Opis:
This paper explores how diasporans achieve business model innovation by using their unique resources. The hypothesis underlying the paper is that the unique backgrounds and resources of the diaspora businesses, due to different sources of information and experiences as well as multiple networks, contributes to business model innovation in a distinctive manner. We investigate the English school market in the Philippines which is established by East Asian diaspora who innovate a business model of conventional English schools. Two case studies were conducted with Japanese diaspora English schools. Their business is analyzed using a business model canvas (Osterwalder & Pigneur, 2010) and contrasted with the conventional business model. The empirical cases show that diaspora businesses use knowledge about their country of origin and engage with country of residence and multiple networks in different locations and constellations to identify unique opportunities, leading to a business model innovation.

This study aims to identify key phenomena and regularities in the business models of regional airlines in the context of a decreasing number of players in this market despite the development of regional airport infrastructure. Since previous studies have focused on the analysis of supra-regional aviation, this paper focuses on specific elements of regional airline business models and the identification of key elements that are crucial for particular conditions on the aviation market. Thiswork contributes to development ofaviation management and specifically to the construction of business models, but can also be useful for practical implementations in small- or middle-size airlines. Thisresearch is qualitative in nature, based mostly on interviews with managers of regional airline companies. This approach has some limitations in the context of representativeness due to its retrospective nature and the potential bias of the respondents; therefore, it requires further verification. However, this studyallowed us to establish recommendations for practitioners in the area of key business model elements for thesekinds of carriers and further research.

The sustainable business model (SBM) concept emerged as one of the most compelling research topics in contemporary management. The multifariousness of discussion areas and problems related to creating, implementing, and modifying SMBs offers great at is ultimate, which means that it is sustainable in all three dimensions, i.e., in the technological, social, and environmental context, by applying innovations corresponding to these categories (technological, social, and organizational). Particular attention was paid to the discussion on SBM archetypes and a framework describing SBM key features that served as points of reference for further investigations. The paper comprises two major parts; the introduction of the sustainable business model concept is followed by research results. The theoretical part includes a presentation of the most important SBM definitions discussed in the managerial literature. In the second empirical part, based on secondary sources, an illustrative case study of an ultimately sustainable business model (USBM) was developed and discussed.

The purpose of this work is to characterise the cooperative bank sector’s strengths, weaknesses, chances and threats identified by its representatives in Poland, as well as to determine desirable changes in the organisation and functioning of cooperative banks. In analytical terms, the assessments and conclusions were based on presentations and panel discussions of participants of the Forum of Cooperative Bank Leaders, which was held in Warsaw on 17–18 September 2019. It was concluded on the basis of the analysis that although cooperative banks are aware of their weaknesses and strengths as well as they see chances and threats for their operations, they clearly lack consensus on the shape and joint actions in the scope of the development of a new business model. The greatest expectations of these banks are connected with the development of electronic economy and digitisation, which requires considerable financial outlays and organisational effort. The key problem is the insufficient level of integration and cooperation within associations functioning and among them, as well as lack of willingness – even reluctance – of many banks to change the existing model. Greater integration of all entities in the cooperative bank sector is the necessary condition for the improvement of banks’ operations and their further development.

In this study, we explore the connections between business model adaptation and the success of new ventures. We do so by analysing in depth the business model evolution of three new Italian ventures throughout their first years of life. We try to understand if and how the evolution of these firms’ business models is connected to their success. Our analysis reveals that adapting their business models was crucial to enabling these firms to survive in extremely dynamic environments. However, it did not fully act as a catalyst for their processes of growth and did not increase their profitability.

Companies today face volatile environments, short product life cycles, and changing customer requirements, which is especially the case in high-technology fields. In such environments, concentrating only on technological and product innovations is not sufficient to gain competitive advantages. Instead, companies need innovative business models in order to stand out from their competitors. To successfully change business models, companies require appropriate competencies. Thus, the objective of this research is to identify how companies can prepare their business model(s) to counteract environmental changes flexibly. With the aid of the chosen exploratory, qualitative research design, we investigate companies operating in hightechnology branches. In total, 20 companies participated in our study. The interviews were conducted with CEOs, vice-presidents, product managers or other managers responsible for business model developments. The research revealed that companies can prepare the business model and its elements ex ante through developing capabilities in order to raise the flexibility of the business model. These capabilities have to be developed with regard to several internal and external issues driving these changes.

