Opis:
A roman à clef, where the presence of fictional and nonfictional elements is obvious, is a powerful framework for literary portraits of the author’s contemporaries. The degree of deformation, be it glamorizing or devaluing, depends on several factors, among which the pleasure of playing hide and seek is not the least. Each reference, even a demeaning one, brings out of the shadow of the past both prominent and background characters, as well as important events, all from the author’s point of view. Through this display, an image of a very complex environment emerges, where the worst rubs shoulders with the best, and where the constraints of daily life or loyalty to ideals impose difficult choices with very serious consequences. The author observes the sociological phenomena that affect her environment and, while making sharp criticisms, seeks to find a remedy for the wound that destroys Art and the Artist.

Tekst poświęcony jest początkom kariery twórczej jednego z najsłynniejszych współczesnych pisarzy, ściśle związanego z Olsztynem – Mariusza Sieniewicza. Razem z grupą współpracowników stworzył on pismo literacko-artystyczne „Portret”, gdzie pełnił stanowisko redaktora naczelnego (1995–2002). Pismo wpłynęło na rozwój lokalnej, i po części ogólnopolskiej, sceny twórczej, zaś Sieniewicz był głównym pomysłodawcą działań i animatorem kultury.

Opis:
The aim of the paper is to examine whether their profession is a source of satisfaction for Polish accountants. The study used the results of a nationwide survey by the accountants association in Poland “2017 accountants’ portrait”. As it results from more than 2,500 responses by accountants, over three quarters of respondents assess their own job satisfaction highly. The image of an accountant satisfied with their job does not match the stereotypical perception of this profession. The respondents’ answers indicate that the level of satisfaction is related to the position held and the remuneration received. The perception of accountants as “generators of additional costs” or “business impediments” is also significant, which can lower satisfaction with working in accounting. The paper employs methods of a source analysis and a diagnostic survey. The data collected in the survey was analysed using simple statistical methods and was appropriately presented.

Opis:
This article offers an interpretation of Cyprian Norwid’s self-portrait Ipse ipsum created in 1857 in Paris. Given its intriguing approach, references to the poet’s biography and literary works, as well as rich symbolism, the drawing occupies a particular place in the collection of over 20 cartoon self-portraits by the author of Promethidion. Its presentation is accompanied by an outline of its turbulent history and a brief literature overview. The circumstances in which it was drawn prove crucial for the understanding of Norwid’s approach to his own image. Selfcreation is adopted as the pivotal perspective in the light of which the self-portrait is interpreted as an image presenting the author of Vade-mecum as an artist, an emigrant, and a pilgrim, with the historical, biographical, and literary contexts playing important roles in all three representations. The poems Czy podam się o amnestię [Shall I Request Amnesty] and Pielgrzym [The Pilgrim] shed some extra light on the drawing of Norwid standing on the map of the world and surrounded by barking dogs, allowing us to search for deeper meanings in the poet’s spiritual profile.

Opis:
The text emphasizes the difference between two artistic approaches. The first one of them is rare and comprises various kinds of artistic games with death undertaken by the artists, whereas the second one depends on playing with the subject of death, where death plays the part of an „embellishment” or some kind of attraction, which should draw the attention of the viewer. The text concentrates on such artistic realizations, in which the first of the mentioned approaches is visible. The selected „games with death” in the works by, among others, K. Kozyra, A. Szapocznikow, R. Opałka and Ch. Boltanski, are analysed. The analyses make use of theoretical works by, among others, H.G. Gadamer, P. Ariès, H. Belting, R. Barthes and G. Steiner.

The article analyzes a series of Adam Zagajewski’s self-portraits against the backdrop of his essays as well as a variety of contemporary theories, especially Paul de Man’s deconstruction and Michel Foucault’s spirituality philosophy. According to this analysis, Zagajewski’s self-portraits are approaching the kind of spiritual exercises described by Pierre Hadot: Zagajewski uses them to try to rebuild his personality, having designed its richer and more mature version, partly following the example of Zagajewski’s masters, such as Józef Czapski. Understood in this way, Zagajewski’s works contain a surprisingly wealthy theoretical substance, heretofore unrecognized by commentators.

The article discusses the specificity of character pieces (the journalistic genre for the presentation and recommendation of a person) in the context of the rhetorical triad. Logos, ethos and pathos are three ways of shaping an argument which in a character piece have a persuasive impact on the reader by influencing his intellect, will and emotions. In journalistic practice, this means using facts and commanding direct or indirect inference in relation to the axiology of moral attitudes, as well as showing and engendering feelings, states of emotion and stimulating the imagination. The author discusses these actions based on selected journalistic texts from the magazines „Polityka”, „Gazeta Wyborcza”, „Press” and „Newsweek Polska”.

