Twee vertaalslagen: Over het vertalen van Middelnederlandse teksten in het moderne Pools In dit artikel worden strategieën voor het vertalen van Middelnederlandse teksten in het Pools voorgesteld. Sommige hier voorgestelde verschijnselen die typisch zijn voor de middeleeuwse literatuur, zijn geanalyseerd met het oog op modern Nederlandse en (eventuele) Poolse vertalingen. Erotische elementen, metaforen en de noodzaak van aanvullende verklaringen of simplificaties worden hier getoond op basis van voorbeelden van reeds gepubliceerde teksten en andere mogelijke vertalingen.
    This article outlines the strategies for the translation of Middle Dutch texts into Polish. Some chosen features typical for the medieval literature are analysed with regard to modern Dutch and (possible) Polish translations. Erotic elements, metaphors and the necessity of additional explanations or simplifications are shown based on some examples of the already published texts and other possible translations.

    Deze bijdrage wil aan de hand van een corpus van acht hedendaagse films uit België en Nederland (vier originele versies en vier die hun Nederlandse of Vlaamse remakes zijn) kijken naar het gebruik van diminutieven in beleefdheidsstrategieën in Nederland en Vlaanderen. Het corpusmateriaal toont een zichtbaar verschil in zowel kwantitatief (174 diminutieven in de Nederlandse films en 275 in de Belgische) en kwalitatief gebruik van diminutieven in Nederland en België. Naast de primaire functie heeft het verkleinwoord in beide variëteiten van het Nederlands een aantal pragmatische functies, maar het wordt in bepaalde contexten vaker gebruikt in België. Dit komt overeen met het gebruik van diminutieven in beleefdheidsstrategieën. Terwijl de Nederlanders en Vlamingen op een soortgelijke manier gebruik maken van positieve beleefdheidsstrategieën, is er in de negatieve strategieën een duidelijk verschil.
    This paper, using a corpus of eight contemporary films from Belgium and the Netherlands (four original versions and four that are their Dutch or Flemish remakes), aims to look at the use of diminutives in politeness strategies in the Netherlands and in Flanders, the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium. The corpus material shows that there is a visible difference in both the quantitative (174 diminutives in the Dutch films and 275 in the Belgian ones) and qualitative use of diminutives in the Netherlands and in Belgium. Besides its primary function, the diminutive has several pragmatic functions in both varieties of Dutch, however it is more frequently used in certain contexts in Belgium. This corresponds with the use of diminutives in politeness strategies. While the Dutch and Flemish use diminutives in a similar way in positive politeness strategies, in the negative strategies, there is quite a clear difference.
    Niniejszy artykuł skupia się użyciu zdrobnień w strategiach uprzejmościowych w Holandii oraz Flandrii, niderlandzkojęzycznej części Belgii. Na cele badania zestawiono korpus składający się z ośmiu belgijskich i holenderskich filmów, z których cztery są wersjami oryginalnymi, a cztery — ich holenderskim albo belgijskim remakiem. Materiał językowy z korpusu pokazuje, że w użyciu zdrobnień w Holandii i Flandrii istnieje zarówno różnica ilościowa (174 zdrobnienia w filmach holenderskich i 275 w belgijskich), jak i jakościowa. Choć w obu odmianach języka niderlandzkiego zdrobnienia, obok swojej podstawowej funkcji, pełnią również podobne funkcje pragmatyczne, to ich użycie w kilku z nich jest w Belgii większe niż w Holandii. To przekłada się też na użycie zdrobnień w strategiach uprzejmościowych. O ile Holendrzy i Flamandowie w podobny sposób stosują zdrobnienia w pozytywnych strategiach grzecznościowych, to w negatywnych można zauważyć dość wyraźne różnice.

    Ograniczenia środowiska audiowizualnego i ich wpływ na tworzenie napisów w kontekście niderlandzko-czeskim Niniejszy artykuł analizuje tworzenie napisów jako formy tłumaczenia, a dokładniej ograniczenia audiowizualne, które są nakładane na proces tworzenia napisów. Po omówieniu niektórych najważniejszych ograniczeń technicznych środowiska audiowizualnego przedstawiono taksonomię strategii tłumaczeniowych, jakie tłumacz napisów może wykorzystywać, aby skutecznie poradzić sobie z wyżej wymienionymi ograniczeniami. Taksonomia została następnie umieszczona w kontekście niderlandzko-czeskim i zilustrowana przykładami na podstawie dwóch filmów: niderlandzkiego filmu pt. „Czarna Księga” (Zwartboek) z czeskimi napisami oraz czeskiego filmu pt. „Obsługiwałem angielskiego króla” (Obsluhoval jsem anglického krále) z napisami niderlandzkimi. Przykłady te umożliwiają wgląd w praktyczne zastosowanie wspomnianych strategii tłumaczeniowych i pokazują, w jaki sposób tłumacz napisów poradził sobie z ograniczeniami środowiska audiowizualnego. De beperkingen van de audiovisuele omgeving en hun invloed op ondertitelen in Nederlands-Tsjechische context Deze bijdrage onderzoekt ondertiteling als een vertaalvorm, en meer specifiek de beperkingen van de audiovisuele omgeving die worden opgelegd aan het ondertitelingsproces. Na bespreking van een aantal van de belangrijkste technische beperkingen van de audiovisuele omgeving wordt een taxonomie van vertaalstrategieën gepresenteerd die de vertaler-ondertitelaar kan toepassen om effectief om te gaan met de genoemde beperkingen. Deze taxonomie wordt vervolgens in een Tsjechisch-Nederlandse context geplaatst en geïllustreerd met voorbeelden uit de Tsjechisch ondertitelde editie van de Nederlandse film Zwartboek en de Nederlands ondertitelde versie van de Tsjechische film Obsluhoval jsem anglického krále (Ik diende de koning van Engeland). Deze voorbeelden zullen inzicht geven in de praktische toepassing van de genoemde vertaalstrategieën en aantonen op welke manier de vertaler-ondertitelaar met de beperkingen van de audiovisuele omgeving is omgegaan.
    This contribution explores subtitling as a form of translation, and more specifically the constraints of the audiovisual environment, which are imposed on the process of subtitling. After a discussion of some of the most important technical constraints of the audiovisual environment a taxonomy of translation strategies is presented, which the translator-subtitler can apply to effectively deal with the aforementioned constraints. This taxonomy is subsequently placed in a Czech-Dutch context and illustrated by examples from the Czech subtitled edition of the Dutch movie Zwartboek and the Dutch subtitled version of the Czech movie Obsluhoval jsem anglického krále (I served the king of England). These examples will provide insight in the practical application of the mentioned translation strategies and show in which way the translator-subtitler has dealt with the constraints of the audiovisual environment.

