Analysis of tradition devoted to Isaac leads to the conclusion that the character of the patriarch described a pattern known from the cycle of Abraham. Sometimes it almost a mirror image in an abbreviated form (as Gen. 26). Isaac is presented as a second Abraham, and his character is transferred from the patriarchal promises from Abraham to Jacob (Gen. 27). The prophet Amos (Amos 7,9.16), although his expressions are not yet satisfactorily explained, gives the impression that in the eighth century BC, there was a sense of connectedness between the character of Isaac localized in Beer Sheba and memory ethno-religious people of the Kingdom of Israel. Indeed the Prophet used the term “house of Isaac” parallel to the term “house of Jacob” and mentions the annual pilgrimage to the shrine of Northerners in Beer Sheba.

This article concerns events of the Old Testament – Yahweh commands Abraham to sacrifice his only son – Isaac – on Mount Moriah. This passage from the Old Testament, from the Book of Genesis, became the basis of Søren Kierkegaard’s considerations in Fear and Trembling. In the text I refer to, on the one hand, Kierkegaard’s considerations, while on the other hand I try to identify other possible interpretive tropes that could be useful, for example, during classes on the subject of faith or the status of ethical dilemmas in the modern world.

The article presents historical, literary, religious and political context in which interest in the poetry of the Baroque Neo-Latin poet Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski (1595–1640) appeared in the first half of the 18th century among English dissenters and non-conformists. The article concentrates on the best known and most prolific of the six dissenting translators of Sarbiewski Isaac Watts (1674–1748) and his pupil and biographer Thomas Gibbons (1720–1785). The article includes a brief presentation of the translated poems of Sarbiewski and their translators.
Artykuł przedstawia historyczny, literacki, religijny i polityczny kontekst zainteresowania, jakim cieszyła siętwórczość Macieja Kazimierza Sarbiewskiego (1595–1640) wśród dysydentów i nonkonformistów w Anglii w I poł. XVIII w. Autor skupia się na najbardziej znanych i płodnych spośród sześciu dysydenckich tłumaczy Sarbiewskiego: Isaaku Wattsie (1674–1748) oraz jego wychowanku i biografiście Thomasie Gibbonsie (1720–1785). Modern critical reception characterizes patriarch Isaac as a particular character type: the schlemiel. This article provides a tour through the cumulative evidence for this comedic read, focusing on Genesis 27, the blessing of Jacob. It provides a revised narratological and literary context, arguing that Isaac’s fivefold questioning demonstrates not confusion, but awareness: he knows exactly which son is in front of him. The paper presents an alternative narratological and literary context for Isaac, framing his questions in terms of the editing process: a synchronic reading of Isaac’s acumen is corroborated by evidence from diachronic reading. The redaction history of the Isaac material in chapter 26 yields a number of points suggesting the dependence of the Abraham material on the Isaac narrative. A number of features indicate a stronger, less subordinate Isaac figure based on the earlier tradition revealed by a complex transmission history than the image arising from the mainstream synchronic reading of chapter 27 seems to depict.

Księga Rodzaju prezentuje historię trzech ojców: Abrahama, Izaaka i Jakuba. Dla Abrahama bycie ojcem oznacza najpierw oczekiwanie prez długi czas syna, a następnie podążanie za obietnicą, którą Bóg mu złożył, szczególnie obietnicą syna. Kiedy narodzili się Ismael i Izaak, uczucia ojcowskie Abrahama zostały poddane próbie. Izmael miał zostać odesłany wraz z Hagar. Po tym Bóg każe mu złożyć w ofeirze jedynego syna, Izaaka. Kiedy Izaak stał się stary i nie mógł widzieć, został zaślepiony przez swoje pragnienie dziczyzny. Przygotował je Ezaw, który został jednak ubiegnięty przez Rebekę, która zyskała błogosławieństwo dla swego umiłowanego syna, Jakuba. Jakub był ojcem najbardziej doświadczonym przez życie. Jego miłość do Józefa i po jego rzekomej śmierci do najmłodszego syna, Beniamina, ostała się próbie.
The Book of Genesis tells a story about three fathers: Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. To be a father for Abraham is first to expect a child for a long time, then to follow the words of promise God speaks to him, especially the promise of a son. When Ishmael and Isaac have been born to him, his father affections are put to the tests. Ishmael has to be sent away along with his mother Hagar. Then, God commands him to sacrifice his now only son, Isaac. When Isaac himself was old and could not see, he was blinded by his desire for the venison stew, Esau used to prepare for him, but eventually he was corrected by his wife Rebekah who gained his blessing for Jacob, the son she loved. Finally, Jacob is the most experienced father. His love for Joseph and then after his alleged death, for his youngest son Benjamin, proved to be strong enough and stood the test of time.

This article presents two Karaim religious hymns attributed to the famous Lithuanian Karaite sage, Isaac ben Abraham Troki (1533–1594), the best known Lithuanian Karaite scholar in Europe, author of Ḥizzuk Emuna ‘The strengthening of faith’, which was translated into a number of European languages. The poems were found in two Karaite manuscripts, one undated, the other dated 1686.