Sweden’s agriculture industry has faced many challenges in recent years. Among the most severe challenges are the decrease in the number of small and medium-sized farms, the decrease in the number of people employed in agricultural activities, and the increase in governmental regulations and legislation governing such activities. At the same time, the demand that agriculture contributes to sustainable social and ecological development has increased. Although research shows that sustainable business model innovation (SBMI) contributes to the creation of sustainable businesses and to the development of a sustainable society, Swedish agriculture has not been at the forefront in the use of SBMI. The purpose of this paper is to examine the barriers to SBMI in Swedish agriculture in order to understand why farmers seldom engage in SBMI. This qualitative study follows the Gioia methodology and data for the analysis were acquired in semi-structured interviews with entrepreneurs at six family farms in Sweden. The paper makes a theoretical contribution to the research on SBMI with its focus on sustainable entrepreneurship in the Swedish agricultural industry. The paper concludes that the barriers to SBMI are external, internal, and contextual.

An additional analysis of banking business models can supply useful tools for understanding the nature of risks related to a given banking business model, and its influence on systemic risk. These tools are useful to market participants and regulation and supervisory institutions. The main goal of this article is an identification of contexts and conditions of the banking business model as a supervisory perspective. This approach allows to perceive its characteristics, aims, and methodology requirements. The supervisory perspective on business models was also compared to other practical and theoretical approaches, creating analytical context. Background: Software plays an essential role in enabling digital transformation via digital services added to traditional products or fully digital business offerings. This calls for a better understanding of the relationships between the dynamic nature of business models and their realization using software engineering practices. Aim: In this paper, we synthesize the implications of digitalization on business model flexibility for software-intensive companies based on an extensive literature survey and a longitudinal case study at Ericsson AB. We analyze how software-intensive companies can better synchronize business model changes with software development processes and organizations. Method: We synthesize six propositions based on the literature review and extensive industrial experience with a large software-intensive company working in the telecommunication domain. Conclusions: Our work is designed to facilitate the cross-disciplinary analysis of business model dynamics and business model flexibility by linking value, transaction, and organizational learning to business model change. We believe that software engineering tools and methods can play a crucial role in enabling more automated synchronization between technology and business model changes.

The issue of business models is a current and more and more deeply analysed field of scientific research. However, despite the requirements of a solid and comprehensive research approach, capable of capturing the multidimensionality of business models, there is a continuous dissatisfaction with the conducted empirical research in this area. The aim of the article is to present the possibility of using the configurational approach and fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fs/QCA) to business models research, which enables to conduct comprehensive, integrated analyses. The research was conducted on the basis of a group of 53 enterprises classified in the high-tech sector. The research provided an insight into the key and auxiliary elements of the selected business models, and the methods of their mutual interaction in the context of the configuration of these elements were monitored, at the same time providing insight into the equifinality of the configuration. The results may form the basis for a deeper discussion on the definition of business models and their core components.

Designers have become aware of the importance of creatig strong emotinal experiences intertwined with new tangible products for the past decade, however an increased interest from firms has emerged in developing new service and business models as complimentary forms of emotion-driven innovation. This interdisciplinary study draws from the psychological sciences – theory of emotion – and the management sciences – business model literature to introduce this new innovation agenda. The term visceral hedonic rhetoric (VHR) is defined as the properties of a product, (and in this paper service and business model extensions) that persuasively induce the pursuit of pleasure at an instinctual level of cognition. This research paper lays the foundation for VHR beyond a product setting, presenting the results from an empirical study where organizations explored the possibilities for VHR in the context of their business. The results found that firms currently believe VHR is perceived in either their product and/or services they provide. Implications suggest shifting perspective surrounding the use of VHR across a firm’s business model design in order to influence the outcomes of their product and/or service design, resulting in an overall stronger emotional connection with the customer.

Introduction/background: E-commerce has become one of the most important innovations in today's economy delivering significant economic value. It is not surprising, therefore, that businesses around the world operating in various industries are inclined to use e-commerce to optimise their performance. The use of e-commerce is fostered by the huge increase in internet accessibility. Businesses working on e-commerce models have the ability to deliver products to customers within a short period of time. These advantages have resulted in a high level of competition in the e-commerce industry today. Some online shops succeed and others fail. The paper looks at this problem from a business model perspective. Business models are generally oriented towards creating value for the customer, but the paper looks for its most valuable components in the context of e-commerce. Aim of the paper: The purpose of the study is to identify the business model of a successful e-commerce company. All its components are analysed, in particular the correlation between the selection factors of the online shop and the consumer values of the shop under study. The paper designs a process for creating a business model for e-commerce. Materials and methods: This paper uses materials from the master's thesis "Business models in ecommerce", defended at the Silesian University of Technology in 2022 by Justyna Koloch. A case study analysing the business model of an e-commerce company was used as the main research method. Results and conclusions: As a result, the paper shows the process of a design approach to building and testing an e-commerce business model. An overview of this process provides a glimpse into the problem of finding effective e-commerce business models. The design approach to creating a business model and the use of different schemes increases sales opportunities, attracts different types of customers and encourages collaboration to achieve success in the highly competitive e-commerce market.
