Opis:
Archeological sites in Nubia are a continuous source of new material connected either generally or specifically with Nubian archery. Objects of this kind discussed here and in other publications of excavated assemblages (including excavations of the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archeology, University of Warsaw) are seldom perceived as such, indiscernible as they are among the range of metal objects judged as being weaponry in a general sense. The lack of any synthetic work on Nubian archery is also evident in the literature in general and the few works that undertake the theme contain errors that are in need of being corrected. This article deals with issues related to the topic, which, although discussed separately, will hopefully work toward establishing the groundwork for a final reconstruction.

Opis:
Quail-thrushes (Passeriformes: Cinclosomatidae: Cinclosoma) are ground-dwelling corvoid songbirds endemic to Austra lia and New Guinea. Until now, the only known quail-thrush fossils have been from late Quaternary cave deposits in Australia. A new species of quail-thrush, Cinclosoma elachum sp. nov., is described from the early to middle Miocene deposits in the Riversleigh World Heritage Area, Queensland, Australia. A second, larger quail-thrush is identified from the middle Miocene of Riversleigh. The new fossils considerably extend the geographic and temporal ranges of cinclosomatids, and indicate the presence of two species of quail-thrushes in the Miocene of northern Australia, located more than 300 km from the nearest extant member of Cinclosoma. These fossils provide a minimum age of ~18 million years for Cinclosomatidae. They cannot be confidently assigned to the crown group of the genus Cinclosoma, but can be used to calibrate the split between this genus and Ptilorrhoa in molecular dating studies of the Corvides radiation and Passeriformes overall. This material also adds to the growing diversity of songbirds identified from the pre-Pleistocene record of Australia, and reemphasises the global significance of the Riversleigh deposits in developing understanding about the early evolutionary history of passerines.

In Constructing Social Problems, Spector and Kitsuse initiated a constructionist approach to the study of social problems that would emphasize processes of definition over objective conditions. Despite this emphasis on a different subject matter, the social problems moniker was retained and continues to frame the constructionist study of claims-making. This paper contests the centrality of the social problems concept to the constructionist perspective and proposes a shift in theoretical emphasis from constructions of problematic conditions to constructions of actors’ interests. I use the term “interest claims” to describe assertions of what is advantageous or beneficial to certain people or groups, and use a brief case study of claims made by a school board and a group of parents to delineate the difference between paternalistic (“their” best interests) and proprietary (“our” best interests) claims-making activities. Finally, I argue for the inclusion of claims-maker interests and motivations in the study of interest claims and claims-making.

Neohelos is a geographically and temporally widespread genus of Cenozoic diprotodontid marsupials commonly used to biocorrelate otherwise undated Australian fossil deposits. Here, we revise the genus and describe two new species from the Riversleigh World Heritage Area of northwestern Queensland. Neohelos solussp. nov. is a small, relatively abundant, plesiomorphic form, while the rarer, larger Neohelos davidridei sp. nov. is the most derived species of the genus with an upper premolar morphology that is structurally antecedant to members of the Late Miocene genus Kolopsis. Additional material of Neohelos tirarensis and Neohelos stirtoni is described. A chronological morphocline is evidenced by a gradual change in morphology accompanied by an increase in size from Ne. tirarensis through Ne. stirtoni to Ne. davidridei, and is generally consistent with the biostratigraphic distribution of Neohelos species throughout Riversleigh’s faunal zones A to D. Stage of evolution biocorrelation of Neohelos species confirms that some of Riversleigh’s Faunal Zone A deposits are Late Oligocene in age and predate the Wipajiri Formation of South Australia. Strong faunal correlations exist between Riversleigh’s topographically low to middle Faunal Zone C deposits and the Northern Territory’s Middle Miocene Bullock Creek Local Fauna. The presence of the highly derived N. davidridei in the Jaw Junction Local Fauna of Riversleigh’s Upper Faunal Zone C suggests a later Middle Miocene (post−Bullock Creek) age for this deposit.

In his early career, Kenneth Millar, better known as Ross Macdonald, emulated the style of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler. By the 1960s he had established himself as a distinct voice in the hardboiled genre. In his Lew Archer series, he conveys the complexity of his characters and settings primarily by the use of metaphors. In his 1966 novel Black Money the device performs three functions. In the case of minor characters, the author uses metaphors to comment on Californian society. Concurrently, metaphors describing major characters allow him to develop their dramatic arcs, whereas the recurring elements of the leitmotif serve to demonstrate the narrating detective’s growing concerns with the ongoing investigation. Arguably, it was Macdonald’s use of metaphors that helped define his unique voice.

