Opis:
An original wireless sensor network for vibration measurements was designed. Its primary purpose is modal analysis of vibrations of large structures. A number of experiments have been performed to evaluate the system, with special emphasis on the influence of different effects on simultaneity of data acquired from remote nodes, which is essential for modal analysis. One of the issues is that quartz crystal oscillators, which provide time reading on the devices, are optimized for use in the room temperature and exhibit significant frequency variations if operated outside the 20–30°C range. Although much research was performed to optimize algorithms of synchronization in wireless networks, the subject of temperature fluctuations was not investigated and discussed in proportion to its significance. This paper describes methods used to evaluate data simultaneity and some algorithms suitable for its improvement in small to intermediate size ad-hoc wireless sensor networks exposed to varying temperatures often present in on-site civil engineering measurements.

Many applications of wireless sensor networks (WSN) require information about the geographical location of each sensor node. Self-organization and localization capabilities are one of the most important requirements in sensor networks. This paper provides an overview of centralized distance-based algorithms for estimating the positions of nodes in a sensor network. We discuss and compare three approaches: semidefinite programming, simulated annealing and two-phase stochastic optimization-a hybrid scheme that we have proposed. We analyze the properties of all listed methods and report the results of numerical tests. Particular attention is paid to our technique-the two-phase method-that uses a combination of trilateration, and stochastic optimization for performing sensor localization. We describe its performance in the case of centralized and distributed implementations.

The power boiler erection process requires temporary suspending of buckstays (Fig. 1). The aim of buckstays installation is to brace screens of combustion chamber. Suspending of buckstays is performed by means of strand jacks and steel rods. The amount, location and force ranges of each rods are modelled on the basis of static structural strength computations. In the paper the force sensor network incorporated into computer and wireless communication system designed to prevent overloading of the rods resulting from force asymmetry or computational faults is introduced and next subjected to optimization procedure. The operational data delivered by the network and recorded on the system hard drives let the authors perform the correlation analysis and linear regression to reduce the number of sensors. Thus two stage hierarchic algorithm which constructs the set of models for every single sensor and estimates their parameters, and then using genetic procedure minimizes a certain loss function to automate the sensor network optimization process is introduced. As a result, such investigation could significantly reduce cost of the whole system.

The work treats the problem of fault detection for processes described by partial differential equations as that of maximizing the power of a parametric hypothesis test which checks whether or not system parameters have nominal values. A simple node activation strategy is discussed for the design of a sensor network deployed in a spatial domain that is supposed to be used while detecting changes in the underlying parameters which govern the process evolution. The setting considered relates to a situation where from among a finite set of potential sensor locations only a subset of them can be selected because of the cost constraints. As a suitable performance measure, the Ds-optimality criterion defined on the Fisher information matrix for the estimated parameters is applied. The problem is then formulated as the determination of the density of gauged sites so as to maximize the adopted design criterion, subject to inequality constraints incorporating a maximum allowable sensor density in a given spatial domain. The search for the optimal solution is performed using a simplicial decomposition algorithm. The use of the proposed approach is illustrated by a numerical example involving sensor selection for a two-dimensional diffusion process.

Opis:
Due to the severe damages of nuclear accidents, there is still an urgent need to develop efficient radiation detection wireless sensor networks (RDWSNs) that precisely monitor irregular radioactivity. It should take actions that mitigate the severe costs of accidental radiation leakage, especially around nuclear sites that are the primary sources of electric power and many health and industrial applications. Recently, leveraging machine learning (ML) algorithms to RDWSNs is a promising solution due to its several pros, such as online learning and self-decision making. This paper addresses novel and efficient ML-based RDWSNs that utilize millimeter waves (mmWaves) to meet future network requirements. Specifically, we leverage an online learning multi-armed bandit (MAB) algorithm called Thomson sampling (TS) to a 5G enabled RDWSN to efficiently forward the measured radiation levels of the distributed radiation sensors within the monitoring area. The utilized sensor nodes are lightweight smart radiation sensors that are mounted on mobile devices and measure radiation levels using software applications installed in these mobiles. Moreover, a battery aware TS (BATS) algorithm is proposed to efficiently forward the sensed radiation levels to the fusion decision center. BA-TS reflects the remaining battery of each mobile device to prolong the network lifetime. Simulation results ensure the proposed BA-TS algorithm’s efficiency regards throughput and network lifetime over TS and exhaustive search method.

Opis:
In a typical moving contaminating source identification problem, after some type of biological or chemical contamination has occurred, there is a developing cloud of dangerous or toxic material. In order to detect and localize the contamination source, a sensor network can be used. Up to now, however, approaches aiming at guaranteeing a dense region coverage or satisfactory network connectivity have dominated this line of research and abstracted away from the mathematical description of the physical processes underlying the observed phenomena. The present work aims at bridging this gap and meeting the needs created in the context of the source identification problem. We assume that the paths of the moving sources are unknown, but they are sufficiently smooth to be approximated by combinations of given basis functions. This parametrization makes it possible to reduce the source detection and estimation problem to that of parameter identification. In order to estimate the source and medium parameters, the maximum--ikelihood estimator is used. Based on a scalar measure of performance defined on the Fisher information matrix related to the unknown parameters, which is commonly used in optimum experimental design theory, the problem is formulated as an optimal control one. From a practical point of view, it is desirable to have the computations dynamic data driven, i.e., the current measurements from the mobile sensors must serve as a basis for the update of parameter estimates and these, in turn, can be used to correct the sensor movements. In the proposed research, an attempt will also be made at applying a nonlinear model-predictive-control-like approach to attack this issue.

