Monitoring of trees in urban areas can be conducted using remote sensing, but should be supported by field measurements. The article aims to present the research method used to evaluate discolouration and defoliation of trees and tree damage in the city of Białystok in Poland. The analyses were done using AISA hyperspectral images. Field measurements encompassed determining the locations, species and levels of discolouration and defoliation of trees. Remote sensing indices of vegetation were calculated and correlated with the field-measured values of discolouration and defoliation. Based on that, values of discolouration and defoliation were calculated and evaluated against the field studies. The RMSE of the acquired data was around 16%. Using parameter values, a map of tree damage was drawn up. Based on the analysis, it can be stated that a significant number of trees is undamaged, although a large portion of the trees falls into the warning class.

Forests in Kampinos National Park contain some of the most valuable tree populations in Poland. Particularly interesting are stands of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) that are more than 130-years-old. Periodic observations of the health of tree crowns in these stands facilitates a wide range of research investigations. This article evaluates statistical relationships between allometric features of trees and the occurrence and severity of crown defoliation. Observations were made of 5 pine populations in 2017 and 2019, in which detailed data were collected for 250 trees. The percentage loss of the assimilation apparatus and level of stand damage were calculated. The results revealed a significant increase in defoliation between 2017 and 2019. The deterioration of crown condition was particularly evident on the most fertile sites. The degree of crown damage was not correlated with tree height or diameter. The greatest increase in defoliation between 2017 and 2019 was observed for the most severely damaged trees growing on fertile sites. This study contributes analyses aimed at correlating the allometric features of a stand with its health. Such information is valuable as it describes the status of the analysed stands, as well as providing information about how trees have responded to environmental conditions. In this study, crown defoliation coincided with a period of drought in Poland, which appears to have affected pine stands. For these reasons, the results are of both scientific and practical value.

Ash is an important component of European forest ecosystems. In recent years the stability of the species has been threatened by the fungus Hymenoscyphus fraxineus (T. Kowalski) Baral, Queloz & Hosoya 2014 (anamorph Chalara fraxinea). Infested stands die out dynamically, and forest management does not have the seeds to restore future populations. Seed orchards may be a suitable place, where the seed can be obtained, and through which the results of immunological selection can be implemented. To reduce the infestation of seed orchards by H. fraxineus, autumn leaves that are the source of inoculum can be removed. Hence, the main aim of the study was to assess the impact of the removal of fallen leaves on the health status of clonal seed orchard of ash. The studied seed orchard is located in the Łomża Forest District (N 22.06, E 53.31), observations were made on 237 strains of 31 clones of parents. The health of ash trees based on the defoliation of crowns was assessed in August, in years 2018−2019. In order to reduce the source of H. fraxineus inoculum in the next vegetation season, an agrotechnical procedure was carried out on the orchard site to completely remove fallen ash leaves. ANOVA was used to determine the effect of this procedure on the health of ash crowns. A significant reduction in the level of defoliation (F=12.89) was demonstrated over the years of observation. The reaction of individual clones to the procedure was not uniform. The best result was obtained for clones with low and stable defoliation levels in strains. This result confirms that systematic application of agrotechnical treatment has a beneficial effect on the health and regeneration capabilities of selected clones. This result is as expected and shows the potential to carry out immunological selection of ash.

Until recently, the level of industrial air pollution in the Sudetes (a mountain range extending on the Czech Republic and Poland border) was very high.This caused a large-scale forest decline, especially in the western part of the Polish Sudetes: in the Izerskie and Karkonosze Mts. An analysis of data on fir defoliation in that area, collected directly after the period of heavy industrial pollution, showed a clear dependence of the degree of defoliation of the primary crown on canopy density: the lower the density, the higher the degree of defoliation.

Opis:
Restoration of grassland habitats useful for wildlife is an intervention often carried out in various marginal environments (such as some mountainous areas) where agriculture and grassland management have undergone deep changes in recent decades. To assess some of these interventions, a study was conducted in an Apennine reserve in Central Italy, where some grassland areas recovered through different techniques were identified, represented by shrub clearing followed by sowing of a forage mixture and shrub clearing alone, which were compared with natural areas on which no interventions were carried out. Several parameters related to the botanical composition and quality of the recovered pastoral resources were analysed. In addition, in three different experimental sites, further in-depth investigations were carried out to assess the actual animal frequentation and the impact of the in-take of the wild animals present (mainly red deer) on the occurring vegetation. Results highlighted the importance of recovery interventions in these situations, the success of mechanical treatments (even if represented by clearing shrubs alone), and the real appreciation for the recovered areas by wildlife, whose utilisation on different vegetal species could be assessed, highlighting a diverse feeding behaviour for some taxa, compared to domestic animals.

