Opis:
The paper describes the first attempts at the sprinkler irrigation of plants in Poland which took place in the Kujawy and Wielkopolska Region more than a hundred years ago – at the early 20th century. The first original sprinkler irrigation machine was designed and the used by Mr Władysław Szczepkowski. The sprinkler irrigation machine he constructed in 1911, after earlier a few year trials (at Łęg, the Śrem county, the Poznań Province) was the first sprinkler irrigation machine built at such a large scale in Europe. The system developed by Szczepkowski found many followers in Germany, France, England and the USA. Szczepkowski’s sprinkler irrigation machine became a prototype for many later designs, e.g. the irrigation machines applied today rolled sprinkling pipelines.

Ważną rolę w oszczędności wody zużywanej do nawodnień mogą odegrać systemy nawadniania. W artykule opisano wybrane zraszacze o szerokim zakresie funkcyjności, przeznaczone do nawadniania ogrodów, pól golfowych i dużych terenów zieleni. Parametry techniczne są kompatybilne z prawie wszystkimi istniejącymi systemami sterującymi automatyką nawadniania.
Water conditions are one of the most volatile components of the soil environment. Water is an essential factor that determines the growth and development of plants and soil microorganisms to life and a number of processes in the soil. Various soils retain different moisture, although the same precipitation, it depends on the porosity and the retention capacity of soil. Irrigation systems can play an important role in saving water used for irrigation. The article describes some of the sprinklers with a wide range of functionality designed to irrigate the gardens, golf courses and large green areas. Technical data are compatible with almost all existing automatic irrigation control systems.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of 20-year-long irrigation of permanent grasslands with potato starch and brewery wastewater on the botanical composition of sward, yield and nutritional value of hay. The experiment was conducted in the center for wastewater treatment and use in Mątwica-Kupiski (668 ha), which has been equipped with facilities for flood irrigation with wastewater since 1965. Potato starch and brewery effluents were mixed in a storage reservoir at a ratio of 1:0.4. Meadow sward was irrigated with wastewater in autumn and after the first harvest, at an annual dose of 200 – 300 mm. On average, wastewater contained (mg dm-3): N – 223, P – 48, K – 285, Ca – 80, Mg – 46, Na – 68. Before the first harvest in 1998, 2003, 2008, 2013 and 2018, the floristic composition of meadow sward was determined on an 11-degree scale by the Klapp method. Yield was determined in trial plots. Based on the percentage of dominant species (above 20% share of the sward), several floristic types of grassland communities were identified. Herbage samples were collected for detailed botanical and chemical analyses according to the floristic composition of the identified grassland communities. Chemical analyses of plant material were performed by standard methods. Longterm irrigation of meadow sward with wastewater contributed to the development of agronomically important plant communities, except for the Agropyron repens community in the western part of the research site. The yield of grassland irrigated with wastewater, regardless of a floristic type, was 2- to 3-fold higher than the yield of non-irrigated grassland. Hay harveste in wastewater-irrigated meadows met the crude fiber, ash and fat requirements of animals. The total protein content of hay remained within the recommended limits for high-quality fodder, except for the Alopecurus pratensis + Agropyron repens community.

One of the ways to reduce the water consumption by plants while maintaining their proper quality is to use substances that limit excessive transpiration. Three preparations at following concentrations: Moisturin (10%), Root-Zone (4.5%) and Vapor Gard (1%), were used in the experiment. Moisturin and Vapor Gard were applied in the form of a single spray, and Root-Zone as a single irrigation in mid July. The aim of the research was to assess the effect of several anti-transpirants on some biometric features of the ‘Tardiva’ panicled hydrangea depending on the frequency of irrigation. The following parameters were measured: area, perimeter, width and length of leaf blade, length and width of inflorescences, and the diameter of shoots. Treatment of H. paniculata cv. ‘Tardiva’ with Root-Zone and Moisturin anti-transpirants with a single irrigation every other day allows to reduce the water consumption and obtain shrubs of a quality comparable with plants irrigated twice a day. The use of Moisturin with a twice daily irrigation positively affected the length and width of inflorescences.

Opis:
In the years 2005–2007, research work on the influence of surface and subsurface drip irrigation on the yield and quality of roots of parsley grown on ridges and on flat ground was carried out. Irrigation water was supplied via drip lines, which in subsurface irrigation were placed at a depth of 50 mm below the surface of the ridges, along the centreline between two rows of plants. In the case of surface irrigation, the drip lines were placed on the surface of the ridges between two rows of plants. Irrigation started when soil water potential was between -30 and -40 kPa. Nitrogen fertilizers (100 kg⋅ha-1) were applied in two doses. The first dose was applied pre-plant, while the second one was delivered by fertigation. In the control treatment without irrigation, the second dose of nitrogen was applied by broadcasting. Both surface and subsurface irrigation used in the cultivation on ridges and on flat ground had a significant effect on the marketable yield of parsley roots. However, no significant differences in the yield between surface and subsurface drip irrigation were found. The yield of non-marketable parsley roots in flat cultivation was twice as high as that in ridge cultivation. Parsley plants cultivated on ridges produced significantly longer, better-shaped storage roots compared to those cultivated on flat ground. Surface and subsurface drip irrigation significantly decreased the total N and K content in parsley roots.
Nawadnianie powierzchniowe i wgłębne powodowało istotny spadek zawartości azotu ogólnego i potasu w korzeniach pietruszki.

