Opis:
The paper reports on a study designed to examine the relationship between the thickness of ego boundaries and attainments in FL pronunciation after a clearly structured form-focused practical course of phonetics. The research involved 45 first-year students of the Institute of English Studies in Wroclaw, Poland, who had attended around thirty 90-minute classes in phonetics. To measure the thickness of their ego boundaries, the Hartmann Boundary Questionnaire (HBQ) was administered. This permitted an examination of which particular types of ego boundaries are related to accuracy in foreign language (FL) pronunciation. The basis for comparing the pronunciation levels of the participants was the Pronunciation Attainment Test consisting of three parts: reading a passage and two vocabulary lists. Attest demonstrated that the differences between the pronunciation levels of the thick and thin ego boundary learners were nonsignificant. However, further statistical analysis (Pearson correlation) showed a positive weak correlation between 3 types of boundaries (represented by Categories 7, 8 and 12 of the HBQ) and attainments in pronunciation. More specifically, the less organized the direct environment (e.g., the working place) of the subjects was and the more preference the participants showed for perceiving and accepting blurred borders between constructs, the better their pronunciation was. A closer look at particular students revealed the importance of boundaries between thoughts and feelings, and boundaries related to defensive mechanisms and to sensitivity in FL pronunciation learning.

Today’s fathers are more involved with childcare than the generations that preceded them. There is evidence to suggest that men consider fatherhood and their relationships with their children as more important than ever before. Still, society generally deems the activity of “parenting” as feminine. Thus, men who choose to identify with hegemonic notions of masculinity have few pre-existing father identities to choose from. I argue that fathers actively masculinize their parenting in order to protect their masculine identities. I use qualitative methods to examine the different approaches that they take to conciliate their actions as fathers with their identities as men. They do so by stressing different areas of importance when it comes to parenting, by adding masculine elements to their fathering activities, and by staying away from parenting activities that are generally marked by society as feminine.

Preparing detailed maps for projects is the most often made survey. It results from quick development of real estate market, prosperity in buildings branch and connected with it big demands for maps by clients. Preparing map for project is seemingly simple and easy task. It brings about that many surveyors are not fully conscious consequences which can result within investment process (including stopping of building site), when on the map for project are put real estate boundaries not consistent with cadastral data. Thus, methods preventing such cases, have been shown in the paper. There also basis of mapping boundaries on the map for project, being under preparing. So, the paper is a trial towards describing real estate boundary on maps for project. The main attention has been focused on the stage of creating map and inserting on it cadastral data. It has also been remarked that in some cases other surveys must be performed, before final process of completing map for project had been made. It has also been emphasized that on maps for project, only real estate legal boundaries should be mapping.
Sporządzanie map sytuacyjno-wysokościowych do celów projektowych to najczęściej wykonywane prace geodezyjne. Wynika to z szybkiego rozwoju rynku nieruchomości, z ożywienia w sektorze budowlanym i związanego z tym dużym zapotrzebowaniem zleceniodawców na mapy. Wykonanie mapy do celów projektowych to z pozoru proste zadanie.

