Opis:
The struggle against climate change and the increasing implementation of sustainability and environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards have contributed to the dynamic development of green finance. Green bonds have become one of the key tools of green finance. The aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive study related to the development and barriers of the green bonds market in Poland. A literature review, comparative analysis, and financial data were used in this research. The publication uses data from the Climate Bonds Initiative and includes global data on the development of the green bond market. The research was also enhanced by data from the Polish Ministry of Finance. Green bonds are an increasingly popular financing tool for renewable energy, zero-emission transport, or green buildings. The biggest advantages of green bonds are compliance with ESG standards, hedging of climate risk, and reputational benefits. Disadvantages include significant transaction costs, lack of uniform standardisation, or the risk of greenwashing – particularly when issuing sustainability-linked bonds. The development of green bonds in Poland faces barriers related to the lack of green projects. The development of municipal green bonds in Poland is clearly hampered by high transaction costs and the lack of clear economic benefits for issuers. Green bonds are not an instrument to finance all environmental investments, hence their implementation is limited; however, they are playing an increasingly important role in the transition towards sustainability.

The aim of the text is the presentation of the most important categories of exchange traded funds (ETFs) – physical and synthetic ones. A theoretical part of the text includes an overview of the main features of ETFs, the presentation of the differences between physical and synthetic funds and the main risks posed by both types to their users and the whole financial systems. An empirical part focuses on the European market. The time span of the analysis covers the years 2001-2015 (or shorter periods in cases of lack of sufficient data). Using key statistics regarding the European ETFs market, its size, structure (both historically and currently) as well as predictions of the main future changes are discussed. The main results of the research indicate that the size of the European ETFs market, both in terms of the assets under management and number of listed funds, has been growing in recent years, yet at a rate lower than before the global financial crisis. An important observed change on the European ETFs market is the declining share of synthetic ETFs after their peak popularity in 2010. The most recent data from the first months of 2015 confirm this trend. Considering the data on cash flows into these two categories, physical ETFs will most probably continue to increase their market share compared to synthetic ones

Opis:
Aim/purpose – The key aim of the paper is to examine the diffusion of the sustainable investing Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) on the European and US ETFs markets, with the special focus on the market shares of sustainable investing and conventional funds. Design/methodology/approach – The model of diffusion of innovation (logistic growth model) is applied. Monthly data on the assets of ETFs in the time period of 2006-2017 are used. Findings – Increasing assets of sustainable investing ETFs were identified in both examined regions. The average value of assets was higher in the United States, but the European market became larger in the late 2017. Exclusively for Europe, the diffusion of sustainable investing ETFs was confirmed for the entire analysed time period as the market share of this category was increasing in relation to the conventional funds. In the United States, the diffusion was short-lived and took place in the time period 2006-2008. Research implications/limitations – Applied diffusion models assume an S-shaped trajectory of the innovation’s diffusion and the estimations are sensitive to historical data. Originality/value/contribution – It is the first study to apply the methodological framework of innovation diffusion for the examination of the sustainable financial products. It addresses an issue of switching between sustainable investing and conventional financial products that has not been examined previously.

Opis:
Research background: Exchange traded funds (ETFs) are one of the most influential financial innovations, reshaping the investment funds market in many countries, including Mexico. Due to their similar investment objectives, ETFs are considered substitutes for mutual funds. Purpose of the article: The aim of the article is to provide an indepth insight into the issues associated with the development of financial markets in Mexico over the period 2002-2012, putting special emphasis on the development patterns of ETFs. Methods: First we use descriptive statistics to unveil basic changes and trends in the Mexican investment funds (ETFs and mutual funds). Then we use a category of the innovation diffusion models, i.e. logistic growth models, in order to explore the key development patterns. Data sources and methodological framework are presented in the second section of the article, with a detailed description of the innovation diffusion models applied in the research (based on 3-parametric logistic curve). The sum of assets under management of ETFs and mutual funds is considered as the size of the total investment funds market. Findings & Value added: Empirical findings indicate a significant development of the ETF market, both in terms of assets under management and market share. According to the presented estimations, Mexican ETF market development can be described with the logistic growth models, and three characteristic phases of the logistic curve were clearly observable. The predicted ETF market development patterns point towards a further increase of the market share of ETFs over the next 3-5 years, yet the probability of exceeding the level of ca. 20-30% seems low.

