    The aim of this article is to analyse cohousing in the context of Ray Oldenburg’s theory of a third place. The author argues that cohousing, which promotes the idea of deep social relations in connection with respect for individualism and sustainable consumption and prosumption, can be viewed as a new form of socialization similar to Oldenburg’s concept of the third place. The first part outlines ideas underlying the concept of a third place, while the second part focuses on the assumptions of cohousing and demand conditions for its development. This theoretical article continues the author’s considerations about the concept of third places in the era of globalization.

    The purpose of the article is to analyse virtual communities in the context of Ray Oldenburg’s third place theory. The author argues that virtual third places are a response to the needs of virtual communities and their features are similar to Oldenburg’s third places. The first part of the article presents the basics of Oldenburg’s third place theory while the second one shows the characteristics of virtual communities: a review of definitions, their typology and features. The criteria of collectivity of virtual communities are also discussed in the context of Oldenburg’s third places features.

    Nowadays we observe numerous changes in the field of employment. Possibility of flexible working hours, alternative job as being aligned to particular project, remote working and technology development results in a completely new perception of working time and space. More and more people adapt public spaces (third places) and private spaces (residences) to mobile professional activity, manifesting their freedom and ability to connect their responsibilities with leisure time. Interpretation of visual representations of mobile offices revealed by social media was the mode to find symptoms of consumption related to social status, people’ relationship with objects and ways of arranging space to transform it into offices. Analysis of photographs revealed outdating category of non-place by Marc Ague. Work is closely related to mobile devices (laptops, tablets, phones) what enhances adapting to it also spaces that in the past were considered as non-individual (public transport, airports, train stations, waiting rooms). Also the function of third places (cafes, pubs, restaurants) is changing nowadays what effects in new forms of arranging space dedicated to individual work.

    Considering several forms of diasporas, in this theoretical paper it is conceptualized as phenomena of contemporary world, primarily of transnational capitalism and informational technology. As specific form of so called sea-based diaspora, we refer to Filipino overseas workers. Indicating the national state as key actor with specific implications on Filipino seafarers diaspora at sea and on land, we affirmed our notion that global diaspora is social construct where different, often contradictory, interest of several social actors at diverse levels of agency are involved. In this context, sea and ship can be understood within third place spatial theory as highly globalized, multiethnic places of experienced diversity. Hence sociology of sea provides methodological and theoretical framework for rethinking social world and sociology itself beyond terrestrial.

    The subject of the paper is a cultural analysis of the phenomenon of work in public space. The conditions of work and its consequences for spatial planning are described. Based on the contemporary urban reality, the growing difficulty of separating work from leisure using traditional criteria, which also affects individual persons, is shown, as it frequently becomes a source of social unrest leading in consequence to various separating practices, or attempts to delineate once again the borders between those two spheres of life. A concept of an open city is also presented, as it constitutes a counterweight to the approach of a functional balance that has been in use so far. Further, examples of relevant contemporary trends in urban development have been offered. Selected issues related to such planning prospects have also been considered. The paper serves as a certain address to architects, urging them to design public place in a manner that accounts for the current transformations in the dynamics and form of work, as a chance for a city to regenerate, reducing at the same time the negative consequences of the permeation of work and leisure, which brings about a threat that social inequalities will simply increase and the vision of even greater social inequalities and exclusion.
    Przedmiotem artykułu jest kulturowa analiza fenomenu pracy w przestrzeni publicznej. Autor rozpatruje jego uwarunkowania i konsekwencje dla planowania przestrzennego. Na przykładzie współczesnych zjawisk miejskich zwraca uwagę na rosnącą trudność w oddzieleniu od siebie pracy i czasu wolnego za pomocą tradycyjnych kryteriów, z którą borykać się muszą także same jednostki: stanowi ona dla nich źródło niepokojów oraz w konsekwencji prowadzi do rozmaitych praktyk separowania – prób ponownego wytyczenia granic między tymi dwoma dziedzinami życia. W artykule przywołana jest również koncepcja miasta otwartego, stanowiąca potencjalną przeciwwagę dla dotychczasowych ujęć opartych na balansie funkcjonalnym, a także podano przykłady aktualnych trendów urbanistycznych, które się w nią wpisują. Rozważono również wybrane zagrożenia, które wiążą się z taką perspektywą planistyczną. W tekście zawarto także rodzaj apelu do architektów, w zamyśle autora zachęcający, by przestrzeń publiczną projektować tak, aby uwzględniać obecne przemiany w dynamice i formie pracy, stanowiące szansę na witalizowanie miasta, ale jednocześnie ograniczać negatywne skutki przenikania się pracy i odpoczynku, które grozi powiększeniem społecznych nierówności oraz wykluczeniem.

