Opis:
The peridotites from the area of Korydallos, in the Pindos ophiolitic massif, crop out as deformed slices of a rather dismembered sub-oceanic, lithospheric mantle section and are tectonically enclosed within the Avdella mélange. The most sizeable block is a chromitite-bearing serpentinite showing a mesh texture. Accessory, subhedral to euhedral Cr-spinels in the serpentinite display Cr# [Cr/(Cr + Al)] values that range from 0.36 to 0.42 and Mg# [Mg/(Mg + Fe2+)] values that vary between 0.57 and 0.62, whereas the TiO2 content may be up to 0.47 wt.%. The serpentinite fragment is characterized by low abundances of magmaphile elements (Al2O3: 0.66 wt.%, CaO: 0.12 wt.%, Na2O: 0.08 wt.%, TiO2: 0.007 wt.%, Sc: 4 ppm) and enrichment in compatible elements (Cr: 2780 ppm and Ni: 2110 ppm). Overall data are in accordance with derivation of the serpentinite exotic block from a dunite that was formed in the mantle region underneath a back-arc basin before tectonic incorporation in the Korydallos mélange. Two compositionally different chromitite pods are recognized in the studied serpentinite fragment, a Cr-rich chromitite and a high-Al chromitite, which have been ascribed to crystallization from a single, progressively differentiating MORB/IAT melt. Although both pods are fully serpentinized only the Al-rich one shows signs of limited Cr-spinel replacement by an opaque spinel phase and clinochlore across grain boundaries and fractures. Modification of the ore-making Cr-spinel is uneven among the Al-rich chromitite specimens. Textural features such as olivine replacement by clinochlore and clinochlore disruption by serpentine indicate that Cr-spinel alteration is not apparently related to serpentinization. From the unaltered Cr-spinel cores to their reworked boundaries the Al2O3 and MgO abundances decrease, being mainly compensated by FeOt and Cr2O3 increases. Such compositional variations are suggestive of restricted ferrian chromite (and minor magnetite) substitution for Cr-spinel during a short-lived but relatively intense, low amphibolite facies metamorphic episode (temperature: 400–700 °C). The presence of tremolite and clinochlore in the interstitial groundmass of the high-Al chromitite and their absence from the Cr-rich chromitite matrix imply that after chromitite formation a small volume of a high temperature, post-magmatic fluid reacted with Cr-spinel, triggering its alteration.

Opis:
The mafic-ultramafic rocks of the Gabal El-Degheimi area, Central Eastern Desert of Egypt, are parts of an ophiolitic section. The ophiolitic rocks are dismembered and tectonically enclosed within, or thrust over, island arc assemblages. Serpentinites, altered slices of the upper mantle, represent a distinctive lithology of the dismembered ophiolites. Some portions of the serpentinized rocks contain fresh relicts of primary minerals such as chromian spinel and olivine. The abundance of bastite and mesh textures suggests harzburgite and dunite protoliths, respectively, for these serpentinites. Some fresh cores of chromian spinel are rimmed by ferritchromite and Cr-magnetite. The development of alteration rims around chromian spinel cores indicates their formation during prograde alteration and under oxidizing conditions during lower amphibolite facies metamorphism. Fresh chromian spinels are characterized by high contents of Cr2O3 (48.92–56.74 wt. %), Al2O3 (10.29–20.08wt. %), FeO (16.24–28.46 wt. %) and MgO (4.89–14.02 wt. %), and very low TiO2 contents (<0.16 wt. %). The analyzed fresh chromian spinels have high Cr# (0.62–0.79) characteristic of spinels in mantle peridotite that has undergone some degree of partial melting. The data presented here suggest that the mantle peridotites of the Gabal El-Degheimi area are similar to forearc peridotites of suprasubduction zone environments.

Opis:
In this study, some types of composites consisting of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and spinel oxide (Co, Ni)3 O4  were synthesized by simple evaporation method. These composites were characterized by UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, X-rays diffraction(XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and specific surface area(SBET ). The photocatalytic activity of the prepared composites was investigated by the following removal of Bismarck brown G (BBG) dye from its aqueous solutions. The obtained results showed that using MWCNTs in combination with spinel oxide to produced composites (spinel/MWCNTs) which succeeded in increasing the activity of spinel oxide and exhibited higher photocatalytic activity than spinel oxide alone. Also it was found that, multiwalled carbon nanotubes were successful in increasing the adsorption and improving the activity of photocatalytic degradation of Bismarck brown G dye(BBG). The obtained results showed that spinel/MWCNTs was more active in dye removal in comparison with each of spinel oxide and MWCNTs alone under the same reaction conditions. Also band gap energies for the prepared composites showed lower values in comparison with neat spinel. This point represents a promising observation as these composites can be excited using a lower energy radiation sources.