A benefit in and of itself is not what makes innovation so valuable. In order to make the company ‘more innovative,’ you might hear someone advise a certain course of action. Additionally, a company’s ability to innovate successfully can serve as a magnet for the best and brightest in the industry. They become steadfast employees who appreciate the opportunity to be part of the company’s innovation efforts. Managing innovation is a systematic strategy to implement changes that aim to improve a company’s products, processes, or overall position. There must be an increase in sales or customer satisfaction, a stronger working relationship between the company’s many divisions, or a better working environment for employees as a result of the changes. Financing innovation refers to the development of new financial products, services, or procedures. Throughout the years, innovations in financial instruments and payment methods have fuelled financial innovation. Bank performance depends on financial innovation because it has the potential to boost the industry’s efficiency and profitability. Banks utilise financial and organisational innovation to save money and improve the sector. Using a cash dispensing machine provides users with an ability to withdraw money whenever and wherever they want. With a single click, you can receive or pay cash via mobile banking. This is a great choice for people who do not feel comfortable going to typical bank offices. With negligible transaction costs, it is one of the most cost-effective ways to evaluate financial services.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to develop a framework for sustainable financial innovation, especially in banking intermediation. The author proceeds in two stages: first, tying the term of sustainable innovation to various paradigms of the role of banks in the economy in order to address that particular innovation clearly to a bank in a way that takes Responsible Research & Innovation (RRI) ideas into account. There has been no such approach to recognizing and interpreting financial innovation and sustainable financial innovation in banking intermediation in the existing theoretical achievements of banking. Secondly, examining the difference between sustainable innovation and incremental innovation. In the conclusion, the author presents the results of compiling three research perspectives (the role of banks, RRI, sustainable innovation versus incremental innovation) into an integrated approach to interpreting the term of sustainable financial innovation in banking intermediation.
Termin zrównoważona innowacja finansowa zostanie powiązany z różnymi paradygmatami roli banku w gospodarce, równocześnie uwzględniając postulaty „Odpowiedzialne badania i innowacje” (RRI). Następnie wykorzystana zostanie perspektywa różnicująca zrównoważoną innowację i innowację typu stopniowe ulepszenia (incremental innovation). Finalnie zostanie przedstawiony efekt kompilacji trzech perspektyw poznawczych (rola banku, RRI, zrównoważona innowacja versus innowacja typu stopniowe ulepszenia).

This study analyzes the behavior of the companies in the index of México’s Precios y Cotizaciones (IPC), with respect to measures of financial performance and its relationship with the two main approaches of innovation, according to the Bogota and Oslo manuals; assessing their impact on the stock price. The data is used on a quarterly basis from January 2000 to December 2011. It also makes reference to the impact of having the distinction “Socially Responsible Company” (Corporate Social Responsibility), in the Mexican stock market price reaction. Our main interest is to be pioneers in the search for relationships between topics that are currently treated as “alien” (CSR and Innovation) in formal academic publications, but we intuitively know that they are related inside organizations.

Opis:
The subject of the analysis is the relationship between the development of crowdfunding and the model and development of the financial system. The research goal is an attempt to answer the question: does the dynamic development of crowdfunding as a radical financial innovation result from the model of the financial system and its structure, or the level of its innovation and digitization, or do these factors not play a significant role. Literature analysis, statistical and descriptive analysis and ranking method were used as the research method. Based on the results, it should be stated that there is no clear division of financial systems into a market or bank-based model among Western European countries, while financial systems are increasingly divided into those innovative and traditional. The development of the financial market, combined with a high level of innovation and digitization of the economy, favours the development of financial innovation in the form of crowdfunding.

