Opis:
In most cases, adiabatic plastic heating is evaluated using the inelastic heat fraction coefficient, also known as Taylor-Quinney coefficient, which is usually assumed to be constant. From the thermodynamic viewpoint, this method consists in neglecting (or including some part of) various thermomechanical couplings in the heat equation. Nevertheless this coarse method can lead to over-estimation of the temperature rise. In this paper, adiabatic shear banding incipience is considered in the context of thermal instability. It is shown that the accuracy in the prediction of favourable conditions for the onset of this plastic localization is strongly dependent on the technique retained for evaluating the plasticity induced heating. This paper aims at showing the influence of various levels of simplification of the thermal equation on the critical conditions at localization onset, the latter being obtained from a criterion based on the linear perturbation method.

We summarize recent developments in the area of the coherent propagation of laser pulses through dielectric media. We will show that the principle of dynamical adiabaticity opens new avenues to control the non-perturbative and resonant interaction between two laser pulses and a three-level medium. Examples include the formation of stable wave forms that can travel through optical dielectric media in a loss-free manner with arbitrary pulse shapes, novel possibilities to store optical information in dielectric media in the form of spatially dependent excitations and techniques to exploit this information to control laser pulse envelopes

Opis:
The objective of the present work is to investigate the influence of nanoparticles of copper within the base fluid (water) on magneto-hydrodynamic mixed-convection flow in a square cavity with internal generation. A control finite volume method and SIMPLER algorithm are used in the numerical calculations. The geometry is a lid-driven square cavity with four interior square adiabatic obstacles. A uniform heat source is located in a part of the left wall and a part of the right wall of the enclosure is maintained at cooler temperature while the remaining parts of the two walls are thermally insulated. Both the upper and bottom walls of the cavity are considered to be adiabatic. A comparison with previously published works shows a very good agreement. It is observed that the Richardson number, Ri, significantly alters the behavior of streamlines when increased from 0.1 to 100.0. Also, the heat source position parameter, D, significantly changes the pattern of isotherms and its strength shifted when D moves from 0.3 to 0.7.

The article presents detailed two-phase adiabatic pressure drops data for refrigerant R134a. Study cases have been set for a mass flux varying from 200 to 400 kg/m2s, at the saturation temperature of 19.4°C. Obtained experimental data was compared with the available correlations from the literature for the frictional pressure drop during adiabatic flow. Influence of mixture preparation on pressure drop was investigated, for varying inlet subcooling temperature in the heated section. The flow patterns have also been obtained by means of a high-speed camera placed in the visualization section and compared with literature observations.

Measurements of velocity at frequency of 1 MHz and absorption coefficient of ultrasonic waves within the range 3-50 MHz in aqueous solutions of N,N-diisopropylacetamide (D-i-PA) and zinc acetate ((CH3$\text{}_{C}$OO)$\text{}_{2}$Zn) were made. Additionally, the density of the solutions was measured. The adopted method for making the solutions helped to change the ratio of the number of non-electrolyte molecules to that of electrolyte molecules, with a constant number of water molecules. Measurements of the velocity of ultrasonic waves in the solutions under study were conducted by means of an impulse-phase interferometer. Measurements of the absorption coefficient of ultrasonic waves were conducted by means of an ultrasonic high frequency system, type Matec Instruments (USA) Model 7700. All the measurements were conducted at a constant temperature of 20°C. On the basis of the analysis of excess functions of the molar volume and the adiabatic compressibility, the formation of solvatomers composed of [(D-i-PA)$\text{}_{2}$Zn(H$\text{}_{2}$O)$\text{}_{2}$]$\text{}^{2+}$ and [(D-i-PA)Zn(H$\text{}_{2}$O)$\text{}_{3}$]$\text{}^{2+}$ was found. Also the complex [Zn(CH$\text{}_{3}$COO)$\text{}_{4}$]$\text{}^{2-}$ can be recognised. The results of measurements of sound absorption indicate the occurrence of the relaxation process in the solutions under study and the frequency range used. On the basis of the relaxation theory, relaxation parameters of the process under study were calculated. The relaxation processes discovered in the system (D-i-PA)-H$\text{}_{2}$O(CH$\text{}_{3}$COO)$\text{}_{2}$Zn were assigned to the formation and disintegration of solvatomers composed of [(D-i-PA)Zn(H$\text{}_{2}$O)$\text{}_{3}$]$\text{}^{2+}$ and probably complexes mentioned before.

We generalize Stark-chirped rapid adiabatic passage to the case of a multilevel atom. The atom is assumed to have two ground state levels g and f and an excited level e. The adiabatic passage is carried out by resonantly driving the g-e and f-e transitions with time-dependent pump and Stokes fields in the presence of strong far-off-resonant Stark field. Our formalism determines the states that participate in population transfer and is applicable to systems with arbitrary numbers of degenerate states in each level and arbitrary couplings of the g-e and f-e transitions. We give an application to adiabatic passage in Rb atom.

Opis:
Recent experimental data on the diffusion coefficient of carbon in á-iron below liquid nitrogen temperature (LNT) question the classical approach to the observed temperature dependence. As the temperature is lowered below LNT, the diffusion constant tends to a nearly temperature-independent value rather than continuing its activated trend. The low temperature branch is apparently characteristic of a quantum mechanical process dominated by tunneling in ground state. Concomitantly we apply an occurrence-probability approach to describing the overall temperature dependence as a single continuous rate. Within the adiabatic approximation the electronic eigenvalue depending parametrically on the nuclear coordinates is taken to be the potential energy to control the motion of the nuclei. The resulting rate involves all horizontal-tunneling energy-conserving elastic transitions at the quantized energy levels of the migrating atom. A small though not negligible slope in the temperature dependence as the temperature is raised below 100 K is dealt with by complementing for the rate of a parallel one-phonon inelastic-tunneling process in excess to the basic elastic-tunneling rate. Our combined approach agrees well with the experimental data. In particular, the frequency of the coupled vibration is obtained virtually identical to the carbon vibrational frequency from inelastic neutron scattering data. The migrational barrier is also found to be within the limits expected for alfa-iron.

Opis:
Recent investigations of laser-atom interaction at high intensities have led to the discovery of several unexpected phenomena, and their studies have deepened our understanding of non-perturbative dynamics of quantum systems subjected to unusually strong radiation fields. For the analysis and interpretation of these phenomena. We have developed an ab initio non-perturbative method, the Floquet close-coupling method, and applied it to analyse the highly non-perturbative problem of adiabatic stability of hydrogen atom. Ab initio rates of ionization as a function of the laser intensity for the excited circular states as well as related non-circular states are obtained. Our quantitatively accurate results clearly show that the predictions of the previous approximate theories such as the well-known "high-frequency" theory are qualitatively similar but differ quantitatively. The analysis of the dependence of adiabatic stability on the principal quantum number, the angular momentum, as well as on the magnetic quantum number for the Rydberg states are complemented by investigations of the behavior of the ground state for frequencies below the ionization threshold. In the latter situation we found the existence of stability windows within which the ionization probability decreases with increasing intensity but outside of which the atom becomes more unstable. It is shown here that the mechanism for the occurrence of stability windows is the self-tuned anti-resonance at specific intensities.