Opis:
The present paper describes two compound chondrules labelled panda and chevron, discovered in the Baszkówka meteorite. Optical microscope, electron microscope and electron microprobe studies revealed an unusual mineral composition and fabric. Both chondrules include "primary" and "secondary" components. The panda and chevron chondrules have apparent diameters of ~0.86 and ~0.54 mm respectively with spinel dominant in primary components and olivine-plagioclase in secondary components overlain by thin microcrystalline rims. Euhedral or subhedral Mg, Fe2+/Al, Cr-spinel crystals from the panda's primary component (zoned, cavernous or homogeneous) were not found in Mg-Fe chondrules in Baszkówka, where Cr occurs exclusively as chromite. Olivine crystals from panda's primary (Fa27.1) and secondary (Fa26.5) component have similar compositions to those from panda's rim (Fa26.4) and comparable to olivine from other Baszkówka Mg-Fe chondrules (average ~Fa25.7). The Ca-plagioclase laths from the groundmass of panda's primary component has an extremely variable composition (~An49 to ~An60), evidently more calcic than those in other chondrules of the meteorite (mean ~An13). The primary components of the two spinel-bearing chondrules may have been formed in a fireball generated by powerful impact during early accretion of a protoplanet. After crystallisation the spinel crystals were abraded and polished, probably during rapid flight through a dense cloud of interplanetary dust. The moderately reducing conditions of the hypothetical fire ball were replaced by a more reducing environment during the condensation of the rims of both chondrules.

Cr-spinel is a relatively wide spread accessory mineral in the Mesozoic ophiolites of the Western Carpathians (mainly in the Meliata Unit) and in the Penninic Unit (Rechnitz tectonic window group). Cr-spinel chemical composition in both these occurrences (Meliaticum, Penninicum) shows the lherzolitic character of the original ultrabasites. It was found impossible to distinguish the source rocks (peridotites) of these two oceanic domains on the basis of the chemical composition of the Cr-spinels. Many Cr-spinels from both tectonic units are af fected by various levels of alter ation (in general, decrease of Al2O3, Cr2O3, MgO, enrichment in FeO, Fe2O3, SiO2, locally also in MnO and ZnO).

The mineral composition of the Baszkówka meteorite comprises: olivine, pyroxenes, plagioclase, Fe,Ni metal, troilite and chromite with minor chlorapatite, whitlockite, magnetite, haematite, spinel, idaite, calcite and native Cu. A rare variety of spinel (picotite), probably the oldest among the minerals of Baszkówka, was identified in the only two chondrules named: panda and chevron. The composition of the olivine (Fa 26.2š1.8 wt.%) and the high degree of chondrite homogenisation, a result of thermal metamorphism, are consistent with earlier results and indicate the L5 group. No distinct shock effects were observed in Baszkówka, classified as S1. Troilite-Fe,Ni and Fe,Ni metal lumps are defined and interpreted as molten planetesimals impact splashes.

Unusual deposits formed by corundum are described from two separate pegmatitic veins in the Hafafit-Nugrus area of the South Eastern Desert of Egypt. Other related minerals are described too. The vein-type of corundum at Locality 1 (Vein 1) crosscuts through exposed rocks of an ophiolitic mélange, whereas at Locality 2 (Vein 2), it crosscuts through exposed serpentinised ultramafic rocks. The main minerals in Vein 1 are plagioclase, corundum, grossular, phlogopite, muscovite and clinochlore, while almandine, xenotime-(Y), allanite-(Ce), zircon, Cr-rich spinel, apatite, titanite, fergusonite-(Y), meta-ankoleite, U-rich thorite (uranothorite), carbonate and illite are the accessories. In Vein 2, the main minerals are plagioclase, corundum, phlogopite and chlorite, while clinochlore, euxenite-(Y), Nb-rich rutile, almandine, xenotime-(Y), allanite-(Ce), zircon, spinel, apatite, titanite, kasolite, dickite, illite, carbonate, antigorite and talc are accessories. The two types of corundum veins differ in their concentrations of Th, U, Zr, Nb, Ta, REE, Y and Li in wholerock compositions. Field observations, mineralogy and chemical analyses of samples from the two veins of corundum deposits, as well as concentrations of chromophore elements in corundum crystals, suggest metasomatic origins. The present study suggests that the two types of corundum veins formed at different ages from different residual magmas that underwent in-situ hybridisation with the host rocks.