    Honderd jaar na de opvoering in het Servisch Nationaal Theater in Novi Sad is de in handschriftvorm bewaard gebleven Servische vertaling van Heijermans’ Op hoop van zegen voor het eerst gepubliceerd. Nader onderzoek heeft uitgewezen dat die vertaling gemaakt was voor de première in 1905 in het Nationaal Theater te Belgrado en dat de vertaler de Duitse vertaling van Franziska de Graaff heeft gebruikt als brontekst. Een grondige analyse van zijn vertaling brengt zijn vertaalstrategieën aan het licht maar toont ook aan dat er lichte wijzigingen zijn die naar een eigen inbreng of naar een andere bron zouden kunnen verwijzen. Bovendien zijn hele passages doorstreept maar zonder nadere uitleg van die ingreep. Wat de receptie van de opvoeringen betreft getuigen de schaarse recensies ervan dat het geen onverdeeld succes was. Een anonieme recensent verweet Heijermans vooral zijn ongenuanceerde kritiek op het kapitalisme. Twee anderen zagen het probleem vooral in de gebrekkige opvoering en slechte rolverdeling. Desalniettemin blijkt Heijermans meerdere sporen te hebben achtergelaten in de Servische receptiegeschiedenis wat vooral te danken is aan zijn bekendheid in Duitsland. Perifere culturen vinden immers makkelijker tot elkaar via centrale bemiddelaars.
    Sto lat po wystawieniu sztuki Hermana Heijermansa pt. Op hoop van zegen (Nadzieja) w Serbskim Teatrze Narodowym w Nowym Sadzie po raz pierwszy ukazało się drukiem serbskie tłumaczenie tego dramatu, dotąd istniejące wyłącznie w wersji odręcznej. Jak wykazały badania, przekład ten powstał przed premierą w 1905 roku w Teatrze Narodowym w Belgradzie, a tłumacz posłużył się jako tekstem źródłowym niemieckim przekładem Franziski de Graaff. Dokładna analiza przekładu ujawnia strategie translatorskie tłumacza, jak również pokazuje drobne zmiany, wprowadzone przez samego tłumacza lub zaczerpnięte z innego źródła. Dowiadujemy się także, że niektóre fragmenty tekstu oryginalnego zostały skreślone bez wyjaśnienia przyczyn takiej decyzji tłumacza. Jeśli chodzi o recepcję spektakli, nieliczne recenzje na ich temat świadczą o tym, że dramat Heijermansa nie odniósł spektakularnego sukcesu. Anonimowy recenzent obwiniał autora głównie za jego uproszczoną krytykę kapitalizmu. Dwóch innych widziało problem głównie w słabej inscenizacji i niewłaściwej obsadzie. Niemniej jednak wydaje się, że Heijermans pozostawił kilka śladów w historii serbskiej recepcji, co wynika głównie z jego sławy w Niemczech. Wszak kulturom peryferyjnym łatwiej jest dotrzeć do siebie poprzez centralnych mediatorów.
    One hundred years after its performance at the Serbian National Theatre in Novi Sad, the Serbian translation of Heijermans’s Op Hoop van Zegen (The Good Hope), which has been preserved in handwritten form, was finally published for the first time. Further investigation has shown that this translation was made for the 1905 premiere at the National Theatre in Belgrade and that the translator used the German translation by Franziska de Graaff as the source text. A thorough analysis of his translation reveals his translation strategies but also shows that there are slight changes that could refer to his own input or to another source. Moreover, entire passages have been crossed out, but without any further explanation of that procedure. As for the reception of the performances, the sparse reviews testify that it was not an unqualified success with the public. An anonymous reviewer especially blamed Heijermans for his oversimplified criticism of capitalism. Two others saw the problem mainly in the poor staging and poor division of roles. Nevertheless, Heijermans appears to have left several traces in Serbian reception history, which is mainly due to his fame in Germany. After all, peripheral cultures reach each other easier through central mediators.
