Opis:
The article is focused on the most recent investigations of glaciotectonic structures in high escarpment exposures of the Vistula valley from Dobrzyń to Kuzki in the western part of the Płock Basin. Deformations involve Neogene and occasionally the Lower Pleistocene deposits and they are not expressed as landforms. Structural investigations and analysis of archival geological data provided new information on the origin of large-scale shear structures. Results obtained are clearly contrary to the concept of Brykczyński (1982) regarding valley-side glaciotectonics in the Płock Basin. An emergence of the extensive zone of serial thrust structures of significant amplitude (up to 100–150 m) was found to have not been controlled by a palaeovalley. A driving mechanism is interpreted as a gravity spreading in front of ice sheets advancing from north-northeast during the South Polish Complex (Dorst-Elsterian).

Opis:
Vistulian climatic changes are recorded in various sedimentary environments of central Poland, both in the extraglacial zone of the last glaciation and also in the area occupied by the last Scandinavian Ice Sheet, being reflected by palaeobotanical, palaeozoological, sedimentological and geochronological data. The most pronounced morphogenetic processes are linked to a glacial succession in the northern part of the study area, referred to the Upper Plenivistulian. For most of the study area, located in the extraglacial zone, the climatic changes are reconstructed from lake-bog, fluvial, slope and aeolian sedimentary successions. In central Poland, no site has been documented so far where there would be a continuous biogenic record through the whole Vistulian. Environmental changes recorded through the Vistulian include temperature, vegetation and the dynamics of morphogenetic processes, and sedimentary environments most useful for assessing changes occurring at that time may be indicated. The Early Vistulian is best recognized within biogenic deposits, as in the older part of Plenivistulian. The conditions in the earlier part of the Plenivistulian are best reported from fluvial and slope deposits with evidence of permafrost and of glacial conditions, though only in the northern part of the study area. Changing conditions of the Late Vistulian are expressed via well-documented morphogenetic processes occurring in all (except glacial) sedimentary environments, lake-bog and aeolian environments providing the most complete information about the nature of this period. Most of the Vistulian deposits reflect cold periods. There is a distinctive increase in periglacial impacts throughout the Plenivistulian with the apogee during the Upper Plenivistulian and interstadial warmings did not influence this trend. Each sedimentary environment provides significant data about the climate evolution, and processes playing a leading role vary according to the Vistulian stratigraphic unit. The consolidation of findings from regional research has provided new directions for further interdisciplinary studies.

Opis:
In October 2012, the Conservation Laboratory of the Institute of Archaeology at the NCU in Toruń received soil samples excavated from a kurgan in Grudna, Złotów commune, dated to the Roman period. No human remains were reported inside the grave chamber apart from some elements of grave goods: a glass bead, a clay spindle whorl, three iron nails, fragments of a bone pin, bronze and iron chest fittings, and a bronze vessel with a stamp of Pubius Cipius Polybius, who was active around the first half of the 1st century AD. In result of a cleaning treatment removing all soil impurities, tiny textile fragments were obtained, which were, interestingly, made of woollen fibres in sprang technique, while some of them imitated gauze (known in later periods) but were manufactured in a plain 1/1 weave. Technological analysis of the fibres revealed their high quality with average fibre thickness ranging from 8 to 18 μm. Insufficient material base for these textiles in Poland does not give a convincing answer to a basic question of whether it was an import or local production. Studies on the subject performed by European researchers, most notably J. Maik, indicate local or North European production. Hopefully, more light will be shed on this problem by further comparative studies.

The article collects the modest evidence available on the use (and possible production) of ceramic building material by the Roman army in Colchis, using it as a backdrop for presenting the exceptional richness, in quantity as much as diversity, of the finds from Gonio/Apsaros. The signatures on these products add to the value of this assemblage. Part 1 of the article presents documented examples of stamps on bricks, roof tiles and ceramic pipes from the Gonio/Apsaros fort and links them to the construction projects of specific Roman army units in the Cappadocia province. The results of laboratory tests conducted on samples of ceramic products and raw clay from Gonio, presented in Part 2, distinguish between two reference groups for the production of which clay from near the fort was used. However, it has not been possible to indicate the specific deposits of such raw material used by the Roman army.

Introduction: With the rising number of elderly patients and increasing incidence of colorectal cancer, management of geriatric patients has become the forefront of colorectal surgery. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the short-term surgical outcomes that follow colorectal resection in elderly patients. Materials and methods: A total of 464 patients who underwent surgical resection for colorectal tumor between 2013 and 2017 were included. The patients were divided into a group of the elderly (≥75 years) and the young (<75 years). Clinicopathological data of the patients were reviewed retrospectively. Results: The elderly group constituted 30% of the study population. A greater number of patients in the elderly group underwent Hartmann’s procedure (p = 0.02) and right hemicolectomy (p = 0.029), and younger patients more often received low anterior resection (p = 0.027). The duration of the surgical procedure was shorter in the elderly group (p < 0.01) but they stayed in the hospital one day longer (p = 0.023). Postoperative complications and mortality tended to be higher in seniors (p = 0.088). The younger patients showed a tendency towards a higher rate of distant metastases (p = 0.053). Seniors received fewer preoperative chemoradiation in comparison to the young group (p = 0.014). Conclusion: Older persons constitute one-third of patients treated electively in colorectal departments. Colorectal surgery in geriatric patients is associated with a prolonged hospital stay and a higher potential for complications and mortality.