Opis:
Spinel chromowy często wykazuje strefowość optyczną i geochemiczną. Od jądra do brzegów można zaobserwować trzy strefy: wewnętrzne jądro o pierwotnym składzie spinelu chromowego; wąską strefę ferrochromitu bogatego w Cr; zewnętrzną strefę magnetytową. Strefowość spinelu chromowego jest interpretowana bardziej jako wynik serpentynizacji niż procesów magmowych czy metamorficznych. Dane geochemiczne dla chromitu i spinelu chromowego przedstawiono tabelarycznie. Zaobserwowano dwa trendy w odniesieniu do spinelu chromowego. Pierwszy przedstawia redystrybucję kationów trójwartościowych, gdzie Cr2O3 i Al2O3 zmniejszają się od pierwszej strefy do trzeciej. Drugi trend wskazuje na wzrost kationów Fe2O3 of strefy pierwszej do trzeciej. W spinelu chromowym znaleziono nieliczne inkluzje siarczków Ni i Cu, niestety zbyt małe do analiz EPMA.
The chromian spinel of the Gogołów–Jordanów Massif, southwestern Poland, is hosted by a serpentinized peridotite that builds a part of the Ślęża ophiolite complex. The chemical character of the chromian spinel indicates that the ophiolitic rocks were derived from depleted mantle peridotite of harzburgite and subordinate dunite compositions. The mantle rocks were initially formed at a mid-oceanic ridge and subsequently thrust at a supra-subduction zone. The chromian spinel frequently displays optical and geochemical zoning. Three zones can be identified from core to edge: inner core representing the original composition of the chromian spinel; narrow Cr-rich ferrichromit zone; and outer – magnetite zone. The chromian spinel zonation is interpreted to be a result of serpentinization rather than magmatic or metamorphic processes. Geochemical data obtained from the chromitite and chromian spinel have been shown in a table. Two trends were achieved considering the chromian spinel. The first trend shows redistribution of trivalent cations, where Cr2O3 and Al2O3 diminishes from the first zone up to the third zone and the second trend indicates Fe2O3 cations that increase from the first zone up to the third zone. Few Ni and Cu sulfide inclusions were found in the chromian spinel, too small to take EPMA data.

A Mössbauer effect in hercynite obtained by the arc-melting method indicated the cations distribution in the spinel structure among the tetrahedral and octahedral interstices. The presence of Fe2+ ions was detected in both tetrahedral and octahedral sites while Fe3+ ions occupied only the octahedral interstices. The approximate formula of the obtained iron-aluminate spinel was as follows (Fe2+ 0.77Al3+0.23)(Fe3+0.07Fe2+0.05Al0.88)2O4.

The study conducted in the granodiorite quarry at Łażany (Strzegom–Sobótka granitoid massif, Sudetes, Poland) identified spinel crystals within a marble interlayer contained in hornfels. Spinel occurs in the form of perfect octahedrons of violet color. The crystals reach a size of up to 2 mm, but typically are much smaller. The hornfels zone with a calcsilicate rock and a marble inlayer is about a dozen meters thick and most probably comes from the metamorphic cover of the Strzegom batholith. Semi-quantitative analyses of spinel were performed. In addition, chondrodite-like or monticellite-like minerals and vesuvianite have been found together with the spinel.

