Opis:
This paper presents past and recent water management in the area called the Vistula Delta Fens (Żuławy Fens). This area (56 x 56 km) is located at the outlet of the Vistula River to the Baltic Sea, at the shore of the Gulf of Gdańsk. A large part of the area (30%) is located below sea level as potentially submerged depressions. A multitude of rivers, channels, ditches and pumping stations have been constructed here over several centuries. The area is characterized by highly productive alluvial soils, surface water with a high potential for fish-farming and fishery, and attractive tourist areas at the banks of the rivers and channels. Historically, floods have occurred repeatedly as a result of: (i) – breaks in the dams along big rivers, e.g. after heavy rains and high water levels (in summer); (ii) – dam breaks caused by accumulation of ice-cakes in winter or during spring times; (iii) – dam breaks after storms on the sea with increasing sea water levels at the river outlets (mainly in winter); (iv) – overflow of water into flat land after heavy rains followed by slow drainage of water from the fields, ditches, channels and pumping stations (in summer); (v) – overflow of water into depressions and swamps below sea level after interruptions of, or decreases in, the pump operations at the pumping stations. The EU directive on flood control advises that the member countries should: (i) – produce maps of the areas vulnerable to floods to facilitate communication and planning; (ii) – develop management plans for flooding events; (iii) – exchange experience and codes of good practice during flood; (iv) – facilitate a close cooperation between the scientific community and politicians in the field of flood protection; (v) – raise the level of knowledge, communication and awareness among local societies living in areas prone to flooding.

Opis:
Results of the Vistula Delta Plain Quaternary recharge analysis are presented in this paper. This region is situated south of Gdańsk city near the Bay of Gdańsk. There are two municipal intakes situated on the Vistula Delta Plain: Lipce and Grodza Kamienna. Different exploitation of the municipal intakes is considered. The numerical calculations are made for the pre- 1969 period before the Lipce intake started discharging the Quaternary aquifer in the steady-state conditions and for the 15 years period after the opening of the Lipce intake, in the transient conditions. The results of calculations of the natural state of the Vistula Delta Plain Quaternary aquifer are also presented. The numerical calculations were carried out using the Modflow and Modpath code in Groundwater Modelling System (GMS 2.1) package. Presented results of numerical calculations show that the Quaternary aquifer exploited by groundwater intakes Lipce and Grodza Kamienna is connected with inflow from the Martwa Wisła River into the Vistula Delta Plain Quaternary aquifer and confirm the Quaternary aquifer groundwater flow evaluation based on Cl– ions concentration in the observation wells.

Opis:
Results of Quaternary aquifer flow calculations are presented for the Vistula Delta Plain and the southern Kashubian Lakeland edge zone. The Quaternary level is one of the most important water supply resources for the city of Gdansk. The numerical simulations of groundwater flow were performed using the Modflow and Modpath codes and the Groundwater Modeling System (GMS 3.1) package. Calculations representing the state prior to the launch of the Lipce intake were performed under steady state conditions. The model was calibrated, which enabled simulation of groundwater flow under transient conditions. Calculation for the years 1969-1985 have shown the evolution of a Quaternary aquifer depression cone. The inflow from river Dead Vistula to the Quaternary aquifer is recognized through particle path solution for a selected water particle. The numerical solution has confirmed the observed increase of Cl- ions in the Grodza Kamienna intake after 1969.

Opis:
The paper presents a comparative analysis of two different river mouths from two different geographical zones (subtropical and temperate climatic regions). One is the multi-branch and multi-spit mouth of the Red River on the Gulf of Tonkin (Vietnam), the other is the smaller delta of the river Vistula on a bay of the Baltic Sea (Poland). The analysis focuses on the similarities and differences in the hydrodynamics between these estuaries and the adjacent coastal zones, the features of sediment transport, and the long-term morphodynamics of the river outlets. Salinity and water level are also discussed, the latter also in the context of the anticipated global effect of accelerated sea level rise. The analysis shows that the climatic and environmental conditions associated with geographical zones give rise to fundamental differences in the generation and dynamic evolution of the river mouths.

