    In my paper I intend to uncover the relationship between ethics and literature. The aforementioned issue is connected to ’ethical turn’ — new orientation in literary studies, which was introduced in the nineties of 20th century. In order to uncover its source of inspiration, I refer to Lévinas’s works, such as Reality and its Shadow, The poet’s vision, Totality and Infinity, Otherwise than Being. I advocate the view that not only Lévinas’s concept of language, but also his account of poetry and responsibility underlie ethical criticism. Therefore, they are regarded as crucial to understand this new approach to literary studies. To illustrate my thesis, I attempt to interpret literary works, i.e. Wordsworth’s and Coetzee’s in light of Lévinas’s concepts.

    The paper presents an analysis of Ewa Lipska’s poem Albatros i grawer [‘The Albatross and the Engraver’], which is a rare example of evoking a work of graphic art in a poem. The metaphors used in the text, exploiting the field of meaning related to graphics, become the basis for metaliterary reflection. Important interpretative contexts indicated in the article are, on one hand, the history of graphic art and its technical arcana, and on the other, the poem The Albatross by Charles Baudelaire, alluded to in the poem and, by the same token, modernist ideas about the art and the artist. The poem’s consideration of the problem of ‘a negative’ and ‘an imprint’ leads to questions about the relationship between art and reality, a relationship which, radically transformed in the modern era, demands an ethical evaluation, just as the poem suggests.

    The article is a philippic aimed against so-called ethical criticism and the aesthetic attitude in literary studies. At the same time, however, its purpose is also to defend the autonomy and self-contained value of artistic works, which are devastated by miscellaneous “etisms”. The article fits squarely into the more clearly visible, within literary studies, departure from ethical research and return to the text as such, which stems from the recognition that ethics (in plural, since there is no universal moral philosophy) are, after all, ideologies and, in their logic, only impose stipulated ideas upon others. And this is an extraordinary paradox, when noble assumptions turn out to be inconsistent with their implementations. Surprisingly, with each ethical reading, an artistic text becomes the weaker one, less significant and even unimportant. Naturally, the choice of aesthetics is always subject to accusations. And it may also be considered as an ethical choice, i.e. ideological in its nature. After all, even Malevich’s white square was once regarded as unethical since it was argued that such works, through denial of participation, support power systems which are considered (not for all) to be evil. What can one say to that? Maybe that no case is known when aficionados of abstract painting wished to adapt, forbid, force or impose something upon those who prefer different types of paintings or dislike any kinds of painting at all. The situation is different when it comes to ethicists, as we can see in everyday life. They usually have only one opinion – their own. And therefore, this article is not aimed at imposing anything upon anybody.
    Artykuł jest filipiką skierowaną przeciwko tak zwanej krytyce etycznej oraz etycznemu nastawieniu w badaniach literaturoznawczych. Jednocześnie jego celem jest obrona autonomii i samoistnej wartości dzieł artystycznych, dewastowanych przez rozmaite etyzmy. Wpisuje się on w coraz wyraźniejszy we współczesnym literaturoznawstwie odwrót od badań etycznych i powrót do tekstu jako takiego. Jest to wynikiem rozpoznania, że etyki (w liczbie mnogiej, nie ma bowiem etyki uniwersalnej) to ostatecznie ideologie i swej logice są jedynie narzucaniem określonych idei innym. Jest to niesamowity paradoks – szlachetne założenia stają się niezgodne ze swymi realizacjami. Co zaskakujące, w takim, etycznym, odczytaniu każdorazowo tekst artystyczny staje się tym słabszym, mniej istotnym, wręcz – nieważnym. Oczywiście wybór estetyki zawsze jest narażony na zarzuty. Sam może być uznany za wybór etyczny, zatem ideologiczny. W końcu nawet biały kwadrat Malewicza został uznany za nieetyczny, ponieważ takie prace, jak dowodzono, poprzez odmowę uczestnictwa wspierają systemy władzy uznawane przez (nigdy wszystkich) za złe. Co na to można odpowiedzieć? Może to, że nie jest znany przypadek, by zwolennicy malarstwa abstrakcyjnego chcieli tym, którzy wolą malarstwo inne lub nie lubią obrazów w ogóle, coś nakazać, coś zakazać, do czegoś zmusić, coś odrzucić, coś przyjąć. Inaczej – obserwujemy to w codziennym doświadczeniu – z etykami. Ci najczęściej mają jedną rację – swoją. Dlatego ten tekst niczego nikomu narzucić nie pragnie.

    Kategoria „kompetencja” jest wykorzystywana od stosunkowo niedawnego czasu, gdyż dopiero od końca XX wieku, do formułowania teleologii wychowania moralnego. Mimo popularności tego pojęcia jest ono nieostre – zmienia sens wraz ze zmianą teorii filozoficznej, w ramach której jest definiowane. W artykule próbuję ująć kompetencje etyczno-moralne w kontekście neotomistycznej filozofii moralnej. Analizy mają trzy etapy. W pierwszym dookreślam miejsce kategorii kompetencji w namyśle nad rozwojem moralnym i jego wsparciem w wychowaniu, zestawiając kategorię kompetencji z charakterystyczną dla myśli tomistycznej kategorią cnoty moralnej, a dokładniej z podstawową cnotą rozumu – roztropnością. Efektem analiz jest postulat odróżnienia kompetencji etycznych od kompetencji moralnych. W drugim punkcie udzielam odpowiedzi na tytułowe pytanie o istotę kompetencji etyczno-moralnych, wskazując najpierw, jakie znaczenie dla zdobywania wiedzy etyczno-moralnej ma wydawanie sądów, a jakie rozumowanie. W ostatnim punkcie zastanawiam się nad możliwymi deformacjami w rozwoju owych kompetencji, skupiając się na konsekwencjach oderwania rozumowania od sądzenia, co stanowi domenę racjonalistycznej kultury Zachodu, w której szczególnie cenione jest rozumowanie.
    The ‘skills’ category used to form the teleology of moral education has been used for a relatively short time, only since the end of the twentieth century. Although popular, this concept is still vague - it changes its meaning with the type of philosophical theory which it is defined by. In this article I try to place ethical and moral skills in the context of neo-Thomistic moral philosophy. The analyses are performed in three stages. In the first stage I outline more precisely the place of the skills category in the moral development considerations and moral development support in education. This skills category is compared with the Thomistic category of moral virtue - more specifically with its fundamental virtue of reason – prudence. The analysis results in the proposal to distinguish between ethical and moral skills. The second stage refers to the article’s title and concerns the essence of ethical and moral skills. Firstly, the importance of judgement and reasoning for ethical knowledge and morality acquisition is indicated. The last stage presents the possible deformations in skills development. It focuses on the consequences of separating reasoning from judgement. This is the domain of the Western rationalist culture which particularly values reasoning.