In recent years transition metal ion doped ZnO has been the focus of intense scientific enquiry. ZnO:Co is by far the most studied member of this family. However, despite the many experimental claims for ferromagnetism, a definitive theoretical explanation for long range magnetic interaction has so far been lacking. Here we present a mechanism which describes not only the origin of this previously inexplicable magnetism but also explains the experimental findings to date and in addition, suggests a recipe for tailoring the magnetic properties. We demonstrate that the magnetism originates from a $Co^{2+}$ oxygen vacancy pair with a partially filled level close to the ZnO conduction band minimum. The long range coupling then occurs via conduction electrons at moderate n doping. This however is not sufficient for room temperature ferromagnetism due to the prohibitive concentrations of O vacancies needed. The experimental findings may then be explained by a combination of our proposed mechanism and the formation of blocked superparamagnetic clusters.

It is sometimes claimed that Aristotle’s doctrine of the Mean is false or unhelpful: moral virtues are not typically flanked by two opposing vices as he claimed. However, an explicit restatement of Aristotle’s view in terms of sufficiency for an objective reveals that the Mean is more widely applicable than has sometimes been alleged. Understood as a special case of sufficiency, it is essential to many judgments of right and wrong. I consider some objections by Rosalind Hursthouse to Aristotle’s theory and argue that they are based on a misunderstanding. However, there is indeed a tension in Aristotle’s view of goodness, hinted at in his claim that the good is "said in many ways".

The main purpose of this article is to consider the merits of including the transcendent concern in the set of ultimate concerns of human life as they are understood by M. Archer. In the first place, the author discusses Archer’s definition of that concern presented in the scientist’s works, and then presents a broader understanding of that concept highlighting its significance for man and his social life by the prism of its influence on human agency. Finally, the author discusses the relationships between particular concerns with special emphasis on the transcendent one and provides the final conclusions.

Instances of dwarfism in the fossil record are of interest to palaeontologists because they often provide insight into aspects of palaeoecology. Fossil species of Australian-Pacific mekosuchine genus Mekosuchus have been described as dwarf, primarily terrestrial crocodiles, in contrast with the nearly ubiquitous semi-aquatic habitus of extant crocodilians (Willis 1997). This hypothesis has been difficult to test because of limited knowledge of the cranial and postcranial skeleton of extinct taxa and the continuous nature of crocodilian growth. New crocodilian vertebral material from Riversleigh, northwestern Queensland, tentatively referred to Mekosuchus whitehunterensis, displays morphological maturity indicative of adult snout-vent length little over a half-meter, proportionally smaller than extant dwarf taxa. Further, this material displays morphology that indicates a relatively large epaxial neck musculature for its body-size. These attributes suggest this dwarf mekosuchine employed unusual feeding behaviours. The ability to perform normal death-roll, de-fleshing behaviours would be limited in a mekosuchine of such small size. Given the powerful neck muscles and other anatomical features, it is more likely that this mekosuchine killed and/or dismembered its prey using a relatively forceful lifting and shaking of the head.

Opis:
The Archer method for construction of nonparametric hydrographs was regarded as the basic one for constructing design hydrographs in gauged cross sections. The hydrographs designed using this method belong to a group of non-formalized hydrology. Unlike the commonly used formalized methods, where a nonparametric hydrograph is strictly determined and defined, the hydrographs defined in this way are constructed on the assumption, that flow is the main determined parameter. On the other hand, the Archer method assumes that the basic parameter is time, which is determined for assigned standardized flow, called a flow percentile. Hydrographs constructed using this method are the basis for constructing parametric design hydrographs used for engineering computations. The Archer method is relatively new and should be verified for various regions. Presented manuscript compares the results obtained using this method in the middle Odra and upper Vistula basins with the nonparametric method developed at the Cracow University of Technology, called the Cracow method. The obtained results show, that four highest registered flood waves are sufficient to construct a nonparametric design hydrograph, whereas semi-standardized volumes above descriptors W75 and W50 and the duration time of the descriptors are bigger than the volumes and duration times calculated by means of the Cracow method in the Vistula River basin, and approximate with regard to the values in the Odra River basin.

