Opis:
The operating conditions of magnetic fluid seals during reciprocating motion are so different from those observed in rotating motion that the use of their conventional structures for reciprocating motion seals yields no good results. The analysis of the sealing mechanism of magnetic fluid seals in reciprocating motion shows that the operation of these seals is affected by the carry-over phenomenon and magnetic fluid film deformation in the sealing gap, which depends on the velocity of the reciprocating motion. The reduced amount of magnetic fluid in the sealing gap caused by the reciprocating motion of the shaft is the main reason for seal failures. The paper presents a short characterisation of magnetic fluid sealing technology, the principle of sealing, the operation of the magnetic fluid and the seal failure mechanism in linear motion of the shaft. Moreover, some new structural designs of hybrid seals, being combinations of typical hydraulic seals with magnetic fluid seals for reciprocating motion, and some examples of magnetic fluid sealing structures for hydraulic cylinders and piston compressors which havepractical application values are presented.

Opis:
The analysis concerns a double seal with a concentric arrangement of sealing degrees. The design of the seal is based on some known properties of self-controlled face impulse seals. The surface geometry of the ring faces was modified so that the height of the gap could be self-controlled. In order to maintain a desired face separation, it is necessary to control the opening force that acts on the flexibly mounted ring. When formulating the mathematical model of the impulse face seal we took into account the equation of balance of the flow rate in the face gap. Some characteristics are provided to illustrate the performance of the seal with an internal control system.

Opis:
This paper presents a preliminary, numerical what-if analysis of selected geometrical parameters of the tip seal of the last stage of an aircraft engine turbine and the impact of the parameters on the leakage mass ow. The analysis is a part of the task of improving the rotor tip seal conguration in aircraft turbines. Calculations were carried out using the commercial computational uid dynamics code. A straight-through seal with two leaning ns and a honeycomb land was analysed. The computational model was prepared based on some simplications introduced to improve the eciency of the calculations. The rotor entire blade-to-blade channel was analysed, while the seal pitch was reduced to the dimensions of two honeycomb cells. The geometry of the ns themselves was simplied too. In the original variant, the n tips had caps to protect them from wear (shape deformation) due to rubbing. In the simplied model, the caps were omitted. The simplications did not change the leakage mass ow signicantly. Several variants of changes in the basic geometrical parameters of the seal were analysed to assess their eect on the leakage mass ow for altered ow conditions. Parameters such as the n thickness, the n inclination angle and the position of the ns and of the entire labyrinth were analysed. The best seal variant was selected, the ow phenomena were commented on and some points in the design of this type of the labyrinth seal were discussed.

This paper presents the influence of geometry simplification on the results obtained in the computational fluid dynamics simulation. The subject of simulation was part of the honeycomb seal located at the inlet to high pressure part of a steam turbine. There were three diferent geometrical models assumed in the calculations. First one was two-dimensional case and two others were three-dimensional, one with the radius of curvature and one without. Numerical simulations were performed for 15 sets of boundary conditions to compare flow characteristics for each geometrical case.

Fault Seal Analysis (FSA)

Opis:
The Solokha gas field is one of the most valuable hydrocarbon fields in the central axial part of the Dnieper-Donets Basin (DDB). Every new exploration well there has to be highly validated in order to reduce possible drilling risks. In this study, the characteristics of faults, as possible seals, are analysed, based on the latest well and 3D seismic data. Evaluating fault seal risk is a constitutive factor in hydrocarbon exploration and production. For this reason, to reduce uncertainty in the faults’ leaking facilities, we used a couple of known approaches, such as juxtaposition analysis, with building Allan diagrams, to determine the relationship between sand-sand juxtaposition and the occurrence of hydrocarbons-bearing sands. We used the Shale Gouge Ratio (SGR) calculation with prediction of clay content distribution along the faults, pressure data analysis, seismic at tributes modelling and self-organized map clustering analysis for accurate delineation of sand bodies shape. This represents a complex research method of integration of high-quality depth processing with seismic structural and stratigraphic interpretation and, also, geological modeling. In this paper, we assessed the Jurassic and Visean faults of the Solokha gas field, according to their fluid cross-flow facilities. This research will provide valuable information about the presence of prospective places for hydrocarbon accumulation and will likely impact the well staking process for the upcoming drilling.

Opis:
Rotordynamic characteristics of a high temperature sodium liquid (HTSL) seal were studied in this paper by using CFD software. Compared with the water liquid seal, the HTSL seal has a larger leakage flow rate and a lower drag power loss. The HTSL seal has a larger direct stiffness coefficient and the effective stiffness coefficient Keff is also larger than the water liquid seal, which means the HTSL seal has a better stiffness capacity. The HTSL seal possesses a positive effective damping coefficient Ceff in the whole whirling frequency range, which means better stability for the rotor system especially in high rotor speeds.

Opis:
The goal of the presented work is an optimization of the geometrical configuration of the tip seal with a honeycomb land, to reduce the leakage flow in the counter-rotating LP turbine of a contra-rotating open rotor aero-engine. This goal was achieved with the use of the Ansys-CFX commercial code and an in-house optimization procedure. The detailed studies including the mesh influence, the stages of the computational domain simplification, and geometry variants are discussed. The optimization process is based on a single objective genetic algorithm (SOGA). The automatic grid generation process and the CFD calculations are based on scripts prepared under the Ansys-ICEM and Ansys-CFX software. The whole procedure is written in the Visual Basic for Applications language (VBA), which allows a direct access to the CAD software with the use of macros and allows a proper connection between the CAD environment and the CFD software. The described algorithm allows parallel computing. In addition to the optimization studies, a sensitivity analysis was also performed. For this purpose, the Elementary Effects Method (EEM) was used. This paper was written within the DREAM European project (Validation of Radical Engine Architecture Systems) of the 7th Framework Program of the European Union.

