Opis:
The aim of the article is to demonstrate the rivalries stemming from the Old-Polish variant forms/ albo and abo in the 16th-century printed material from Cracow, having the strongest influence upon the forming literary Polish language. The article tries to answer the question how a certain linguistic custom was established, not being a norm yet. For comparison, the process has also been shown in the prints from the northern borderland of Poland and Great Poland, the regions which at that time did not have such a significant influence on the literary language as the prints from Cracow, but also produced more books than other regions. The listing of data from three regions makes it possible to show the differences in the formation of the norm between the centre of cultural life of the Republic of Poland (Cracow) and its peripheral regions – the eastern and the western.

The article attempts the technical determination of the graphic and phonetic variance acknowledged in the Polish edition of the Żywoty filozofów by Mikuláš Konáč. The method used was to analyze the distribution of oppositional graphic forms. It has been determined that the technical nature of the print is 9 variants: 4 graphic variants („j” = /j/ in position before consonant, „j” = /j/ in the voice-over position, „u” = /v/ i /v/ in the midpoint position, „th” = /t/) and 5 phonetic variants (miesce, miejsce, miejstce; wszystko; wieliki); among them are both regressive and progressive forms. The analysis also shows that, using the disclosed technical variants, zecer manipulated the graphical content of the lines in both possible ways: narrowing or widening.

The article discusses difficulties in tracing Old Polish phonetics in an early printed text. It demonstrates the importance of rediscovering the Old Polish phonetics and, at the same time, the limits of such endeavour. The linguistic features are shown to melt with the conventional ways of printing certain words. These conventions have to do with graphic aspects of the text rather than with the real language. The problem is presented primarily by using Old Polish loanwords as an example.

In the years 1750–1759, Johann Christoph Jungmann was a tenant of the printing house in Torun. He was probably born around 1700 and from 1729 he was a printer in Jaworze in Silesia, from which he moved to Torun in 1750. He published, for example, the Torun hymnal (1752) and the artistic print to commemorate the 300th anniversary of incorporating Torun and Royal Prussia into the Crown in 1754. The activity of J.Ch. Jungmann after 1759 is not known; he was even omitted from the Torun biographic dictionary. Based on documents found in the State Archive in Gdansk, it is known that J.Ch. Jungmann died in Gdansk on 27 October 1778 and was buried in the church of Saints Peter and Paul. After his death the inheritance proceedings took place; the inventory of his property was carried out, his debts were paid and the costs of his funeral were covered. The heir of his wealth was his son who lived in Tczew. This documentation has allowed us to learn about the life of J.Ch. Jungmann and remember his publishing legacy.

Opis:
Over the last two decades, there has been more comprehensive and focused research on old prints produced by the historical Jesuit Trnava University. It existed in Trnava between 1635 and 1777 when it was moved to Buda (today's Budapest, Hungary) by the monarch Maria Theresa. Thus the university influenced the educational level of the Hungarian population in the 17th and especially the 18th century, and became the centre of Baroque education in what is today Slovakia. The establishment and existence of Trnava University was of fundamental importance for the development of many scientific disciplines, which was further multiplied by the titles published by the Academic Printing House. This study aims to highlight those aspects of the activities of the university and individuals that have contributed to a breakthrough in scientific knowledge and at the same time have been the subject of partial or systematic research since 2000.

Opis:
Over the centuries, the typographic medium and book printing responded to the political, economic, cultural, and social conditions very sensitively. The author deals with social influences on the development of book printing in Bratislava from the fifteenth century when the first printer is documented in the town. She ponders the reasons for the long absence of typographic activities in Bratislava from the late fifteenth century to the early seventeenth century. Paradoxically, the Reformation gave an impetus to the further development of book printing in Bratislava, as a Catholic printing house was established there in direct response to Reformation printing in Hungary. Therefore, the author also examines the conditions of Reformation printing to which the beginnings of publishing activities are tied in the territory of Slovakia. In the second part of the study, she focuses on Catholic Revival literature published in Bratislava in the seventeenth century, which played an important role in implementing Catholic reforms in Hungary.

The 550th anniversary of printing in Poland is approaching. The author recalls a series of articles from 1974–1977, long lost in the memory of printers and bibliologists, published on the occasion of the 500th anniversary in “Biuletyn Poligraficzny” (Graphic Arts Bulletin). The articles in the series, entitled From the history of printing, were written by bibliologists, archivists and researchers of the history of crafts and industry. They created a collection of texts worth familiarizing to contemporary students and academic lecturers. “Biuletyn Poligraficzny” was published in a small circulation and was a typical industry magazine. It has been preserved in a few libraries and knowledge of its existence is scarce today.

