Opis:
The aim of this study was to test the effectiveness of an econometric model with dichotomous (binary) explanatory variables in the approximation and prediction of different kinds of cyclicality (annual, monthly, weekly, and daily) of demand for telephone services. The analyses were conducted with the use of data provided by the selected telecommunication network operator. The data included hourly combined demand for specified telephone services (in seconds) of outgoing calls within the framework of the particular subscriber group (business or individual), the given day, the particular month, and the specific category of connection. All kinds of the cyclicality were confirmed in models with 70 explanatory variables (i.e. in models without holidays). The inclusion of the variables set denoting specific holidays improved goodness of the models fit to the data. The econometric modelling of cyclical components and the forecasting of it with the use of dichotomous variables was effective.

Opis:
Aim/purpose – The aim of this paper is to analyze and compare the development of voivodships in terms of social media usag e in enterprises in the period from 2014 to 2017. The aim has been formulated because of the increasingly greater significance of social media in post-industrial enterprises. Design/methodology/approach – The two types of linear ordering methods were ap- plied, i.e., the method based on the pattern of development (Hellwig’s method) and the methods that were non-based on the pattern of development were used. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient ρ and Kendall’s rank correlation coefficient τ were used to verify correlations between various rankings. Analysis of the dynamics, spatial visualizations, box plots and polar plots were used in relation to the aggregated measures. In conducted analyses, data from the period 2014-2017 (pr ovided by the Central Statistical Office of Poland) was used. The each year for the period from 2014 to 2017 was analyzed. Findings – In all rankings (with the use of all ty pes of applied measures and also in all analyzed years) the 1st place was taken by Masovian Voivodship. The distance between Masovian Voivodship and other voivodships was still significant during the analyzed period. The created rankings were similar in terms of statistical significance of computed correlation coefficients in all analyses. The research study results do not indicate a clear dispersion of the level of the analyzed phenomenon between eastern and western voivodships. It was also found that the highe r is ICT usage by enterprises in a voivod- ship, the more common is social media usage by them. There is a clear overall tendency of increase in the phenomenon dur ing the period from 2014 to 2017. Research implications/limitations – The main implications is that the identified differ- ences between areas can be a basis to assess the social media usage as a specific factor of business development. The research result s indicate voivodships that should employ social media more and the highest placed voivo dships as well. The results can be regard as support for the policy of digitization and building a knowledge-based economy. Originality/value/contribution – The originality of this pa per is based on: the created rankings of voivodships in terms of social media usage in enterprises in the period 2014- 2017, the comparison and assessment of voivodsh ips in this context, and the identifica- tion of change of the social media usage in individual voivodships and in Poland as a whole.

Opis:
Omówiono metody porządkowania liniowego (metodę Hellwiga i metody bezwzorcowe), aglomeracyjną hierarchiczną metodę analizy skupień (metodę Warda) i optymalizacyjną metodę analizy skupień (metodę k‑średnich). Empiryczna część pracy obejmuje przedstawienie wyników badań. Wykorzystano dane z roku 2017 dostarczone przez Główny Urząd Statystyczny. W ramach wykorzystania e‑usług przez gospodarstwa domowe (26 zmiennych) stworzono rankingi województw i zidentyfikowano skupienia województw. Posłużyły one do porównania i oceny województw w analizowanym roku.
The aim of this work is to assess the development of voivodships in terms of the usage of e‑services (e‑government, e‑commerce, e‑health, etc.) in households, in comparison with the research on the overall ICT usage in households, in voivodships. The results of both of these studies enabled the verification of the thesis that the higher the level of overall ICT usage in households, in a given voivodship, the higher the level of e‑services usage in these households. In the theoretical part of the work, the rationale for the research was presented. Therefore, the importance of the usage of e‑services in households, for building an information society and consequently knowledge‑based economy, has been described. The research methodology also included: linear ordering methods (Hellwig’s method, methods that are non‑based on the pattern of development), agglomerative hierarchical clustering method (Ward’s method), and optimisation clustering method (the k‑means method) have been discussed. The empirical part of the work involves presentation of the research results. Data from the year 2017, provided by the Central Statistical Office of Poland, was used. Within the framework of the usage of e‑services in households (26 variables), the rankings of voivodships were created and the clusters of voivodships were detected. The obtained rankings and clusters of voivodships served to compare and assess voivodships in the analysed year. In the light of the results relating to the usage of the e‑services, the results of ordering and clustering of voivodships within the framework of overall ICT usage in households (27 variables) were obtained. Then, the verification of the assumed thesis was conducted.

