Identyfikacja kryminalistyczna mówcy wymaga ekstrakcji cech osobniczych przenoszonych wraz z sygnałem mowy. Sprawcy przeróżnych przestępstw podejmują próby ukrycia tych cech. Jedna z najpopularniejszych technik maskowania polega na wykorzystaniu urządzenia modyfikującego częstotliwość tonu krtaniowego i jest oparta na metodach PSOLA lub PV. Metody te w trakcie resyntezy sygnału generują zniekształcenia, które muszą wpływać na obserwowane cechy. W ramach pracy zbadano wpływ zniekształceń wprowadzanych przez algorytmy modyfikacji tonu krtaniowego na językowe cechy osobnicze oraz skuteczność automatycznego systemu kryminalistycznej identyfikacji mówców wyrażoną za pomocą charakterystyk Tippetta.
Forensic speaker recognition is based on individual features which are conveyed with speech signal. Various crime offenders undertake attempts to disguise their individual features. One of the most common voice disguise method involves pitch shifting with PSOLA or PV methods. These methods distort speech signal during signal re-synthesis which has the influence on individual features. In hereby study, the Authors examined the effect of using pitch shifting algorithms on language individual features and effectiveness of forensic automatic speaker recognition which is assessed through Tippett plots.

Opis:
This study explores the most preferred and effective teaching methods for Korean language and culture for university students. Statistical analysis of awareness of the Korean language, history, and culture was conducted. It tested differences in students’ knowledge about Korea dependently on a teaching method and sociodemographic variables. The study investigated is there a dependency between favourite teaching methods of K-culture and analogical methods using K-pop, K-drama, and K-food. The main research tool was the survey conducted among 70 students studying Korean language and culture at the University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland. The study’s statistical analyses employed the IBM SPSS Statistics 29.0 package, used for analysing basic descriptive statistics, r Pearson and rho Spearman correlation analyses, and t Student test for independent variables. The analysis proves that the students do not differ in terms of knowledge about Korea in relation to a preferred and effective teaching method.

W artykule poddano analizie elementy biografii językowych przedstawicieli polskiej mniejszości narodowej w Iwano-Frankiwsku (dawnym Stanisławowie). Biografie językowe osób mieszkających na pograniczu kultur w kontekście procesów historycznych i społecznych podzielono na cztery grupy. Podstawę badań stanowiły wywiady językowe przeprowadzone w środowisku mieszkańców Iwano-Frankiwska w wieku powyżej 70 lat, posługujących się w życiu codziennym co najmniej dwoma językami. W tekście opisano żywotność oraz sfery funkcjonowania języka polskiego, z uwzględnieniem polskich organizacji.
The paper analyses elements of language biographies of residents of the Polish national minority in Ivano-Frankivsk (formerly Stanisławów). The language biographies of people living on the borderline of cultures in the context of historical and social processes have been divided into four groups. The research was based on linguistic interviews conducted among the inhabitants of Ivano-Frankivsk aged over 70, who used at least two languages in their everyday life. The text describes the vitality and functioning of the Polish language, including Polish organisations.

Opis:
The main task of Polish schools, which have been established in all larger emigration clusters, was to preserve the knowledge of the language among children. Its command was perceived as a symbol of one's ethnicity, a sign of belonging to a group, and an expression of acceptance of the system of values, which the group represented and cultivated. Knowledge of the language was also supposed to enable young people to access the products of Polish culture and, by means of that, facilitate communal bonding. This function remained unchanged. What changed, though, is the geopolitical situation affecting the position of the Polish emigrant group. The systemic transition, EU accession, and the possibility to participate in European educational programs make our country look quite different from the emigrants' perspective. This implies that the same function has to be realized in a manner which keeps up with the times. The contemporary ethnic school has to be modern. It has to offer interesting educational programs, which correspond to the reality, but which also enable cultivating the tradition, an aspect so important when living abroad. It should organize the educational process in such a way that the young people participating in it have a feeling that they not only learn things that are important for the community of which they are a part, but also, by learning the language, they gain an additional advantage on the labor market. The text presents a proposal of organizing the didactic process in an ethnic school with consideration for a factor which, so far, has not been acknowledged when assigning students to classes, namely the level of language command. It also proposes a conception of integrated teaching of language skills and the components of the Polish language system based on cultural texts, what can significantly increase the effectiveness of teaching.

The article shows the usefulness of the method of investigation applied 50 years ago by professor Przemyslaw Zwolinski. This outstanding investigator of history of Slavonic languages used a term “language biography” when he was elaborating the language of writings of Marcin Bielski. The same term was used to describe the phenomenon of poetry written by Lucjan Boruta, folk sculptor from Drohiczyn. This author of thrilling religious poems was born in very poor, uneducated family. When he was young, World War II broke out, Lucjan graduated to primary school only. He spent a great part of his life working as sacristan in a parish of Drohiczyn. In his free time Lucjan was writing poetry and keeping a diary, he was also carving in wood. The crucial moment in his life was the accident, whisch left him disabled. The application of the “language biography” method helps to understand the very high artistic level of Lucjan Boruta’s poetry.

In the global marketplace of the 21st century the idea of learning language specific to business exists as an operative necessity in improving the functionality of a marketable skill set. Similarly, the use of work-place specific terminology acts as a key ingredient in improving the ability to work, converse, and thrive in any environment. However, there is a gap which exists in the ability of an individual to succeed in the workplace despite fluency in business specific terminology. This gap can be remedied with a working understanding of the English language and mastery beyond instructivist methods, using a line of inquiry consistent with modern models of a professional workplace. In this paper, I will explain and discuss the benefits of using the Socratic Method in an English Language Learning course of study to cement the effectiveness and success of English vocabulary and terminology in the workplace.

