The paper is the revision, extended and full version of the short (6 pages) preliminary presentation of the grounding of the notion of Continuum given in Section 6 of the paper Types and operations ICS PAS Report No. 1030 (also at http://arxiv.org/abs/1501.03043). Here, primitive types (corresponding to the intuitive concept of Continuum) are introduced along with primitive operations, constructors, and relations.

In this paper a formal system called collection of dynamical systems with dimensional reduction is considered. This is a multiscale method of mathematical description which allows to consider molecular dynamics and continuum mechanics within one theoretical framework. Transition between molecular dynamics and continuum mechanics is realized by means of the dimensional reduction procedure. In order to realize such a procedure the formulation of continuum mechanics is modified. This modification consists in incorporation scale of averaging for properties of processes considered during modelling into this formulation. As a result we introduce finite-dimensional fields on continuum only. All fundamental terms of continuum mechanics are now joined with an elementary dynamical system. In such a case continuum mechanics can be obtained by means of the dimensional reduction procedure applied to the elementary dynamical system. A numerical example of vibrating chain of material points is realized in order to show how in practice the dimensional reduction can be carried out. In this example decomposition of processes into slowly and quickly varying parts is accomplished. To this end a finite element representation of averaged fields is applied. Solutions of equations of the elementary dynamical system and the dimensionally reduced dynamical system are compared.

The Julio Estrada’s output is still an unexplored area, what creates the opportunity to study the phenomenon called discontinuum-continuum. During the last thirty-six years of his creative activity, Estrada has developed several aspects of the macro-timbre that integrate particular compounds of a composition. In his research, Estrada confronts two different situations in the compositional process: continuous transformation of the sound and chronographical method, using strictly defined recording process in order to receive three-dimensional movements of the sound in the topological order. As a result of existence these two situations, a musical work is impossible to be defined by one technique or musical style. Examination of the theory of composition called discontinuum-continuum allows one to understand a new methodology of musical creation that involves scientific research of the physical phenomenon of sound and introspection of the imagination of the sound.

In this piece I argue for posthumanism-based deliberation and education toward just global ecologies. I propose posthumanism’s nonanthropocentric ethical approach and conceptual framework enables a processual multiperspectival account of rich, variegated bionetworks and their organic and inorganic materials’ interrelationships and interdependencies. Among reciprocal studies and methodologies, I consider Mitchell’s (2004) integrative pluralism in tandem with a developmental systems paradigm of co-emergence to acknowldge the dynamic epistemological continuum of complex ecologies. In terms of specific embedded learning experiences, I briefly discuss Lind’s Konstanz Method of Dilemma Discussion (KMDD)® as one specific approach in which to cultivate democratic capacities whilst embracing the destabilizing-stabilizing tendencies of posthumanistic praxis for inclusive flourishing.

A homeomorphism f : X → X of a compactum X is expansive (resp. continuum-wise expansive) if there is c > 0 such that if x, y ∈ X and x ≠ y (resp. if A is a nondegenerate subcontinuum of X), then there is n ∈ ℤ such that $d(f^n(x), f^n(y)) > c$ (resp. $diam f^n(A) > c$). We prove the following theorem: If f is a continuum-wise expansive homeomorphism of a compactum X and the covering dimension of X is positive (dim X > 0), then there exists a σ-chaotic continuum Z = Z(σ) of f (σ = s or σ = u), i.e. Z is a nondegenerate subcontinuum of X satisfying: (i) for each x ∈ Z, $V^σ(x; Z)$ is dense in Z, and (ii) there exists τ > 0 such that for each x ∈ Z and each neighborhood U of x in X, there is y ∈ U ∩ Z such that $lim inf_{n → ∞} d(f^n(x), f^n(y))$ ≥ τ if σ = s, and $lim inf_{n → ∞} d(f^{-n}(x), f^{-n}(y))$ ≥ τ if σ = u; in particular, $W^σ(x) ≠ W^σ(y)$. Here
  $V^s(x; Z) = {z ∈ Z|$ there is a subcontinuum A of Z such that
      x, z ∈ A and $lim_{n → ∞} diam f^n(A) = 0}$,
$V^u(x; Z) = {z ∈ Z| there is a subcontinuum A of Z such that
      x, z ∈ A and $lim_{n → ∞} diam f^{-n}(A) = 0}$,
   $W^s(x) = {x' ∈ X|$ $lim_{n → ∞} d(f^n(x), f^n(x')) = 0}$, and
   $W^u(x) = {x' ∈ X|$ $lim_{n → ∞} d(f^{-n}(x), f^{-n}(x'))=0}$.
As a corollary, if f is a continuum-wise expansive homeomorphism of a compactum X with dim X > 0 and Z is a σ-chaotic continuum of f, then for almost all Cantor sets C ⊂ Z, f or $f^{-1}$ is chaotic on C in the sense of Li and Yorke according as σ = s or u). Also, we prove that if f is a continuum-wise expansive homeomorphism of a compactum X with dim X > 0 and there is a finite family $\mathbb{F}$ of graphs such that X is $\mathbb{F}$-like, then each chaotic continuum of f is indecomposable. Note that every expansive homeomorphism is continuum-wise expansive.