Opis:
This article provides a detailed review of the ethnosurvey, a research methodology that has been widely applied to the study of migration for almost four decades. We focus on the application of ethnosurvey methods in Mexico and Poland, drawing on studies done in the former country since the early 1980s and, in the latter, since the early 1990s (including several post-2004 examples). The second case is particularly relevant for our analysis as it refers to a number of novel migration forms that have been identified in Central and Eastern Europe in the post-1989 transition period. Drawing on these studies, we consider the advantages and disadvantages of the ethnosurvey as a research tool for studying international migration. Its advantages include its multilevel design, blend of qualitative and quantitative methods, reliance on retrospective life histories and multisited data collection strategy. These features yield a rich database that has enabled researchers to capture circular, irregular, short-term and sequential movements. Its disadvantages primarily stem from its hybrid sampling strategy, which necessarily places limits on estimation and generalisability and on the technical challenges of parallel sampling in communities of both origin and destination. Here we argue that the ethnosurvey was never proposed and should not be taken as a universal methodology applicable in all circumstances. Rather it represents a specialised tool which, when correctly applied under the right conditions, can be extremely useful in revealing the social and economic mechanisms that underlie human mobility, thus yielding a fuller understanding of international migration’s complex causes and diverse consequences in both sending and receiving societies.

Opis:
This special section opens a two-part collection of articles, to be published in two consecutive issues of CEEMR in 2019, looking at various aspects of migration from and into CEE that address the links between mobility and political and economic transition in the region. Its goal is to discuss, on the one hand, the contribution of the migration research conducted in CEE to the broader migration literature and, on the other, to demonstrate region-specific topics. An important inspiration for the preparation of this issue is the 25th anniversary of the Centre of Migration Research (CMR) at the University of Warsaw; this is accompanied by some reflections on how migration studies have developed in Poland and other CEE countries during these years of transition. Since the very beginning, the idea that guided research conducted in the CMR was to analyse migration in a broad socio-economic context and to develop cooperation with the best international teams of migration scholars. Therefore, for this special collection, we invited contributions which demonstrate the development of scientific collaboration between CMR researchers and outstanding European and non-European scholars, as well as articles by international researchers from all over Europe which focus on specific migration topics intersecting with post-communist transition in the CEE region.

In the past years, Poland has been not only a country of (mass) immigration but also a country where foreigners have begun to play a much larger role in the domestic labour market than ever before. This makes the analyses of foreigners’ integration increasingly important both to understand the situation of immigrants in Poland and their impact on the national economy and social processes. In this context, this article aims to quantify one of the dimensions of the economic integration of immigrants. We look at the level of earnings as one of the indicators of their integration process. Additionally, we refer to the impact of social capital (in the form of migrant networks) on the economic situation of immigrants. We focus on immigrants from Ukraine—the most numerous group of foreigners in Poland. Based on a unique data set, we empirically identify the key dimensions that have an impact on their incomes, including gender, employment sector and legal status. We also point to the statistically significant effects of migrant networks on migrants’ earnings.

