Michèle Le Doeuffs "Primal Scene": Prohibition and Confidence in the Education of a Woman

Opis:
My essay begins with Michèle Le Doeuff's singular account of the "primal scene" in her own education as a woman, illustrating a universally significant point about the way(s) in which education can differ for men and women: gender difference both shapes and is shaped by the imaginary of a culture as manifest in how texts matter for Le Doeuff. Her primal scene is the first moment she remembers when, while aspiring to think for herself, a prohibition is placed in her reading of literature. Her philosophyteacher-at a boys' school-told the young Michèle that Kant's Critique of Pure Reason was "too difficult" for her to read. In recalling this scene, the older (and wiser) Michèle-now, a woman philosopher-directs her readers to this text by Kant, in order to demonstrate how knowledge has been constrained by the narrative and imagery in the text of a philosopher; similarly, in the texts of others. She finds the central imagery of Kant's text for setting the limits to human knowledge in his account of "the island of understanding," or "land of truth," surrounded by "a stormy sea" of uncertainty; the latter image also retains a seductive appeal, threatening to destroy the confidence of any knower who ventures out beyond the well-marked out island. Moreover, women have (too) often been associated with the dangers at sea beyond the safety of the island, where falsehood and worse reign. I propose that "text matters" here not only for gender issues, but for the postcolonial theory which Le Doeuff's reading of island imagery enhances in western literature and culture. The suggestion is that women in the history of ideas have been more susceptible than men to prohibitions (to reading texts): women's negative education is against going beyond certain boundaries which have been fixed by a generally colonialist culture on the grounds of gender-hierarchies. I stress the significance of confidence in the production of knowledge. A lack or an inhibition of confidence in one's own ability to think critically risks the damaging exclusions of, for example, colonialism and sexism. My aim is to unearth the political biases evident in textual imagery, while also pointing to new epistemic locations, with island-and-sea imagery that transgresses patriarchal prohibition, liberating subjects for confident reading and writing of texts today.

Opis:
Background. After several years of experience with guiding of an original program on health-promoting nutritional education for women during menopause, which by inducing changes in nutritional behaviour resulted in many favorable health promoting effects, on request of the students of the Association of Third Age University, an original educational program “Comprehensive stimulation of senior citizens to activity” was developed out and implemented. Objective. The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of four-month nutritional education and adjustments in diets of women aged 60-85, on the basis of the measurements of the selected lipid parameters in their blood tests. Material and methods. This research project was joined by 37 female subjects aged 60-85, who are the members of the University of the Third Age in Szczecin, and whose average BMI was 31.7 kg/m2. Before the nutritional education commenced and after it was completed, the female subjects’ nutritional status was assessed (BMI, WC, WHR, WHtR) and the energy and nutritional value of their diets was examined based on the subjects’ regular journalkeeping. Keys’ atherogenic score in their diets were also computed. Results. The applied nutritional education led to changes in the energy and nutritional value of the female subjects’ diets, which specifically improved their anthropometric parameters and the resulting BMI, WC and WHtR parameters. This fact was also reflected in a substantial decrease of the glucose level and a substantial increase of HDL-C level in the blood of the examined female subjects, as well as in the improvements in the assessed parameters TC/HDL-C, LDL-C/ HDL-C, TG/HDL-C. Conclusions. The analysis of the results allows to confirm, that the four-month nutritional education of elderly women resulted in changes of their erroneous dietary habits and an improvement in their nutrition.
Wprowadzenie. Materiał i metody. W badaniach udział wzięło 37 kobiet słuchaczek szczecińskiego Stowarzyszenia Uniwersytetu Trzeciego Wieku, w wieku 60-85 lat, o średniej wartości BMI 31,7 kg/m2. Przed rozpoczęciem i po zakończeniu szkolenia dokonano oceny stanu odżywienia kobiet (BMI, WC, WHR, WHtR) oraz oceny wartości energetycznej i odżywczej jadłospisów uzyskanych metodą bieżącego notowania. Obliczono również wskaźnik aterogenności diety Keys’a. Na podstawie wyników stężenia glukozy oraz parametrów gospodarki lipidowej (TG, TC, LDL-C, HDL-C) w surowicy krwi badanych kobiet wyliczono i zinterpretowano wybrane wskaźniki lipidowe (TC/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C, TG/HDL-C oraz HDL-C/TC). Wyniki. Znalazło też odzwierciedlenie w istotnym spadku stężenia glukozy i istotnym wzroście stężenia frakcji HDL-C w krwi badanych kobiet oraz w korzystnych zmianach wartości wyliczonych wskaźników TC/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C, TG/HDL-C. Wnioski.