Opis:
The excavations conducted at the Przeworsk culture settlement in Modlniczka, site no. 2, have provided an exceptional series of wooden artefacts, numbering in total 396 specimens. The marshy soil of the Wedonka river paleochannel is responsible for the good state of preservation of the wood, due to which a significant number of relics of wooden constructions were discovered Numerous posts were recorded, being remnants of constructions of pier type, a hut with a fragment of a ridge beam and relics of plaited walls, rectangular platforms made of beams and branches associated with an offering hole and, finally, two wells. The most common wooden artefacts are represented by construction elements of various sorts, such as: fragments of trunks or branches bearing traces of cutting or chipping, beams, pickets, laths. The most interesting, although scarce, were fragments of wooden portable objects. Amongst them, one should name: wooden swords for flax beating, a club, hooks, wooden pivots, a spoke, hexagonal boards, a beam and a lath with holes, an arch-shaped haft, a bowl, a semi-finished kneading-trough and a fragment of a spear shaft. As indicated by dendrochronological dating obtained for part of the wooden artefacts, they should be dated to the younger pre-Roman period (the 2nd–1st century BC).
Wśród nich warto wymienić: drewniane miecze do rozbijania lnu, pałkę, haki, czopy drewniane, szprychę koła, sześciokątne płyty, belkę i dranicę z otworami, łukowato ukształtowaną rękojeść, misę, półwytwór dzieży oraz fragment drzewca włóczni.

Opis:
In the course of the excavations conducted in 2014 at site no. 3 in Kryspinów, com. Liszki, the north-eastern zone of the Przeworsk settlement was investigated. The settlement in question, and the northward located cemetery dated to the same period, was investigated by the Institute of Archaeology of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, in the years 1968–1998. The research presented here covered an area of ca. 16.5 ares, and resulted in the discovery of 186 archaeological features, mostly semi-dugouts and postholes. In the east, the settlement was adjacent to a bank running along the paleochannel of the Vistula river. Towards the north-east and north, the alignment of encountered features was not very dense, which may be due to fact that the investigations merely caught the fringes of the settlement. The trenches located in the southern part of the explored area were characterised by a great accumulation of features and artefacts. Almost three thousand fragments of pottery were obtained. They were mainly discovered within the fills of features, although some of them were also found within the cultural layer up to 40 cm thick. Among the metal artefacts, a Trajan denarius and five fibulae were especially noteworthy. The great majority of pottery represented forms typical of the Przeworsk culture. Based on the dating of ceramic vessels, this part of the settlement should be dated to the period from the A3 phase of the younger pre-Roman period until the C1a phase of the Roman Period. The archaeological material obtained from the cultural layer contained artefacts dated to other cultural units as well, such as those of the Neolithic, Bronze and Middle Ages.
W trakcie badań w 2014 roku rozpoznano północno-wschodni obszar osady kultury przeworskiej na st. 3 w Kryspinowie, gm. Liszki.

Opis:
Background: Reoperations in colorectal surgery are usually a consequence of major surgical complications. Recently, the rate of reoperation has been proposed as a marker of surgical performance. Yet, the incidence of re-intervention varies significantly in literature, ranging from 5.2% to 13%. Therefore, in this study we investigated 30-day reoperation rates and made an attempt to identify risk factors of re-intervention following colorectal resection at our institution. Methods: This is a retrospective study of patients who had undergone colorectal resection at a single institution from 2013 to 2017. Univariate and multivariate analysis of predicting factors were performed. Results: Out of 464 patients included, 51 required reoperations (11%). The most common causes of reoperations were anastomotic leakage, postoperative bleeding, and wound dehiscence. In univariate analysis the age of the patient and location of the tumor were related to an increased rate of reoperation. In multivariate analysis patients older than 75 (OR = 2.1; 95%CI = 1.1–3.9) and tumors sited in the rectum (OR = 2.66; 95%CI = 1.4–5) were associated with an increased risk of re-intervention. Patients who required postoperative re-intervention stayed in hospital longer (14 vs. 6 days, P < 0.0001) and had higher mortality (9.8% vs. 1.2%, P = 0.002). Conclusions: Our study shows that reoperation rates that follow colorectal surgery are frequently undervalued. In our series, 11% of patients required an unplanned return to the operative room. Patient’s age and rectal tumors were the two independent factors that affect the rate of reoperation. Novel aspect: Data concerning reoperation rates in colorectal surgery is varying and most reports have shown the incidence of re-intervention to be as low as 5–7%. Our study demonstrates that reoperations after curative surgery for colorectal cancer are more frequent and may occur in over a tenth of total patients operated on.

W artykule podjęto próbę odtworzenia planów politycznych Romana Dmowskiego z lat 1916–1917 i skonfrontowania ich z planami wojenno-politycznymi Ententy, a szczególnie kierunkami polityki zagranicznej Francji i Wielkiej Brytanii. Wyeksponowano przede wszystkim dwie analizy polityczne Dmowskiego.
The present article attempts to retrace Roman Dmowski’s political plans from the years 1916–1917, and to confront them with the military and political plans of the Entente, especially the foreign policies of France and Great Britain. Particular focus was given to two of Dmowski’s political analyses. The first one from early 1917, when he feared that the war might end too soon, thus reducing Poland’s chances of regaining independence; the second one related to his instructions sent by the Polish Central Agency in Lausanne to the Inter-Party Political Circle in Warsaw on 15 May 1917.

There are 35 discovered objects of this kind of specimen so far, of which 31 are Norwegian imitations. The discussed brooches are generally dated to phase B2 – especially its later part. It should be noted, however, that a few specimens may occur within phase C1a. The currently used division of the AV brooches of series 6 type 107 and 108 does not seem to take into account typological criteria other than just a form of the transition between the upper part of the bow and the head-plate covering the spring. For this reason, a new classification has been proposed of the discussed fibulae into four variants: 107A, 107B, 108A and 108B. AV series 6 brooches are mainly made of bronze, occasionally of silver. They are often very richly decorated with thin plates, filigree or granulation of precious metals and usually come as a part of grave inventories of women of high social status.