Readiness to learn to read must be shaped at the level of preschool education. One of the innovative methods of teaching pre-school children to read is the natural language teaching method developed by Wenda Pye. The programme consists in the teaching of listening, speaking, reading and writing using games and creative activities. The learning process is accompanied by children’s creative activity. Therefore, the natural language teaching method is perceived not only as the process of language learning but also, and most importantly, as educating through language, where language is both a means of communication and a thinking tool. The concept is based on the belief that child’s language is a specific phenomenon determined, on the one hand, by natural child development and, on the other hand, by child’s interactions with the environment. Consequently, child’s language education should be enhanced by a subtle help from an adult, who – by the use of provocation, arrangement and gentle encouragement to take actions – opens up a new, unknown space to the child, i.e. the world of writing. Language plays a role of a factor that integrates various fields of knowledge and different types of child’s activity in reality perception and acquisition. Natural situations used in the teaching of reading, which create occasional educational situations, inspire the child and simultaneously introduce him into the world of writing. Thus, learning to read should be accompanied by learning to write. The discovery of new values that the novel language of signs has with regards to information acquisition increases child’s motivation to verbalise his own thoughts and to learn to read and write. Emotional engagement facilitates memorizing a story or new vocabulary. It sensitizes the child to the graphical, phonological and semantic dimension of a given word by making a direct link between the graphical representation and the sound. A point of departure for natural language teaching is a short and simple text and illustrations that highly relate to it. Texts form stories included in little books entitled “Sunshine Library”. There is a series of 40 books designed for pre-school children self-study of reading. The books are graded at four levels of difficulty. Didactic aids used in the series are very well organised and introduce already consolidated semantic structures, providing new contents regarding language competence at a slow pace. Each book is composed of three stories. Typically, the first story includes one text with carefully selected new language structures. The following two stories serve the purpose of material consolidation. The essence of the books are pictures, which should be in line with the text because the basis of reading is to associate an image with its graphical representation. The print used in the books is large, legible, the words are clearly separated, and every sentence starts with a new line. The stories are simple and presented with repetitive sentence patterns. Natural language teaching develops and deepens child’s natural willingness to speak, read or draw graphical symbols. Speech is here not only the foundation of child’s expression and learning to read and write, but also a support for child’s paralanguage activity. The article presents the use of the natural language teaching method in pre-school children education.

This research aims to study the application of using films in teaching the Arabic language to Korean students. Recently, level based classes and developing communication skills are becoming important goals in foriegn language education. The most effective way to develop the student’s communication skills is to expose them to real life situations and related resources. Films are replicas of real life situations and thus are effective especially in teaching spoken language. This research implies the following things to Arabic education. First, it is best to provide realistic data to students to improve their communication skills. Selecting films that contain conversations and expressions that are used every day, while avoiding violence or contents of too much slang, will allow students to continuously remain interested and focused. Second, a program that connects films to CD-ROM for textbooks needs to be created. Additionally, there is a need to increase the understanding of spoken language through various study programs for Korean teachers. Finally, using interesting films to motivate students will have positive effects and will allow them to approach Arabic through understanding of the language rather than pure memorization.

This paper concerns metaphilosophy and its role in philosophy, particularly in analytic movement. In Introduction the genesis of the term „metaphilosophy” is described and function of metaphilosophical considerations – is it also argued that metaphilosophy is a part of philosophy. The relation of philosophy to science is considered as one the most important metaphilosophical problems. Since the author represents an analytic approach to philosophy, he devotes a separate section to general aspect of metaphilosophy in the context of analytic movement in contemporary philosophy. The method of paraphrases, illustrated by several examples, is proposed as a tool of philosophical analysis.

Foreign language learning anxiety has been the target of many studies in the field of applied linguistics, but, with the dynamics turn in the field, attempts have been recently made to uncover the dynamics of anxiety English as a foreign language (EFL) learners go through, especially within the moments of their conversational interactions. Within these interactions, dynamics of anxiety might emerge in different patterns under the influence of the status of the participants’ interlocutors and their familiarity with them. This study explores the dynamics of EFL learners’ anxiety while interacting with different interlocutors from an idiodynamic perspective. The participants of this case study were two female freshman students, taking a speaking and listening university course, who were interviewed by four interlocutors with different status and level of familiarity. Following an idiodynamic method, they self-rated their anxiety fluctuations under the influence of each interlocutor throughout each conversation followed by stimulated recall interviews regarding the explanations of the changes in their anxiety during the conversations. The results showed both change and stability in the participants’ anxiety under the influence of the interlocutors’ familiarity with the participants and their status as well their verbal and nonverbal feedback. The explanation of these changes based on the main properties of complex dynamic system theory is discussed.

The article is coauthored and analyses reading as a method of learning foreign languages and touches upon students’ perception of the issue. To this end the survey was carried out involving the students of Wyższa Szkoła Gospodarki w Bydgoszczy. This paper is based on a brief theoretical overview, the analysis of the questionnaires and their data. The authors analyze the results of the survey and define the prospects for development and use of reading as a means of learning foreign languages in the present paper. The article highlights possible practical use of the findings by means of adjustment of the existing academic curricular, making changes when preparing to university classes, etc.

This paper is dedicated to the lexical issues of the Polish language of the interwar period approached from the angle of language ethics. It represents the stream of structuralist research and has been prepared in accordance with the synchronic method. The author concentrates on describing selected aspects of the language of newspaper headlines. The object of the research paper is the lexical corpus of 106 issues representing 5 annals of a radical antisemitic weekly titled „Pod Pręgierz” (“In the Pillory”). The outcome of the performed analysis of the vocabulary of headlines has shown that the dominance of the lexical linguistic measures which negatively evaluate the Jewish community fully fits the lexis of „Pod Pręgierz” into the phenomenon of language aggression.
