This paper presents the classic approach to minimum drag shape body problem, moving at hypersonic speeds, leading to famous power law shapes with value of the exponent of 3 4. Twoand three-dimensional cases are considered. Furthermore, an exact pseudo solution is given and its uselessness is discussed. Two new solutions are introduced, namely an approximate solution due to form of the functional and solution by means of optimisation of a Bézier curve. The former transforms the variational problem to the classic problem of function optimisation by assuming certain class of functions, whereas the latter by means of discretised functional.

The article presents the analysis of two speeches given by Rory O’Neill, also known as Panti Bliss, who is so far the most recognisable Irish drag queen. Apart from being a drag queen, Rory O’Neill is also a political activist whose performances were part of the campaign before the referendum concerning the 34th Amendment to the Constitution of Ireland. In the analysis both these aspects of the speaker’s identity are taken into consideration. Although the analysis is mostly linguistic, it also considers extralinguistic aspects of communication, e.g. the performer’s appearance on stage, as contextual elements are essential in sociolinguistic contexts. Thus, the analysis draws from the theoretical background focused on political discourse and the language used by drag queens to a detailed account of the two speeches in order discuss them in relation to the standards of both a drag performance and a political speech.

The work presents an experimental designation of the aerodynamic drag coefficient for two configurations of the Ahmed body model, with slant angle of 25° and with the inactive synthetic jet generator. When analyzing the aerodynamic drag of vehicles, most authors focus on higher Reynolds numbers, describing lower values only by designated trend lines. Which is why the main contribution of this experimental work was to designate the Ahmed’s body drag coefficient for low Reynolds numbers and to verify the obtained results with other authors experiments especially with the trend lines for Reynolds number in the range 0,35x105 – 1,8x105. For data taken from the literature, it can be seen that the value of the drag coefficient for the Ahmed body model decreases when the Reynolds number increases. The results obtained during the experiment show the opposite tendency.

The shape and drag of bodies with small stiffness may change during the airflow. This problem refers to such bodies as flags, bands, banners, flapping sails as well as blades and cables which vibrate due to the flow. Laboratory tests carried out to point out the aerodynamic drag coefficient of a flag are discussed in this article. The laboratory tests were carried out in an aerodynamic tunnel at different airflow velocities for flags with different dimensions made of fabrics of different roughness and stiffness. The drag coefficient value decreases with the increasing airflow velocity. The drag coefficient is higher for materials with higher roughness. The drag coefficient value is also influenced by the fabric stiffness and kind of edge. Great engineering importance to the stability of a structure (e.g. a flag mast) and the safety of nearby persons and buildings are attached to the analyzed problem.

This paper presents an analysis of aerodynamic characteristics of the rocket target for the final training of shooting at aerial targets by the „Stinger” system service staff. The governing equations of fluid dynamics are presented and the computational model of airflow around the rocket is developed. ANSYS CFX computational fluid dynamics software is used to compute airflow velocities, pressure, the drag force and the drag coefficient. A practical implementation of the research is presented. Taking into account the simulation results, the rocket-target was designed and manufactured.

The aerodynamics of powerboats used in inshore powerboat racing has a significant impact on their performance. The aerodynamic drag forces generated on individual elements of this type of boats were tested. The solid model of the boat developed in the CAD software was used for the calculations. The computational grid was generated, as well as the boundary conditions and the turbulence model, were determined. On the basis of such assumptions, the numerical calculations were carried out using the CFD method. The results from the numerical simulations consist of a description of the velocity and pressure distribution around the tested object and identification of the drag force on the components of the powerboat with a description of the relationship between them. Additionally, the variation of the drag force as a function of speed in the range from 0 to 60 m/s was presented. The tests were performed for 5 values of the angle of attack of the boat to the surface of water in the range from 0° to 12°. The scope of the research allowed for the development of a drag force map depending on the defined parameters. The test results can be used to optimize the shape of the boat structure in order to reduce the aerodynamic drag generated on its individual elements.

The paper discusses a numerical investigation, using a CFD tool, ANSYS FLUENT, of drag acting on a motorcycle helmet. The simulations were performed on a model of a helmet downloaded from a free CAD model library. A solid model enabled us to generate a mesh, to define boundary conditions and to specify a model of turbulence. Accordingly, the values of forces acting on individual sections of the helmet were obtained and the coefficients of aerodynamic drag were calculated. The test results can be used to optimize the shape of the existing motorcycle helmet construction and to study the impact of generated drag forces on reaction forces affecting a motorcyclist’s body.

In a recent authors’ paper, the general expression of Stokes drag experienced by a deformed sphere in both longitudinal and transverse flow situations was calculated in terms of the deformation parameter up to the second order. In this paper, Oseen’s correction to the axial Stokes drag on the deformed sphere is presented by using Brenner’s formula in general, first and then applied to prolate and oblate the deformed spheroid up to the second order of the deformation parameter. Numerical values of Oseen’s correction is obtained with respect to the deformation parameter and Reynolds number. The corresponding variations are depicted in figures. Some particular cases of a needle shaped body and flat circular disk are considered and found to be in good agreement with those existing in the literature. The import ant applications are also highlighted.