The motif of improvement of human work in the Polish literature in the 20th century. Education versus literature

Opis:
The article considers the thread of work in the Polish literature in the 1930s and 1950s.These two periods were divided by World War II. In Poland, this war lasted from 1939 to 1945.Also in the history of Polish literature, two different periods can be distinguished - before and after World War II. The motive of improvement of work was evident in the pre-war Polish literature, intended for readers from the countryside and for the intelligentsia involved in improving rural life. An impulse for the appearance of a work thread in literature was the study of sociologists regarding life in the countryside. Books describing the life of peasant families were published. The division of work between wife and husband was described. The analysis of the wife's working day and the schedule of works with hours were evidence of the hard life of a rural woman. The authors of the books not only described reality. They postulated greater concern for the health of rural women and demanded a different organization of work in rural households. Support for ideas contained in the literature was sought in education and in extramural vocational schools for girls and boys. However, curricula in vocational schools were not as sensitive to social issues as literature and the dreams of sociologists. The motif of improving work was different after 1945.Post-war literature was dependent on great politics, it was part of the propaganda of communism. Nowadays, literature has been created for workers working in factories and on construction sites. The most vocal thread of improving work was the idea of heroes of work, i.e. shock workers, which was created in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Soviet Communists called on all workers in other communist countries to work more efficiently. One of the books describes an experiment based on the analysis of work of two Soviet workers. It was calculated that one of the women worked a few seconds faster than the other. Soviet books were translated into Polish. Polish writers were also inspired by Soviet books. In Poland, as in other countries in the East of Europe, the work race was disseminated in many books written to order of communists. Information about shock workers reached the public through radio, press and propaganda books. The heroes described in the literature were artificial, they had little in common with real people. They were happy because of hard work, they had no problems and no existential doubts. The Communists wanted vocational schools to help in promoting the work race. However, the school programme was more resistant to propaganda than literature.

This article describes the history of women in the engineering world, the changing social and economic conditions and women’s rising educational aspirations (it appears that they are interested in the traditional scientific disciplines but they also increasingly with to try typically male – form the point of view of traditional socialization – educational and then professional careers). The article presents the dynamics of the access of women to higher education through the years, including especially scientific and technical fields of study. It also presents the statistical data about the participation of women in the stereotypically male areas of education. This article provides historical examples of women, famousbecause of their spectacular scientific achievements.

Opis:
While 18th-century almanacs transmitted usable information that was meant to be relevant to daily life, at the beginning of the century they also began to function as an educational tool that enabled readers to act as producers of media content, and, as a result, to develop media literacy via the practice of writing and responding to amateur poetry. In this article, I define media literacy as a cultural category shaped by specific media-related skills: the creation, interpretation, evaluation, and negotiation of media content. I examine John Tipper’s The Ladies’ Diary (1704–1713), one of the best-selling almanacs of the era, as an educational tool that, through the strategy of inviting and publishing amateur poetry, promoted and taught media competencies. Tipper’s almanac, I argue, should thus be acknowledged as an influential document in the history of media education.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to examine the relationship between the BMI of women living in rural areas and their dietary habits, taking into consideration the regularity and frequency of consumption as well as preferences in various groups of foodstuffs. The study included 60 women aged 23 – 69, living in one county. The women were divided into two groups according to nutritional status (BMI): group I with normal body weight and group II with overweight and obesity. Dietary habits were evaluated by using the anonymous and voluntary questionnaire. The questionnaire contained questions concerning dietary preferences. The results were statistically analyzed. The study indicated that a vast majority of overweight and obese women in rural areas prefer fried dishes, red meat and animal fats. However, they do not consume vegetables and fruit frequently enough. Such dietary habits will only increase problems with obesity in rural communities. Thus it is important to start nutrition education as a significant strategy for non-pharmacological treatment of obesity and its health effects.
Do oceny zwyczajowego sposobu żywienia zastosowano metodę anonimowej i dobrowolnej ankiety, dotyczącą głównie preferencji żywieniowych.
