This text is a short description of a new academic course: “Music journalism”. The author offers an analysis of media forms in press, as well as on the radio, television and the internet. Besides the traditional forms and genres, students can analyse such forms as internet encyclopaedias or websites dedicated to music. The teacher analyses with the students the frame structures of television and radio stations, and the nature of broad-casts. There is also a possibility of analysing music press: articles, reviews and columns. The next step is teaching students to write such forms as a column or a review. Students learn practical skills in a studio, as the lecturer teaches them to broadcast live radio pro-grammes (cooperating with a professional radio DJ). The course gives an introduction to the history of classical and popular music.

Since the establishment of thanatology, the science of death, in the early 20th century, death has not only been considered a controversial subject, but it has also been regarded as a taboo topic. Various ways of communicating death have developed over the last few decades. With the advent of different mass and social media and their increasing impact on everyday life in the 21st century, death can now be communicated via a number of media platforms, such as television, radio, and online videos. This type of communication is underpinned by a series of dimensions, in particular music, that shape the conveyed message. Music has been extensively used in the dissemination of information in the wider media outlet. It is widely seen as a means of evoking emotions and of facilitating the process of assimilating information that is communicated via media. This paper seeks to discuss the functional role of music in communicating death in online video platforms. In particular, the example of the YouTube platform is used to identify the links between death, music and video platforms. This paper is part of a large-scale study on the functional role of music in communicating death through YouTube videos. It is suggested that music may serve as a link between media and death. The conclusions that are drawn in this paper are supported by the authors’ current and ongoing study and critical analysis of the deployment of music in the communication of death.

The article presents the possibilities of using the didactic potential of information technologies by the teacher in music classes. It shows the importance of using a computer in the process of education. Computer suitability for teaching increases together with growing technical capacities to register textual, graphic, and sound information; store information; copy and present it; as well as facilitate communication between information users in local and global networks. The authors of the article present also information and media competences of the teacher, as well as selected music software.
Artykuł dotyczy możliwości wykorzystania przez nauczyciela potencjału dydaktycznego technologii informacyjnych na lekcjach muzyki. Wskazuje na znaczenie zastosowania komputera w procesie edukacji, którego przydatność rośnie wraz z rosnącymi technicznymi możliwościami w zakresie rejestrowania informacji tekstowych, graficznych i dźwiękowych, ich przechowywania, sposobów prezentowania i powielania a także komunikowania się użytkowników komputerów w sieciach lokalnych i globalnych. W artykule przedstawiono także kompetencje informatyczno-medialne nauczyciela oraz wybrane oprogramowanie muzyczne.

Artykuł ten składa się z dwóch części – w pierwszej omówiono rolę muzyki hardrockowej metalowej (szeroko rozumianych) w strukturze najbardziej opiniotwórczego pisma muzycznego po 1989 r., tj. „Tylko Rocka”, zaś w drugiej badania ogniskowały wokół analizy zawartości miesięcznika pod względem tytułowych gatunków, ale w optyce genologii. W tekście wykorzystano istniejące dane statystyczne, opracowania oraz oczywiście materiały źródłowe. Metodologicznie i merytorycznie – w węższym zakresie publikacja wpisuje się w dwa nowe nurty: Metal Music Studies (humanistyka) oraz Dziennikarstwo i media muzyczne (nauki społeczne, nauki o mediach), a w szerszym rozumieniu w badania ilościowo-jakościowe (w tym analiza strukturalna). Przeprowadzone badania pokazały, że muzyka metalowa była konstytutywnym aspektem problematyki poruszanej w skądinąd formalnie stricte rockowym piśmie, a w niektórych elementach nawet wiodącym.
This article is composed of two parts. The first discusses the role of metal hardrock music (broadly understood) in the structure of the most opinion-making music magazine after 1989, ie „Only Rock”, and in the second study focused on analyzing the content of the monthly magazine in terms of title genres, but in the optics of genology. The text uses existing statistical data, studies and, of course, source materials. Methodologically and substantively – in a narrower sense, the publication encompasses two new streams: Metal Music Studies (humanistic) and Journalism and Music Media (social sciences, media studies), and in broader terms quantitative and qualitative research (including structural analysis). The research showed that metal music was a constitutive aspect of the subject matter in a strictly formal rock writing, and even some of the leading elements.

