Fall detection of the elderly is a major public health problem. The probability of falls makes them dependent on others and restricts their freedom of movement. Although many fall detection methods have been developed to recognize falls in a real-time, most are inaccurate and inconvenient to use. In this paper we describe two methods for detecting the fall of a human body that can be implemented for the smartphones with built-in accelerometer. The first one used the raw data obtained from the sensor, and the second one - filtered data. In addition to the measuring a load factor, an important role in the algorithms has also a mobile device orientation to the ground. The assumption for the study was the localization of the smartphone in a right pocket of trousers - common in right-handed people. The experiment consisted in simulation the falls from different initial postures (standing, sitting, kneeling) in four directions (front, back, left, right). The results are satisfactory for detection of falls from a standing position. In conclusion, correct detection of falls based on the accelerometer built into the smartphone is possible after the filtration of the raw data, although the location of this device, the initial body position and direction of the fall have significant impact.

Opis:
The article presents the results of research in controlling the mobile application with the EEG signals and eye blinking. Authors proposed a prototype solution of a brain-computer interface that can be used by people with total motor impairment to control chosen mobile application on their mobile phone. There was a NeuroSky MindWave Mobile device used during experiments. Two software tools for mobile devices were specially implemented. First one helps to analyse the EEG signals and recognize eye blinks, second one - interprets them and executes assigned actions. Different configurations of settings were used during the studies. They included: single blink or double blink, level of focus, period of focus. Experiments results show that a man equipped with a personal EEG sensor and eye blinking detector can remotely touchless use mobile applications installed on smartphones or tablets.

The aim of the study was a continuation of previously provided research on the tablets usability in the rehabilitation of old patients with cognitive disabilities after a brain stroke. First, the analysis of the pilot research results was provided. It gave a hope for possible rationalization of the rehabilitation process after proper improvement of the proposed mobile solution. Prototype examples of mobile rehabilitation applications were extended and integrated in the RehaMob - a single mobile solution. The mobile application includes six different types of tasks, which can be useful for stimulation and rehabilitation of language functions, short-term memory, etc. The RehaMob was made available again to the therapists in the rehabilitation center. Finally, the mobile application is used with good results in the therapy of patients with cognitive disabilities. The mobile solution is useful support for traditional rehabilitation process, but its influence to the rehabilitation progress is difficult to assess, because the RehaMob can be used only as additional tool.

A diversity of symptoms in autism dictates a broad definition of Autism Spectrum of Disorders (ASD). Each year, the percentage of children diagnosed with ASD is growing. One common diagnostic feature in individuals with ASD is the tendency to exhibit atypical simple cyclic movements.The motor brain activity seems to generate a periodic attractor state that is hard to escape. Despite numerous studies, scientists and clinicians do not know exactly if ASD is a result of a simple yet general mechanism or of a complex set of mechanisms (either on the neural, molecular and system levels). Simulations using the biologically - relevant neural network model presented here may help to reveal the simplest mechanisms that may be responsible for specific behavior. Abnormal neural fatigue mechanisms may be responsible for motor symptoms as well as many (or perhaps all) of the other symptoms observed in ASD.

Every year the prevalence of Autism Spectrum of Disorders (ASD) is rising. Is there a unifying mechanism of various ASD cases at the genetic, molecular, cellular or systems level? The hypothesis advanced in this paper is focused on neural dysfunctions that lead to problems with attention in autistic people. Simulations of attractor neural networks performing cognitive functions help to assess system long-term neurodynamics. The Fuzzy Symbolic Dynamics (FSD) technique is used for the visualization of attractors in the semantic layer of the neural model of reading. Large-scale simulations of brain structures characterized by a high order of complexity requires enormous computational power, especially if biologically motivated neuron models are used to investigate the influence of cellular structure dysfunctions on the network dynamics. Such simulations have to be implemented on computer clusters in a grid-based architectures.

