Opis:
This text was inspired by the work of Alice Salomon, a German social scientist active in first decades of the 20th century. It discusses the auxiliary and later creative role of women in sociology globally, from the mid-20th century until now. It is focused on the input of women to social theory. In the last part, the article discusses the role of women in Polish social sciences, but particularly the lack of systematic research on this issue.

This text has three parts. In the first, I discuss the presence and absence of the concept of “social relations” in social sciences and focus on “ethnic relations.” Then, I analyse theways inwhich the theoretical problems of ethnic relations are conceptualized in sociology. Finally, I offer my own suggestions. Why is it worth dealing with concepts of interactions and social relations at all, especially with respect to macrosocial phenomena (such as “ethnic issues”)? First, it seems to me that these are some of sociology’s most basic concepts. Second, the relational and interactionist current in contemporary sociology offers some important inspirations relating to the analysis of macrocultural phenomena. I suggest to follow Randall Collins’ ideas and seek the “microfoundations” of macrosocial phenomena in the chains of interaction rituals present at the foundation of society as such. I intend to avoid such a sociological approach to ethnicity which calls all ethnic phenomena “ethnic relations” but in fact deals mainly with individual groups, types of structured ethnic order or attitudes. Actually, ethnic order rests on the interactionist understanding of the social relations between ethnic actors. It is these relations which dynamize social order.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to present some ramifications of the democratization processes in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) since 1989. The analysis concentrates on relations between the new dominant groups and cultural (mostly national and religious) minorities. The author outlines the concepts of democracy under conditions of cultural pluralism. He concentrates on similarities and differences between three levels of relations between the dominant groups and minorities: “institutional,” “semi-institutional,” and “non-institutional.” CEE is not homogenous neither among the countries nor among these spheres. Moreover, relations between dominant groups and minorities do not seem to be much more complicated than in some (actually many)Western countries. However, it seems to be easier in CEE to express oneself on political and cultural maters without fear of governmental reprisal than without fear of societal reprisal.

METHODOLOGY
Opis:
The aim of this paper is to discuss the most important methodological issues related to the study of ‘academic migration’, which we have encountered while preparing a research project on foreign-born academics in Poland. These issues are presented in the context of the migration of other highly skilled workers. Many of the analysed articles which concern migration of the highly skilled fall into methodological traps. Some do not take into account important cultural variables; others are concentrated on very specific problems, and – by employing sophisticated statistical techniques – provide conclusions of very limited generality. We start our analysis with the discussion of the most common research problems. Then we move on to discussing sources of data and methodologies. The last part summarizes the main advantages and disadvantages of various methodological approaches often employed in academic migration studies. This study allows us to outline our above-mentioned research proposal. Drawing on this example we show how a qualitative research project may add to current knowledge concerning the group in question. Nevertheless, this subject is diffi cult per se, and some challenges seem impossible to overcome.

Starting in the second half of the 2000s, we experience not one (financial, economic) crisis, but the crises in plural, the multifaceted crisis situation in Europe. The previous, Geneva 2011, ESA Conference took up a very timely and significant, at that time, scholarly and societal, topic of “turbulent times,” in which we had lived for several years. The Turin 2013 Conference was organized is a slightly different situation.Global, including European, crises entered a new stage, but at the same time it seemed that there was a light in the tunnel. Old themes, like neo-liberal politics, economy and ideology, as well as the lost welfare state were very important for the scholars. Critical approach became a standard way of analysis of politics, economy and society, but also of political sciences, economics and sociology. Criticism was not only “negative.” For many speakers and discussants, the recent crises have been a chance to re-evaluate the former institutional arrangements and outline new, more flexible solutions.

The aim of this article is to present some aspects (both individual and collective) of the present and future situation of the elderly in the Western world, with particular stress on Poland. The authors examine a few contexts of aging as a stage of human life. Some aspects of the processes discussed here are relatively common whereas others have only gained importance in recent decades. This paper is composed of two parts. The first one, using socio-cultural anthropological, as well as historical data, describes various significant contexts of the present and approaching processes, focusing on the continued and changing perceptions of old age. The second part, based on the quantitative data delivered by statistical services and pooling centres, shows the most likely positions of various groups of the elderly in the Polish society in the perspective within the coming 25 years.