In the paper, the authors present the solution aimed at increasing reliability of the conveyor units. The analysis of technological and operational defects of conveyor rollers is presented. The changes in manufacturing technology have been proposed, which allowed for avoiding welding and provided the required level of tightness. Computer simulation of the motion of air in the labyrinth seal of the roller was conducted to determine the numerical parameters of possible airflows. It is proved that the airflow is present in the gap of the labyrinth seal due to the roller rotation. It is shown that the reason for the penetration of abrasive particles through the labyrinth seal after stopping is decompression, which occurred as a result of temperature change and push out of airflows during rotation. It is also suggested that the number of stops during the operation should be taken into account when determining the durability of rollers. Practical recommendations are given for preventing the penetration of abrasive particles during conveyor stops and the need for combined seals. The results can be used for the construction of roller conveyor belts in any industry.

Use of the magnetic fluid seal technology in water is much more difficult technological problem in comparison to gas or vacuum environment. Some seals constructed up to time been are designed as hybrid, two stage sealing structures with shields or mechanical seals used as protection measures to the magnetic fluid seal. Anyway, there is always problem with immediate contact between magnetic fluid and the environmental liquid. In the paper are presented results of experiments carried out with one stage rotating magnetic fluid seal operating in immediate contact with utility water. The special test procedures have been elaborated and practically used, with the aim to define main characteristics of magnetic fluid seals and to simplify experiments. These characteristics were: critical pressure, critical motion velocity and working life of the seal. Four grades of commercial, silicon based magnetic fluids of hydrophobic properties were tested in a single stage sealing system. The results of tests are presented in the form of tables and diagrams. It is concluded that hydrophobic commercial magnetic fluids could be efficiently used in rotating shaft seals however in a limited range of motion velocity.

Opis:
Magnetic fluid seals belong to the class of non-contact seals. They are used as protective seals for vacuum systems, high speed shafts, precision mechanics, and electromechanical devices. The proper functioning of the magnetic fluid seal is related to creating and maintaining the continuity of the fluid ring on the sealing stage. This is achieved by appropriately shaped magnetic field distribution in the region of the sealing stage. Consequently, one of the main issues with the construction of such seals is to determine the distribution of the magnetic field in this region. This paper presents the results of analytical calculations and numerical simulations, based on which the influence of selected geometric parameters on the critical pressure and motion resistance was determined.

Opis:
The iconographic motif of the birdman emerged in Mesopotamian glyptic art in the Early Dynastic period and disappeared at the end of the Akkadian period. Its meaning remains ambiguous, particularly due to the fact that the figure is represented in scenes of varying character and it cannot be identified with any character known from myths. Sometimes, the creature may be recognised as a deity based on a horned crown, yet this is not always the case. Among the deities attested in the scenes with birdman, one can easily identify Shamash and Enki. The examined material contains 62 published seals or seal impressions with the birdman motif, both from the Early Dynastic and the Akkadian period. The latest monographic studies of this subject were published in the 1950s. Interpretations presented by the authors of said works, though often quoted in the research on the motif, seem to lack proper argumentation and, to an large extent, are outdated due to a considerable progress of the research on Sumero-Akkadian iconography and an increase, although modest, in study material, among other things. In light of the above, it is worth analysing this motif one more time.

The Wankel engine is one of only few alternatives to the reciprocating engines. The advantages such as good value of maximum engine power to its mass ratio are still present and can have great sense in selected fields of application, for example General Aviation. Nevertheless the disadvantages of the Wankel engine design have never lost its importance and still pose an obstacle to wider use of the Wankel engine. One of the main drawbacks is the rotor sealing system design, especially the apex seal where single siat has to fulfil a purpose of conventional engine piston rings pack. Moreover the unfavourable changes of the apex seal angle of attack causes that optimal shape of the apex seal sliding surface, in aspects of the oil film parameters, can not be achieved. These results in worsening of apex seal elements mating conditions, reducing its effectiveness and durability. In the paper authors present results of simulation researches where oil film parameters, for example oil film thickness, which determines apex seal durability, were obtained for different engine operating conditions and various shapes of apex seal sliding surface geometry. The results indicate possible directions during apex seal designing process which should provide oil film continuity in whole rotor angle position range and for wide engine operation conditions range.

Opis:
It is commonly known that the sealing performance of dynamic seals is significantly influenced by the surface finish. To reduce friction effect and leakage ratio, new generations of grooved lip or shaft have emerged, but only two computational models were performed up to now with a textured elastomeric lip: spiral groove in the axial direction or micro-cavities according to the circumferential direction. However, if the numerical results have confirmed the slight effect of the grooved lip on the rotary lip seal performances, it seems relevant to investigate the influence of such grooves on the reciprocating hydraulic rod seal behavior. Thus, the scope of this work is to perform a parametric study of the grooved lip throughout a one-dimensional elastohydrodynamic model by taking into account the elasticity of the lip and the shaft roughness. After confirming the validity of the current model, numerical simulations have been performed and compared with experiments. The effect of lip grooves on the hydraulic rod seal behavior in outstroke and instroke shaft motion has been underlined. Thereby, it is shown that the leakage and the average film thickness are sensible to both the depth and the density of the lip groove. Additionally, a slight effect of the pattern shape is observed on the friction force.