The aim of this paper is to identify the main drivers of highly skilled migration between regions. We argue that the spatial mobility of individuals should not be considered in terms of one-off displacements, but rather as a sequence of migration decisions within a certain time period. The important context of the research is provided by the economic transformation of Poland, accompanied by the growing demand for education, and the lack of well-established patterns of graduate mobility. By applying multinomial logit modelling on a unique database of Polish graduates, we find that all the tested migration strategies can be explained in terms of structural factors, human capital characteristics or aspirations/capabilities related variables.

Opis:
The article presents the main recent developments in migration policy and migration trends to and from Poland. Polish migration policy has been becoming more open to immigrants in the years 2009-2011, especially immigrants needed by the Polish economy. At the same time, according to the new migration strategy, it is going to devote more attention to the issue of immigrants’ integration. As for trends in international migration, the trans-border mobility remained elevated and intensified, among others due to agreements on the Local Border Traffic with the Eastern neighbours. Since 2006 the emigration for a permanent stay has been decreasing and immigration for a permanent stay has been increasing, mostly due to return migration of Polish citizens, but still, in 2010 a negative net migration was registered. The number of long-term Polish emigrants stabilized, while the number of short-term emigrants declined abruptly, which suggests that Poland is already in a ‘late’ or ‘mature’ phase of post-accession emigration, characterized by stabilization of the outflow of settlement type and intensification of return migration. The latter is to some extent reflected by the statistics referring to immigration for a permanent stay and to mixed marriages. Labour immigration and foreign employment in Poland have been increasing constantly over recent years.

Opis:
Introduction: The laryngeal cancer is the most frequently diagnose malignancy in head and neck region. The highest morbidity is within male patients in the age range between 50 and 70 years. The multicenter study, coordinated by Oto-laryngology Department of Medical University of Warsaw, was designed to investigate the epidemiology of laryngeal cancer in Poland from 1980 and to analyze the evolution of diagnostic and therapeutical procedures over the years.Material and methods: There was performed retrospective analysis of the medical records of patients with laryn-geal cancer hospitalized and treated in 12 otolaryngology centers in Poland from 2001 to 2010. The Microsoft Access 2003 (SP 2) platform was used to collect the data and subsequent statistical analysis. Results: There were collected data from 4124 patients, 3682 men (89,3%) and 442 women (10,7%). The largest group consisted of patients in the age range between 50 and 60 years (41,5%) and the second large group was of those be-tween 60 and 70 years (29,6%). The history of heavy cigarettes smoking was obtained from 81,3% of patients. Re-garding the staging of laryngeal cancer, there were 1634 patients with cancer stage of I or II, including 5 patients with carcinoma in situ and 2490 patients with III or IV stage. The most frequent localization of the cancer was the glottis, followed with invasion of all three laryngeal levels and tumors occupying both the epiglottis and glottis. The major-ity of patients – 1367 (33%) – has the T3 tumor advancement. The lymph nodes metastases (N) were present in 1216 (29,5%) patients and among them the N2b and N2c advancement ( lymph node larger than 6 cm, multiple) was de-tected in 533 of patients (13%). The lymph nodes involvement occurred in majority within advanced tumors of T3 or T4a. Considering the treatment options they varied depending on the staging of laryngeal cancer. The sole surgical procedures were performed in 73,7% of patients with cancer stage of I or II and in only 28.6% of patients with the stage of III or IV. The advanced tumors were in majority treated with the combined therapy: surgery and radiotherapy. The overall survival in patients with cancer stage of I and II was 64% and 61% for those with stage III and IV.Conclusions: The rate of laryngeal cancer detection is quite high in Poland, however the period from the onset of symptoms until diagnosis should be reduced. The effectiveness of surgical treatment is definitely unsatisfactory. The project to create a multicenter permanent base for monitoring the course of diagnosis and treatment in patients with laryngeal cancer surely will verify the procedures and enable to achieve better results. Continuation of this project is a task for all otorhinolaryngologists.KEYWORDS:laryngeal carcinoma, epidemiology, clinical characteristics, multicenter study