Istotą artykułu jest ocena 45 lat powojennej Polski, wyłaniająca się z prasy rockowej, zarówno bezpośrednio po upadku komunizmu, jak i w latach późniejszych. Pisma popularyzujące rock oraz pokrewne mu gatunki, wbrew pozorom, nie zawężały tematyki wyłącznie do zagadnień muzycznych, stąd długo wyczekiwane przez społeczeństwo odzyskanie wolności, w tym słowa czy druku, niemal automatycznie wywołało na ich łamach potrzebę konfrontacji z minioną epoką. Swoje opinie odnośnie do przeszłości wyrażały redakcje, publicyści, felietoniści, komentatorzy, których oryginalny styl oraz barwny język stanowiły urozmaicenie podstawowych treści, z dzisiejszej zaś perspektywy – dodatkowe źródło informacji o PRL, transformacji i początkach III Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej
The article’s essence was the assessment of 45 years of the Polish People’s Republic, emerging from the rock press, both immediately after the fall of communism and in later years. Contrary to appearances, magazines popularizing rock and its related genres did not limit their topics to musical issues; for this reason, the long-awaited regaining of freedom, including the freedom of speech, also in print, almost automatically triggered the need to confront the past era. Editors, publicists, columnists, and commentators, whose original style and colourful language enriched the content, presented their opinions, thus providing – from today’s perspective – an additional source of information about the Polish People’s Republic, the transformation and the beginnings of the Third Republic of Poland.

The relationship between music and media is closer than it is obvious at first sight. That includes primary media such as the singer or the theatre performance of an opera, print media such as sheet music and music books, electronic media like the record, the tape, radio, film and television, and the recent digital media such as the world wide web, the compact disc or the i-pod.If turned historically, we can realize a chain of media expressing and describing the history of music – from the ancient priestess and singers over the aoide and the rhapsode in old Greek culture presenting epic poetry and narrative literature up to church and choir singers in Christian churches, from mine singers, hymnbooks and troubadours in the Middle Ages up to ballad singers and street musicians selling music sheets and books in the 18th century, from music performance as live music up to recorded and canned music and finally a kind of quarry music allowing everyone a subjective and eclectic selection. The functional history of music follows inevitably the history of media.

W epoce podziału świata żelazną kurtyną, ergo separacji społeczeństw egzystujących w rygorach ustroju socjalistycznego od żyjących w systemie kapitalistycznym, istniały sfery, które trudno było reglamentować absolutnie. Należały do nich kultura, sztuka, w tym muzyka, które mimo usilnych zabiegów władz, zwłaszcza reżymowych w krajach tzw. demokracji ludowej, pozostawały spoiwem integrującym ludzi, bez względu na panujący system społeczno-polityczny. W Europie Środkowo-Wschodniej dostęp do „burżuazyjnego” jazzu był po II wojnie światowej ograniczony, aczkolwiek w drugiej połowie lat 50. zaczęło się to stopniowo zmieniać. Jednym z przykładów, przynajmniej częściowego „otwarcia na Zachód” był miesięcznik „Jazz”, zazwyczaj zobiektywizowanie komentujący ewolucję muzyki synkopowej także w bloku Wschodnim, dzięki któremu możliwe było odtworzenie procesów jej asymilacji w konkretnych krajach.
In the age when the world was divided by an iron curtain and societies living under a communist government were kept isolated from their capitalist counterparts, there were still areas which could hardly be moulded into this polarized framework. I refer here to culture and art, and also music, which, despite the tireless efforts of governments, especially the so-called “people’s democracy” regimes, remained a bond integrating populations regardless of the prevailing social and political system. After the Second World War, access to “bourgeois” jazz in Eastern Europe was curtailed; however, the situation gradually started to change in the late 1950s. One example of this at least partial “opening to the West” was Jazz magazine, which tended to objectively comment on the evolution of syncopated music in the Eastern Bloc, allowing us to review how this genre was assimilated in particular countries.