The study has been carried out at two experimental sites. It aims to assess the impact of the reuse of raw wastewater, purified and diluted with conventional water on the physicochemical quality of soils compared to irrigated soils with conventional drilled water and non-irrigated soil. The obtained results show that the electrical conductivity EC and sodium gradually increase in all the plots irrigated with wastewater. Additionally, a slight increase in the pH levels at the first site and a slight decrease in the second site was seen, but at both sites the soils remained alkaline. The infiltration rate of water slide decreases in relation to the amount of irrigation, especially in plots irrigated by raw and treated wastewater. For the same plots, the values of organic matter increased, and the values obtained for the exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) became high in the third year and reached 17.0% and 16.7% respectively.

The analyzed wastewater contained on average (mg dm-3): N – 223, P – 48, K – 285, Ca – 80, Mg – 46 and Na – 68. The floristic composition of meadow sward was determined before the first harvest in 1998, 2003, 2008, 2013 and 2018, while the yield was determined on trial plots. Five major floristic types of grassland communities were identified based on the percentage of dominant species (above 20% share of the sward). Herbage samples were collected for botanical-gravimetric and chemical analyses. Soil samples were collected in 1991 and 2018. Chemical analyses of soil and plant material were performed by standard methods. The following floristic types of grassland communities developed: Alopecurus pratensis (Ap), Arrhenatherum elatius (Ae), Dactylis glomerata + Festuca rubra (Dg+Fr), and Poa pratensis + Dactylis glomerata (Pp+Dg), Phalaris arundinacea + Glyceria maxima (Pha+Gm), and the Festuca rubra + Anthoxanthum odoratum (Fr+Ao) community in the control treatment (non-irrigated grassland). The content of P, K, Fe, Cu, Mn and Zn increased, whereas the content of Ca, Mg and Na, and pH levels decreased in the analyzed soils. Regardless of the floristic type of sward, the yield of grassland irrigated with wastewater was significantly (1.6 to 2.8-fold) higher than the yield of non-irrigated grassland. Hay harvested from wastewater-irrigated meadows met the nutrient requirements of animals in terms of crude fiber, ash and fat, excluding total protein.

High yields with low costs require that sugar beets be kept free of weeds, during critical periods, using labor or chemical treatments. Since the critical periods for this crop in Castilla – La Mancha (Spain) are unknown, the first goal of this study was to determine the effect of early and late competition on yield. The second goal was to determine the critical periods, while taking into consideration the semiarid climatic conditions of this region. Two irrigation farms located in the province of Albacete are dedicated to sugar beet cultivation. These two farms were chosen to carry out the tests March (140,000–150,000 seeds ∙ ha–1) and harvested in October. Two simultaneous and complementary experiments were carried out in each year and farm. Two scenarios were considered with eight different treatments each. In the first one (With Weeds Until – WWU), plots were infested by weeds up to a certain date. In the second one (Free of Weeds Until – FWU), plots were kept free of weeds up to a certain date. For each test, a randomised experimental blocked field was designed and there were four repetitions, each of them containing eight elemental plots (12 m2). Each plot was weeded by hand or weeds were left to grow till a definite date. The results indicated that a 1% loss of yield was reached in the early competition after 14 days, while a loss of 5% was reached after a period of 41 days after it was infested. The results also indicated that in late competition, if a crop is kept clean for 124 days and it is infested afterwards, a 1% loss is reached. However, the loss increases to 5% if the plot is kept clean for 111 days. For a 1% loss the critical period is 110 days and 70 days for a 5% loss.

During the studies conducted in the years 2004–2005, in the Experimental Farm „Felin” of the University of Life Sciences in Lublin we assessed the effect of irrigation and plant density upon the yield and selected technological features (mean weight of root and the occurrence of empty spaces) in a few currently grown celeriac cultivars. A significant influence of the examined factors upon the quantity and quality of celeriac yield was demonstrated. On average, for the study years, the yield of non-watered plants ranged from 34.7 to 48.8 t ha⁻¹ and the yield of watered plants – from 47.1 to 66.3 t ha⁻¹. The increased plant density from 37.0 thousand pcs. to 55.6 thousand pcs. ha⁻¹ enabled us to obtain greater yield of non-watered plants by 15.6%, and of watered plants – by 21.5%. The examined factors affected the mean weight of root in the assessed celeriac cultivar, the sizes of empty spaces occurring in them, as well as the participation of roots with empty spaces in the marketable yield.

In the climatic conditions of Poland the temporary lack of rainfall during the vegetation season, influenced on the water deficits in the top soil level. This situation can effect on the height and quality of yields in particular years. There is estimated that in the – so called – Large Valleys Region the water deficiency ranged 200-300 mm. Production of cucurbit’s vegetables in open field is strictly connected with thermal-rainfall conditions during the vegetation season. The optimal soil moisture is the very important factor for high and good quality yield. So, the production of the cucurbit plants should be connected with the irrigation installations. The aim of the study was to determine the influence of drip irrigation in cultivation of summer squash ‘Danka’ under light soil conditions. The trials were conducted in the years 2004 – 2006 at the experimental field in Kruszyn Krajeński near Bydgoszcz – on a soil of rye weak complex. The plot area for harvest was 9,1 m2. The irrigation rates were done on the base of soil water potential according to tensiometer indications. The irrigation was started when the soil water tension was – 0,04 MPa. The fruits of the summer squash were harvested in the technological maturity in the second decade of September in each year of the study. The single weight and number of the fruits as well as marketable yield from the unit area were estimated. In the pulp the dry matter, vitamin C, sugars and carotenoids content were determineted. It was found that drip irrigation significantly increased the marketable yield of fruits. The higher yield increases were detected in the years with lower rainfalls. The significant influence of drip irrigation on the content of vitamin C and sugars was stated. The dry matter and carotenoids content were higher in the fruits from the irrigated plots, but the difference was insignificant.