The Gabčíkovo hydroelectric power plant has significantly influenced Danube water regime, thus the condition of floodplain forests in the region. Forest condition has been regularly monitored since 1995 using aerial photos. The subject of this study was to improve the procedure of floodplain forest health evaluation based on digital multispectral aerial images. Firstly, the forest mask was created with overall accuracy 89%, and next, tree health was evaluated using defoliation as health indicator. We applied orthogonal transformation of 4 original bands of multispectral imagery into two-dimensional space. Marginal values of digital numbers (DN) of the first component (New Synthetic Channel – NSC1) were defined by fully foliated willow and poplar. The second component (NSC2) was optimised for damage estimation. Calculated DN values of NSC2 represented a perpendicular distance from the line of DN values of the first component. The distance from the line was proportionate to tree damage extent in a given pixel. We generated linear regression model between pair values of NSC2 and defoliation evaluated for 38 trees in the field, respectively, from aerial photos. A decline prediction resulted in r-square equal 0.86. Finally, we used the model to predict defoliation for each picture element (pixel) of the component NSC2.

In 2002, workers from the Chair of Forest Management of the Poznań Agricultural University carried out crown observations of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees in two working circles – Góra Śląska (Góra Śląska Forest Division) and Wschowa (Włoszakowice Forest Division). The basic of the study comprised experimental plot established in pairs on stands of the IIIrd and IVth age classes. A given experimental plot was made up of 25 trees from the main stand. The purpose of the performed investigations was to ascertain the crown condition of trees from pine stands and to determine whether and what extent the trans−border contamination from Legnica−Głogów Copper Mining Centre has an impact on this contamination.

The research problem of the paper concerned verification whether applicable or known methods of post-harvesting evaluation of the roots of sugar beet may be applied to the assessment of the quality of work of technically varied new machinery for sugar beet harvesting. Tests of machines of varied solutions of working units, in particular a topping unit, were carried out in order to accomplish the objective of the paper. Two self-propelled combine harvesters of Ropa euro-Tiger V8-3 type and Kleine Beetliner Large and two sets for 2-stage harvesting by M.A.C.E (Spain) and Amity (USA) companies were used in the study. Ropa euro-Tiger and Kleine Beetliner Large combine harvesters and M.A.C.E. set were equipped with a beet topper but of a varied topping system, whereas, only a defoliator was used in the set by Amity company. Field research of machines included assessment of the topping quality, losses caused by the broken tip of roots and damages of the lateral surface of roots. Research assumptions were assumed according to the method of the International Institute for Beet Research (I.I.R.B.). Moreover, assessment of the topping quality with the method of the Netherlands Institute of Sugar Beet Research (IRS) and the Institute of Agricultural Engineering of the Bonn University was carried out. Assessment of roots after defoliation was carried out based on the Roller's classification (2010). Based on the research results and analyses which were carried out, it was proved that the methods of measurement of the quality of beet harvesting machines operation are not fully useful for assessment of the introduced technical and technological changes. It mainly concerns the assessment of the roots topping. Thus, two modified methods of assessment of the quality of roots topping were suggested. They may be used both for machines equipped with a topping device and a defoliator.
Problem badawczy pracy dotyczył sprawdzenia, czy obowiązujące lub znane metody oceny pozbiorowej jakości korzeni buraka cukrowego można stosować do oceny jakości pracy zróżnicowanych technicznie nowych maszyn do zbioru buraków cukrowych. Dla zrealizowania celu pracy przeprowadzono badania maszyn o zróżnicowanych rozwiązaniach zespołów roboczych, a w szczególności zespołu ogławiającego. Do badań wyznaczono dwa kombajny samojezdne typu Ropa euro-Tiger V8-3 i Kleine Beetliner Large oraz dwa zestawy do zbioru 2-etapowego firm M.A.C.E. (Hiszpania) i Amity (USA). Kombajny Ropa euro-Tiger i Kleine Beetliner Large oraz zestaw M.A.C.E. były wyposażone w ogławiacz, ale o różnym rozwiązaniu dogławiacza, natomiast w zestawie firmy Amity zastosowano wyłącznie defoliator. Badania polowe maszyn obejmowały ocenę jakości ogłowienia, strat spowodowanych obłamanym końcem korzeni oraz uszkodzeń powierzchni bocznej korzeni. Założenia badawcze przyjęto zgodnie z metodą Międzynarodowego Instytutu Buraka Cukrowego (I.I.R.B.). Wykonano również ocenę jakości ogłowienia metodą Holenderskiego Instytut Buraka Cukrowego (IRS) oraz Instytutu Inżynierii Rolniczej Uniwersytetu w Bonn. Ocenę korzeni po defoliacji przeprowadzono na podstawie klasyfikacji Rollera (2010). Na podstawie wyników badań i przeprowadzonych analiz wykazano, że stosowane obecnie metody pomiaru jakości pracy maszyn do zbioru buraków nie są w pełni przydatne do oceny wprowadzanych zmian technicznych i technologicznych. Dotyczy to przede wszystkim oceny ogłowienia korzeni. Dlatego zaproponowano dwie zmodyfikowane metody oceny jakości ogłowienia korzeni, które można zastosować zarówno do maszyn wyposażonych w ogławiacz, jak i defoliator.

