Opis:
The record of Hexagonarta in the Lower and Middle Devonian shows that only slow rates of change occurred at these times, whereas in Frasnian time there occurred complex diversity and speciation patterns. Very rapid faunal changes and mass extinctions in corals have been observed near the boundary of Middle Devonian and Upper Devonian and at the end of Fr 1 time. Based on the study of population variation, ecological variation and phylogenetic lineage, the complete evolutionary patterns of Hexagonaria can be traced in the Givetian and Frasnian. The evolutionary patterns observed in different facies demonstrate that: 1. most changes in diversity and speciation were strictly related to differences in the biology of species adapted to different or changing environments, 2. the critical factors in encouraging diversification of species appear to be a combination of ecologic conditions and paleogeographic situations, 3. some parallel evolutions were independent of environments and paleogeographic isolation but were due to time.

Activity of users on Internet discussion forums is analyzed. The rank of users is shown to be approximated better by stretched-exponential function than by the Zipf law. Cumulative distribution function is found as an excellent tool in analysis of the dynamics of the collective social phenomena. We are able to approximate the number of blog comments with time by simple sigmoidal functions: probability of posting a comment is given by P(t)=P₀(t)/[1+P₀(t)], where $P_0(t)=(t//t_0)^{β}$ and β is close to 1.

Opis:
Kelvin probe microscopy is an experimental technique designed to investigate fluctuations of surface potential (work function per electron) related to distribution of electric charge or variations in composition. The paper describes principle and precision of measurements. The results obtained for group-III nitrides semiconductor heterostructures grown on c-plane sapphire by metal-organic vapour phase epitaxy are presented. The observations concerns defects: inversion domains for Ga- and N-polar layers, threading dislocations and effects of spontaneous polarization leading to 2D carrier gas. To achieve insight in the evolution of defects, bevelled and cross-sectioned samples were investigated along with surface of "as grown" layers. Applicability of standard Kelvin probe microscopy method was also extended by investigating dependence of the surface potential on variable wavelength illumination, offering opportunity for spectroscopy of individual defects.

Opis:
The optimization of pulsed power inductors' geometry is a difficult multi-dimensional task. On the one hand, an inductor could be destroyed because of the Joule overheating, on the other hand, it might be damaged by the Lorentz forces acting in its windings. The magnetic field pulse up to 50 T is the target while fields of this magnitude are the interest in many scientific applications. All factors mentioned are directly dependent on inductor's geometry, i.e. on the number of winding layers and windings per layer. Therefore, a detailed analysis of thermodynamic, electromagnetic and mechanical processes is inevitable and was carried out for different geometrical inductor configurations to reach the goal: a non-destructive inductor that can meet required magnetic field parameters. Direct calculation methods were used to create universal algorithms in MATLAB environment. The zone of inductor geometries, where stresses do not exceed the yield strength of materials, inductor is not overheated and generated magnetic field magnitude is in acceptable range, is given as a result which enables to manufacture new prototypes saving additional costs and time.

Opis:
The growth of high frequency HBT structures using silane-based epitaxy has been studied. The integrity of SiGe layers in the base and the control of the collector profile using As- or P-doping grown at 650°C have been investigated. The results showed that the growth rate of SiGe layers has a strong effect on the evolution of defect density in the structure. Furthermore, B-doped SiGe layers have a higher thermal stability compared to undoped layers. The analysis of the collector profiles showed a higher incorporation of P in silane-based epitaxy compared to As. Meanwhile, the growth of As- or P-doped layers on the patterned substrates suffered from a high loading effect demanding an accurate calibration.

Opis:
Ultracold atoms in optical lattices have been intensively investigated in recent years as they provide a very well controllable environment for observation of many-body quantum phenomena, closely mimicking physics of strongly interacting electronic systems. Here, we use the quantum rotor approach supplemented by the Bogolyubov method to investigate one- and two-particle excitations, which are a measure of inter-particle correlations. We calculate one-particle spectral function and dynamic structure factor, which can be observed using spectroscopy of cold atomic systems. Our calculations require a significant numerical effort to determine multidimensional convolutions of momentum and frequency dependent constituents functions, which we achieve using parallelised fast Fourier transform. We observe the appearance of sharp coherence peaks in the superfluid phase of the cold bosons, which closely resembles the formation of sharply defined quasiparticle excitations below $T_{c}$ in cuprates or smeared excitation spectra characteristic for strongly interacting systems.

Opis:
Homologous series 1.m.7(HH) of liquid crystalline compounds, varying in the chiral chain length m (m=4-9), were studied. These compounds are characterized by a long helical pitch in an antiferroelectric phase, which is higher than the measuring range of the available instruments. The temperature dependence of the helical pitch of these compounds was determined by the extrapolation of the results obtained for the mixtures of 1.m.7(HH) compounds with 1.4.7(HF) compound of a known helical pitch value. The helical pitch measurements were made by spectrophotometry and phase transition temperatures were measured by polarizing thermomicroscopy. Extrapolation of the results let established that the investigated liquid crystals are characterized by the helical pitch increasing and then decreasing upon heating, which is accompanied by the helical twist sense inversion from the right-handed structure to the left-handed one.

Opis:
We study a behaviour of mixture of two species of ultracold bosons trapped in optical lattice. Using mean-field approximation, we determine the phase diagram of the system for wide range of parameters. We observe that each of the groups of atoms can condense into superfluid state or localize and form the Mott insulator, which yields that the whole system is either superfluid, the Mott insulator, or a mixed state. It appears that introduction of interaction between different kinds of atoms can strongly renormalise the phase diagram. It can alter the critical behaviour modifying multi-criticality of crossing points and order of phase transitions between mixed and superfluid states.

Strong global correlations in the systems of coupled chaotic map lattices based on a modified logistic map are investigated. It is shown that, in the parameter range close to the edge of chaos as defined for an individual map, the systems exhibit off-diagonal long-range order and single-particle reduced density matrices defined in a natural way possess one strongly dominant eigenvalue. In addition, pattern formation [13] in the above systems has been investigated.

Using the United Nations Commodity Trade Statistics Database we construct the Google matrix of the world trade network and analyze its properties for various trade commodities for all countries and all available years from 1962 to 2009. The trade flows on this network are classified with the help of PageRank and CheiRank algorithms developed for the World Wide Web and other large scale directed networks. For the world trade this ranking treats all countries on equal democratic grounds independent of country richness. Still this method puts at the top a group of industrially developed countries for trade in all commodities. Our study establishes the existence of two solid state like domains of rich and poor countries which remain stable in time, while the majority of countries are shown to be in a gas like phase with strong rank fluctuations. A simple random matrix model provides a good description of statistical distribution of countries in two-dimensional rank plane. The comparison with usual ranking by export and import highlights new features and possibilities of our approach.
