Opis:
The notions of nil, nilpotent or PI-rings (= rings satisfying a polynomial identity) play an important role in ring theory (see e.g. [8], [11], [20]). Banach algebras with these properties have been studied considerably less and the existing results are scattered in the literature. The only exception is the work of Krupnik [13], where the Gelfand theory of Banach PI-algebras is presented. However, even this work has not get so much attention as it deserves.
The present paper is an attempt to give a survey of results concerning Banach nil, nilpotent and PI-algebras.
The author would like to thank to J. Zemánek for essential completion of the bibliography.

A semiring S is said to be a quasi completely regular semiring if for any a ∈ S there exists a positive integer n such that na is completely regular. The present paper is devoted to the study of completely Archimedean semirings. We show that a semiring S is a completely Archimedean semiring if and only if it is a nil-extension of a completely simple semiring. This result extends the crucial structure theorem of completely Archimedean semigroup.

We show that the objects of Bass-Farrell categories which represent 0 in the corresponding Nil groups are precisely those which are stably triangular. This extends to Waldhausen's Nil group of the amalgamated free product with index 2 factors. Applications include a description of Cappell's special UNil group and reformulations of those splitting and fibering theorems which use the Nil groups.

Opis:
Flowering of plants is controlled by hormones among which both stimulators and inhibitors are present. The role of abscisic acid (ABA) in flower induction of the short day plant Pharbitis nil was shown in our experiments through exogenous applications and endogenous level determination of the hormone in cotyledons of seedlings grown under special light conditions. The application of ABA to cotyledons or shoot apices during the first half of a 24-h long inductive night inhibits flowering. The same compound applied towards the end of or after a 14-h long subinductive night increases the number of flower buds produced by these plants. Exposing P. nil seedlings at the beginning of a 24-h long inductive night to far red light (FR) decreases the level of endogenous abscisic acid in cotyledons and leads to flower inhibition. However, a pulse of red light (R) reversing the inhibitory effect of far red light on the flowering of P. nil increases the ABA content. The results obtained confirm previous observations that ABA may play a dual and an important role in the regulation of floral bud formation in P. nil. The flowering occurs when the level of endogenous abscisic acid is low at the beginning and is high toward the end of the inductive night.

Opis:
Let $Γ = Γ_1 *_G Γ_2$ be the pushout of two groups $Γ_i$, i = 1,2, over a common subgroup G, and H be the double mapping cylinder of the corresponding diagram of classifying spaces $BΓ_1 ← BG ← BΓ_2$. Denote by ξ the diagram $I {p \over ←} H {1 \over →} X = H$, where p is the natural map onto the unit interval. We show that the $Nil^∼$ groups which occur in Waldhausen's description of $K_*(ℤΓ)$ coincide with the continuously controlled groups $\widetildeK^{cc}_*(ξ)$, defined by Anderson and Munkholm. This also allows us to identify the continuously controlled groups $\widetildeK^{cc}_*(ξ^+)$ which are known to form a homology theory in the variable ξ, with the "homology part" in Waldhausen's description of $K_{*-1}(ℤ Γ)$. A similar result is also obtained for HNN extensions.

Opis:
High-temperature plastic properties of heat-resistant stainless steel X15CrNiSi20-12 were assessed on the basis of hot tensile tests and nil strength tests. The results were supported by metallographic analyses using SEM and EDX analysis. The formability of the investigated steel can be divided into roughly three temperature areas. In the temperature range of 900°C to about 1050°C, formability was negatively affected by precipitation of carbide particles at grain boundaries. As the temperature rose to 1200°C, these particles dissolved, resulting in an increase in formability. Further temperature increases resulted in a relatively steep drop in formability caused by overheating of the material. The nil ductility temperature of 1280°C and the nil-strength temperature of 1362°C were determined. The Plastic and strength properties of the investigated material were compared with the deformation behavior of the reference steel X5CrNi18-10, which shows a significantly wider range of suitable forming temperatures.

Allene oxide synthase (AOS) encodes the first enzyme in the lipoxygenase pathway, which is responsible for jasmonic acid (JA) formation. In this study we report the molecular cloning and characterization of InAOS from Ipomoea nil. The full-length gene is composed of 1662 bp and encodes for 519 amino acids. The predicted InAOS contains PLN02648 motif, which is evolutionarily conserved and characteristic for functional enzymatic proteins. We have shown that wounding led to a strong stimulation of the examined gene activity in cotyledons and an increase in JA level, which suggest that this compound may be a modulator of stress responses in I. nil.

The aim of this study was to obtain information on pre-service teachers’ experiences and viewpoints on science journals and journal writing. The current study utilized a qualitative research method, namely phenomenography. The data were collected by conducting face to face semi-structured interviews. The analysis of the verbatim transcripts of pre-service teachers’ interviews was performed with the use of the phenomenographic method. The findings are presented as themes, subthemes and categories. The participants in the study commented on the content of science journals, usefulness of journal writing in science courses and using science journals in primary education based on their observations during the practical activities at schools.

Opis:
Interactions among jasmonates and auxin in the photoperiodic flower induction of a short-day plant Ipomoea nil were examined. Therefore, we measured changes in jasmonic acid (JA) and jasmonic acid methyl ester (JAMe) levels in the cotyledons of I. nil during the inductive night, as well as the effects of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) on their content. We noticed an interesting result, that IAA applied on the cotyledons of I. nil is an effective stimulator of JAMe production in seedlings cultivated under inductive night conditions. IAA treatment also significantly increased the transcriptional activity of InJMT (JASMONIC ACID CARBOXYL METHYLTRANSFERASE), while did not affect the expression of JA biosynthesis genes (lipoxyganease, allene oxide synthase, 12-oxophytodienoate reductase). These data, as well as the results of our previous research, suggest that exogenous IAA participates in I. nil flower induction process by stimulating InJMT expression and, as a consequence of that, enhancing the level of JAMe, a flowering inhibitor.
