One of the functions of cognitive control is to detect difficulties in information processing and adjust the level of performance. This article presents study on confl ict adaptation in which we investigated how detection of cognitive conflict influences behaviour on a subsequent trial. In two experiments we aimed to find out whether the adjustment can be carried out across two kinds of cognitive conflicts: between competing responses and requirements of two tasks. The modified version of the flanker task in switching paradigm was used so that participants had to switch between two tasks that shared the same stimulus set. The results showed that the two kinds of confl icts did not interact with each other. Furthermore, each conflict evoked conflict adaptation, but this adaptation did not occurred across conflicts. This suggests that conflict adaptation covers a set of mechanisms functioning uniquely in one domain.

This study examined cognitive predictors of susceptibility to orientation illusions: Poggendorff, Ponzo, and Zöllner. It was assumed that lower efficiency of information processing in WM and higher field dependence are conducive to orientation illusions. 61 architects (30 women) aged M = 29, +/- 1.6, and 49 university students (29 women) aged M = 23.53, +/- 4.24, were tested with Witkin’s EFT to assess their field dependence; the SWATT method was used as a measure of WM efficiency, and susceptibility to visual illusions was verified with a series of computer tasks. We obtained a small range of the explained variance in the regression models including FDI and WM indicators. On the basis of WM efficiency indicators, we managed to confirm the existence of memory predictors of susceptibility to illusions (they are rather weak, as they explain from 6% to 14% of the variance of the dependent variable). Among the architects, lower efficiency of WM processing (weaker inhibition, task-switching) and higher field dependence are responsible for greater susceptibility to orientation illusions.

Opis:
Autonomous coordination of multi-agent systems can improve the reaction and dispatching ability of multiple agents to emergency events. The existing research has mainly focused on the reactions or dispatching in specific scenarios. However, task-level coordination has not received significant attention. This study proposes a framework for autonomous switching of task-level strategies (ASTS), which can automatically switch strategies according to different scenarios in the task execution process. The framework is based on the blackboard system, which takes the form of an instance as an agent and the form of norm(s) as a strategy; it uses events to drive autonomous cooperation among multiple agents. A norm may be triggered when an event occurs. After the triggered norm is executed, it can change the data, state, and event in ASTS. To demonstrate the autonomy and switchability of the proposed framework, we develop a fire emergency reaction dispatch system. This system is applied to emergency scenarios involving fires. Five types of strategies and two control modes are designed for this system. Experiments show that this system can autonomously switch between different strategies and control modes in different scenarios with promising results. Our framework improves the adaptability and flexibility of multiple agents in an open environment and represents a solid step toward switching strategies at the task level.
