Performed analyses show that companies around the world are actively investing in blockchain technology. This technology has been found to be positively recognized in business by executives, however companies, while planning its implementation, face numerous barriers which mainly arise from a lack of legal regulations, and technical problems. On the other hand, blockchain technology can be used in many areas of company activities, especially in the supply chain.

Opis:
Research background: The year 2016 ended the period of the migration from national payment services to the SEPA instruments. At the same time, however, it has become apparent that some problems remained unresolved. Overcoming them requires finding suitable technological solutions. The potential of the distributed ledger technology (DLT) is currently being explored by the financial sector and its implementation may affect the SEPA schemes in a variety of dimensions. Purpose of the article: The aim of the article was to determine the potential impact that the DLT transfer to the banking sector may have on the functioning of the SEPA in the future. The paper presents SEPA?s assumptions and the current status of the project as well as the DTL?s concept.  It describes the technology transfer implications for the banking industry and compares the SEPA schemes currently operating with those based on the DLT. It also indicates the opportunities and threats that are the consequence of the new technology implementation and examines their significance for the SEPA. Methods: In the article, a qualitative analysis is supplemented with a quantitative one. Elements of descriptive statistics have been used to characterize the functioning of the main pillars of the SEPA schemes.  The final conclusions are based on the comparative analysis of the SEPA schemes and developed DLT applications. Findings & value added: The existing problems might be solved by supplementing the SEPA payment schemes currently operating with the applications based on the DLT. The systems that will be subsequently developed will provide the required real-time processing and a global reach. They will also extend the functionalities of the SEPA schemes with the ability to transfer other currencies. The implementation of this technology will result not only in new financial products but, first of all, in creating new business models. Consequently, we may expect a modification of the currently operating SEPA schemes, based on their supplementation rather than total replacement in a short time frame.

Opis:
Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLTs) have become a topic that is being more and more discussed in political, economic and scientific discourses. , also within economic sciences. Their potential to redefine many processes in the economy is growing, and there is a consensus in the scientific community about their revolutionary character. Blockchain is one of the DLTs and one of the breakthrough technologies distinctive for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The aim of the paper is to draw attention to the potential of blockchain technology for developing countries and how it can contribute to the improvement of quality of life and fighting poverty. Following Schwab’s thesis, “the extent to which society embraces technological innovation is a major determinant of progress”. Therefore, developing countries should not disregard the potential of blockchain technology that can solve a lot of current problems and provide access to previously unreachable services with a relatively low cost (both implementation and subsequent maintenance cost).

Qualitative comparative analysis (QCA)
Opis:
Aim/purpose – Blockchain is a distributed database system widely popular in social and business spheres. As a result, interest in blockchain technology is utilised by listed companies, who, thanks to the announcement of blockchain application, record a significant increase in the share value. The aim of this publication is to analyse the situation with regard to companies listed on the New Connect market, who over the last two years, expressed an interest in blockchain technology in their communication with investors. Design/methodology/approach – Observing the range of applications of this technology in business, a study was conducted to check if and how the information on using the blockchain technology affects the quotations of the New Connect market listed companies that applied it. Qualitative comparative analysis (QCA), a method developed by Ragin was chosen as a complementary research method. An underlying assumption of QCA is that social phenomena involve complex causality. Findings – In most cases, companies releasing blockchain application announcements counted on fast and high growth of the quotations. In most of the analysed cases, blockchain technology utilisation announcements were not fulfilled. This could be a result of conscious tactics towards investors, a rapid increase in quotations and/or a lack of competence and resources to implement blockchain technology. Investors should analyse the business activity of a company before investing. Research implications/limitations – Research is conducted with a small sample of 11 companies from the New Connect market in Poland. Consequently, to obtain more general results, it is recommended for future research to use a larger sample such as other stock exchanges in Europe and USA. Originality/value/contribution – The research revealed that new blockchain technology is used by some listed companies on the New Connect market for short-term share growth. Investors are becoming increasingly more attracted to the fashion for the new blockchain technology without understanding its mechanism. Accordingly, this study will also attempt to explain such a mechanism.

Opis:
This paper addresses the problem posed by the attempt to define, on the basis of the draft Regulation on cryptoassets markets and amending Directive (EU) 2019/1937 (MiCA), the concept of DLT. The necessity of defining within the scope of cyberspace law as a public law is first positioned. A discussion of the concept itself according to the technological definition was made in order to point out as clearly as possible the three models used in the formulation of the legal concept of DLT. Proposals from specialised international organisations are cited. The models presented are discussed using the examples of the legislation of Japan, Malta and the United States, in order to show the danger that can potentially be associated with each of them and the solution used in the MiCA. The study seeks to answer questions about the technological definition of DLT, the necessity of its inclusion in a piece of legislation, the possible forms of definition used in selected legislation and the appropriateness of the chosen modality within the European Union. The study concludes that the definition used in the MiCA does not provide adequate stability and security in the EU system, where the use of a model corresponding to the solutions adopted in Malta was considered the most appropriate, taking into account the axiological basis of the draft regulation. The work is based on a theoretical-legal method and comparativism, with minimal use of axiology and dogmatics.

Opis:
The Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) is a peer-to-peer model of sharing data among collaborating parties in a decentralized manner. An example of DLT is a blockchain where data form blocks in an append-only chain. Software architecture description usually comprises multiple views. The paper concentrates on the Deployment view of the DLT solution within the 1+5 architectural views model. The authors have proposed Unified Modeling Language (UML) extensibility mechanisms to describe the needed additional semantic notation to model deployment details. The paper covers both the network and node levels. The proposed stereotypes and tagged values have enriched UML Deployment diagram. We have gathered those modeling elements in dedicated UML Profile for Distributed Ledger Deployment. We have applied the profile to model Deployment view of a renewable energy management system that uses R3 Corda framework. The system records information about inbound and outbound energy to/from renewable energy grid.

The financial crisis of 2007/08 had shattered the global financial system and led – besides a flood of regulations – to a wide range of new concepts and business models. One of these new concepts was “Bitcoin”, a private digital monetary system, which is characterized by decentralization, transparency and immutability. To date the underlying Blockchain or Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) has evolved and offers an extensive range of possibilities, particularly in the financial industry. So far, an EU-wide legal basis for Blockchain or DLT applications and services is missing. France and the Principality of Liechtenstein took a step forward and adopted national laws trying to offer legal certainty in this field. This article aims to provide a comparison of the two acts and underline the similarities and differences.