This paper analyses urban spaces of crisis in Isaac Rosa’s novels La mano invisible (2011), La habitación oscura (2013), and the graphic novel Aquí vivió. Historia de un desahucio (2016) by Cristina Bueno and Isaac Rosa. It explores the dystopian and realistic elements in Rosa’s fiction and proposes to read his works through the lens of Michel Foucault’s essay on other spaces. The article argues that the unusual, quasi-dystopian spaces are of a double nature, typical for heterotopias, and play a significant role in the manner in which Rosa depicts the consequences of the economic crisis in Spain at the beginning of the 21st century.

Non e soltanto una delle dimensioni del Famore divino, ma motore di tutta la oikonomia (sir:) cioe attraverso la Misericordia si puó capire la storia ed entrare in comunione eon Dio. Ma la Misericordia cosi accentuata faceva e fa paura, perche puó provocare difficolta, anzitutto nell’attivita pastorale. Per ąuesto gli scritti di Isacco sono - secondo i monaci - non per i giovani, ma soltanto per i coloro che hanno un certo livello nella vita monastica.

In this article the author analyses Stefan Żeromski’s and Isaac Bashevis Singer’s fiction in search of contrasts and similarities in their images of 19th and early 20th century Jewish Warsaw. Singer portrayed it repeatedly in many of his works, such as In My Father’s Court (1966), Shosha (1978), Love and Exile (1984) and The Certificate (1992). Żeromski depicted it in two of his novels: Ludzie bezdomni [Homeless People] (1899) and Przedwiośnie [The Coming Spring] (1924). One would expect the differences to be huge and numerous and the resemblances rare and superficial. Singer memorialized a world that is no more, which was his own universe and heritage, while Żeromski was an outsider exploring an area that is mysterious, afflicted with severe poverty and in some ways out of bounds. Nevertheless, there are some intriguing analogies, particularly when Singer showed his streets, shops and houses through the eyes of a complete stranger or an incomer who perfectly remembers his childhood spent on Krochmalna Street but revisits to find it profoundly transformed—full of new thoughts, ideas and experiences.

Robotników i roboty łączy ze sobą intencja do posłuszeństwa rozkazom, która jest powodem mojej propozycji analizy kilku opowieści o robotach autorstwa Isaaca Asimova. Realizowanie programu w trakcie wykrywania i rozwiązywania problemów oraz wypełniania zadanych instrukcji – to wszystko czyni robota doskonałym niewolnikiem. Trzy Prawa Robotyki Asimova stanowią formalny warunek możliwości pracy w społeczeństwie utrzymującym roboty, tak samo jak niewolnicze prawa w koloniach brytyjskich Ameryki miały zapewnić utrzymanie efektywności niewolnictwa poprzez zamknięcie niewolników w miejscach ich pracy. Poprzez ustanowienie struktury rozkazu potrzebnej w utrzymywaniu i demontowaniu pracującego systemu androidy Asimova objawiają niemożliwość obydwu – robotów i niewolników. Trzy Prawa i ich konsekwencja, czyli gwarancja ochrony, rozkazu i operacji, prawdopodobnie nie mogą działać wobec podmiotów będących oddzielnie panami lub niewolnikami. Te Prawa są paradoksalnym zestawieniem w konsekwencji czego niewolnictwo staje się niemożliwe z punktu widzenia logiki.
Slaves and robots have in common that they are intended to obey orders. Therefore I suggest taking a close look at some of Isaac Asimov’s robot stories. Executing a program while detecting and overcoming problems and acting towards fulfillment of given instructions—all this makes a robot a perfect slave. In the same way as slave laws in the British Colonies in America were intended to keep slavery effective by confining slaves in their place, so are Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics the formal condition for the workability of a robot holding society. Asimov’s androids reveal the implicit impossibility of both robots and slaves by establishing the command structure that would be needed to keep the system working and then disassembling this structure. The Three Laws, as they are meant to guarantee protection, command, and operation, cannot possibly work with separate master/slave subjects. They are a paradoxical juxtaposition. And consequently, slavery is logically impossible.

The article is a case study illustrating the phenomenon of historical and cultural memory of the Andalusia region in the work of Isaac Albéniz, a famous Spanish composer of classical music on the turn of the 19th and 20th century. The article discusses the most outstanding composition of I. Albéniz Iberia in the context of the issue of national identity, history and culture of Andalusia. It contains a historical outline of individual Andalusian regions and Albéniz’s letters.

The paper presents engineering interests of Isaac Newton, including some of his technical inventions. So far, this topic has not been studied in a broader manner and in more depth. This article discusses Newton’s youthful passions against the backdrop of the so-called mathematical magic literature. His two inventions, i.e. variants of the reflecting telescope and the marine octant are also discussed. Finally, an example is provided of the involvement of the author of Principia in a discussion around the steam engine and the ship powered by such engine designed by Denis Papin.
Artykuł przedstawia zainteresowania inżynierskie Isaaca Newtona, w tym niektóre z jego wynalazków technicznych. Temat ten nie doczekał się jak dotąd szerszego i pogłębionego opracowania. W artykule poruszono młodzieńcze pasje Newtona na tle literatury z zakresu tzw. magii matematycznej. Omówiono także dwa wynalazki Newtona – wariant teleskopu zwierciadłowego i oktant morski. Na koniec został przytoczony przykład zaangażowania autora Zasad w dyskusję nad projektem technicznym maszyny parowej i napędzanego przez nią statku autorstwa Denisa Papina.