    The article discusses problems for native speakers and foreigners when reading literary texts during Polish language classes. Two important books are presented here (K. Koziołek, 2006; A. Janus¬ Sitarz, 2009). It also refers to publications about the importance of literature in teaching and the role of the teacher (J. Kowalikowa 2004, B. Chrząstowska 1979, 2009). The author of the article also compares the theory of A. Janus¬ Sitarz (designed for teaching Polish as a mother tongue) with J. Spiro’s concept of 6 reading types (concerning the function of literary texts in teaching Polish as a foreign language). The author concentrates on the problem of responsible reading (as described by M.P. Markowski, 2000) and on teaching being understood as an invitation to a dialogue with text. K. Koziołek, A. Janus¬ Sitarz and C. Kramsch in glottodidactics recommend this kind of dialogic approach.

    The article presented below, contrary to the suggestions contained in its title, will not give simple prescriptions for creating the desired relationships between the child and the urban environment. This is because it is not an easy task, among others due to the fact that there is no ‘middle child’, there is also no ‘present child’ but always a child between the past and the future. Concepts, in turn, such as ‘place’ or ‘city’ today lose their hitherto culturally established connotations and become ambiguous and unusually capacious under the influence of civilization changes. One thing, however, remains unchanged – it is the documented influence of the physical and social environment on the young generation, on its development and the nature of the experience gained. The article will therefore focus on: the challenges facing architects and decision makers affecting the shape of urban structures; what actions they should take to help children exist in society, present their talents and passions, gain due approval and respect; how it can be done to effectively replace ‘socialization through a computer mouse’ by ‘playing with the others on the street’, and finally – what benefits for all of us can come from Environmental Education of children and youth.
    Artykuł, wbrew sugestiom zawartym w tytule, nie da prostych recept na tworzenie pożądanych relacji pomiędzy dzieckiem a miejskich środowiskiem. Nie jest to bowiem zadanie łatwe między innymi ze względu na fakt, iż nie ma „dziecka średniego”, nie ma też „dziecka teraźniejszego”, a zawsze dziecko między przeszłością a przyszłością. Pojęcia z kolei takie jak „miejsce” czy „miasto” zatracają dzisiaj swe dotychczasowe, utrwalone kulturowo konotacje, stając się – pod wpływem przemian cywilizacyjnych – niejednoznaczne i niezwykle pojemne. Jedna rzecz pozostaje wszak niezmienna – udokumentowany wpływ otoczenia fizycznego i społecznego na młode pokolenie, na jego rozwój i charakter zdobywanych doświadczeń. Artykuł skupi się zatem na wyzwaniach, jakie stoją przed architektami i decydentami wpływającymi na kształt struktur miejskich, na działaniach, jakie powinni oni podjąć, aby pomóc dzieciom zaistnieć w społeczeństwie, zaprezentować swe talenty i pasje, zyskać należną im aprobatę i szacunek, a także na tym, co da się zrobić, aby „socjalizację przez komputerową myszkę” skutecznie zastąpiła wspólna zabawa na ulicy. I wreszcie – jakie korzyści dla nas wszystkich płynąć mogą z edukacji środowiskowej dzieci i młodzieży