Opis:
Until recently only two palaemonid species inhabited the southern Baltic: Palae- mon adspersus and Palaemonetes varians. Soon after the year 2000 a new species – Palaemon elegans – arrived and quickly established itself as a new component in the trophic web. The objects of this research were to define the energy value and energy resources of P. elegans and to compare them with the corresponding values for the native P. adspersus. These parameters will supply information about this new link in the trophic web and may help to explain the part played by the new prawn and its population in the energy flow. This work demonstrated that the energy values of both prawn species were very much the same: the average energy value of P. elegans was 16.5±2.1 J mg−1 DW (19.3 ± 2.5 J mg−1 AFDW) (N = 150), that of P. adspersus was 16.7 ± 2.1 J mg−1 DW (19.5 ± 2.5 J mg−1 AFDW) (N= 71). No statistically significant differences in energy value were found between the two species with respect to sex, size or season. The results show that P. elegans is an energetically valuable food item for predators. Its energy resources in Polish brackish coastal waters can be as high as 150 kJ m−2; the highest among the palaemonid species in this area, they constitute a rich supply of food for other organisms.

Opis:
Celem pracy jest określenie stanu i zmian rzeźby stożka ujściowego Wisły Przekop, w okresie lat 2009-2014, w relacji do oceny warunków swobodnego spływu wód Wisły. Stanowi to istotny element dla oceny skuteczności zapobiegania powodziom w rejonie Żuław. Podstawę badań stanowią szczegółowe, monitoringowe pomiary batymetrii i morfometrii stożka wraz z kanałem doprowadzającym. Stosowano nowoczesną aparaturę (głównie DGPS RTK i specjalistyczne systemy nawigacyjne oraz echosondę wielowiązkową) zapewniającą uzyskanie cyfrowego modelu powierzchni dna, z decymetrową dokładnością położenia punktów.
The aim of this study is to determine the state and changes of the Vistula Canal (Wisła Przekop) external delta relief, in the period of 2009-2014, and in relation to the assessment of the conditions of free runoff of the Vistula River waters. This is an important element for assessing the effectiveness of flood prevention in the area of Żuławy. The basis of the study are detailed bathymetry monitoring and morphometric measurements of the external delta with the supply channel. Modern equipment was used (mainly RTK and DGPS specialist navigation systems and multibeam echosounder), providing the obtainment of a digital model of the seabed surface, with decimeter accuracy of location points. In subsequent years, a series of bathymetric maps for the scale of 1:10 000 was made, as well as relief maps and maps of differential changes of the relief. The observed significant changes in the nature of the relief (with relatively small changes in the contours of the delta), indicate their important role in shaping the conditions of free runoff Vistula waters.

Opis:
During the catastrophic flood caused by the ice dam in 1840, a new river mouth was created. Nevertheless some series of floods were observed in the next years. In order to facilitate of river waters run-off, the artificial crosscut was performed in 1891-1895 years. The artificial channel was opened in 31st of March 1895. Since, at the time of continuous exploitation of the channel, high effectiveness of the engineering project which is unique in the world scale has been confirmed. A permanent flood hazard for Gdansk city and adjacent lowland areas has been receded. Since this time, the external delta is being formed by acumulation of bed-loaded sediment that is transporting by the river. Consequently free run-off of the river water is reducing due to the external delta growing. During the years 2009-2014, detailed monitoring researches of the Vistula Canal as well as the Vistula River External Delta have been performed. The obtained results constitute a basis for the evaluation of flood risk in the area, as well as for prognosis of morphological changes of the Vistula River External Delta and sand supply to the Gulf of Gdansk. The state of the Vistula River mouth canal is briefly presented after 120 years of its history.
Podczas katastrofalnej powodzi w 1840 roku doszło do utworzenia nowego ujścia, tak zwanej Wisły Śmiałej. W ciągu kolejnych lat nadal jednak wystepowały sytuacje powodzie. Podjeto wiec decyzję o wykonaniu odpowiedniego przekopu dla zapewnienia skutecznej ochrony przeciwpowodziowej. Przekop został otwarty 31 marca 1895 roku. Podczas kolejnych lat użytkowania Przekopu Wisły jego skuteczność została potwierdzona. Rumowisko piaszczyste wynoszone przez rzekę, składane przy jej ujsciu, zaczeło formowac stożek ujściowy – tak zwana zewnetrzną deltę.W miarę jej wzrostu następuje jednak zmiejszanie możliwości swobodnego spływu wód. W latach 2009-2014 przeprowadzono szczegółowe badania monitoringowe Przekopu Wisły i delty zewnętrznej. Uzyskane wyniki stanowią podstawę do oceny stanu przekopu i jego mozliwosci zapewnienia swobodnego spływu, wraz z prognozą zmian delty zewnetrznej i szacowniem ilosci dostarczanego materiału piaszczystego do Zatoki Gdańskiej.