This article discusses the professional careers of foreign scholars in Krakow, one of the leading academic centres in Poland and a regional ‘silicon valley’ (toutes proportions gardées). Central and Eastern Europe is understudied as an immigration region for highly skilled migrants (HSMs). To bridge this gap, we concentrate on three interrelated topics: (a) the perception of Polish science and its infrastructure; (b) careers of international staff employed in Polish academia; and (c) their perception of their achievements in Poland. Foreign scholars come to Poland for various reasons. Two of the most important are the cultural proximity between Poland and their country of origin, and research interests focused directly in Poland. Our findings show that Poland attracts first and foremost scholars with average scientific achievements. We discuss major problems they encounter (e.g., shortage of funds, uncomfortable office space, restricted access to books and papers) and their expectations of life in a semi-periphery country. The paper is mainly based on in-depth interviews with 23 foreign scholars working full time at four universities in Krakow and, as a secondary source, on the analysis of websites of these universities.

ACADEMIC MOBILITY

IMMIGRATION TO POLAND
Opis:
Academic international mobility is a long-lasting phenomenon and important aim of public policies in numerous countries. Scholarly debate usually concentrates on Western countries and some Eastern Asian scientific hubs like Singapore. Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) is understudied. In Poland, the largest CEE country, unlike in many Western countries, public policies concerning internationalization of the academic field are still under construction. Nevertheless, there is a strong pressure for internationalization. The Polish case to be discussed in this article can serve as an example of academic migration to less economically privileged regions that are usually countries of emigration of scholars rather than immigration. In this paper, by means of qualitative in-depth interviews, we concentrate on the need to invite academics from abroad and the perceptions of the actual presence of foreign scholars, employed full-time, as seen by their Polish supervisors. Geographical focus of this paper (CEE) and adopted perspective (interviews with heads of departments supported by interviews with academics) bridge the gap in the literature on academic mobility.

This is an empirical quantitative analysis of the official data coming from the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education. The foreign scholars in Poland at the beginning of the 21st century are presented in the context of the global “brain circulation” or migration of highly qualified specialists. The second context is the present Polish academic system. In this paper we discuss characteristics of the analysed data base, universities and colleges where the foreign scholars are usually employed, the academic disciplines they represent, the relations between the number of foreign scholars and the institutional prestige of schools employing them, and conclusions on what we can and cannot learn from the data set analysed here.

Aim: The aim of the study is an attempt to answer the question whether a long-term karate practice exerts influence on the incidence of injuries and what its type and underlying cause. Methods: The research was carried out in July 2013 in Cracow during a karate training camp. 125 people from Poland participated in the study. The participation in research was voluntary and people were informed about its aim and application. The average age was 37,6 ± 11,3 years. The youngest participant was 15 and the oldest 57. Median age was 39 which means that half of participants was not older than 39 and the other half was at least 39. Questionnaire techniques were used in the study. The research tool used to implement the selected technique was survey questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of 23 open- and close-ended questions. Results: As results from own research, the greatest number of competitors (38) have suffered from contusion (47,1% of all injury types). This injury types constitutes almost half of all injuries. Among all injury types karate contestants suffered from last year, the most common were contusions (25,6% of all injuries). Conclusions: Karate training is not related to any serious injuries apart from contusions which at the same time are most common injury in this type of training. Contestants’ and training experience are not directly related to injury incidence. An appropriately organized, rational training and using prevention enables to avoid injuries. Circumstances of injury incidence change with contestants’ age and training experience.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to present clinical picture, indications for surgery, immediate and remote results of surgical treatment for lateral and median cysts of the neck. Material and methods. A total of 17247 patients were operated between 1 January 1990 and 31 December 2011 for neck tumors. Results. Neck cysts were diagnosed in 34 (0.2%) patients, including lateral in 12 (35.3%) and median in 22 (64.7%). Lateral cyst once descended to the mediastinal. Nodular goitres were diagnosed in 17 (50%) of them - with the lateral cysts 4x and median cysts 13x. Guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the cyst-like lesions revealed the presence of protein masses in all patients. The lesions were found to have inflammatory character in 6 patients (17.6%) regarding median cysts (5x) or lateral cyst (1x). Out of them, 3 patients developed purulent inflammatory process. All patients were operated. The operation consisted of radical resection of the cyst only or plus partial resection of both thyroid lobes and total resection of pyramidal lobe if concomitant goitre was found. Two patients required one-stage resection of the enlarged lymph nodes in the neck. Suspected focus of thyroid papillary cancer was found by intra-operative examination in neck median cyst wall in one patient. However, paraffin tests did not confirm the suspicion. Another patient was found by histopathological examination to have active tuberculotic process within both lateral cyst and lymph nodes. The patient received intensive antituberculotic treatment postoperatively. Conclusions. 1. Median cysts of the neck are more often accompanied by thyroid tumor-like goitres than lateral cysts. 2. Radical resection of the cysts in operative treatment results in good long term patient condition and prevent in recurrence of the illness.
