Opis:
This paper investigates the effect of buoys and a clump weight on the mooring lines and the dynamic response of the floating platform. The full-scale of the OC4-DeepCwind semisubmersible FOWT platform is analyzed using the boundary element method (BEM) with ANSYS-AQWA software, when considering regular wave conditions. Platform motions and mooring line tension in the surge, heave, and pitch are presented and discussed in the time domain analyses (TDA) and frequency domain analyses (FDA). Validation is performed by compression of the platform motion RAO and the fairlead tension RAO magnitudes in the surge, heave, and pitch (for both numerical and experimental data) under seven sea states’ regular waves. The results show that increasing the number of buoys at a constant volume decreases the surge and pitch motion amplitude, while the heave motion increases slightly. Adding the buoy and clump weight (type 1) to the mooring line reduces the oscillation amplitude tension. In addition, raising the number of buoys increases the oscillation tension.

Opis:
To harness the endless hydrokinetic energy of the Kuroshio current, the joint research team of the National Taiwan University and the National Taiwan Ocean University has developed a floating Kuroshio turbine (FKT) system in Taiwan. In normal operation, the system floats at a certain small depth from the ocean surface to reduce the wave effects and take advantage of faster current speeds. In the present study, the effect of the mooring line on the system dynamics is investigated computationally. Two different auxiliary mooring line designs and, for each design, three different common mooring lines (polyester ropes of neutral buoyancy, iron chains, and 6×19 wires ropes with wire core) are examined. The study makes use of several commercial and in-house packages, integrated to find various coefficients. It is found that the mooring line, the auxiliary mooring line design, and the gravity centre can have a significant effect on system fluctuations in normal operation if the combination of these factors is not properly matched.

Opis:
Some recent accident reports involving large vessels in mooring operations or breaking away from their moorings conclude that brakes of mooring winches do not render before line parts. As the potential loss of life is high, the utmost attention on-board must be paid to minimise this inherent risk. When the load on the mooring lines becomes overloaded beyond the pre-set levels, mooring winches band brakes have the safety function of rendering and allowing the line to shed this load before its potential breaking and the subsequent snap-back. As a preventive measure against breaking, the pre-set level, known as Brake Holding Capacity (BHC), must be below the Minimum Breaking Load (MBL) of the line. In this paper, the authors analyse concerns that can arise from those with conventional screw manually-applied band brakes regarding their BHC reliability. Thus, in order to improve safety, the advantages of the spring-applied band brakes with manual setting and release or with hydraulic release are highlighted. Finally, the paper shows a typical procedure using a hydraulic jack for brake testing the winch of a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) ship to fix their BHC in order to hold 60% of the MBL of the mooring line.

Opis:
This study employed viable methods for the selection of a preeminent mooring line amongst other alternatives for the mooring of a floating wave energy converter (WEC) in shallow waters. Conventional mooring lines for WEC mooring are identified for an optimal selection exercise. A combination of the Entropy Weight and Visekriterijumska Optimizacijia I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR) methods is utilized in the aforementioned exercise. The two methods are effectively used in an assessment of the attributes and performance of various mooring lines in practical application. The result obtained demonstrated that a steel wire rope is the best mooring line suitable for WEC system operations. It constitutes a good reference to marine and offshore engineering industries in decision making related to optimal mooring lines suitable for the mooring of a WEC system in shallow waters.