Globally, mainstream media excludes or misrepresents many societal groups, resulting in significant community absences. In these contexts, alternative media plays a vital role in offering meaningful self-representation and political participation. This type of media becomes crucial in revolutionary contexts, where people rise against the injustices of their governments in hopes of change. This article offers a case study approach to revolutionary music in the Middle East, where we review the socio-economic and political contexts behind the emergence of alternative media in Lebanon and Egypt. We analyze our cases by using Bailey et al.’s (2007) comprehensive approaches to alternative media. We propose that revolutionary music evolves and adapts to larger changes in the public sphere. Still, as the article concludes, while music can enable a persistent community when demanding change, it does not guarantee an actual change in the political system.

Over the past few years, media use among children and teens has become more prevalent than ever. With the launch of the iPod, the explosion in instant messaging, the birth of mobile video and YouTube, and the advent of social networking sites, young people are rarely out of contact, or out of reach of the media. Although culture and society have the potential to generate both positive and negative effects, everything depends on parents and parental supervision. In this paper, I want to present benefits and drawbacks which culture carries, because humans are cultural beings. We learn to communicate and understand our world through the context of our languages, traditions, behaviours, beliefs and values. Our cultural experiences and values shape the way we see ourselves and what we think is important.

This article concerns new sub-discipline of science media, ie. music and media journalism. Its primary purpose is to analyze texts forming rock artists in the 80s, and for the fight against the regime of PRL, totalitarianism, slavery societies and individuals by the Communist system. Another equally important aspect, especially in the perspective of music media studies, is systematization of Polish rock in the decade of 80, which – contrary to popular belief - was not a uniform phenomenon. As a result of review of these two issues, we were able to establish a very interesting implication (broader: the socio-political context), namely the relationship between the intensity and the forms of contestation of socialism and then authorities (including power in genere) by representatives of the various strands of rock and typology established intra-musical.
Artykuł dotyczy nowej subdyscypliny nauk o mediach, tj. dziennikarstwa i mediów muzycznych. Jego podstawowym celem jest analiza tekstów artystów rockowych tworzących w latach 80., a dotyczących walki z reżymem PRL-u, totalitaryzmem, zniewoleniem społeczeństwa i jednostek przez system komunistyczny. Drugim, nie mniej istotnym aspektem pracy, zwłaszcza w perspektywie badań nad mediami muzycznymi, jest usystematyzowanie polskiego rocka w dekadzie lat 80, który – wbrew powszechnemu mniemaniu - nie był zjawiskiem jednorodnym. W rezultacie zestawienia tych dwóch zagadnień, udało się ustalić bardzo ciekawą implikację (o szerszym: społeczno-politycznym kontekście), a mianowicie zależność pomiędzy intensywnością oraz formami kontestacji socjalizmu i ówczesnych władz (także władzy in genere) przez reprezentantów poszczególnych nurtów rocka a ustaloną typologią wewnątrz-muzyczną.

W kulturze zdominowanej przez muzykę popularną – lekką, rozrywkową – muzyka poważna musi walczyć o zasłużone miejsce w świadomości społecznej. Do tego celu jej twórcy i propagatorzy wykorzystują przede wszystkim media audiowizualne – radio, telewizję, Internet. Z ich pomocą muzyka poważna przenika do naszego codziennego życia, staje się muzyką „na co dzień”, bardziej dostępna dla szerokiej publiczności. W społeczeństwie istnieje opinia, że główną różnicą między tymi dwiema dziedzinami jest pełniona przez nie funkcja, mianowicie: użytkowy, rozrywkowy charakter i prostota formy muzyki popularnej oraz profesjonalność i skomplikowana forma muzyki poważnej. To przekonanie mija się jednak z prawdą, ponieważ żadna z powyższych cech nie może charakteryzować wyłącznie jednego rodzaju muzyki. Jednocześnie widoczne są powiązania między tymi dwoma rodzajami muzyki – strukturalne i funkcjonalne, a także rosnące zainteresowanie samej kultury popularnej muzyką poważną, które przejawia się m.in. w takich formach, jak talent show.
In culture dominated by pop music – light and entertaining, classical music must fight for a position it rightly deserves in social awareness. For this purpose, its creators and supporters take advantage of audiovisual media, i.e. radio, television or the Internet. With their aid, classical music gets into our everyday life as an „everyday music”, becoming more available for the broad public. The popular opinion is that the main difference between these two forms of artistic creation lies in the function they fulfill, namely: usage, entertainment and simplicity of pop music versus professionalism and complexity of classical music. This opinion however does not seem true, as none of the features mentioned above characterizes only one type of music. At the same time, some structural and functional relationships are visible between these two types as well as a growing interest on the part of culture itself in classical music, which is reflected in, inter alia, such forms as talent shows.