Wybór Abrahama był niezwykle ważny dla całej historii odkupienia opisanej zarówno w Starym, jak i w Nowym Testamencie. Osobisty kontakt z Bogiem przyniósł obraz Boga będącego blisko człowieka. Abraham uważany był za przyjaciela Boga. Tak postrzegany jest we wszystkich trzech religiach monoteistycznych: judaizmie, chrześcijaństwie i islamie. Patriarcha jest więc postacią najbardziej „ekumeniczną” ze wszystkich i nazywany jest „ojcem wiary”. Historyczność Abrahama jest obecnie szeroko dyskutowana. Zagadnienie to było badane z perspektywy historycznej, archeologicznej, etnologicznej i religiologicznej.Przymierze Boga z Abrahamem było pierwszym historycznym wydarzeniem, które przypieczętowało ludzkie relacje wertykalne. Przymierze Boga z Noem nie miało charakteru historycznego, lecz było jedynie ludzką nadzieją na intymną relację z Najwyższym. To sam Bóg wzbudził w człowieku te nadzieje. Opis przymierza z Noem był preludium do przymierza Jahwe z Abrahamem i jego potomkami. Wybór Abrahama przez Boga zmienił na zawsze historię ludzkości. Odtąd Jahwe miał powtarzać.Opowiadanie o związaniu Izaaka – syna Abrahama (Rdz 22,1-19) jest jednym z najbardziej porywających tekstów w całej Biblii hebrajskiej Po rozdziale (Rdz 21), w którym Izaak rodzi się jako spełnienie Bożej obietnicy, czytelnik przechodzi do tekstu, w którym Bóg żąda od Abrahama złożenia chłopca w ofierze. Tekst Rdz 22,1-19 jest mieszaniną źródeł E i J, dlatego opisane w nim motywy musiały być znane w różnych tradycjach izraelskich i były postrzegane jako szczególnie ważne zagadnienia nauczania religijnego.
Abraham’s choice was extremely important for the whole history of redemption described both in the Old and the New Testaments. Personal contact with God has brought the image of God being close to man. Abraham was considered to be God’s friend. He is perceived as such in all the three monotheistic religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The patriarch is thus the most “ecumenical” character of all and is called the “father of faith”. The historicity of Abraham has been presently widely discussed. The question has been studied from the historical, archaeological, ethnological and religiological perspectives.The covenant of God with Abraham was the first historical event that sealed human vertical relations. God’s covenant with Noah had not been historical but merely human hopes of intimate relation with the Highest. It was God Himself to evoke the hopes in man. The description of the Noahite covenant was a prelude to Yahweh covenant with Abraham and his descendants. God’s choice of Abraham has changed human history for ever. Since then Yahweh would repeat.The tale of Isaac’s – Abraham’s son – binding (Gen 22:1-19) is one of the most thrilling texts in the whole Hebrew Bible After the chapter (Gen 21), Isaac, being born in fulfilment of God’ s promise, the reader goes to the text where God demands from Abraham to sacrifice the boy. The text of Gen 22:1-19 is a mixture of E and J sources therefore the motifs described there must have been known in various Israeli traditions and were perceived as specially important issues of religious teaching.

Since the 19th century, both popular and professional literature presented a possibility according to which Isaac Newton contributed to some extent to the invention of jet propulsion. In the presented paper, this view is carefully analysed. Various authors attributed to Newton the design of a road vehicle (the so-called Newton’s steam carriage) moved by ejection of hot steam. This opinion was expressed in certain works written by the first supporters of Newton, e.g. Willem Jacob ’s Gravesande, John Theophilus Desaguliers Desaguliers and Jean Antoine Nollet. What is more, there are miniature models of such a vehicle present in some collections of scientific instruments. Relying on the above examples, it would be hard to prove that Newton was indeed the true inventor of jet propulsion. However, there is no doubt that he was very interested in various engineering issues and invented several scientific instruments, e.g. the variant of a reflecting telescope, a sea octant and a rotary slide rule.

Opis:
The main aim of this article is to discuss some common and tragic human fate, that is making the decisions in state of incertitude (of our real motiva- tions as well as of further consequences of our choices), and especially natu- ral human’s reactions to them, that is searching the hints how to proceed (in- side us, from authority, from ‘the signs of the world’). The examples taken to analyse are: Biblical story of Abraham (Do I really hear the voice of God telling me to kill my son?), philosophical story of Sartre’s disciple (Should I join to the resistance or stay with my sick mother?), and literary story of Dostoyevsky, taken from J.M. Coetzee’s novel Master of Petersburg (How to refine the voice of revelation from the hum of world?). Philosophical con- siderations are connected with narrative analysis in order to not only describe human condition of incertitude but also observe how the medium of literature deals with it.