Opis:
At the basis of “Questions of Boundaries Research Group”, carrying out its activity since November 2006 as an interdepartmental unit of Adam Mickiewicz University, lays the idea of discussion. In this discussion, or rather a coincidence of discussions, due to its dialogic formula, a distinctive question came through, and we decided to put it in the first information about this idea (and also, from the very beginning, at the website: www.graniczne.amu.edu.pl) as its specific, constitutional preamble: ”Is it possible to create a platform for joint questions, talks, lectures and discussions dealing with basic issues, such as image of the world and our own place in it – for people who do not have and do not need to have one shared point of view”. Our starting point is the consciousness of a growing difficulty towards the aim of comprehending the world we experience as a whole. We find ourselves at the point at which simultaneously: - almost all possibilities of a modern scientific research are disclosed (especially technological possibilities), along with their hardly predictable consequences for a human being; – the possibility of a deeper basic understanding of the way the world – and our own life – are given to us, is sparkling through, providing a chance that we will achieve an inventive attitude towards those realities in our civilization which appear to be dangerous or spoiled; – there prevails a difficulty with the underlying intention of any science – to describe the world as a whole. Nevertheless, the desire to perceive the world as a whole has not vanished. It is present even when there comes along a certain skepsis as to the probability of satisfying this desire. We cannot excuse ourselves from attempting to answer the question why is it so. We also should not resign from trying to express this desire. We should realize that, although a common reaction to discomfort  is trying to remove it, namely to harmonize a disrupted view of reality as quickly as possible, it is by no means the only possible solution. It is rather immediate and temporary and, for some fundamental processes of problem solving (investigative as well as existential), it may have a restraining effect. Above all, it means closing to the “unexpected” which has a potential of possibilities in itself. Perhaps that is why, instead of quickly reducing and eliminating inconvenient situations, it is worth “to condensate” them on purpose. In the academic year 2007/2008 Questions of Boundaries Research Group has offered students and PhD’s about a dozen of classes per each semester (http://www.graniczne.amu.edu.pl/ PPG Wiki/Wiki.jsp?page =20072008). Most prominent among them are the series of interdisciplinary lectures: “Xenophobia, Racism and Exclusion (because of Race, Sex and Age)” and “Boundaries of Humanity: Between Human and Animal World” along with “Boundaries of Humanity: Between the World of Human and the World of Machines” – these are delivered by the representatives of many varying disciplines. This year’s research priorities consist of two projects: “Redefinition of the Fundamental Terms of Humanism in the Light of Holocaust” and “Spaces of Community”. Lectures, seminars and classes of Research Group have raised wide interest and, among our other intentions, they begin to play an important role in creating a meeting space for students and PhD’s of various faculties and specialties.

The purpose of the research is to establish correspondence between the geographical and mental boundaries of the Ukrainian ethno-political identity. A theoretical and comparative analysis and generalization of historical, geographical, political and sociological theses and data have been applied. The research determines the external boundaries (between Ukraine and the surrounding countries) and internal ones (between the regions of Ukraine). It demonstrates the exceptional importance of the Ukrainian identity opposition to the Russian mental influences. Ukraine is divided into three main regions. Central Ukraine is a mental basis for the Ukrainian identity and political nation. Western Ukraine is notable for the highest level of national consciousness and Ukrainian patriotism. South-Eastern Ukraine is characterized by stronger competition of the Ukrainian and Russian values, but simultaneously by dominating Ukrainian identity.

Opis:
The paper is devoted to the study of the boundary layer behaviour of solutions to partial differential equations occurring in domains with periodic oscillating boundaries, the frequency and the amplitude of the oscillations being the same. First, the transport method, a classical one from the optimal design theory, is used in order to state the problem in a fixed domain ; then, an adapted two-scale boundary layer convergence is developed. Apart from this new hybrid approach, the main difference with related works is consideration of a bounded unit-cell, yielding a simple functional framework. Convergence, as well as a homogenized equation for the first order boundary layer term are given, and a first order corrector result is proved. This a priori boundingg is very well suited to problems of control, and to numerical implementation considerations. The difficulty in obtaining higher order correctors due to the bounding of the unit-cell is finally discussed.

Hardly any problem in contemporary theological-moral discourse causes such turbulence as the searching, reflection, and demarcation of the boundaries between good and evil in human acting. A fundamental problem is a criterion or a reference point according to which a person could reliably determine what is good and evil. Divergent theological views in the theological-moral dimension seem to have caused the clear boundaries between good and evil to disappear. Therefore, the crucial question is whether there is still a universal criterion for theological evaluation of a human act, as the situation in theological-moral discourse resembles an areopagus of opinions that have no common point in distinguishing between good and evil. This reflection examines the possibility if the Thomistic ethical analysis of a human act, together with the principle of double effect, may be a reference point for the demarcation of these boundaries.

