Opis:
The freshwater dinoflagellate represent microfossils which are very rarely noted in lake deposits. In Late Holocene sediments of the Lake Młynek, the Iława Lakeland, northern Poland, we identified intense blooms of algae of the genus Palatinus. They occurred primarily in the period of strong human impact during expansion of the Monastic State of the Teutonic Order. The most amazing thing is that samples in which conventional palynological maceration has been used dinoflagellate are represented by armored vegetative forms instead of cysts. During this laboratory processes, especially acetolysis, cellulosic thecae of armored forms should be destructed. This is the second known example of acetolysis resistant thecae of modern dinoflagellate, built by substance other than cellulose. Palatinus blooms were associated probably with the hydrotechnical works made by Teutonic Knights in the catchment, which caused supply and discharge of micronutrients e.g. selenium in the basin.

Multicultural prehistoric settlement

geology and geomorphology of Roztocze
Opis:
The paper presents determinants of location of the multicultural complex of archaeological sites in the vicinity of Ulów, in the Central Roztocze upland region in south-eastern Poland. Archaeological research revealed that in the area assumed to be devoid of settlements, the settlements of prehistoric and historical communities functioned from the Palaeolithic to modern times. The region was also subjected to environmental examination. Location of sites was analysed, taking into account a convenience of communication in a regional scale and local environmental conditions. Analysis of hydrogeological, geomorphological and soil conditions was carried out, taking into account water supply, communication and the farming development. In-depth analysis included micromorphological DTM (Digital Terrain Model) and geological and soil probing. The area was found to be located on the crossing of prehistoric communication routes the course of which depended on the variability of the physiographic parameters of regions. The functioning of new cultures in the same place resulted from specific local conditions such as: easily arable soils, favourable microclimate, and particularly access to water. The presence of a source of water in a plateau area is determined tectonically (strike-slip fault), lithologically (impermeable marl horizon), and geomorphologically (dissection of the aquifer by an erosion-denudation valley).

Opis:
A sediment core, 350 cm long recovered from Młynek Lake, northern of Poland (Warmia and Masuria Region) was analyzed with respect to their content of diatoms and chrysophyte cysts. The aim was to reconstruct the lake water level and climatic changes during the past 2500 years. The recognized diatom assemblages displayed marked floristic changes along the sediment core samples. The main change in diatom composition consists of a shift from an assemblage dominated by benthic Fragilaria sensu lato species through marked intervals to a planktonic one in distinct zones. A high proportion of benthic to plankton taxa has been reported as indicative for a lowering of the lake level with long ice cover in a cold dry climate and a shift from benthic to planktonic diatom taxa reflects arising water level with longest growing season and reduced ice cover on the lake during a warm wet climate. Multivariate statistical analysis included hierarchical ascending clustering distinguished four diatom ecological groups. The analyzed core section was divided into 11 diatom zones according to a distribution of ecological groups and variation in abundance of dominant species supported by 14C data. The results displayed a developmental history of the Młynek Lake that can be divided into 6 main phases of alternating warm wet and cold dry shifts. A distinct dominance of planktonic eutrophic indicator diatoms accompanied by a low abundance of chrysophyte cysts indicates increased lake trophicity and a general trend for the increasing anthropogenic impact.

Opis:
The article aimed at presenting of the design assumptions of the wall partition built anda results of computer simulation of thermal properties in a heterogeneous wall partition in THERM. Display of the isotherms' distribution, heat flux vectors and temperature distribution in the area of thermal bridges and beyond. The tested partition on the basis of which simulations were created, was equipped with elements imitating thermal bridges, used in construction, to show their influence on the thermal properties of building structures. Thermal bridges can take the form of linear and point bridges. The example described in the article concerns the problem of thermal bridges occurring in wall partitions. The simulation is a preliminary pilot action before the start of non-invasive tests, ie measurement and calculation of the heat transfer coefficient, thermovision measurements on the surface of the barrier.

Opis:
High-resolution diatom investigation from the Polish ecosystem is presented as a contribution to our knowledge of diatom floristics, ecology, biogeography, and their significance in environmental and climate reconstruction in Poland. The study is based on the analysis of 821 sediment samples taken from different lakes in northern Poland, besides 8 borehole-originated from the Eemian paleolakes sites in central Poland. The preceding diatom results in published papers included the diatom flora that were recorded from different habitats in Poland are mentioned in the present work to complete the Polish diatoms list. The current work is the first part in a series of monographs dealing with the diatom taxa belonging to classes Coscinodiscophyceae, Mediophyceae and subclass Fragilariophycidae. A total of 269 diatom species and varieties belonging to 38 genera are recognized. The checklist is comprising 86 entries of Coscinodiscophyceae that includes all radial centric diatoms and 183 taxa of Fragilariophyceae that includes araphid pennate diatoms. Of these 97 diatom taxa are represented as a new record for Poland and 12 new combinations and new varieties. A detailed diatom description, distribution in Poland, andautecological information are presented to round up the content of this volume and documented with 120 plates including 2423 excellent light micrographs of diatom taxa, which allows for a better understanding of morphology to aid in the identification. This work is proposed to contribute towards a general view of the high diatom biodiversity that characterizes Polish ecosystems and provides a revised diatom checklist from Poland. Additionally, it offers the first taxonomic and autecological catalog, which will be significant in the assessment of the water quality monitoring, paleoenvironmental interpretation, and construct the paleoclimate changes.