The music media have constructed the identity of groupies as sexual and passive objects, submissive, inauthentic consumers of music. The stereotype, although still present in popular culture, is criticized by both the interested parties and rock artists. This article is an attempt to discuss the role that groupies played in the creation of the myth and character of the rock god, while taking into account the preconceived assumptions held by the popular media. Narratives of groupies’ participation in the emerging rock and metal scene have also been included as the ones which created a male rock musician identity: wild, aggressive and powerful. The basis for the discussion of groupies and their role in building identity in the context of rock music is the result of a deep, rhetorical analysis of groupies’ biographies, press materials, films, scientific literature and own research.
Media muzyczne skonstruowały tożsamość groupies jako obiektów seksualnych i biernych, uległych, nieautentycznych konsumentek muzyki. Stereotyp, choć wciąż jest obecny w kulturze popularnej, spotyka się z krytyką zarówno ze strony samych zainteresowanych, jak i artystów rockowych. W tym artykule podjęto próbę omówienia roli, jaką odegrały groupies w tworzeniu mitu i postaci boga rocka, przy jednoczesnym uwzględnieniu utartych z góry założeń utrwalonych przez popularne media. Uwzględniono narracje z uczestnictwa groupies na budującej się scenie rockowej i metalowej, które stworzyły też osobowość męskiego muzyka rockowego: dzikiego, agresywnego i potężnego. Podstawą dyskusji o groupies i ich roli w budowaniu tożsamości w kontekście muzyki rockowej jest głęboka, retoryczna analiza biografii groupies, materiałów prasowych, filmów, literatury naukowej oraz badania własne.

The category of nostalgia is the element of artistic message frequently used in popular music, which influences the reception of a particular song. In their activity musicians refer to the musical past by employing cultural references and utilise fashions present in a certain environment for their own benefit. This category is present in lyrics and music, in the stage shows (performing live, festivals, TV shows) and promotional activities (interviews, promotional video clips for the songs). Such referring to tradition became a constant element of artistic communication, anchoring the music in the past and taking into account the cultural specificities. Definitional capturing of nostalgia is not entirely possible: research into this category require approaches which take into account the aspects of context important for decoding the cultural content. Interpretive tools used by semiology or cultural studies allow to depict the elements included in the form and content of music and lyrics. They indicate the presence of nostalgia as a category determining the reception of artistic work.

This paper discusses the role that drama, music and media can play in heritage language learning. The authors will present findings from a project that took place in a community Greek school in London and explore how creative approaches can enhance students' heritage language learning, by bringing together different disciplines as well as different environments such as school, home and community. The project was part of Critical Connections: Multilingual Digital Storytelling Project, a collaboration between Goldsmiths, University of London and different community and mainstream schools in four countries.

What happens when the music production processes and spaces of a traditionally live art form such as opera are digitized? What is the relationship between community and isolation for artists when their workspace is lifted from the theatre-with its interpersonal connections-and placed in the virtual world? What opportunities and what risks does this pose for performers? Are there parallels to other art forms that developed or expanded as the result of new media technologies? This article will explore these issues by considering the production processes of the animated YouTube opera/movie Todd and the Vampire, composed and created by Ronen Shai, with contributions by musicians and visual artists working simultaneously, but independently, around the world. How does this piece utilize technology to challenge and transcend traditional notions of space and identity? What are the implications of this somewhat disembodied process for performers, audiences, and for the art form itself?