The article presents the assessment of the possibilities of applying GPS receiver for the measurement and acquisition of the longitudinal velocity of automobile in the investigations of longitudinal dynamics of automobile. For many years for the measurement of the longitudinal velocity Correvit-L sensors are applied. Major simplification of the measurement of the velocity with the GPS receiver, compared with correlational-optical sensors Correvit-L is giving the possibility to faster prepare the automobile for examinations. The more so as only recently GPS receivers with 10 Hz sampling rate are available. In the paper is shortly described the software specially designed for the measurements that makes it possible to simultaneously measure both the longitudinal velocity signal from GPS receiver and from Correvit-L sensor in real time. Furthermore, the application of the measurement of the velocity is presented on the basis of such road tests as the attempt of accelerating through the following gears, the attempt of free deceleration and the attempt of braking according to ECE 13 Regulation. On the basis of the mentioned manoeuvers the characteristics of the vehicle’s acceleration and dynamic coefficient, rolling and air drag coefficient and the braking deceleration were determined. The paper shows also some problems connected with applying GPS receiver to measure longitudinal velocity of the automobile.

Droplet combustion has been studied by experiments and numerical simulation for many years, and most of studies were done about single droplets. As for droplet groups, some theoretical and experimental studies were reported, but less of numerical studies. One of the important characteristics is the drag of combusting droplets, which is closely related to flame structure,and is a sub-model in numerical simulation of spray combustion. There are contradictory research results for the drag of combusting droplets. In the present paper, large-eddy simulation (LES) is used to study the flame structure and drag of a combusting ethanol-droplet group. The results show that there are three combustion modes: fully-enveloped flame, partially-enveloped flame and wake flame in a droplet group, leading to the change of the drag with inlet velocities. It is found that the drag of droplets in the group is much smaller than that of a non-combusting particle in isothermal flows.

Ensuring the safety of ship crews at sea is of the utmost importance. Life rafts are one of the basic components of any seagoing vessel and ensuring their stability is an important component of maritime research. This study concerns the determination of the aerodynamic drag coefficients of pneumatic life rafts in a full range of wind speed and directions. The drag coefficients are based on full-scale experimental studies and numerical calculations (computational fluid dynamics) carried out with Flow-3D software. Two types of life rafts are analysed in the numerical simulations, namely, a non-deformed raft and a raft deformed under the influence of wind pressure at a given flow velocity. The shape of the deformed pneumatic life raft is recreated on the basis of photographic documentation from experimental studies. The results of the numerical calculations are verified on the basis of full-scale flow experiments carried out at the Low Speed Wind Tunnel T-3 Laboratory at the Institute of Aviation in Warsaw. This study shows that there is a dependence of aerodynamic drag on the degree of deformation of the above-water part of the life raft, as well as the angle of the raft setting to the wind. In real water conditions, this angle depends mainly on the anchor point of the drift anchor and therefore should be considered at the design stage, which will directly reduce the wind leeway of the raft.

The present paper deals with the problem of an incompressible axisymmetric creeping flow caused by a porous spherical particle in a spherical cavity filled with micropolar fluid. Depending on the kind of cell model, appropriate boundary conditions are used on the surface of sphere and spherical cavity. Drag force on the porous particle in the presence of a cavity is calculated to determine the correction factor to the Stokes law. A general expression for the hydrodynamic force acting on the porous sphere and, hence, for the wall correction factor of the sphere are obtained. The special cases of the porous sphere in viscous fluid, zero permeability solid sphere in micropolar fluid and viscous fluid are obtained in open and closed cavity respectively.

The paper presents the numerical analysis of the drag force generated on the body of a sports car, based on the CFD method in the Ansys Fluent program. The three-dimensional model of the vehicle was taken from an open CAD database. Based on this, a computational grid was developed, boundary conditions and a turbulence model were defined. As a result of the calculations, the pressure distribution on the individual body parts and the velocity distribution in selected cross sections were obtained. In the next part of the research, the simulation results are used to optimize the shape of the bodywork of different passenger vehicles in order to reduce the generated drag force.

In the paper we are concerned with the problem of flow control. We consider two-dimentional (2D) turbulent wake flows past rotating obstacles where the control objective is to minimize the drag force. Results of numerical simulations are presented which indicate that substantial drag reduction can be obtained using an open-loop algorithm. This finding is compared with available experimental data. In the second part of the paper we derive a rigorous feedback method for optimal flow control.
W pracy badany jest problem sterowania przepływem. Rozważanyjest dwuwymiarowy turbulentny opływ obracającej się przeszkody. Celem sterowania jest minimalizacja siły oporu. Przedstawione wyniki stymulacji numerycznych dowodzą, że istotne efekty można uzyskać przy pomocy algorytmów "otwartych". Fakt ten potwierdzają również dostępne dane eksperymentalne. W drugiej części pracy sformułowany jest algorytm sprzężenia zwrotnego oparty o teorię sterowania optymalnego.
