Opis:
This article describes the bases of the acoustic emission analysis to make successful applications in the range of the tribological problems, especially at machinery slide journal bearings. Acoustic emission differs from ultrasonic testing, which actively probes the structure; Acoustic emission listens for emissions from active defects and is very sensitive to defect activity when a structure is loaded beyond its service load. During detecting and analysing the generated acoustic emission we earn information about the behaviour, state or quality of these acoustic emission sources. A lot of different sources are generating acoustic emission (e.g. corrosion processes, fluid friction, cracks, cutting processes). This paper shows the acoustic emission sources, the wave propagation, the mode conversion, the damping, the design of a typical transducer and the whole measurement chain. The piezoelectric disc, the "heart" of a typical acoustic emission transducer, converts the incoming mechanical wave into a corresponding electrical signal. Every transducer has its own characteristic, if this is unknown we can test it with difficult methods e.g. so called reciprocal method. On the end of this paper the signal parameters (burst-count, rise-time, signal-duration, signal peak amplitude, signal energy and root-mean-square) will be discussed.

In this work, the influence of both characteristics of the lens and misalignment of the incident beams on roughness measurement is presented. To investigate how the focal length and diameter affect the degree of correlation between the speckle patterns, a set of experiments with different lenses is performed. On the other hand, the roughness when the beams separated by an amount are non-coincident at the same point on the sample is measured. To conclude the study, the uncertainty of the method is calculated.

Opis:
Quick development of constructional composite materials application is caused by their excellent mechanical and strength-related properties, combined with a low specific weight. One of the basic groups of reinforcement materials in composites are carbon fibres discovered back in 19th century. The main reason of defects in structures of composite materials is the variability of working charges in constructions during the process of using. Existed defects are complicated because of the effects like loss of continuity of reinfused fibres, binder cracks and loss of fibres adhesiveness to binder. Diagnostic methods, which are effective with relation to metals became little effective when used in detection of defects in composite materials. This caused greater interest of diagnostic techniques with using infrared thermography. Lock-in thermography is one of NDT methods providing phase images of thermal waves in a sample leading to receiving a distribution of internal defects and allowing for thermal properties evaluation. We used lock-in thermography in connection with modulated thermal source synchronized with the IR image acquisition camera. It was prepared sample of multilayer structure carbon composite with deliberately introduced defects for comparative purposes. Very thin defects of different sizes and shapes made of Teflon or copper having a thickness of 0.1 mm were searches. The results are reported in the paper.

Non-invasive damage monitoring of concrete structures by means of Acoustic Emission (AE) requires multitransducers, multi-channel acquisition, high sampling frequency and long observation time. Owing to its propagation in concrete, the signal from AE reduces its amplitude during the propagation, and, consequently, some events can be lost due to lower signal intensity than the trigger level set on one sensor only. The innovative proposal discussed in the paper consists in the introduction of a Flat Amplifier and Trigger generator block (FAT) in order to generate a logical trigger when the AE is detected by any transducer. Experimental tests confirm the effectiveness of the FAT to acquire all the AE events and to increase the evaluation accuracy of damage indexes.

Opis:
Composite materials have been developed in recent years. A new generation of structural composite materials for advanced aircraft is Fibre Metal Laminates (FML). They are hybrid composites consisting of alternating thin layers of metal sheets and fiber-reinforced composite material. FMLs have both low weight and good mechanical properties (high damage tolerance: fatigue and impact characteristics, corrosion and fire resistance). Quality control of materials and structures in aircraft is an important issue, also for Fibre Metal Laminates. For FML parts, a 100% non-destructive inspection for internal quality during the manufacturing process is required. In the case of FML composites, the most relevant defects that should be detected by non-destructive testing are porosity and delaminations. In this paper, a number of different non-destructive methods for the inspection of Fibre Metal Laminates were studied. The possibility of quality control of manufactured FML laminates - detection of defects as well as the procedures and processes are presented and discussed.

Opis:
Ships and offshore structures operate in a severe corrosion degradation environment and face difficulty in providing longlasting corrosion protection. The Classification Societies recommend regular thickness measurements leading to structural component replacements, to ensure structural integrity during service life. The measurements are usually performed using ultrasonic thickness gauges and such an approach requires multiple measurements of the corroded structural components. Otherwise, the collected data are insufficient to precisely assess the corrosion degradation level. This study aims to perform numerical and experimental analyses to verify the use of guided ultrasonic waves in defining the corrosion degradation level of the corroded structural components of a ship. The study incorporates the fundamental antisymmetric Lamb mode, excited by piezoelectric transducers attached at the pre-selected points on stiffened panels, representing typical structural ship components. The specimens are exposed to accelerated marine corrosion degradation, the influence of the degree of degradation on the wave time of flight being analysed. The study indicates that guided waves are a promising approach for diagnosing corroded structural components. The signals characterised by a high signal-to-noise ratio have been captured, even for relatively long distances between the transducers. This proves that the proposed approach can be suitable for monitoring more extensive areas of ship structures by employing a single measurement.

A Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis (PGAA) facility has been in operation at the Budapest Neutron Centre (BNC) since 1996. Nonetheless that PGAA is a relatively new method, its applicability to archeological research has already been established by several studies. Archaeologists of the Simón Bolívar University initiated a research project aimed to perform a provenance study of pre-Hispanic pottery figurines. Forty samples were selected from two archaeological sites excavated in the Los Roques Archipelago. Almost five hundred figurines have been recovered altogether in four sites of the Archipelago. Amerindian groups from the adjacent Venezuela mainland were identified as island sites' occupants, between A.D. 1200 and the European contact period. Forty fragments of figurines were investigated by PGAA, the concentrations of major- and some trace components being determined. Among others, K2O, Cl and Cr were found to be the most significant indicators of the samples originated from the Lake Valencia Basin (mainland) and from Los Roques Islands. By relating the island figurines to their stylistical and chemical counterparts from the mainland we will provide chronological information on hundreds of mainland figurines.

Opis:
The paper presents preliminary studies of a slide bearing operation by using an acoustic emission. These studies were designed to test the usability of this method for the diagnosis and monitoring of bearings in marine drive system (in particular, stern tube bearing). This paper proposes a method of testing the operating status of the slide bearing using acoustic emission. It discusses the research station, where the study was conducted. The authors paid special attention to the impact of rotation speed of the shaft journal bearing sliding to change some parameters of the acoustic emission signal. The gathered results were analysed and it was evaluated how the rotational speed of the shaft journal affects the individual signal parameters of acoustic emission. Additionally, the sensitivity of the method was evaluated. The article describes: the basics of testing with using the acoustic emission, parameters of the acoustic signal (the acoustic emission burst count, arrival time, duration time, signal amplitude, signal energy and RMS) and the equipment necessary for measurements by using this method. This method, unlike the ultrasonic testing detects only the active wave source, and it is very sensitive to detect changes in the moment when the installation is operating under load. It proposes to use the acoustic emission method to study operational conditions of a slide bearing. Slide bearings are used in many constructions of mechanisms, machines and equipment. They are a strategic element of their design and their improper work leads to the machine damage in a very short period of time, which automatically excludes it from further exploitation. For this reason, the correct assessment of the technical condition of slide bearing and knowledge of the current operating conditions of the slide bearing are extremely important (particularly in the case of bearings in marine propulsion system).

The article presents results of research on the impact of sensitivity distribution of double transducer probes, which are often used in non-destructive ultrasonic testing of components such as forgings. Distribution of sensitivity measured in two orientations, parallel and perpendicular to the plane of separation of a double transducer probe has been tested and analyzed. A significant influence of orientation of a probe on echo envelope of an artificial point discontinuity has been studied. It has revealed great differences in length and shape of an echo envelope, depending on a type of probe and orientation of a probe separation plane to the moving direction. Eventually, the analysis of practical consequences of dual transducer probes usage for characterization of a type, dimensioning and evaluation of internal discontinuities, in accordance to the methodology specified in EN 10228, has been conducted.

Opis:
Purpose: The need for reliability of industrial structures, machines and other equipment requires more accurate testing of structural materials, especially ferromagnetic materials. Therefore, it is important to improve existing or develop new, more accurate methods and devices for non-destructive testing. Design/methodology/approach: Non-destructive testing of ferromagnetic materials is carried out by surveying a local magnetic field or determining the section magnetic resistance of a material using the proposed new type of sensor as the hand inductive element on a toroidal core with additional magnetic cores. Findings: This sensor has a simple design and high response characteristic, which has been confirmed experimentally. Such a sensor can be used for testing welded joints by the proposed method, which is based on measuring the magnetic resistance of the welding area. Research limitations/implications: Analytical physical processes research that occurred in the magnetic core material of the sensor coil core, used as a sensitive element, is complicated by the nonlinearity of the magnetization curve of the material of the core of the sensitive element and the lack of a single analytical relationship to fully describe the magnetization process of ferromagnetic materials of inductive elements. Therefore, each copy of the sensor will be an individual graduation. Practical implications: The proposed version of the hand inductive sensor allows to perform non-destructive testing during the operation of ferromagnetic structures and without special requirements to external conditions with low costs and the possibility of computer processing of data. Originality/value: The use of the nonlinearity zone of the magnetization curve of the inductive element core material made it possible to obtain a variant of a magnetic sensor that is close in sensitivity to fluxgate and, at the same time, is much simpler in design using non-deficient materials. The use of a ferrite core with low saturation induction requires a small circuit supply voltage, but a generator power reserve. The proposed hand inductive sensor is sensitive to the presence of extraneous ferromagnetic objects, and responds only to a magnetic field. The high magnetic resistance of the inductive sensor allows it to be used on uneven and dirty surfaces. High sensitivity allows to detect small deviations of the magnetic fields of dispersion of a welded joint with their comparison along the entire joint length. All of this gave new opportunities for more accurate non-destructive testing of structural elements and materials.

The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of temperature on the physical and mechanical properties of standard mortar reinforced with steel fibers, polypropylene fibers and hybrid fibers. Non-destructive tests (capillary water absorption, interconnected porosity, gas permeability, ultrasound celerity) were carried out on samples that had been heated, at a temperature ramp of 5 °C/min, to maximum temperature of: 105 °C, 400 °C, 500 °C et 800 °C. The results show a good correlation between the evolution of properties and the damage resulting from the imposed heat exposure treatment. The study shows that there is a significant deterioration of physico-mechanical properties of the fiber mortars above 500 °C. The hybrid fiber mortars show a good compromise: the polypropylene fibers guarantee a thermal stability whereas the steel fibers act to conserve good mechanical behavior.