This paper investigates correlation between subsidies to invest in development projects, innovation, financial performance and sustainable growth. The focus of the study is on subsidies for co-financing purchases of new technological equipment aimed at promoting innovation and production of new products. Subsidies are distributed based on the prepared European Union (EU) and national programs for the purposes of faster economic growth in accordance with the policies and guidelines of the EU. The paper employs a combination of enterprises’ accounting data, data on subsidies and unique in-depth data obtained through a survey at the enterprise level. The results revealed a positive impact of subsidies on financial indicators, and only limited effect on innovation. While analyzing sustainable growth, we have established that the enterprises that received subsidies had a higher growth of financial indicators.

Opis:
This article is a theoretical and conceptual exploration into the study of the dynamics of financial innovations and their consequences in market economies. Drawing upon the works of Schumpeter and Minsky in an institutionalist and evolutionary tradition, the article puts forward the monetary and financial features of the 21st century economies and the recurrent systemic financial instabilities generated within the context of the financialization process. It then calls for alternative regulatory reforms capable of leading to sustainable economic development. The originality of the analysis lies in the fact that the micro-dynamics of innovations may result in both creative and destructive outcomes since there are some crucial differences between entrepreneurial innovations à la Schumpeter as the positive force in economic development, and financial innovations à la Minsky as the source of instabilities. The article then focuses on the weaknesses and inconsistencies of loosely regulated financial markets and suggests a few principles for rele-vant financial regulation in an endogenously unstable economy. The main contribution of the article is that financial stability must be regarded as a public good to be provided by an economy-wide regulatory framework under the supervision of a visible public hand. The study of the conditions of financial stability proves to be a matter of a specific social dilemma—opposition between private and public interests—that concerns the organisation and management of financial markets at the macroeconomic level. Such a dilemma leads to the ultimate regulatory issue of spurring the innovation dynamics of financial markets while ensuring systemic stability and sustainability through an appropriate regulatory and supervisory environment.

Opis:
This article is a contribution to the discussion on innovation activity and its influence on financial performance of companies. The authors employ a simple measure of innovativeness, which was also used in other studies, and the division of companies into two groups (innovative and non-innovative) was based on the fact whether they obtained a patent (patents) or not. In this paper, we compare the rates of return and revenue growth achieved by innovative versus non-innovative companies operating in the manufacturing industry in Poland, in the years 2006 to 2012. Financial and qualitative data for testing the hypotheses were taken from the Amadeus database provided by Bureau van Dijk. The sample consisted of 4004 enterprises, of which 681 were owners of at least one patent. T-Student test, ANOVA and OSL models were used to verify the working assumptions. The study tests the following three research hypotheses. H1: “Innovative companies achieve higher rates of return than the non- innovative ones.” That hypothesis was confirmed in relation to the EBITDA margin and ROS (return on sale), but not to ROA (return on assets) and ROE (return on equity). The fact of belonging to a group of innovative companies had an impact on an average EBITDA margin increase by 0.83 p.p. in 2007, 0.78 p.p. in 2009 and 0.73 p.p. in 2012, ceteris paribus. The difference between ROE was found statistically insignificant in most analysed periods (except 2007 and 2009), however, non-innovative companies have achieved a higher return on equity than innovative companies. It can be associated with higher operational risk in innovative companies which restrict access to external capital, leading such companies to expand their businesses through their own equity. The second tested hypothesis is: “An innovative activity has higher impact on financial performance in medium-sized companies than in large and very large ones.” During the research, it was found out that having obtained a patent is important determinant of EBITDA margin for medium-sized companies, increasing it by 0.76 p.p., ceteris paribus. In large companies, it contributed to an increase of 0.71 p.p., and for very large ones – by only 0.19 p.p., with the slope for the latter group at a number other than zero found to be statistically insignificant. In relation to third tested hypothesis:” Innovative companies are more sensitive in terms of revenue dynamics to economic slowdown than the non-innovative ones.” it was found out that in the period of time from 2006 to 2012 the dynamics of revenue growth in innovative companies was generally higher than in the non-innovative ones, except in the year 2009, when all companies showed a significant decline in revenues, but for innovative companies, the decline amounted to 6.39%, and for the remaining ones it was found at 4.98%. Based on those findings it was confirmed that innovative companies are characterized by a greater sensitivity to economic slowdown.