Double Index. The Self-Shadow in American Photography of the Second Half of the 20th Century

Opis:
The article focuses on the notion of the image of self-shadow in American photography in the second half of the twentieth century, understood as a shadow silhouette of the creator captured in a photograph. The two main problems that concern the author’s research are the lack of current, theoretical study on the problem of shadow in the history of photography from the perspective of art history (V. Stoichita, R. Casati, P. Cavanagh, H. Kanaan) and the lack of the definition of the phenomenon of self-shadow and its possible types in self-portraiture. The author’s proposition of a definition of self-shadow is based on selected photographs by four artists whose works touch upon the problem of shadow in the context of relations between the “self” and the “other” (Lee Friedlander), race and subjective invisibility (Shawn W. Walker), mask and the other-self (Andy Warhol), and the intimate recording of identity (Nan Goldin). In her analyses, the author discusses the problem of the hybrid ontology of the shadow, which is both visible and visual. In this understanding, the shadow not only refers to a physical body, present “here and now” but more importantly evokes a sense of presence, even when the artist’s body is absent in the picture. The double index refers to the image leaving its mark both in reality and on light-sensitive paper. The rudimentary, vitalistic relation linking the human body with its shadow is only a starting point for analyses of the complexity of its status and symbolism. The concepts framing Andy Warhol’s Polaroid are twinning, the mask, and the Jungian theory of the shadow archetype. To discuss the self-portrait of Shawn W. Walker, the author applies the literary-philosophical concept of invisibility based on writings from Black existentialists (W.E.B. Du Bois, F. Fanon, R. Ellison). The analyses of Lee Friedlander’s photograph have been based on the psychological distinction between the figures of the “self” and the “other”. The closing concepts that frame Nan Goldin’s self-portrait are the haptic thinking subject (M. Smolińska) and the notion of a diary. The critical apparatus of the study is supplemented by contemporary analyses of the myth of Narcissus, the mythical origins of the self-portrait, and the notion of the index (after R. Krauss, M. Michałowska, M.A. Doane).

This article shows the most important and the most powerful images of witches in the literature of Ancient Rome. The problem of magic and magic practitioners was very common in antiquity. People believed that during the night black magic was practiced, magic which was prohibited by law and the gods, and that harmed living creatures and even caused their death. Interestingly, it was women who predominantly practiced magic in antiquity. Needless to say, they were portrayed in an extremely negative way: witches were ugly, old and lascivious, but at the same time powerful and frightening. It is no wonder that the writers of Ancient Rome willingly touched upon the topic of spells, and presented witches in two ways: either to frighten or amuse the reader. Looking at the works of Apuleius, Lucan, Petronius and Horace, we in the first place see that both modes of representations were equally popular. We also realize how popular this motif was and how often it had been used and transformed.

Opis:
The main focus of this article is to find an image of the woman, provided by an ekphrastic work by Andrea Camilleri, La ripetizione, corresponding to a famous painting by Renato Guttuso, La Vucciria. The duality of the perception of the woman, in the rich and multi-millennial Sicilian culture, is reflected in the writer’s narrative through a clash of roles and an inversion of the positions commonly assigned to individuals by society. The analysis highlights the mutual exchange of glazes, defined by Laura Mulvey as “male” and “female,” and the installation within the framework of the observer reflected by the mirror, as proposed by Michel Foucault. The reflections of psychoanalysts, in particular Julia Kristeva and Melanie Klein, provide some explanations regarding the coexistence of the cult of the mother with the desire for matricide. According to these theories, the figure of the male child remains forever burdened by an inconsolable sense of guilt and frustration. Consequently, the male protagonists of Camilleri are tormented by a terror of and a disdain for the female body. In fact, their domination proves to be only illusory: the image of the woman is overwhelming and threatening like that of Trinacria, the mistress of Sicily. Finally, the male, fighting for his own identity, commits matricide and the Medusa is beheaded.

Wojciech Jagielski has been presented in the article as a successor to Ryszard Kapuściński’s accomplishments in the genre of literary nonfiction. Both authors continue the tradition of nonfiction writing which started after the First World War in Poland and which displayed their fascination with human history. They both share the technique of using parallels and analogies, which for Jagielski serves the purpose of presenting culturally and historically remote spaces. Another key characteristic of Jagielski’s oeuvre, namely creating complex psychological portraits of the people in power, also tends to utilize the aforementioned technique. In consequence, Jagielski’s artistic development often leads him out onto the territory of yet another tradition of nonfiction writing, the one based on social observation.