Opis:
Nonparametric hydrographs, constructed by the method suggested by Archer, are usually used for developing parametric design hydrographs. Flow changes in time are described by the UPO ERR Gamma complex function, which denotes a Gamma curve reformulated to have a Unit Peak at the Origin (abbreviated to UPO), supplemented by the Exponential Replacement Recession (ERR) curve. It may be observed, that this solution does not work in some areas of the upper Vistula and middle Odra catchments when the times of the rising limb of a hydrograph are higher than the times of the falling limb, i.e. when the skewness coefficient approximates 0.5 or higher values. Better results can be achieved with the function suggested by Strupczewski in 1964. It is a solution which uses two parameters of the flood hydrograph. The objective of the present paper is to assess the Strupczewski method by comparing it with a complex UPO ERR Gamma function for gauged cross-sections in the upper Vistula and middle Odra catchments. The assessment was carried out for 30 gauged cross-sections (15 in each river catchment). The parameters were optimized for width-hydrograph descriptors W75 and W50, designed by the Archer method, and for the skewness coefficient s. Optimization using only two width-hydrograph descriptors aims to test how the Strupczewski method works for cross-sections for which the values of width-hydrograph descriptors W75 and W50 are known. The assessment of both methods was carried out with reference to a nonparametric hydrograph constructed by the Archer method. The results of these assessments suggest that the Strupczewski method may be used not only for gauged cross-sections, but also for ungauged ones.

Opis:
Parametric flow hydrographs are used for design and management purposes in such fields as water management and aquatic engineering. They describe a theoretical hydrograph based on such parameters as maximum flow, time to peak, and surge duration. They are used to forecast flood risk and to evaluate the impact of land use on the run-off hydrograph. In Western Europe for many years methods have been used in which parametric hydrographs are determined based on physical catchment descriptors (PCDs), which are divided into three groups describing the physical features of a catchment. These descriptors are used to derive formulae enabling the determination of parametric flow hydrographs for any computational crosssection. In this work, such formulae are derived for the catchment of the Raba River, using the principles of design hydrology applied in Western European countries. The parametric hydrograph is described using Baptista’s gamma density function. The input hydrograph was a nonparametric flow hydrograph determined by Archer’s method. For nine gauging stations located in the Raba catchment, physical catchment descriptors were obtained for two 30-year periods: 1961-1990 and 1983-2012. Based on the nonparametric flow hydrograph and the PCDs, two groups of formulae were derived to describe the parametric hydrograph. Analysis of agreement between the computed parametric flow hydrographs and the input hydrograph indicated a high quality of fit. It should be noted that the formulae and analysis presented here refer only to the Raba catchment. However, the results confirm the possibility of applying these methods to the determination of parametric flow hydrographs for any river cross-section.

Purpose: Previous biomechanical studies have estimated the strains of bone and bone substitutes using strain gages. However, applying strain gages to biological samples can be difficult, and data collection is limited to a small area under the strain gage. The purpose of this study was to compare digital image correlation (DIC) strain measurements to those obtained from strain gages in order to assess the applicability of DIC technology to common biomechanical testing scenarios. Methods: Compression and bending tests were conducted on aluminum alloy, polyurethane foam, and laminated polyurethane foam specimens. Simplified single-legged stance loads were applied to composite and cadaveric femurs. Results Results: Showed no significant differences in principal strain values (or variances) between strain gage and DIC measurements on the aluminum alloy and laminated polyurethane foam specimens. There were significant differences between the principal strain measurements of the non-laminated polyurethane foam specimens, but the deviation from theoretical results was similar for both measurement techniques. DIC and strain gage data matched well in 83.3% of all measurements in composite femur models and in 58.3% of data points in cadaveric specimens. Increased variation in cadaveric data was expected, and is associated with the well-documented variability of strain gage analysis on hard tissues as a function of bone temperature, hydration, gage protection, and other factors specific to cadaveric biomechanical testing. Conclusions: DIC techniques provide similar results to those obtained from strain gages across standard and anatomical specimens while providing the advantages of reduced specimen preparation time and full-field data analysis.

Introduction: Third molars (TMs) are the most frequently impacted teeth due to the frequent lack of space in the dental arch resulting in their malposition or inability to erupt. Partially erupted TMs that cause recurrent inflammatory conditions must be removed. The aim of this study was to assess TM position on panoramic radiographs. Materials and methods: We evaluated 200 panoramic radiographs of patients 18-72 years of age. Teeth were assessed in terms of the presence of dental follicle, cervix/root ratio and root development stage. Maxillary TMs were assessed using the Archer and Pell and Gregory classifications, whereas the mandibular ones according to Pell and Gregory, Winter, IAN and Pederson classifications. Results: 622 TMs were assessed. In the maxilla, the most common type was A-positioned, vertically angulated TM with completely formed root/roots. In the mandible, the most common type was A1-positio- ned, mesioangular TM with completely formed root/roots and without enlarged follicle. According to Pederson’s index, 59.44% TMs were moderately difficult to extract. Most roots were in contact with inferior alveolar nerve. Conclusions: The use of the classifications mentioned above is helpful in assessment of the surgery difficulty level. In the long term this allows to increase the predictability of the procedure and minimize the intra- and post-operative complications.