typographic design, the history of book, the art of printing
Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to present the problem of typographic design in the studies on Polish books printed until the 18th century. Although some of the ideas of Polish bibliologists have closely corresponded with new directions in French and Anglo-American bibliography, they have never resulted in such books as: Apparition du livre by Febvre-Martin, Gutenberg Galaxy by McLuhan, Printing Press as an Agent of Change by Eisenstein or Histoire de l’édition française. In Polish book studies, the issue of typography was raised essentially to confirm or establish the provenance of a print or to demonstrate the existence of many variants of an edition. In the second decade of the 20th century, in opposition to the ideas represented e.g. by Jan Ptaśnik, who postulated mainly the examination of historical documents, Kazimierz Piekarski worked out the so-called “typographic method” of book studies, which consisted in the analysis, description and creating the catalogue of printing types and typographic material employed in the examined prints. This method was successfully used in the series Polonia Typographica Saeculi Sedecimi, which Piekarski initialised in 1936. While the idea to evaluate and compare the aesthetic value of production of different printers were present in Polish bibliography, they could not, nevertheless, be realised before the second world war. In the second half of the 20th century researchers focused, among others questions, on: paper, bookbinding, readers, publicity, musical prints, bookselling, history of libraries and printers, but the issue of typographic design was only discussed as an exception. Making an attempt to characterise and estimate the visual aspect of Polish books printed before the end of the 18th century requires difficult study not only in bibliography, but also in the history of literature, culture and art. Works such as: Encyklopedia wiedzy o książce, Słownik pracowników książki polskiej,Drukarze dawnej Polski, a recently published bibliography of books printed by Franciszek Cezary the older, as well as already mentioned Polonia Typographica... and numerous articles (some of them concerning precisely e.g. title-pages or printers’ devices) remain a useful source of knowledge. However, Polish scientific vocabulary in this subject is still deficient and sometimes a researcher could find it indispensable to create a new term him- or herself. The author of this paper had a similar experience during her studies on the typography of prints published in sixteenth-century Cracow by Florian Ungler and Maciej Wirzbięta. The other problem she had to deal with was the creation of an original database, which allowed her to collect, research and present data in a much simpler, faster and more comfortable way. Comparative studies of selected prints published in Cracow in the first and the second half of the 16th century have shown a development of local typography and book design during this period, including changes in book architecture, typographic material and page layout. They also indicated the introduction and perfection of multiple helpful elements of a book, like pagination or foliation, indexes, errata, notes etc., as well as an establishment of some patterns of composition for editions de luxe and “series”. Despite many attempts, including those mentioned in this paper, the issue of typographic design of Polish books printed before the 18th century remains mostly unknown. Simultaneously, the general interest in modern book design in Poland has greatly increased over the last few years and creating the layout of one’s own book has become more and more popular. It is therefore extremely important to study the art of our predecessors and try to understand what they wanted to teach us in their own language of “black-art”.

Opis:
Został on skonfrontowany z obecnym stanem wiedzy o oficynie Jana Hallera.
This article discusses the volume of parchment and paper copies of the Statute by Jan Łaski. The problem is approached by the author within two aspects. The one aims at presenting and systemising various opinions, still functioning in the literature, on the number of printed copies. The earliest mention of the printed volume of the Statute, given by Tadeusz Czacki towards the end of the eighteenth century, is challenged and confronted with the present state of knowledge on Jan Haller’s printing office. The tendency to support the view on the low volume of the edition of the Statute in successive publications is discussed and explained. The other aspect of the issue in question is the considerations on the decidedly separate functions that the parchment and paper copies were to perform, their intended use and potentially different financial support for the editions in either writings. In addition, the author gives his own estimations on the probable number of printed copies, using the available sources and the copies of the Statute that have been preserved until our times.

The article analyses the unique copy of the old Polish catholic hymn book Pieśni nabożne na święta uroczyste według porządku Kościoła ś. katolickiego na cały rok z wielką pilnością zebrane [Songs of piety and devotion...] published in Cracow in 1627 and found at the library at Escorial in Spain. The book, apparently the first known printed Polish catholic extensive hymn book, contained over 140 songs, in Polish and Latin, including works written by Jan Kochanowski and Mikołaj Rej. The article also describes later editions of the hymn book. This is a particularly important book in the history of Polish culture because it was repeatedly republished in different printing offices, not only Catholic, under the same or slightly changed title as late as until the nineteenth century. Numerous editions of the hymn book constitute a valuable source for the study of Polish Catholic hymns as they make it possible to follow and trace the chronology of works, their textual variations and the popularity of particular songs or hymns within a particular time frame, as well as their range of influence and regional occurrence.

A material basis for the study is the first Polish language edition of Księgi o gospodarstwie by Piotr Krescentyn from 1549 (Cracow, Helena Unglerowa). The study led to the formulation of the following conclusions: 1) the variancy biał- // białł- is most likely of Great Polish origin; 2) the variancy miestce // miesce confirmed in the prints from the 16th century has a graphical character motivated by technical factors (typesetting); 3) the distribution of the analysed phonetic variants in Księgi… is not equal; 4) the supreme degree of normalization of the studied variancies has been confirmed in the combinations R–Cc; 5) variant conditions, non-normalized, appeared in the parts: Cresc293–384 and CrescDd–[0]C; 6) a greater part of the textual space of the historical text–from the combination A to the combination Cc– reveals Great Polish features; the remaining part–the combination Dd–Ii and the initial chapters–reveal evident Little Polish features.
