    We study the relation between the concept of spine and the representation of orientable bordered 3-manifolds by Heegaard diagrams. As a consequence, we show that composing invertible non-amphicheiral knots yields examples of topologically different knot manifolds with isomorphic spines. These results are related to some questions listed in [9], [11] and recover the main theorem of [10] as a corollary. Finally, an application concerning knot manifolds of composite knots with h prime factors completes the paper.

    Background Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a musculoskeletal condition that often impairs the fitness to work. Our aim is to retrospectively evaluate the association between physical exposures in meat processing industry in Northern Italy and the CTS, taking into account non-occupational factors. Material and Methods A cross-sectional study was performed to include 434 workers (236 males, 198 females, 37.0±10.6 years old, working age: 12.6±10.8 years) from meat processing industries. Signs and symptoms were collected at the compulsory occupational medical surveillance. Occupational risk factors were assessed through a questionnaire and direct assessment by investigators. Adjusted odds ratios (ORadj) for factors of interest were estimated through binary logistic regression. Results Diagnosis of the CTS was reported for 61 out of 434 subjects (14.1%) for an incidence of 11.3/1000 person- years. In general, signs and symptoms for the CTS were associated with the following demographic factors: smoking history (OR = 1.909, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.107–3.293), previous traumas of the upper limb (OR = 3.533, 95% CI: 1.743–7.165), hypothyroidism status (OR = 7.897, 95% CI: 2.917–21.38) and, in the case of female participants only, previous pregnancies (OR = 2.807, 95% CI: 1.200–6.566) as well as a personal history of oral contraceptive therapy and/or steroidal replacement therapy (OR = 11.57, 95% CI: 4.689–28.56). The carpal tunnel syndrome cases were associated with the following occupational factors (> 4 h/day): forceful hand exertion (ORadj = 3.548, 95% CI: 1.379–9.131), repeated trauma of the hand (ORadj = 3.602, 95% CI: 1.248– 10.395), repeated movements of the wrist (ORadj = 2.561, 95% CI: 1.100–5.960). Conclusions Increasing levels of hand activity and force were associated with the increased CTS prevalence among participants. Recommendations have to be provided in order to reduce occupational exposure to these risk factors and improve medical surveillance. Med Pr 2017;68(2):199–209

    Objectives Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common nerve entrapment syndrome, which since the beginning of the seventies has been linked to the keyboard and visual display unit (VDU). The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence and personal factors associated with CTS in female VDU workers in Italy. Material and Methods Participants in this study were female adult subjects, working ≥ 20 h/week (N = 631, mean age 38.14±7.81 years, mean working age 12.9±7.24 years). Signs and symptoms were collected during compulsory occupational medical surveillance. The binary logistic regression was used to estimate adjusted odds ratios for the factors of interest. Results Diagnosis of CTS was reported in 48 cases (7.6%, 11 of them or 1.7% after a surgical correction) for the incidence of 5.94/1000 person-years. In general, signs and symptoms of CTS were associated with the following demographic factors: previous trauma of upper limb (adjusted odds ratio (ORa) = 8.093, 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.347–27.904), history (> 5 years) of oral contraceptives therapy/hormone replacement therapy (ORa = 3.77, 95% CI: 1.701–8.354) and cervical spine signs/symptoms (ORa = 4.565, 95% CI: 2.281–9.136). Conclusions The prevalence of CTS was similar to the estimates for the general population of Italy. Among personal risk factors, hormone therapy, previous trauma of the upper limb and signs/symptoms of the cervical spine appeared to be associated with a higher risk of CTS syndrome. Eventually, the results reinforce interpretation of CTS in VDU workers as a work-related musculoskeletal disorder rather than a classical occupational disease.     Comparative studies indicate that innovation activity in Poland is, in general, significantly below that of EU and in North-east it is below that of other parts of Poland. There is peripheral region with traditional structure of production and employment. The North-east remains one of the least innovative regions of Poland and en-larged EU. This is probably the result of the obsolete institutional setting, which doesn’t reflect the requirements of modern international competitiveness. It is the heritage of past times, where creation of the innovation system wasn’t considered a priority factor of economic development. Additionally, Poland is still undergoing intensive modernization of its technology capabilities. The capital and production structure are way outdated and don’t meet the demands of the international trade competition, most of all the non-price competition. That is why it seems that creating conditions for innovation system might become a crucial factors determining the nature and dynamics of development processes as well as influencing the North-east future innovation capability. Creating a new regional innovation structure and transfer of technologies should support modernization processes in companies and the creation of development opportunities for the national economy as a whole and especially in peripheral regions. Those processes will accelerate technological convergence of regions and the economy.

    El presente articulo es un intento de encontrar respuesta a la pregunta sobre el caracter periferico y minoritario de la literatura escrita en la lengua vasca, basandose en las propuestas teoricas desarrolladas por Itamar Even-Zohar en el marco de su teoria de los polisistemas, en las indagaciones realizadas acerca de las literaturas menores por Gilles Deleuze y Felix Guattari y tambien en las reflexiones sobre los sistemas literarios perifericos, hechas por Jon Kortazar. Despues de presentar brevemente la historia de la literatura vasca y las circunstancias politico-sociales que determinaron su desarrollo, se llega a la situacion actual en la que se encuentra dentro del sistema literario europeo y las perspectivas de futuro que se abren ante la ultima generacion de los creadores vascos. En el presente trabajo se muestra tambien la historia de la lengua vasca, el euskera, y las condiciones historicas de su desarrollo, dada la importancia que tuvo en el proceso de la formacion de la literatura eusquerica.

