscould be serious problemsto mechanical properties, which directly take effect on elements safety, like aircrafts. Therefore, the evaluation of porosity is very important test. Microscopic observations are widely used as a quality instrument in materials and constructions inspections. Cross section image of a material is easy to prepare and analyse. Porosity of a carbon fibrereinforced plasticcan be clearly spot in such kind of images. Study shows that in the most cases porosity appear between layers of fibres , rather between fibres. Unfortunately, image from microscope is only 2D picture from a small representative region. Because of that, comparison of 2D image to a real porosity distribution in all volume of a material is very difficult. To verify 2D microscopic observation method is necessary to perform another kind of tests. In this article , authors focused on non-destructive (NDT) and destructive testing methods. 2D porosity images from light microscope were compared with three different testing methods: ultrasonic test (UT), computed tomography (CT) test and constituent content of composite materials standard test method according to ASTM D3171 – 15, procedure B. Porosity results obtained from dissolution of resin from the carbon-epoxy resin sample.

Introduction and aim. Computed tomography (CT) is the first imaging modality in the evaluation of children in case of patients with head injury in pediatric Emergency Departments (EDs). Radiological CT reports include not only lesions that are the main cause of the child’s complaints but also incidental findings. The objective of this study is to assess incidental findings observed in children who were admitted to the ED and had the head CT performed. Material and methods. This retrospective, cross-sectional study enrolled 644 children under the age of 18, from 1st January 2021 to 31st June 2021. Each child could have had one or more incidental findings in CT. Results. Among all CT studies, incidental findings were found in 279 out of 644 (43.32%) cases, of which 73 (11.34%) had both lesions detected incidentally and related to the trauma. Conclusion. Head CT is an incredibly useful tool in the assessment of some head emergencies. However, evaluation of the prevalence of incidental findings is difficult. Most of them require no specific further investigation. Pediatricians, who order CTs in children, must be prepared to interpret and communicate findings to families and introduce treatment in necessary situations.

Opis:
This article presents reconstruction methods applied to a (geometrically and physically) complex structural object with the use of RP and RT techniques. The methods are innovative due to their hybrid - multi-model and multi-material - approach to reconstruction, as well as the application of multiple technologies. An experimental analysis was conducted to verify the feasibility of rapid prototyping (RP) techniques in the reconstruction of complex internal structures using materials of diverse properties. Some RP techniques offer the possibility of discriminating between diverse objects through the use of different colours. Such models are well-suited for diagnostic purposes, for better visualisation of complex clinical problems, pathological alterations, etc. Nevertheless, they fail to fully reflect physical and mechanical properties of objects, which renders them useful in experimental analysis only to a limited extent. Their basic drawback is that they merely reflect geometrical features of the examined object. The methods discussed in the present article enable modelling multi-object structures in a single process based on the PolyJet Matrix technology and materials of different physical properties by means of a hybrid method. The article also describes the process of modelling complex anatomical structures of soft tissues and bones using models of the maxilla and the mandible as examples. The study is based on data acquired through standard computed tomography (CT).