Opis:
Bird cherry (Padus avium Mill.) is a medicinal and ornamental plant. Its flowers, fruits and bark are used in herbal medicine. Bird cherry is planted in parks, along roads and also used in the landscape and reclamation plantations. The first three years after planting determines the seedling survival rate of introduced plants. During this period, the plants should have adequate soil moisture, which can be provided by the properly designed and operated irrigation system. The aim of the research was to assess the bird cherry water needs during the first three years after planting. As a measure of water requirements, the potential evapotranspiration (Etp) of the plants was applied. The modified for Polish conditions by Żakowicz (2010) Blaney-Criddle’s formula using the adjusted crop coefficients was applied. It was assumed that the growing season of plants starts on April 1 and ends on October 31. The estimates were carried out for five agro-climatic regions of Poland during the years 1981-2010. The rainfall deficiency (or excess) in the period from April to October was calculated based on the difference between the plants water needs (showed as Etp) and the precipitation totals. The average water requirements of bird cherry in all studied regions during the period of the highest water needs (July-August) were 233 mm. The highest water requirements (around 242 mm) in the period July-August occurred in the central-north-western and central-eastern regions. The lowest water requirements (227 mm) were noted in the north-eastern and south-eastern regions. In each decade of the long-term, a significant rising tendency of water needs in the period July-August by 5 mm was noted. During the years 1981-2010, the rainfall deficiency in the period July-August occurred in 29 years in the north-eastern and central-eastern regions, in 28 years in the central-north-western region, in 27 years in the south-western region and in 25 years in the south-eastern region. In all studied regions during the long-term, the increasing tendency of bird cherry water requirements during the growing season was noted. The temporal variability of bird cherry water needs, with the exception of the central-north-western region, was important for each region.
Czeremcha zwyczajna (Padus avium Mill.), nazywana również czeremchą pospolitą, jest rośliną leczniczą i ozdobną. Jej kwiaty, owoce i kora są wykorzystywane w ziołolecznictwie. Bywa sadzona w parkach i przy drogach, a także stosowana w zadrzewieniach krajobrazowych i rekultywacyjnych. Decydującym o wysokiej udatności nasadzeń jest zwłaszcza okres pierwszych trzech lat po nasadzeniu roślin wprowadzanych na dany teren. Wymaga to zapewnienia wystarczającej ilości wody poprzez dobrze zaprogramowane nawodnienia. Celem podjętych badań była próba oszacowania potrzeb wodnych czeremchy zwyczajnej w pierwszych trzech latach po nasadzeniu. Jako miarę zapotrzebowania wody przez rośliny przyjęto ewapotranspirację potencjalną. Wykorzystano do tego celu, zmodyfikowany dla warunków Polski przez Żakowicza (2010), wzór Blaney-Criddle’a, z użyciem dostosowanych do niego współczynników roślinnych. Przyjęto, że sezon wegetacyjny czeremchy zwyczajnej rozpoczyna się 1 kwietnia a kończy 31 października. Obliczenia przeprowadzono dla różnych regionów agro-klimatycznych Polski w latach 1981-2010. Niedobory (lub nadmiary) opadów w okresie kwiecień-październik obliczono z różnicy pomiędzy potrzebami wodnymi czeremchy, wyrażonymi, jako Etp dla tego okresu, a sumą opadów atmosferycznych. Potrzeby wodne czeremchy w okresie jej największego zapotrzebowania na wodę (lipiec-sierpień) w 5 regionach Polski wyniosły 233 mm. Największe potrzeby wodne w lipcu i w sierpniu, wystąpiły w dwóch regionach Polaki: środkowo-północno-zachodnim i środkowo-wschodnim (około 242 mm). Najmniejsze potrzeby wodne (średnio 227 mm), stwierdzono w północno-wschodnim i południowo-wschodnim regionie Polski. W każdej dekadzie analizowanego wielolecia zaznaczyła się istotna tendencja wzrostu zapotrzebowania na wodę o 5 mm w okresie lipca i sierpnia. W badanym trzydziestoleciu, niedobory opadów w okresie lipiec-sierpień wystąpiły w 29 latach w regionach północno-wschodnim i środkowo-wschodnim, w regionie środkowo-północno-zachodnim w 28 latach, w południowo-zachodnim w 27 latach, a w południowo-wschodnim niedobory opadów wystąpiły w 25 latach. We wszystkich badanych regionach rozpatrywanego trzydziestolecia, zaznaczyła się tendencja do zwiększenia się potrzeb wodnych czeremchy w okresie wegetacji. Trend zmienności czasowej potrzeb wodnych był, z wyjątkiem regionu środkowo-północno-zachodniego, istotny w przypadku każdego regionu.

The progressive mechanization and automation of industrial equipment is the driving force of progress, not only in the field of production but also in the measuring and control equipment. In mold production, the automation of processes such as forming molds and cores along with their assembly has led to increases in serial production, reductions in defects, and the shortening of molding times, among others. Thanks to automation in mold and core departments and the use of all sorts of manipulators, mold production in foundries has gained momentum. Unfortunately, in addition to the mentioned advantages, there are also new challenges as to the quality and properties of the molding and core sands used in highly automated foundries.This article presents recent research on molding sand elasticity. The topic was introduced as an attempt to answer the new needs of highly mechanized foundries. The article discusses a new method of measuring the resistance of molding materials to undergoing mechanical deformation (molding sand elasticity), with an additional analysis of the bending strengths of the tested samples. Precise measurements, test sample preparation, and interpretation of the received results are presented in the article.

