Opis:
In the book Hans Jonas about ethical responsibility of science and technology I interpret Hans Jonas philosophical conception from the perspective of searching for metaphysical foundations for a new ethics. Technological development allowed humanity to acquire new ways of changing environment and to wield control over many natural processes. It also contributed to a significant increase of our power over surrounding reality. It is hard to find a sphere of human life, which has not been influenced by technological development. Naming only a few vivid clear examples: an atomic bomb, a manned mission to land on the Moon, in vitro fertilization, antibiotics, Internet or a car, – all have changed the way of life of humanity. We can speak here about the influences on both the global level, for example the changes in atmosphere composition, the changes in the ways of communication, population growth, as well as on the local one, such as particular people dying in a car accident or particular couple talking through the medium of new means of communication. Described changes invoke new questions about good and evil, about what should be moral: advisable, allowed or what should be forbidden. At the same time, the above mentioned changes have caused a situation in which humanity is endangered by potential catastrophe, which might be caused both by conscious actions, but also by side-effects (often hard to predict) of above mentioned processes. In the introduction I present main research goals, methodology and literature. In order to create a new ethics, new conceptual frame for our selfunderstanding is needed. Therefore, in the first part of my work I present: the metaphysical understanding of concept of life, which is important for comprehension of philosophical conception of author of The Imperative of Responsibility. Moreover, I also analyze the anthropological premises, on which the ethics for technological civilization may be based. In his works, Jonas pays attention to the fact that technological development was possible because of the development of natural sciences. I present the interpre- tation of changes in the world view occurring under the influence of the appearance and development of natural sciences. I analyze those aspect of performance of sciences, which brought into being the idea of neutral character of scientific research. The conviction about the ethically neutral character of the material world around us and technical operation acted upon it is another reason for the sake of which formulating of new ethics is an extremely urgent task. It has contributed to the arise of situation, when the increasing power of our influence is not accompanied by the development of norms, which could enable us to regulate our behaviors. It may be even said that the process of growth of power is accompanied by the process of decrease of importance of norms, which could be a potential tool to control those powers. The second part of the book is devoted to the analysis of Jonas interpretation of above mentioned process and to present possible historical sources of it. In a third part I analyze the imperative of responsibility, proposition of a new rule formulated by Jonas as an answer to axiological neutrality of being. The metaphysical premises from the first part develop our understanding of the assumptions on which Jonas bases his ethics. The historical sources of our worldview presented in the second part sheds light on problems which the formation of new ethics encounters in the time of domination of natural sciences in cognitive sphere. Overall, the book aims to present philosophical thought of Jonas as a metaphysical answer to ethical challenges caused by the growth of human power, being the result of scientific and technological development. Summary includes recapitulation of main points and some questions about further research connected with ethic for technological civilization.
