The paper presents the main trends in the development of seaside resorts worldwide and in Poland. Particular attention is called to the spatial aspects of this development. Based on their morphological differentiation, two forms of seaside resort in Poland can be distinguished: locations with a clearly heterogeneous spatial-functional structure, in which areas used for tourism are adjacent to others; and locations with a heterogeneous spatial-functional structure in which the tourism function is, to a certain extent, spatially isolated.

In this day and age, overtourism has become a burning issue and a considerable challenge to tackle. It will remain on the rise as long as the tourism industry continues to grow. It appears impossible to stop or eliminate. Therefore, it only seems reasonable to adopt proper management strategies. Since no comprehensive solution has been elaborated as of yet, tourist destinations have started to take their own measures in order to handle the issue. The objective of the article is to identify the underlying characteristics of overtourism with regard to the strongly promoted concept of sustainable development of tourism, and to analyze the methods of handling overtourism, following the example of Venice. The issue of excessive tourist traffic in the center of Venice is very well-known. The problem is serious enough to serve as a case study in the context of tourist destination management.

In this article we will describe the government’s role in the development of rural tourism from a global perspective, while also addressing some key elements of the current implementation status set by government policies concerning the development of rural areas which have stimulated the increase in diversity of economic activities, resulting in an improvement of the living conditions for the rural community. In this context, rural tourism was considered an activity with the potential to grow the economy, create employment and retain the rural population, thus addressing the recent economic and social changes, while also supporting the growth of these rural areas meeting the new needs and social ambitions. In Madeira Island, the State involvement in the development of rural tourism has played a decisive role in three predominant fronts: in formulating and executing in an orderly manner the regional and national policies; in creating tourist areas, but also regulating and managing them. On the other hand, there is still a long way to go, therefore this article has another purpose: to demonstrate the relevance of elaborating a Strategic Development Plan for Rural Tourism in Madeira Island, given the lack of specific orientations for this type of tourism. In the pursuit of our goals we used the combination of qualitative and quantitative methods in the absence of studies of this nature on the island of Madeira, such as the launch of semi-structured interviews, field work and bibliographical and documentary research. The first objective was to identify the State’s role in the development of rural tourism on a regional and national level and the second, to demonstrate the relevance of the release of the Strategic Development Plan for Rural Tourism in Madeira.
W niniejszym artykule opisujemy rolę rządu w rozwoju turystyki wiejskiej z perspektywy globalnej, jednocześnie omawiając także niektóre kluczowe elementy obecnego statusu wdrożenia polityki rządowej w zakresie rozwoju obszarów wiejskich, która pobudziła wzrost zróżnicowania działalności ekonomicznej, czego skutkiem jest poprawa warunków życia społeczności wiejskiej. W tym kontekście turystyka wiejska została uznana za działalność posiadającą potencjał dla rozwoju gospodarki, tworzenia miejsc pracy i utrzymania populacji wiejskiej, nie pozostając bez wpływu na ostatnie zmiany ekonomiczne i społeczne, a jednocześnie wspierając wzrost tych obszarów wiejskich, które realizują nowe potrzeby i społeczne ambicje. Na Maderze zaangażowanie państwa w rozwój turystyki wiejskiej odegrało decydującą rolę w trzech głównych wymiarach: w formułowaniu i porządkowaniu polityk regionalnych i narodowych, w tworzeniu obszarów turystycznych, ale także w regulowaniu ich i zarządzaniu nimi. Z drugiej strony droga, którą należy przejść, jest wciąż długa, w związku z czym artykuł ma jeszcze jeden cel: wykazać istotność opracowania Planu Rozwoju Strategicznego dla Turystyki Wiejskiej na Wyspie Madera, przyjmując, że brakuje konkretnego ukierunkowania tego typu turystyki. Dla osiągnięcia naszych celów zastosowaliśmy kombinację metod jakościowych i ilościowych z uwzględnieniem braku badań tego typu na wyspie Madera. Składało się na nią zapoczątkowanie wywiadów częściowo ustrukturyzowanych, badań terenowych oraz badań bibliograficznych i dokumentalnych. Pierwszym celem była identyfikacja roli państwa w rozwoju turystyki wiejskiej, drugim zaś ‒ wykazanie znaczenia opracowania Planu Rozwoju Strategicznego dla Turystyki Wiejskiej na Wyspie Madera.

In addition to acquainting the public with the culture of a particular region, cultural tourism creates economic opportunities. Taking into account various tourist sites, museums are definitely among the most important ones. In Iran, the National Museum is one of the most important museums because of its rich collection of historical monuments related to the ancient Persia and Islamic periods. The authors of this article analyse the role of the National Museum of Iran in the development of the country’s cultural tourism. The analysis is based on information obtained from the database of the Iranian Cultural Heritage Organization and the National Museum of Iran. Confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling were employed for data analysis. The results confirm the importance of the National Museum of Iran in the development of cultural tourism.