In the foundry industry, as in many other fields we seek to achieve the best quality with the least losses and the lowest cost. To meet these demands numerous plants increased automatization of their manufacturing processes. However, with changes in the production process it is necessary to change also the materials used. Not only casting alloys that are used in production, but also applied moulding and core sands are important. Proper selection and evaluation of the properties of used moulding mixtures is crucial in order to achieve a highly efficient production. In this article a new issue concerning the use of flexibility in foundry molding and core was mentioned. It explains the principles of measurement and interpretation of the obtained results for the cold-box moulding sands.

A possibility of recognition of the clinical status of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in relation to severity of the disease was investigated. Three groups: (i) healthy controls (n=15) and two subgroups of ALS patients (ii) mild (n=15) and (iii) severe (n=15) were considered as classes. Four features of the subjects: (i) their age (AGE) (ii) erythropoietin concentration in serum (SERUM), (iii) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and (iv) duration time of the disease (Tdis) were used for classifier construction based on the k Nearest Neighbours (k-NN) rule, known from pattern recognition theory. The presented results demonstrate that the pattern recognition approach may be useful for the evaluation of the severity of the ALS disease.

Opis:
The two kinds of classifier based on the k-NN rule, the standard and the parallel version, were used for recognition of severity of ALS disease. In case of the second classifier version, feature selection was done separately for each pair of classes. The error rate, estimated by the leave one out method, was used as a criterion as for determination the optimum values of k's as well as for feature selection. All features selected in this manner were used in the standard and in the parallel classifier based on k-NN rule. Furthermore, only for the verification purpose, the linear classifier was applied. For this kind of classifier the error rates were calculated by use the training set also as a testing one. The linear classifier was trained by the error correction algorithm with a modified stop condition. The data set concerned with the healthy subjects and patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The set of several biomarkers such as erythropoietin, matrix metalloproteinases and their tissue inhibitors measured in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were treated as features. It was shown that CSF biomarkers were very sensitive for the ALS progress.

Ditylenchus destructor is a serious pest of numerous economically important plants worldwide. The population of this nematode species was isolated from the root zone of Ammophila arenaria on a Baltic Sea sand dune. This population’s morphological and morphometrical characteristics corresponded to D. destructor data provided so far, except for the stylet knobs’ height (2.1–2.9 vs 1.3–1.8) and their arrangement (laterally vs slightly posteriorly sloping), the length of a hyaline part on the tail end (0.8–1.8 vs 1–2.9), the pharyngeal gland arrangement in relation to the intestine (dorsal or ventral vs dorsal, ventral or lateral) and the appearance of vulval lips (smooth vs annulated). Ribosomal DNA sequence analysis confirmed the identity of D. destructor from a coastal dune.

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are implicated in the pathogenesis of motor neuron degeneration in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and might be potential markers of diagnosis, prognosis and monitoring treatment effects. The aim of the present study was evaluation of the MMPs significance in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF MMPs) of patients with ALS in relation to severity of the disease. Metalloproteinases MT-MMP-1, MMP-2, MMP-9 and additionally age of subjects and disease duration were analyzed. The results demonstrate that the error of differentiation between healthy subjects and ALS patients (for MMP-2 feature) as well as between mild and severe ALS states (for CSF MMPs set) equalled to 0.033. In conclusion, the pattern recognition approach may be useful for differentation of ALS progressing on the basis of CSF MMPs features.

This paper presents a new perspective on the issue of reclamation of moulding and core sands. Taking as a premise that the reclamation process must remain on the surface of grains some not separated binding materials rests, it should be chosen the proper moulding sand's composition that will be least harmful for the reclaim quality. There are two different moulding and core sands taken into examinations. The researches prove that a small correction of their compositions (hardener type) improves the quality of the received reclaims. Carried out in this article studies have shown that such an approach to the problem of reclamation of the moulding and core sands is needed and reasonable.

Opis:
The article is discussing authors examinations concerning the influence of the sulphur diffusion from moulding sand on reduction the efficiency of modifier elements in the process of making the nodular cast iron. In case of magnesium decrease of its content is observe, as a result of forming the magnesium sulphide. In consequence the participation of magnesium is falling below the concentration essential to create a spheroid graphite. The source of sulphur in no-bake sand with resin modified by furfuryl alcohol is a hardener, on the basis of sulphonic acids and sulphuric acid. Described examinations relate to no-bake sands made on the warp of fresh quartz sand.
