Opis:
Reactive materials (RMs) or impact-initiated materials have received much attention as a class of energetic materials in recent years. To assess the influence of processing techniques on mechanical properties and impact initiation behaviors of an Al-PTFE reactive material, quasi -static compression tests and drop-weight tests were performed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to identify the characteristics of the interior microstructures of the Al-PTFE samples. A sintering process was found to transform Al-PTFE from a brittle to a ductile material with an increased elasticity modulus (from 108-160 MPa to 256-336 MPa) and yield stress (from 12-16 MPa to 19-20 MPa). Increasing the molding pressure from 36 MPa to 182 MPa increased the elastic modulus of all Al-PTFE samples and also the yield stress of unsintered ones. Unsintered samples in general required less energy to initiate than sintered ones. As the molding pressure increased, the impact initiation energy for sintered Al-PTFE fell from 96 J to 68 J, whereas the initiation energy for unsintered Al-PTFE rose from 68 J to 85 J. PTFE nanofiber networks observed in sintered samples formed under the higher molding pressures could contribute to the opposite trends observed in the impact initiation energy of unsintered and sintered Al-PTFE samples.

Opis:
In this paper were conducted virtual tests to assess the impact of geometry changes on the response of metallic hexagonal honeycomb structures to applied loadings. The lateral compressive stress state was taken into consideration. The material properties used to build numerical models were assessed in laboratory tests of aluminium alloy 7075. The modelling at meso-scale level allow to comprehensive study of honeycomb internal structure. The changes of honeycomb geometry elements such as: fillets radius of the cell edges in the vicinity of hexagonal vertexes, wall thickness were considered. The computations were conducted by using finite element method with application of the ABAQUS finite element method environment. Elaborated numerical models allowed to demonstrate sensitivity of honeycomb structures damage process response to geometry element changes. They are a proper tools to perform optimization of the honeycomb structures. They will be also helpful in designing process of modern constructions build up of the considered composite constituents in various branches of industry. Moreover, the obtained results can be used as a guide for engineers. Conducted virtual tests lead to conclusion that simplification of the models of internal honeycomb structure which have become commonplace among both engineers and scientist can lead to inaccurate results.

Opis:
Purpose: The study of axial loading is essential to determine the properties of intervertebral disc. The objectives of this work are (1) to quantify the mechanical properties of porcine lumbar intervertebral discs under static and cyclic compressive loading, and (2) to determine the parameters of a five-parameter rheological model for porcine and compare them with those obtained for human lumbar intervertebral discs. Methods: Thus, the porcine lumbar motion segments were subjected to quasi-static and dynamic compression tests. The quasi-static tests were used to obtain the static stiffness coefficient at different strain rates, while the data from the cyclic compressive tests were used to both determine the dynamic stiffness coefficient and to be fitted in a 5-parameter model, in order to simulate the creep response of the porcine intervertebral discs. Results: The results demonstrated that dynamic stiffness coefficient of porcine discs is between four and ten times higher than the static stiffness coefficient, depending on load applied. The parameters of the rheological model suggested a low permeability of nucleus and endplate during the fast response of porcine discs. In addition, the fast response in terms of displacement is four times higher than those documented for human discs. Conclusions: This study revealed that care must be taken on the comparison between porcine and human discs, since they present different behaviour under quasi-static and dynamic compressive loading.