French-accented English

Opis:
In English, prosodic parameters play a major role at two main levels. First, they indicate the intonation at the level of the utterance by marking the distinction between sentence types (statements vs questions) and they are related - although more or less directly- to the informational and grammatical structures of the utterance. Secondly, prosodic cues also contribute to marking the stress pattern at the level of the word (word stress or lexical stress). Even if it is useful to dissociate these two levels theoretically, when looking at their phonetic implementation in an utterance, it soon appears that the exact same prosodic cues are used (namely fundamental frequency, duration, and intensity). Contrary to what happens in tone languages, there is no pre-set prosodic configuration attached to each word in English. Yet, words in discourse retain a relative accentual independence even though the exact prosodic implementation of word stress depends on the specific intonational context expressed in a given utterance (Pierrehumbert, 1980). In French, stress pertains to the level of the group of words rather than to the individual word, which has no real accentual autonomy. Therefore, it is not surprising that French learners of English are faced with a major challenge: how to ensure the marking of lexical stress while, at the same time, using the same prosodic cues to indicate the intonational structure of the utterance. My hypothesis is that some intonational contexts impose a bigger constraint on French learners of English than others. These particularly challenging contexts are the final position at the boundary of non-final clause, or the boundary of a rising interrogative. Other contexts, like the quotation form or the final position of a statement, are less challenging for the intonational marking of lexical stress. To test my hypothesis, I collected passages of read speech by thirteen upper intermediate/advanced French learners of English along with the same passage read by ten native English speakers. Two trisyllabics carrying primary stress on the second syllable (com'puter, pro'tection) were placed in a series of intonational contexts under observation. The test-words were then extracted and submitted to native English listeners. The perceptual results show that the predicted ‘challenging’ contexts indeed caused substantial instability in the learners’ placement of lexical stress as perceived by native English listeners.

Opis:
This article presents a complicated process of shaping national borders in the Middle East. The author demonstrates the fact that present political boundaries were established mainly by the European countries, with the United Kingdom leading the way. National desires, colonial aspirations, imperial needs, all led to the unrealistic picture of the boundaries in the Middle East. The author analyzes the boundaries fallen into the following categories: those in which natural features influenced their location, boundaries which run along old Ottoman Empire administrative boundaries in the form of straight lines, the lines which follow man-made features, and ethnic lines. The aim of this paper is to focus on one of the neglected factors which determine the exact location of international boundaries in the Middle East, namely village boundaries. The examples of Israel-Palestine boundaries as well as the Syrian-Jordan boundary will be used to examine this phenomenon.

Distillation boundaries originate from saddle azeotropes, dividing the composition space into distillation regions. In heterogeneous mixtures distilled in packed columns, distillation regions overlap. The common area of distillation regions is parametrically sensitive, and it determines the possibilities of crossing (at a finite reflux) the distillation boundaries defined for a total reflux or reboil ratio. This work is an extended research of the paper (Krolikowski et al., 2011) conducted to scrutinize whether the distillation regions overlapped in heteroazeotropic systems distilled in staged columns. Presented studies were performed by finding such composition points of the products, for which the rectifying profiles of staged columns were ended in different distillation regions. Calculations were executed for the heterogeneous mixture classified under Serafimov's topological class as 3.1-2: ethanol - benzene - water. Distillation regions for staged columns were found to overlap each other in the heterogeneous systems. As a result, their common part was parametrically sensitive.

There is no empirical research exploring how substance abuse therapists perceive and manage their professional role or privacy boundaries. This study explores their attitudes associated with self-disclosure and dual relationships. Ten therapists, five who had recovered (neophytes) and five who had never been substance dependent, shared their work experiences during semi-structured, in-depth interviews, which have been subjected to interpretative phenomenological analysis. While non-neophytes were generally reluctant to share personal information or establish alternative forms of relationship with current or former clients, neophytes were more open to using self-disclosure and admitted changing professional relationships into friendships. These findings are discussed in relation to ethical codes, training and supervision in substance abuse treatment.