Turystyka jest postrzegana przez coraz większą liczbę mieszkańców różnych krajów jako szansa na rozwój lokalnej gospodarki i poprawę jakości życia. Mimo że powiat gryfiński dysponuje bardzo dużymi walorami turystycznymi zarówno o charakterze przyrodniczym, jak i kulturowym, a ponadto ma korzystne położenie geograficzne, turystyka rozwija się bardzo powoli. W celu ustalenia przyczyn istniejącej sytuacji podjęto próbę zbadania opinii lokalnej społeczności na ten temat za pomocą metody zogniskowanych wywiadów grupowych. Uzyskane wyniki wskazują na podstawowe znaczenie postaw mieszkańców wobec rozwoju turystyki w regionie.
Tourism is perceived by more and more people in different countries as a chance for the development of their local economy and a chance for an improvement of the quality of life. In spite of the fact that there are many touristic attractions, both natural and cultural, in the Gryfino County, and in spite of its attractive geographical situation the pace of its touristic development is rather slow. In order to investigate the reasons for the situation research has been initiated based on the method of focused group interviews. The results indicate that the basic factor is the attitude of the inhabitants of the region towards the development of tourism.

Współczesna turystyka korzysta z międzynarodowych procesów integracyjnych i globalizacyjnych. Głównymi czynnikami rozwoju turystyki są: stabilizacja polityczna, wzrost gospodarczy i wzrost zamożności społeczeństw, coraz większa ilość czasu wolnego, a także postęp w dziedzinie techniki. Turystykę uważa się za ważny sektor gospodarki europejskiej. Europa jest najczęściej odwiedzanym regionem świata. W 2015 r. jej udział w światowym ruchu turystycznym wynosił 51,2%, a w światowych wpływach z turystyki – 35,8%. Integracja państw europejskich w dziedzinie politycznej, gospodarczej, społecznej, ekologicznej czy edukacyjnej ma istotny wpływ na funkcjonowanie i rozwój gospodarki turystycznej.
The modern tourism profi ts from the international processes of integration and globalization. The main factors of tourism development is political stability, economic growth and the increase in wealth of societies, the increase in leisure time, as well as advances in technology. Tourism is considered to be an important sector of the European economy. Percentage of Europe in global tourism was 51.2% in 2015. Europe is the most visited region of the world, which reached 35.8% of global world revenue from tourism in 2015. The integration of the European countries in the fi eld of policy and economy as well as in the social, ecological and educational area has a signifi cant impact on the functioning and development of the tourist economy.

The purpose of this article is to fill in the gap in knowledge about early academic work on tourism which had developed first of all in Europe. The author has tried to achieve this aim by conducting a retrospective analysis of chronological and institutional-methodological aspects of the evolution of tourism studies. As a result, he has distinguished two aspects (each divided into two): 1) chronological: a period of precursors and a formal academic period; 2) methodological: research within one discipline and interdisciplinary research. The results enabled the author to formulate general conclusions for critical discussion. It primarily concerns the domination of the English language and the Anglo-American tradition in the literature which is the reason why the global picture of achievements in tourism studies is incomplete and thus imperfect. The accomplishments of smaller, yet well-established, “national schools” are often ignored and remain almost unknown internationally. The author hopes that the article will be an encouragement to undertake research on early tourism studies in individual countries and to publish its results internationally as this will broaden knowledge of the origins of academic work in tourism.

Całość kończą wnioski oraz postulaty mające na celu ułatwienie rozwoju turystyki przez jednostki samorządu terytorialnego. Tekst oparto na literaturze administracyjnego prawa materialnego i prawa samorządowego oraz aktach prawnych aktualnych na dzień 28 lutego 2014 roku.
The text presents place of development of tourism among duties delegated by the legislator to the local governments. First part of the article points what obligations and rights were given to communities, counties and regions in terms of development of tourism. Second part confront that with described case of Władysławowo showing some legal and administrative instruments, including zone planning, as well as actions taken by local government for stimulating and supporting tourism development, including legal base for it, in this city by the sea. All is finished with conclusions proposals which shall simplify tourism development made by local governments. Text is based on legal literature of material administrative law and communal law literature and as well as acts of law valid on February 28st of 2014.

