The caloric value of the crops is one of the fundamental parameters to be determined during the process of biomass production for the energy purposes. The variety of biomass and its reaction to the environmental and agrotechnical conditions forces the utilization of particularly accurate algorithms during the determination of the caloric value of the crops. While determining the caloric value of the directly combusted crops, the coefficients for the raw state caloric value should be used. Violation of this rule causes significant overestimation of the end-results. Using the biomass for the biogas production, the energy balance should take the methane into account. The literature data shows quite a big difference in gas production from various substrates (from 368 up 722 Ndm3 per kg of dry mass) as well as a significant difference in the methane content (from 53 up to 76%). While planning the substrates selection for a biogas production plant, special attention should be put on proper estimation of the over mentioned coefficients.

The article presents and overview of selected physical and chemical issues relating to biomass gasification. It also includes the history of the development of thermal wood treatment technology, with particular attention paid to Polish threads. Basic physical and chemical properties of biomass are discussed, using wood and straw as representative examples. Main types of gravitational gasifying reactors are presented, along with the analysis of basic mechanisms of homogeneous and heterogeneous chemical reactions in the reactor bed. The equation of motion of bed particles is derived based on particle volume changes caused by pyrolysis and surface reactions.

Willow biomass can be collected in the form of entire or chipped shoots. The method depends on the harvest cycle of the plants, availability of necessary machines and the expected use of harvested raw material. Methods of harvesting influence on biomass quality during its acquisition and further in the storage period. Therefore, the aim of the research was to characterize the harvest of willow plantation with the use of a biobaler WB 55 and to assess the quality of the obtained biomass during the 9-month period of its storage. Willow was harvested with biobaler WB 55 in January 2010 on a commercial plantation. The 3.5 ha plantation was situated in the north-east of Poland, in the village of Dorotowo (53°42′9.88″ N 20°25′11.02″ E). An analysis of the biomass quality in terms of its thermophysical and chemical properties was carried out at the laboratory of the Department of Plant Breeding and Seed Production of the UWM in Olsztyn. Willow harvesting with a unit consisting of a 129 kW tractor and biobaler WB 55 was conducted efficiently. The average harvesting efficiency was about 18 bales per hour of the unit operation (8.75 Mg h-1 FM). The fresh matter density in the bales averaged 358.10 kg m-3 FM, whereas in dry matter it was 166.16 kg m-3 DM. With extended duration of storage, the quality of willow biomass as an energy raw material improved. The biomass in the bales steadily lost its moisture, from 53.06% in January to 17.48% in September. On the other hand, the lower heating value increased during that same period from 7.75 MJ kg-1 to 15.65 MJ kg-1. It has been found based on the observations made during the study period that the advantages of a biobaler WB 55 are the easy and efficient harvesting of plants on a plantation and bales can be used for energy production as needed.

When establishing a plantation of energy crops, a number of decisions regarding planned technology and plant selection should be made. Using the complex calculation algorithms, it is possible to determine the amount of energy needed to establish, run and liquidate the plantation. An analysis of the technological process and the specifics of the examined plants allows to determine the set of the most important features determining the yield size, and ultimately the energy efficiency of the planned production. When conducting field production, the influence of climatic conditions should also be taken into account, for example using a hydrothermal coefficient. The most difficult element of the planned project is to determine the size of the expected yield. Using the above relationships, a mathematical model can be used which, while maintaining the range of the system variables, allows to determine the amount of the expected energy value of the crop.

