Opis:
The aim of the study was to use regenerated activated carbon to adsorb phenol from a river. Coconut shell activated carbon was derived from used tap water filter cartridges. The activated carbon was carbonised and then activated with KOH at 200°C, under a nitrogen atmosphere. The resulting adsorbent was characterised on the basis of nitrogen adsorption by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis and point of zero charge (pH PZC). The study of periodic adsorption included kinetic and equilibrium modelling, determined the effect of solution pH on efficiency and the possibility of regeneration and reuse of the adsorbent. The efficiency of phenol removal from model water was evaluated, followed by the possibility of their adsorption from a polluted river in Silesia Province. Phenol adsorption followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The adsorbents showed high adsorption abilities, as determined by the Langmuir isotherm model. The model fits the experimental data well. The concentration of phenol in the river was in the range of 0.45-0.77 mg∙dm-3, which means that its value was at least five times higher than the standard values. The use of regenerated activated carbon from waste filter cartridges removed phenol from the river by 78% using optimal test parameters.

Opis:
The results of the studies of bis(1-chloro-2-propyl) ether adsorption from aqueous solution onto AG5 activated carbon were presented here. Dynamic adsorptivity, mass transfer zone and the velocity of the adsorption front of the 10cm adsorption bed depth for the velocity of flow 9 and 25 cm/min were determined. For the regeneration of the adsorption bed, acetone rinsing was used. Total washout of adsorbed bis(1-chloro-2-propyl) ether from the bed was obtained. After the regeneration the adsorbent has not shown deterioration of adsorption properties. To isolate bis(1-chloro-2-propyl) ether from acetone, distillation was used.

Opis:
The operation processes of adsorptive solar refrigerators based on composite adsorbents ‘silica gel - sodium sulphate’ were studied. The correlation between the adsorbent composition and the coefficient of the energy performance of the device was stated. As a consequence of the decreasing of adsorbent mass, the coefficient of performance is increased when sodium sulphate content in the composite increased. Effect of the regeneration process parameters on the composite on the coefficient of performance of the adsorptive refrigenerator was stated. The growth of the coefficient of performance is shown to result from decreasing the difference between adsorbent temperature and regeneration temperature from 85 to 55°C. The maximum values of the coefficient of performance of studied solar adsorptive refrigenerator about of 1.14 are stated for composites containing about 20 wt. % silica gel and 80 wt. % sodium sulphate.

Opis:
This work investigates adsorption of n-hexane on activated tyre pyrolysis char (ATPC) and granular activated carbon (GAC) as a reference material in a fixed-bed column. Microwave-assisted regeneration is also considered. The adsorbed amount of n-hexane on ATPC is in the range of 37–58 mg/g. Microwave-assisted desorption of ATPC samples enables the recovery of up to 95% of adsorbed n-hexane in this non-optimized microwave setup with the efficiency of microwave energy conversion into heat of only 5–6%. For the 50% breakthrough time, ATPC and GAC are able to purify the n-hexane gas volumes in the ranges of 20–90 and 935–1240 cm3/g, respectively. While adsorption kinetics is not satisfactorily described by pseudo-first and pseudo-second order kinetic models, it is very well reflected by a family of dynamic adsorption models, which are modelled with a single logistic function. Internal diffusion is likely the rate limiting step during adsorption on ATPC, while external and internal diffusion likely plays a role in adsorption to GAC. Although microwave-assisted regeneration is performed in a general purpose microwave reactor, both adsorbents show excellent performance and are very good candidates for the adsorption process. Preliminary results show that magnetite can further reduce microwave energy consumption.

This study aimed to determine the adsorption capacity of rhodamine-B (Rh-B) and methylene blue (MB) on Mg/Cr-Ni adsorbents. The Mg/Cr-Ni adsorbent was synthesized by the coprecipitation method. The results of the characterization of Mg/Cr-Ni using XRD analysis showed the formation of oxides at an angle of 2θ = 31.726°, 33°, and 45.44°. The surface area of Mg/Cr-Ni is 23.139 m2/g. The adsorption capacity test for Mg/Cr-Ni for Rh-B and MB were 85.470 mg/g and 166.667 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption kinetics model followed the pseudo second order (PSO). The adsorption process is endothermic and occurs spontaneously at any temperature. Mg/CrNi showed stability in the adsorption process of Rh-B and MB for 5 regeneration cycles.

Opis:
The adsorbent of bone char (BC), produced from the pyrolysis of crushed animal bones, was dominated by the mesopores of the Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) surface area. The optimal condition for defluoridation with BC was a pH level near 5.0. Chloride and nitrate ions could increase fluoride adsorption capacity in contrast with the effect of sulfate and carbonate ions. The interchangeability between fluoride and hydroxyl groups on BC sorbent was proved by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Langmuir equation had a better correlation coefficient than the Freundlich equation at various temperatures. Thermodynamic parameters such as Delta G degrees, Delta H degrees, Delta S degrees, Ea and S*, have been calculated to describe the nature of fluoride adsorption onto BC. Negative Delta G degrees and Delta H degrees values at various temperatures indicate a spontaneous process, and its exothermic effect, respectively. However, a positive Delta S degrees value represents an increasing process for entropy. The E-a and S* values ranging from 5 to 40 kj.mol-1 and 0 to 1, respectively, demonstrated that the adsorption is dominated by physical process, although the adsorption kinetic process was involved external diffusion, intraparticle diffusion and chemical reaction equilibrium stage. A high concentration of NaOH solution increases efficiency of removing adsorbed F- ions from the BC surface.
