    Opis:
    The main subject of this article is the activity of non-governmental organizations in Ukraine and their role in the life democratization. The article includes methods of financing non-governmental organizations and the influence of domestic and foreign subsidies for their work. Moreover, it raises a question about ethical behaviour of people, that finance these organizations and reveals the political aspects of the decisions which were made. It depicts the development dynamics of NGOs during several years. Furthermore, it emphasizes the increase of activity of all members of the NGOs during the Orange Revolution and the stagnation caused by the political crisis in 2007. This work indicates what is the stimulus for the development of Ukrainian NGOs.

    Th is experiment explored relationships between individuals’ levels of political knowledge and ability to spot manipulated media information about international aff airs as well as susceptibility to infl uence by such information. Th e context of the study was the “Orange Revolution” in Ukraine. A convenience sample of 146 students at a large American university was randomly assigned to read one of three simulated New York Times news reports, experimentally manipulated to favor either the Ukrainian government, the opposition, or a balance of political views. Analysis revealed few signifi cant relationships between level of political knowledge and spotting manipulation in news reports. Instead, trust in the New York Times explained a majority of the variance. Also, political knowledge wasn’t associated with susceptibility to manipulation. Interestingly, a majority of participants who spotted manipulation nevertheless accepted standpoints the manipulated articles promoted.

    Opis:
    The article explores the changing attitudes of Ukrainian citizens to European integration during the presidency of Viktor Yushchenko, and sheds new light on the age, regional, linguistic and other factors that correlate with the citizens’ attitudes to foreign policy directions. It proves that party politics and political demonstration affect public opinion. The author emphasizes the fact that most of the citizens do not have access to objective information about European and Euro-Atlantic structures which emphasizes the fact that information policy in this case is insufficient.
    Artykuł analizuje dynamikę postaw społeczeństwa ukraińskiego wobec integracji z Unią Europejską w oparciu o badania opinii publicznej w okresie prezydentury Wiktora Juszczenki z uwzględnieniem wieku, miejsca zamieszkania, języka respondentów oraz innych czynników skorelowanych ze stosunkiem obywateli do kierunków polityki zagranicznej. Udowadnia, że wewnętrzne procesy polityczne i stanowiska sił politycznych wywierają wpływ na opinię publiczną. Autor podkreśla fakt, że większa część obywateli nie otrzymuje wystarczająco obiektywnych informacji o strukturach europejskich i euroatlantyckich oraz że polityka informacyjna w tej sferze ma negatywny charakter.

    This article centers on key difficulties that hamper the development of a civil society in independent Ukraine. A special emphasis is put on phenomena such as: lack of a homogeneous national identity, non-existence of the collective memory shared by all Ukraine citizens, the Soviet mentality, oligarchic structures, and failure to build social capital. The work is based on the scientific literature on a civil society in Ukraine.
    Celem artykułu jest próba przedstawienia przeszkód stojących na drodze rozwoju społeczeństwa obywatelskiego na Ukrainie po uzyskaniu przez nią niepodległości. Duży nacisk położony został na ukazanie takich zjawisk, jak: brak jednolitej tożsamości narodowej Ukraińców, nieistnienie jednej pamięci zbiorowej podzielanej przez wszystkich obywateli, mentalność sowiecka, oligarchiczna władza oraz niewypracowanie kapitału społecznego. Pracę przygotowano na podstawie literatury naukowej poświęconej kwestii społeczeństwa obywatelskiego na Ukrainie.

    Polskę i Ukrainę łączy szczególne partnerstwo, nazywane strategicznym. Po 1991 roku stosunki polsko-ukraińskie rozwinęły się we wszystkich dziedzinach i na różnych szczeblach. Ważne znaczenie dla wzajemnych relacji obydwu państw miały kontakty wyż- szych przedstawicieli państwowych. Zaczynając od prezydentury Lecha Wałęsy i Leonida Krawczuka, w trakcie spotkań „na szczycie”, deklaracje i obietnice dotyczące współpracy pojawiają się stale. Podczas rządów Aleksandra Kwaśniewskiego i Leonida Kuczmy również padało wiele zapewnień, dotyczących przyszłego partnerstwa. Po „pomarańczowej rewolucji” utarło się przekonanie, że stosunki polsko-ukraińskie nigdy nie były tak korzystne jak teraz. Strategiczne partnerstwo realizuje się poprzez tworzenie instytucji współpracy dwustronnej (Komisje, Komitety, POLUKRBAT), podejmowanie wspólnych przedsięwzięć (Dni Dobrosąsiedztwa) oraz wzajemną pomoc. Jednak wiele spraw pozostaje w sferze deklaracji, a problemy które się pojawiały wynikały z nierozwiązanych spraw historycznych.
    Poland and Ukraine is connected by the special, strategic partnership. After 1991 the Polish-Ukraine mutual relations developed in all areas and on the different stages. The contacts of the higher state representatives had an important value for mutual correlations of both states. Beginning from presidency of Lech Wałęsa and Leonid Krawczuk, during the summit meetings, declarations and promises which touch a collaboration appear constantly. A lot of assurances concerning future partnership had taken place during also the presidency of Aleksander Kwaśniewski and Leonid Kuczma. After the ‘orange revolution’ the belief that the Polish-Ukrainian relations had never been so advantageous like presently become very popular. Strategic partnership is realized through creation of establishments of bilateral collaboration (Commissions, Committees, POLUKRBAT), to raising of the general undertaking (Days of the good-neighborhood) and the mutual aid. However, many businesses remain in the field of declaration, and there are still a lot of problems connected with unresolved historical issues.

    Opis:
    James II inherited the throne from his elder brother Charles only because there was not any male heir. Even the Parliament wanted to exclude him from succession, that was the exclusion crisis of 1679-1681. The Tory propaganda published Sir Robert Filmer’s Patriarcha to argue for the primogeniture principle, i.e. for the James’s title to the throne. That work introduced patriarchalism in which overlap the concepts of family and society and the authority of a father and the monarch. Therefore the monarch as the father of the nation ruled over the society that was considered to be a great family. He demanded unconditional obedience from the society just as the father demands it from the members of his family. Since Sir Robert Filmer’s name was connected to James’s right to the throne and to the conservative royalist Tory propaganda, my incentive was to examine whether James himself applied patriarchalism and the Filmer’s concepts in his political writings. This is the law (norms) in books if we apply the terms of the law in effect to the past. However, the aim of this article is to compare these norms with the practice found in the James’s declarations, proclamations, and deeds. The result of this comparison would be the law in action. Thus, the aim of this comparison is to reveal patriarchalism in James’s writings and after that to examine whether any characteristics of it can be found in his deeds and decrees of his administration. I mean especially three deeds: his coronation, the cure of the King’s evil (scrofula), and the practice of giving mercy to victims. Among the decrees I mean particularly the decrees issued during putting out the revolts against his reign. In the first two cases he was successful, however, he lost the throne to William of Orange and was expelled from it.
