Opis:
Scots pine sawdust, composted bark or coarse, post-harvest woody debris from conifers had been spread over the surface of barren forest soil before planting with Scots pine. The effects of the Scots pine sawdust, composted bark or coarse, post-harvest woody debris from conifers on the abundance and diversity of culturable fungi were investigated. The amendments were aimed at increasing the soil suppressiveness to Armillaria and Heterobasidion. The classical soil-dilution method was chosen for qualitative and quantitative analyses of fungal communities in soils because of its proven reliability and consistency. The soil was inhabited by saprotrophic fungi from Ascomycota and Zygomycota, including species known to be potential antagonists of Armillaria or H. annosum (i.e. Clonostachys + Trichoderma spp., Penicillium commune, P. daleae, P. janczewskii) or stimulants of Armillaria (i.e. Pseudogymnoascus roseus, Trichocladium opacum). Eleven years after treatment, the abundance and diversity of fungi, the abundance of P. commune, and locally the abundance of P. janczewskii increased, while Clonostachys + Trichoderma spp., and locally, P. daleae and T. opacum decreased. Amending the barren soil with organic matter does not guarantee effective, long-term suppressiveness of the sandy loam soil to Armillaria and Heterobasidion. Increased abundance of entomopathogenic and nematophagous species, 11 years after treatment, does suggest the long-term possibility of insect or nematode control in soil.

Opis:
This paper contributes to studies on the lichen biota of Arctic regions. The research was carried out in the forelands of eight glaciers and in the mature tundra surrounding them. Study areas were located in two parts of Svalbard: in the Kongsfjord (forelands of Austre Brøggerbreen, Vestre Brøggerbreen, Austre Lovénbreen, Midtre Lovénbreen, and Vestre Lovénbreen) and in the Isfjord (forelands of Rieperbreen, Svenbreen, and Ferdinandbreen). In each foreland and in the mature tundra surrounding it, a series of 1-m² plots was established, within which a percentage cover for each species was determined. In total, 133 lichens and one lichenicolous fungus were recorded. Nineteen species were recorded for the first time in Svalbard: Agonimia allobata, Atla wheldonii, Bacidia herbarum, Catolechia wahlenbergii, Epigloea soleiformis, Lecanora behringii, Lepraria subalbicans, Leptogium arcticum, Pertusaria pseudocorallina, Placidiopsis custnani, Protothelenella corrosa, Pyrenidium actinellum, Spilonema revertens, Stereocaulon saxatile, Thelocarpon sphaerosporum, Toninia coelestina, Verrucaria elaeina, Verrucaria murina, and Verrucaria xyloxena. The lichen richness was the lowest in the Ferdinandbreen foreland (24 species) and the highest in the Rieperbreen foreland (82 species). Significant differences in species composition were found among the forelands studied, except for Austre and Vestre Brøggerbreen whose lichen composition was similar. The differences in lichen composition between mature tundra in the vicinity of the following forelands were identified: Vestre Brøggerbreen and Svenbreen, Austre Brøggerbreen and Svenbreen, and Austre Brøggerbreen and Ferdinandbreen. The most dominant group of lichens in both forelands and mature tundra were chlorolichens, not cyanolichens.

Opis:
57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy - a versatile technique involving the recoil-free, resonant absorption and emission of nuclear gamma (γ) rays by the iron-57 isotope in natural iron in solids - has been used to provide quantitative information about the mineral host, occupation sites and oxidation states of iron atoms in geological samples. This technique has been applied to the bulk chemistry of a barren soil (Soil A) derived from an aluminous-type granite and another barren soil (Soil B) derived from a sodic-type granite located ~ 100 kilometers apart in the Nubian Deseit in the currently hyper arid south-west of Egypt and which exhibit distinct chemical and mineral differences. The analyses indicate different mineral hosts for the iron in these samples, namely, vermiculite-chlorite plus some hematite in Soil A and hematite and goethite plus minor aegirines in Soil B. Each soil has distinct intensities of oxidized iron (89% for Soil A and 100% for Soil B) and these differences reflect changes in soil sources and processes.

Opis:
Batticaloa MC, one of the fastest-growing cities in Sri Lanka, is the most vital agglomeration that should concentrate upon temporal changes in land use. Various land use categories, namely commercial, residential, agricultural, scrubland, mangroves, water and barren land in Batticaloa, have been modified by the different purposes of utilization. This study aims to identify the land-use changes of Batticaloa Municipal Council from 1980 to 2018. Primary and secondary data collection methods were used to gather the data for analysis. Comparison was made to the various land use categories in 1980, 1990, 2000, 2010 and 2018. The temporal pattern of land-use change was presented via a comparison of the five-time periods of land use. ArcGIS 10.4.1 and MS Excel 2013 were applied to analyse the maps and data. The finding of the study was that between 1980 and 2018, there were significant land-use changes in the study area. Commercial and residential areas increased by 20.17 ha and 1148.57 ha, respectively, and barren land and agricultural land lost 769.54 ha and 301.99 ha, respectively. In addition, rest land use categories were converted into other land use categories during these periods. The effects of human activities are immediate and often radical, while the natural effects are relatively long. The recommendations are to enforce future land use planning, and protect forest resources through land-use strategies by way of the government with community participation encouraging the approval of urban planners to make decisions about urban development.

Opis:
Numerous barren land areas are found within administrative boundaries of cities. They include both former farmland located at the outskirts of cities, as well as vacant plots, postindustrial plots or former railway infrastructure plots. Barren plots are integral elements of the urban landscape and contemporary scientific concepts indicate their important role in the functioning of urban ecosystems. Abandoned land provides a potential for the development of green infrastructure and further development of recreation areas. At the same time some abandoned plots are informally adapted by local residents to suit their needs, transforming them into community gardens and recreation areas. This paper presents results of studies conducted by the authors in selected derelict areas in the city of Poznań. Analyses were conducted on their type, origin, size and location within the city. Observations were also recorded on the methods to adapt abandoned land by local communities.

Opis:
The effect of 1-10 volume percent addition of ion exchange substrate Biona to the purified sand and a garden soil on the growth of Dactylis glomerata L. Was studied under laboratory conditions. The addition of ion exchange substrate strongly improves the plant growth; the addition of 1% by volume brings the sand to the productivity of garden soil. The same addition to the garden soil improves its productivity significantly. The further improvement (by factor 1.5-2) was observed at mutual addition of the BIONA, fruitless peat and perlite (1% by volume each). It is concluded that the addition of small amount of ion exchange substrate BIONA (1-2% by volume) is an efficient mean for fertilization of barren grounds and soils.

Opis:
Throughout her extended career Ellen Glasgow turned the lives of women into the subject matter of many of her novels. Adopting the perspective of gender studies, this paper proposes a comparison of different models of femininity embodied in the main female characters of three novels from different periods: The Battle-Ground (1902), Virginia (1913) and Barren Ground (1925). This study will reveal an evolution from the conservative model of the southern lady to the progressive one of the new woman. These characters’ interaction with different patriarchal institutions as well as their outcome will ratify the model of the new woman in detriment of the lady and demonstrate Glasgow’s progression in terms of genre from the sentimental to the realist novel.
Na przestrzeni lat Ellen Glasgow uczyniła z życia kobiet temat wielu powieści. Przyjmując perspektywę gender studies, w artykule zaproponowano porównanie różnych modeli kobiecości na przykładzie głównych bohaterek trzech powieści z trzech epok: The Battle-Ground (1902), Virginia (1913) i Barren Ground (1925).