    The article presents various opinions and assessments of Polish society regarding membership in the European Union and its consequences. 2014 marks 10 years since countries from Central-Eastern Europe became a part of the European Union. It is a good opportunity for an afterthought on the role and place of the post-communist countries in today’s world order. The author of the article suggests that perspectives of post-colonial theories or the system-world dependence theory can be a useful tool to help understand the state of affairs in the region. It is also indicated by the research studies which demonstrate that the respondents notice a gap between Poland and the standards of Western European countries in all aspects of their lives. It does not only refer to the social sphere, but also to assess the institutional order or civic self-awareness. In spite of dif culties and crises in such countries as Greece or Portugal within the European Union, Polish society – as shown by the results of the author’s research studies – perceives further European integration to be a solution to its own problems.

    Choroby układu ruchu i obwodowego układu nerwowego wywołane sposobem wykonywania pracy są zaliczane do przeciążeniowych chorób skumulowanych mikrourazów, wynikających z chronicznego przeciążenia i/lub uszkodzenia określonych struktur układu nerwowo-mięśniowo-szkieletowego. Sposób wykonywania pracy, który predysponuje do ich rozwoju, cechuje się monotypią, tj. powtarzalnością ruchów przez istotną część zmiany roboczej. W pracy opisano 4 przypadki odwoławczego postępowania diagnostyczno-orzeczniczego kobiet z chorobami układu ruchu i obwodowego układu nerwowego, u których wykazano związek przyczynowo-skutkowy pomiędzy rozwojem schorzeń a sposobem wykonywania pracy. Ponowna szczegółowa analiza narażenia zawodowego oraz pogłębienie wywiadu zawodowego pozwoliły na ustalenie zawodowej etiologii schorzeń z uwzględnieniem istnienia czynników pozazawodowych czy też w związku z wykonywaniem pracy na rzadko spotykanych stanowiskach. Trudności orzecznicze w ocenie możliwości wystąpienia procesu chorobowego w związku z ekspozycją zawodową powoduje częste współistnienie czynników pozazawodowych predysponujących do powstania choroby wymienionej w wykazie chorób zawodowych, które powinny podlegać szczegółowej ocenie w toku postepowania prowadzonego w związku z podejrzeniem choroby zawodowej. Dwustopniowy system orzeczniczy dający możliwość ponownego badania pozwala na powtórną niezależną ocenę medyczną i dotyczącą narażenia zawodowego oraz na zweryfikowanie przedstawionych wcześniej wniosków.
    Work-related diseases of the musculoskeletal and the peripheral nervous system are classified as overload cumulative microtrauma diseases, resulting from chronic overload and/or damage of specific neuromusculoskeletal structures. Occupational activities which predispose to them are characterised by monotypy (repetition of movements during a significant part of the working shift). Authors described 4 cases of women with musculoskeletal and peripheral nervous system disorders qualified as occupational background just in the 2nd instance of medical certification. Detailed analysis of occupational exposure and medical interview with individual diagnostic approach allowed to determine the occupational etiology of diseases, regardless of non-occupational risk factors in some cases, even if the workstation was not common. Difficulties in estimating the probability of disease process induction on the background of occupational exposure are caused by frequent coexistence of non-occupational risk factors. The 2-tier system of certification provides an independent evaluation of medical history and occupational exposure.

    Exposure to phenol causes ultrastructural disorders in supporting and receptor cells in the peripheral segment of the olfactory organ of yellowfin (Cottocomephorus grewingkii) and in cells in peripheral blood of stone sculpins (Paracottus knerii), yellowfin and perch (Perca fluviatilis). Identical responses to phenol exposure in the blood cells were observed in endemic Lake Baikal fish and in nonendemic fish. Differences were found only in the rate and intensity of the recovery response. Fast activation of immune processes were found in the coastal nonendemic perch, but they were slow in the stone sculpin, a coastal endemic species.

    Do podstawowych cech współczesnej gospodarki należą zróżnicowanie przestrzenne i jej zmienność w czasie. Obserwuje się, że jedne regiony i kraje rozwijają się szybciej, inne wolniej. Ramy teoretyczne badania ich rozwoju określa koncepcja peryferyjności regionalnej. Nawiązując do tej koncepcji, w artykule poddano ocenie możliwości rozwoju województwa lubuskiego. W badaniach empirycznych uwzględniono 39 wskaźników diagnostycznych opisujących następujące grupy uwarunkowań: położenie geograficzne i system osadniczy, gospodarkę i jej strukturę, czynniki demograficzno-społeczne, infrastrukturę regionu. Wykorzystując dane za 2014 rok, przeprowadzono analizę rozwoju województwa na tle gospodarki polskiej z uwzględnieniem wybranych aspektów rozwoju obszarów wiejskich. Wyniki przeprowadzonych badań wskazują, że w wielu przypadkach województwo lubuskie charakteryzują procesy typowe dla regionów peryferyjnych.
    The basic features of the contemporary economy include spatial diversity and its variation in time. It can be observed that some regions and countries develop faster and others slower. The theoretical framework of research into their development is specified by the concept of regional peripherality. In line with this concept, the possibilities for development of Lubuskie Voivodeship were assessed in the article. There were 39 diagnostic indicators considered in empirical research, describing the following groups of determinants: geographical location and settlement system, economy and its structure, demographical and social factors as well as infrastructure of the region. With the use of the data for 2014, the analysis of the voivodeship development was carried out in relation to Polish economy. Selected aspects of development of rural areas were considered. The results of the research indicate that Lubuskie Voivodeship is in many cases characterized by processes typical for peripheral regions.