The recent decades have seen the growth in the fields of wireless communication technologies, which has made it possible to produce components with a rational cost of a few cubic millimeters of volume, called sensors. The collaboration of many of these wireless sensors with a basic base station gives birth to a network of wireless sensors. The latter faces numerous problems related to application requirements and the inadequate abilities of sensor nodes, particularly in terms of energy. In order to integrate the different models describing the characteristics of the nodes of a WSN, this paper presents the topological organization strategies to structure its communication. For large networks, partitioning into sub-networks (clusters) is a technique used to reduce consumption, improve network stability and facilitate scalability.

An advantage of using the framework is converging simulation with the real software. Instead of creating a model of the sensor network node, the same software is used in real sensor network nodes and in the simulation framework. Operation of the framework is illustrated with examples of simulations of selected transactions in the sensor network.

In this paper a summary is given of the ongoing research at the Belgian Royal Military Academy in the field of mobile ad hoc networks in general and wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in particular. In this study, all wireless sensor networks are based on the physical and the medium access layer of the IEEE 802.15.4 low rate wireless personal area networks standard. The paper gives a short overview of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard in the beaconless mode together with a description of the sensor nodes and the software used throughout this work. The paper also reports on the development of a packet sniffer for IEEE 802.15.4 integrated in wireshark. This packet sniffer turns out to be indispensable for debugging purposes. In view of future applications on the wireless network, we made a theoretical study of the effective data capacity and compared this with measurements performed on a real sensor network. The differences between measurements and theory are explained. In case of geograph- ically meaningful sensor data, it is important to have a knowledge of the relative position of each node. In the last part of the paper we present some experimental results of positioning based on the received signal strength indicators (RSSI). As one could expect, the accuracy of such a method is poor, even in a well controlled environment. But the method has some potential.

Recently, forest fire monitoring system in wireless sensor networks has received much attention. The conventional scheme receives fire alert data quickly to inform about fire forest event. However, since two or more nodes may detect a fire, high priority fire detection data frequently collide. In this paper, a new forest fire monitoring system is proposed in order to reduce high priority fire detection data dropped rate, by specifying a high priority received data immediately after fire detection and just before the destruction by fire. Furthermore, the node only transmits high priority data to a node, which has a low possibility of destruction by fire for low end-to-end delay of high priority fire detection data. The simulation results show that proposed scheme can reduce high priority data dropped ratio and the end-to-end delay, and have less effect of wind direction compared with the conventional scheme.

A new method of lossless Secure Data Aggregation for Wireless Sensor Network is presented. Secure Data Aggregation is achieved using the popular Chinese Remainder theorem. Here, an ‘Augmented Chinese Remainder System’ is introduced that incorporates additional features to enforce a higher level of security to the aggregated data. The scheme provides inbuilt signature verification and eliminates the need for separate data validation algorithms. The method achieves data integrity and authentication simultaneously in addition to lossless data aggregation for the data forwarded from the Cluster Head to the Base Station. The aggregate contains the entire individual data from sensors in the encrypted form and the receiver deaggregates it to get the original data in full without any loss. The Augmented Chinese Remainder System can be extended to secure Multi-level Data Aggregation for WSN.

Wireless acoustic sensor networks (WASN) usually demand uninterrupted and reliable data transmissions and an efficient path from the source nodes to the destination nodes, thus ensuring reliable delivery of sensitive or critical data with the use of multipath routing protocols. This paper presents a novel agent-driven WASN relying on a set of static and mobile agents. In the proposed technique, the location address is functioned into the operating node and the destination node. Calculations of the midpoint between the operating and the destination nodes are followed by identifying the shortest path based on a reference axis, using a mobile agent and a location address. Such an approach aims to ensure maximum utilization of the communicating paths. Based on the information concerning partial topology of the network, the destination node computes the weight factor and multiple paths using node distances, energy ratios and efficiencies of specific links. Then, the destination node selects the appropriate path from the multiple paths available, to transmit the data. This article also analyzes the performance of the proposed system with various parameters taken into consideration and shows its efficiency in comparison to other existing techniques.

The problem of fault detection in distributed parameter systems (DPSs) is formulated as that of maximizing the power of a parametric hypothesis test which checks whether or not system parameters have nominal values. The setting considered relates to a situation where from among a finite set of potential sensor locations only a subset can be selected because of the cost constraints. As a suitable performance measure, the Ds-optimality criterion defined on the Fisher information matrix for the estimated parameters is applied. Then, the solution of a resulting combinatorial problem is determined based on the branch-and-bound method. As its essential part, a relaxed problem is discussed in which the sensor locations are given a priori and the aim is to determine the associated weights, which quantify the contributions of individual gauged sites. The concavity and differentiability properties of the criterion are established and a gradient projection algorithm is proposed to perform the search for the optimal solution. The delineated approach is illustrated by a numerical example on a sensor network design for a two-dimensional convective diffusion process.