A survey was used to detect the degree of defoliation by applying an simple random sampling design on P3 plots of the SINUS system. Jednym z objawów zamierania drzewostanów dębowych w Europie jest wysoka defoliacja obserwowana u drzew o słabej zdrowotności. Na potrzeby corocznego monitoringu dotkniętych patogenem Phytophtora powierzchni badawczych projektu HESOFF w Zakładzie Teledetekcji Instytutu Lotnictwa podjęto próbę wytworzenia metodyki oceny defoliacji za pomocą lotniczych zdjęć wielospektralnych. W tym celu w lipcu 2015 r. za pomocą Platformy Wielosensorowej QUERCUS.6 wykonano zdjęcia lotnicze badanego kompleksu leśnego (zakres 0,46–0,82 μm). Na podstawie zdjęć wykonano pomiar reflektancji dla każdego z badanych dębów oraz porównano pozyskane w ten sposób dane radiometryczne z ocenionym metodą tradycyjną poziomem defoliacji. Na podstawie uzyskanych korelacji wykazano, że pomiar defoliacji jest możliwy przy zastosowaniu kanałów optycznych: 0,46–0,52 μm oraz 0,67–0,82 μm. Wykazano ponadto, że do poprawnego pomiaru defoliacji zaproponowaną w tym artykule metodą, konieczne jest uwzględnienie typu podszytu, który ma decydujący wpływ na obserwowaną reflektancję.
One of the symptoms of dieback of oak stands in Europe is high defoliation, observed in trees with poor health. For the purposes of annual monitoring (in research project HESOFF) of the research area affected by the pathogen Phytophthora, in the Remote Sensing Department of Institute of Aviation was made attempt to develop a proper methodology for defoliation evaluation with multispectral aerial images use. For this purpose in July 2015 with the use of the Multisensory Platform QUERCUS.6 aerial photos of the test forest complex were made (range: 0.46–0.82 μm). Based on the photos, reflectance measurements for each of investigated oaks were made and acquired parameters have been compared with defoliation level obtained by conventional methods. Based on these correlation has been demonstrated that defoliation measurement is possible with use of optical channels: 0.46–0.52 μm and 0.67–0.82 μm. It was also shown that for correct defoliation measurement with proposed in this article methodology it is necessary to take into account the type of underbrush, which has a decisive influence on the observed reflectance.

The study assesses the damage to silver fir from the canopy layer in the stands of the Świętokrzyskie Mountains (central Poland) using three methods. The suitability of these methods was also analysed by calculating the correlation between increment of the diameter at breast height (DBH) and the level of damage. In total we investigated 240 trees. The first analysed method involves tree defoliation. The mean defoliation of sample accounts for 47.8%, while majority of the trees were found to be within 2nd damage class (fig. 1). Absolute and relative DBH increment does not correlate with tree defoliation strongly (tab.). The next method is based on the assessment of the average tree damage index W that takes into account defoliation, top condition and vitality. In general, analysed trees were found to have reduced height growth and both branching in the top (fig. 2) and central (fig. 3) section of the crown. Inclusion of the secondary crown in the assessment of tree damage resulted in an increase in the vitality of the whole crown (fig. 3). The assessment of damage based on index W showed that largest proportion of trees was within moderate damage and the value of the damage index was lower than in method based exclusively on defoliation. The last method (morphological−incremental) combines the method based on damage index W with DBH increment (index Wz, formula 3). In the period 1971−1985, most of the fir trees reacted negatively to the environment changes (growth reduction), while the proportion of trees with positive responses decreased. In the period 1976−2000, the proportion of trees with negative response decreased, while the proportion of firs with positive and neutral responses increased (fig. 5). The period 2001−2015 faced the dominance of trees showing neutral growth responses, the proportion of trees with positive responses was fairly high, while the proportion of trees with negative responses was the smallest. The highest value of the correlation coefficient (r=–0.661) was found for the correlation between the relative 10−years DBH growth and damage index Wz2(tab.). Of the three discussed damage assessment methods, this method is therefore considered the most accurate.

Opis:
In 2007, crown defoliation of trees was observed in Scots pine stands in the Siemianice Experimental Forest District. The obtained results were used for the analysis of the mean size and variability of the top part and the whole crown of Scots pine in individual experimental plots as well as in the selected age and Kraft’s classes.

Opis:
In the year 2003, tree crown defoliation of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) of the 3rd and 4th age class was assessed on 90 test plots of 25 main crop trees each. This paper presents the analysis and assessment of the significance of differences of the mean tree crown defoliation of different Kraft classes growing in the same damage zones and the mean tree crown defoliation of the same Kraft classes growing in different damage zones (=0.05).