Opis:
Oxygen isotopic compositions of two picotite-bearing chondrules from Baszkówka L5(S1) equilibrated ordinary chondrite have been determined by secondary ion mass spectrometry. The O-isotopic compositions of the minerals in the picotite-bearing chondrules are slightly more 16O-rich than the bulk O-isotopic composition of Baszkówka. The petrological properties and the O-isotopic compositions of these chondrules suggest that they have closer relationship to ferromagnesian chondrules than CAIs. The 16O-enrichment of the picotite-bearing chondrules may result from incomplete O exchange reaction between 16O-rich chondrule precursors and the 16O-poor solar nebular gas. This implies that the picotite-bearing chondrules are more primitive than ordinary ferromagnesian chondrules in Baszkówka. The O-isotopic compositions of the minerals in one of these chondrules relate to the crystallization sequence. These O-isotopic variations of minerals within the chondrule may result from incomplete O exchange between the chondrule melt droplet and the nebular gas. The heterogeneity of the O-isotopic composition in Baszkówka indicates that Baszkówka has not been homogenized completely during thermal metamorphism and/or secondary alteration.

Opis:
Detrital chromian spinels in sedimentary rocks provide much information concerning the tectonics of their parental ultrabasic rocks. Chromian spinels occurring in the Eocene to Oligocene depos its from the Magura Nappe were exam i ned to provide some constraints on the history of the Magura Basin. The Magura Nappe is a part of the Flysch Belt belonging to the External Western Carpathians. The Magura Nappe is separated by a narrow zone associated with the Pieniny Klippen Belt and is divided into three principal tectono-lithofacies units (from the S to N): the Krynica, Bystrica and Rača units. Cr-spinel is a common accessory mineral (2.3-5.9 vol% of heavy mineral spectra) in the siliciclastic rocks of the Rača and Krynica units. In terms of texture and chemical composition, two types of Cr-spinels were recognized: unaltered and altered. Unaltered spinels were found to contain silicate inclusions such as chromio-pargasite, enstatite, diopside, pargasite, plagioclase and olivine (forsterite). The chromian spinels show wide variations in compositional parameters such as Cr# (0.3-0.7), Mg# (0.3-0.7), TiO2 (<0.03-1.9 wt.%) and Fe2+/Fe3+ (2.5-13) whereas the differences between the Rača and Krynica units are in- significant. These parameters suggest a peridotitic and volcanic origin of the spinels, respectively. The ophiolite source consisting of harzburgitic mantle peridotites was developed mainly in a supra-subduction zone setting; volcanic spinels indicate an origin in mid-ocean ridge basalts, back-arc basin basalts and sporadically in ocean-island basalts. Concerning their geochem i cal features, we propose that during the Eocene to Early Oligocene, the ophiolitic detritus in the eastern part of the Magura Basin deposits may have been derived from a source area located in the Fore-Marmarosh Suture Zone (Eastern Carpathians) that is considered an equivalent of the Black Flysch and Ceahlau units. Some Cr-spinels found in the Eocene sedimentary successions may have resedimented from older Late Cretaceous-Paleocene formations of the Magura Unit, which are considered as reworked sedimentary material from the Pieniny Klippen Belt.

Opis:
Throughout the Cretaceous, Tethyan oceanic branches gradually closed, and various ophiolites became obducted and eroded. Their remnants, however, provide an abundance of exotic clasts of unknown origin. Sandstone samples from the oldest, Albian exotics-bearing strata of the Pieniny Klippen Belt and Central Western Carpathians were analysed for heavy minerals. These samples were dominated by a high content of chrome-spinels, zircon, tourmaline, apatite and rutile. Titanite, kyanite, monazite, epidote, sillimanite and staurolite were much less abundant. Garnet was generally also rare; however, it was locally common, as were blue amphiboles, pyroxenes and kyanite. The spinels found in the samples were predominantly derived from harzburgites (supra-subduction peridotites and volcanic rocks). The blue amphiboles represented glaucophanes to ferroglaucophanes, and were derived from HP/LT metabasites. Pyroxenes (enstatite, less commonly augite and diopside) most likely came from coeval volcanics. Most of the tourmalines were derived from metasedimentary rocks and locally from granitoids. Furthermore, some have a complex zonation with two phases of tourmaline, or tourmaline intergrown with quartz. These were likely derived from ophiolitic sources. The results from our analysis indicate a dominance of ophiolites and older sediments with local input of continental crust metamorphic rocks. A resulting palaeogeographic reconstruction involves secondary doubling of the Neotethys suture zone and its lateral shift north of the Central Western Carpathians, which formed a common source for exotics in the Pieniny Klippen Belt and the Central Western Carpathians.