    The article focuses on museums’ activity that reaches beyond the walls of their premises in the context of a concept of the so-called third place. The third place – as a gathering place which is neither one’s home, i.e. first place, nor workplace, i.e. second place – was described by an American sociologist Ray Oldenburg in 1999 in his book The Great Good Place: Cafes, Coffee Shops, Bookstores, Bars, Hair Salons, and Other Hangouts at the Heart of a Community. Three study cases have been used in the article: Museum Forum (project carried out by the National Museum in Kraków), Bródno Sculpture Park (project co-conducted by the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw), and the method of work implemented by the Ethnographic Museum in Kraków, including in particular the project Dzikie Planty (Wild “Planty” Park). I discuss assumptions the projects have been based on, how they fit in an overall strategy of the museums, and reasons why they have been undertaken. Finally, I wonder whether having been conducted in a fully accessible public space and conducive to users’ interaction make it justified to categorise them as the third places in the meaning given by Oldenburg. Although Oldenburg’s concept has been regarded by museum theorists as not applicable to museums, I have come to the conclusion that projects conducted by museums in a non-committal context of an open space meet the conditions the third places do.
    Tematem artykułu jest działalność muzeów poza murami ich siedzib w kontekście koncepcji tzw. trzeciego miejsca. Trzecie miejsce – jako miejsce spotkań, które znajduje się poza pierwszym miejscem, którym jest dom i drugim, którym jest miejsce pracy – opisał amerykański socjolog Ray Oldenburg w 1999 r., w książce The Great Good Place: Cafes, Coffee Shops, Bookstores, Bars, Hair Salons, and Other Hangouts at the Heart of a Community. W artykule podstawą dla rozważań są 3 studia przypadków: Muzeum Forum (projekt realizowany przez Muzeum Narodowe w Krakowie), Park Rzeźby na Bródnie (projekt współrealizowany przez Muzeum Sztuki Nowoczesnej w Warszawie) oraz metoda pracy Muzeum Etnograficznego w Krakowie ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem projektu Dzikie Planty. Wskazuję założenia tych projektów, ich miejsce w strategiach programowych i powody ich podjęcia przez muzea, a w finale zastanawiam się czy fakt, że są realizowane w przestrzeniach w pełni dostępnych, a ich charakter sprzyja interakcjom pomiędzy użytkownikami, może uzasadniać ich kategoryzację jako trzecich miejsc w rozumieniu Oldenburga. Mimo podnoszonej w literaturze muzeologicznej nieprzystawalności tej koncepcji do muzeów, dochodzę do wniosku, że projekty realizowane przez muzea w niezobowiązującym kontekście otwartej przestrzeni, spełniają warunki stawiane trzecim miejscom.

    Porządek społeczny Amerykańskiego Południa, oparty na supremacji białych oraz podporządkowaniu kobiet, znajduje odzwierciedlenie w przestrzeni kawiarni w powieści Fannie Flagg Smażone zielone pomidory. Tytułowa kawiarnia prowadzona przez dwie białe kobiety, Idgie Threadgoode i Ruth Jamison, staje się miejscem kontestacji właśnie tego porządku społecznego. Na początku lat 30. XX w. Idgie i Ruth, główne bohaterki powieści Flagg, wyprowadzają się ze swoich domów, aby zamieszkać razem na tyłach kawiarni, która będzie działać do 1969 r. Decyzja, aby otworzyć kawiarnię, ma podwójne znaczenie: bohaterki odrzucają / wykraczają poza przynależność do zacisza domowego, społecznie przypisywanego kobietom, ponadto – w czasach gdy prawa „Jim Crow” regulowały zinstytucjonalizowaną segregację rasową – postępują zgodnie z empatyczną wrażliwością społeczną, nakazującą im pomagać zarówno uciskanym czarnoskórym, jak i ubogim białym mieszkańcom miasteczka. Prowadzenie kawiarni pozwala Idgie i Ruth negocjować i na nowo zdefiniować własną tożsamość w kontekście sprzeciwu wobec ucisku rasowego oraz męskiej dominacji nad kobietą.
    The American South’s social order, based as it was on white supremacy and subordination of women, is reflected in the space of the café in Fannie Flagg’s Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café. The titular café run by two white women, Idgie Threadgoode and Ruth Jamison, becomes a site of contestation of that very social order. In the early 1930s Idgie and Ruth, the main heroines in Flagg’s novel, move out of their respective homes into the back of the café, which will offer its services till 1969. Their decision to run a café together has a twofold significance: they reject/transcend domesticity, a socially prescribed space for women, and they act on their increased sensitivity to help the disempowered and oppressed—the black and the poor—during the Jim Crow period. The ownership and management of the café allows Idgie and Ruth to negotiate and redefine their identities in the context of racial oppression and subordination of white women.

    The paper aims at presenting the concept of a third place and indicating how it can be applied to critical reading of travelogues. The concept of third places, presented in the ’70s by Ray Oldenburg, corresponds to a research movement searching correlation between literature and space according to the principles of the spatial turn. The application of the concept of third places seems to be of special interest during the reading of travel journals. Reactions and behavior of protagonists in third places lead to a new perspective on the person-place relation and settles a traveller in the role of a newcomer as opposed to a regular. An example of a travelogue for analysis is Tour through England by Izabela Czartoryska neé Fleming.