Celem niniejszej publikacji było przedstawienie pomysłu tworzenia Zielonych Szlaków Greenways jako czynnika pobudzającego i rozwijającego turystykę. W pracy dokonano prezentacji idei i głównych przesłanek Zielonych Szlaków Greenways. Ukazano ich znaczenie; opisano korzenie i rozwój Zielonych Szlaków Greenways na świecie, w Europie i w Polsce. Analizie poddano jeden z przykładów Zielonych Szlaków Greenways zlokalizowanych w Polsce – Szlak Odry. Wskazano pozytywny wpływ Szlaku Odry na rozwój turystyki w wybranych, mniejszych miejscowościach leżących na tym szlaku. Przywołano najważniejsze osiągnięcia i sukcesy w tej dziedzinie. Tezą postawioną w pracy było założenie, że Zielone Szlaki Greenways mogą stanowić istotny czynnik pobudzający rozwój turystyki, zwłaszcza w skali regionalnej. Dotyczy to w szczególności miejsc i miejscowości położonych na obszarach o mniejszym potencjale turystycznym. Artykuł powstał przy wykorzystaniu zwartych materiałów książkowych, czasopism, jak również informacji netograficznych i kontaktów osobistych z koordynatorami Zielonych Szlaków Greenways. Metoda badawcza zastosowana w publikacji to krytyka piśmiennicza i wywiad telefoniczny. Wyniki badań potwierdzają postawioną tezę, że Zielone Szlaki Greenways pozytywnie wpływają na sytuację i rozwój turystyki.
The aim of this publication is to present the idea of creating Greenways as a factor stimulating and developing tourism. The paper presents the idea and the main premises of Greenways. It shows their significance. The publication describes the roots and the development of Greenways in the world, in Europe and in Poland. An analysis is made of one of the examples of Greenways in Poland—the Oder River trail. The paper presents a positive influence of the Oder River Trail on the development of tourism in selected smaller towns located on the trail. The most important achievements and successes in this area are shown. The thesis formulated in the paper was the assumption that Greenways can be an important factor stimulating the development of tourism, particularly at the regional scale. In particular, it concerns places and towns with lower tourism potential. The paper was created with the use of nonserial book materials, journals, as well as netographic information and personal contacts with Greenways coordinators. The research method used in the publication was literature criticism and a telephone interview. The research findings positively verified the formulated thesis that Greenways positively influence the situation and development of tourism.

Celem badań była analiza i ocena działalności samorządu terytorialnego Żyrardowa w aspekcie wykorzystania XIX w. osady fabrycznej. Badania pilotażowe przeprowadzono w 2011 r. w formie wywiadu skategoryzowanego z 18 respondentami: pracownikami Urzędu Miasta, Radnymi oraz gestorami bazy turystycznej. Otrzymane wyniki pozwoliły przyjąć założenie, że osada fabryczna to unikatowy na skalę Europy obszar poprzemysłowy, którego rozwój pozytywnie wpłynie na aktywizację turystyki weekendowej i postindustrialnej.
The aim of the study was the analysis and assessment of the activities of self-governmental authorities of Żyrardów. In the study the aspect of taking advantage of the 19th-century factory settlement were taken into account. The pilot study was performed in 2011 in a form of questionnaire interview with 18 respondents: the employees of the Town Council of Żyrardów, Town Councilors and managers of the tourist base. Thanks to the results gained it was possible to assume that the factory settlement of Żyrardów is a unique in Europe postindustrial area, the development of which will positively influence the activation of the weekend and postindustrial tourism.

The aim of the study was to present plans (up to 2030) for the development of infrastructure and tourism activities in the Polish landscape parks located in the area of the State Forests’ administration. At the end of 2013, a survey was conducted the results of which were verified and their analysis completed in 2014. The questionnaire was sent to the directorates of all 122 parks. 70.5% of the directorates replied to the open question inquiring about their plans and demands for tourist activities (including educational tourism) and recreation. These were then correlated to parks in areas under the State Forests’ administration. The most commonly proposed/planned actions by the directorates in cooperation with the Forest Districts are: construction of new educational paths (in 41.9% of parks), maintaining the existing ones (24.4%) and the organization of tourism/recreation and educational events (22.1%). The largest share of proposed/planned actions without the cooperation of the Forest Districts comes from the creation of new routes/trails, parking lots, etc. along with their equipment (36.0%), construction of tourist infrastructure (bins, benches, tables, shelters, fire circles, sightseeing towers, bridges, 18.6%) and the issuing of maps, brochures, guides or other publications (17.4%). However, it is of particular importance to take the need for nature conservation in the development of tourism and recreation in areas of landscape parks into account. The literature provides a number of helpful solutions. Furthermore, such activity requires broad cooperation supported by external funds especially between the parks, Forest Districts and municipalities. It is also important to continue the environmental education of both, visitors and locals, as well as the promotion of eco-tourism and responsible use of the environment.

The objective of this paper was to explain the concept of business tourism, characterize its current status in Poland with particular emphasis on Wrocław, as well as indicate major factors responsible for its development in this town. Due to an extensive scope of the discussed problems, the paper was divided into four separate parts. In the first part, the article presents a theoretical approach towards analysis of business tourism. The second part characterizes business tourism development in Poland, with main focus on Wrocław. It provides a comparative analysis based on statistical data. The third part, following the concept developed by J. Swarbrooke and S. Horner, offers the discussion of the leading determinants affecting business tourism development in Wrocław. On their basis, in part four, recommendations for entities developing business tourism in Wrocław were presented. Autor wskazuje na różnorodność kulturowo-przyrodniczą ziem mazowieckich i źródła zwiększania atrakcyjności tego obszaru dla potencjalnych turystów krajowych i zagranicznych. Szczególna uwaga zwrócona jest na konieczność intensyfikacji środków oddziaływania w zakresie właściwej informacji, a zwłaszcza innowacyjnej reklamy i skutecznej promocji.
The idea of including the inspirations of different social forces, prepared by local government and the authority’s factors are considered on the background of general development of Mazovia. The author points the cultural and natural variety of Mazovia region and the sources of its attractiveness for tourism. The most important things are proper information, innovative advertising and effective promotion in this matter.
