Opis:
Aim: The aim of the paper is to analyze the selected components characterizing the demographic potential and the state of social infrastructure in the rural-urban Municipality of Wleń. Design/Research methods: The data derived from the Local Data Bank of the Central Statistical Office was analyzed, describing population structure, number and density, natural growth, number of marriages as well as the data on social infrastructure, i.e. healthcare, welfare, security, education, sport and culture. In addition, the analyses covered also data from participant observation and data obtained in the course of the public consultations conducted in relation to the development strategy for the years 2015-2022, devised for the municipality of Wleń. The research was conducted for the time period from 2004 to 2014 – the choice was driven by the wish to carry out observations that would span a decade. Conclusions / findings: The Municipality of Wleń is undergoing depopulation and succumbing to negative consequences relating to the process. The municipality needs active, creative and young population in order to secure future development. Yet, this is a group of well informed consumers of space who expect specific services (including education), hence maintaining an adequate level of social infrastructure provided by the municipality should become a high-priority target for the local authorities. Positive changes can be observed such as better childcare provided in nurseries. While facing aging population, lacking a social welfare home may become a growing problem. The sense of security, on the other hand, is certainly an asset the municipality space offers Originality / value of the article: The findings of the studies are useful for local self-government. Implications of the research: The research findings may prove helpful for the municipality management.

Opis:
Popularity of long-distance running has increased as well as number of female and male marathon runners. Whilst research into physiological characteristics of endurance trained athletes has significantly increased there are only few studies on the risk factors for respiratory failure in marathon runners. Therefore, the aim of the study was to evaluate the differences in respiratory function and the physiological strain in the response to exercise stress in marathon runners. Twenty three subjects (aged 36.1 ±11.6 years) participated in a marathon running. Prior to the run and after its completion, body mass and composition, spirometry and body temperature were measured. Based on pre- and post-run temperature and changes in heart rate, the physiological strain index (PSI) was calculated. Long-distance running significantly decreased the temperature of body surfaces (p < 0.05); no significant effects were observed regarding aural canal temperature and physiological strain index (PSI). Compared to resting values, post-marathon spirometry revealed a significant decrease in post-marathon forced expiratory volume (p < 0.05), peak expiratory flow (p < 0.05) and maximal expiratory flow values (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the long-distance running results in functional changes within the respiratory system which may limit the adaptive potential and decrease exercise tolerance.

Opis:
The article is a substantive summary of research conducted by the Institute of Production Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology in Zabrze, covering the determination of ways to reduce traffic noise in the selected area of the city of Zabrze using measurement and simulation methods. The analysis was conducted within the Project Based Learning (PBL) project which aimed at teaching a selected group of students teamwork, synthesizing information from various sources, making decisions and taking responsibility for them, planning and organizing work and proper time management.

Opis:
Changes in CDKN2a gene are known to be linked with sporadic melanoma and hereditary predisposition to this cancer. In the Polish population mutations in the coding region of the CDKN2a gene are rather rare, therefore the attention has been focused on polymorphisms and alterations in uncoding regions such as 3' UTR. The aim of this study was to analyze two common polymorphisms, Ala148Thr and 500 C/G, and correlate them with the clinical course of melanoma. DNA from 285 patients was analyzed and found polymorphisms were correlated with the clinical parameters employing statistical methods. The obtained results allow us to conclude: (i) survival times of 500 C/G carriers vs. cumulating proportion surviving was not statistically significant; (ii) CDKN2a polymorphism 500 C/G correlated with Ala148Thr; (iii) no correlation was observed between the 500 C/G polymorphism and age of diagnosis, localization of primary melanoma and survival time; (iv) we did not find correlation between 500 C/G and type of cancer in the family; (v) changes in the CDKN2a gene were not found in patients with second cancer.