Pretreatment is aimed at making lignin structures, which in turn causes decrystallisation and depolymerisation of cellulose. This treatment allows to increase the energy potential of substrates. A properly selected method allows for obtaining larger amounts of biogas with a high content of biomethane. The aim of the study was to analyse selected pretreatment methods (ultrasonic and hydrothermal) for biogas yield, including biomethane, and to demonstrate the effectiveness of obtaining additional electricity and heat from these methods. It was based on the literature data. On basis the study, the following information was obtained: average yield of biogas and biomethane before and after treatment, difference in yield of biogas and biomethane after treatment, and the effect of treatment on the substrate used. Moreover, an estimate was made of the effectiveness of obtaining additional electricity and heat from selected pretreatment methods compared to hard coal. Based on the analysis of the ultrasonic treatment analysis, it was shown that the best result was obtained with the ultrasound treatment of the mixture of wheat straw and cattle manure with the following parameters: frequency 24 kHz, temperature 44.30°C, time 21.23 s. This allowed a 49% increase in biogas production. The use of pretreatment would therefore allow the production of more electricity and heat capable of replacing conventional heat sources such as coal.

The article presented forecasts for European biofuel production in processes BtL and WtL on the basis of thermochemical technological path. The paper presents the processes of pyrolysis and gasification of biomass leading to the preparation of liquid hydrocarbon fractions in the synthesis of Fischer-Tropsch and processes HTU. Based on the model Koufopanosa, made the right choice of methods to investigate the thermogravimetric kinetics of biomass gasification with a change of enthalpy and identification of degradation products in real time. Presents the results of preliminary tests conducted on the Simultaneous Thermal Analyzer STA 449 F3 Jupiter's Nietzsche. These studies were carried out for samples of cereal straw, crushed to a state of dry dust. Gasification process by subjecting the sample, the test set, recorded curves TG and DSC, and observing the changes in mass, temperature and enthalpy. These studies have been done to pre-determine the conditions under which it may begin the process of liquidation. The study was conducted in an atmosphere of argon / nitrogen and argon / carbon dioxide. The temperature regime provided that the samples were heated to the temperature of500 °C at the heating rate of 3 K/min. Argon was used as protective gas, and N2 and CO2 - as purge gas with flow rates of 30 ml/min. The results, along with discussion, are presented in graphs -derivatograms and charts showing the cumulative weight changes and changes in enthalpy of individual samples.

This paper presents the results of a research on the influence of potato pulp content in a mixture with oat bran on the power demand of the pelletization process and on the quality of the produced pellets, in the context of use thereof as a heating fuel. The tests of the densification of the pulp and bran mixture were carried out on a work stand whose main element was a P-300 pellet mill with the ‘flat matrix-densification rolls’ system. 24 h after the pellets left the working system, their kinetic durability was established with the use of a Holmen tester. The research results obtained in this way allowed concluding that increasing the potato pulp content in a mixture with oat bran from 15 to 20% caused a reduction of the power demand of the pellet mill. It was also established that as the pulp content in a mixture with oat bran increases from 15 to 25%, the value of the kinetic durability of the pellets determined using Holmen and Pfost methods decreases.

It was investigated multi-disc grinding in directions knowledge of, describe and utilize, for design and structural purposes, the characteristics that indicate the relations between speeds idle movement, loads and the indicators of usable variables in the grinding space. Badano rozdrabniacze wielotarczowe w kierunku poznania, opisania i projektowo-konstrukcyjnego wykorzystania charakterystyk użytkowych ziarna w zależności od: prędkości ruchu jałowego i pod obciążeniem elementów rozdrabniacza. W wyniku badań zweryfikowano model matematyczny stanów i przemian ziaren ich powierzchni i objętości podczas ruchu (jałowego i roboczego) elementów i wydajności zespołu wielootworowego rozdrabniacza.

Opis:
Ash samples from biomass combustion or co-combustion with coal were analysed. The aim of this study of ash was to determine its mineral and chemical composition, and the chemical composition of solutions obtained during one-step water extraction. Besides the chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS) were applied. The mineral and chemical composition of ash samples differ strongly. The content of heavy metals in the ash is generally low, but in some samples the limits of the content of some elements determined for fertilizers or soil amendments are exceeded. The relatively poor correlation between the concentration in leachate and bulk content in ash indicates that numerous elements are present in different forms in the studied samples. The results indicate that the potential use of biomass ash, or ash from biomass–coal co-combustion, requires complex studies that explore ash and leachates.
