Opis:
This paper is devoted to the study of a multi-step method with divided differences for solving nonlinear equations in Banach spaces. In earlier studies, hypotheses on the Fréchet derivative up to the sixth order of the operator under consideration is used to prove the convergence of the method. That restricts the applicability of the method. In this paper we extended the applicability of the sixth-order multi-step method by using only hypotheses on the first derivative of the operator involved. Our convergence conditions are weaker than the conditions used in earlier studies. Numerical examples where earlier results cannot be applied to solve equations but our results can be applied are also given in this study.

The research discussed in the article concerned the level of development of agriculture in Poland. The main aim of the study was to verify the hypothesis of convergence of the economic size of farms. The analysis confirmed the existence of -convergence, however, showed no occurrence of σ-convergence and γ-convergence. Based on the results of the analysis of marginal vertical -convergence, Poland was divided into two clubs with different paths of development. In one of them the process of convergence was confirmed, but in the second one the phenomenon of divergence was revealed.

The purpose of the study is to analyze the dynamics of regional disparities on NUTS 2 level in Poland for the period 1990–2017 within the framework of sigma convergence. We focus in particular on comparing the patterns of regional convergence before and after EU accession, introducing the methodology of parallel sigma convergence. The results show that the Mazowieckie voivodeship grew much above the average in both the pre-and post-accession periods, while eastern regions lagged behind. EU accession did not have a significant impact on the pattern of internal sigma convergence in Poland. Disparities between regions were increasing at the same pace before and after 2004, despite significant resources having been allocated to cohesion-focused undertakings after EU accession, especially in lagging eastern regions.

A sequence of optimal control problems for systems governed by linear hyperbolic equations with the nonhomogeneous Neumann boundary conditions is considered. The integral cost functionals and the differential operators in the equations depend on the parameter k. We deal with the limit behaviour, as k → ∞, of the sequence of optimal solutions using the notions of G- and Γ-convergences. The conditions under which this sequence converges to an optimal solution for the limit problem are given.

Since the trigonometric Fourier series of an integrable function does not necessarily converge to the function in the mean, several additional conditions have been devised to guarantee the convergence. For instance, sufficient conditions can be constructed by using the Fourier coefficients or the integral modulus of the corresponding function. In this paper we give a Hardy-Karamata type Tauberian condition on the Fourier coefficients and prove that it implies the convergence of the Fourier series in integral norm, almost everywhere, and if the function itself is in the real Hardy space, then also in the Hardy norm. We also compare it to the previously known conditions.

Extreme learning machine (ELM) is an efficient algorithm, but it requires more hidden nodes than the BP algorithms to reach the matched performance. Recently, an efficient learning algorithm, the upper-layer-solution-unaware algorithm (USUA), is proposed for the single-hidden layer feed-forward neural network. It needs less number of hidden nodes and testing time than ELM. In this paper, we mainly give the theoretical analysis for USUA. Theoretical results show that the error function monotonously decreases in the training procedure, the gradient of the error function with respect to weights tends to zero (the weak convergence), and the weight sequence goes to a fixed point (the strong convergence) when the iterations approach positive infinity. An illustrated simulation has been implemented on the MNIST database of handwritten digits which effectively verifies the theoretical results.

The European Union is currently facing a serious problem concerning the occurrence of significant health inequalities observed between particular member states as well as within these states. Substantial efforts are being made to achieve an economic and social cohesion and the reduction of health inequalities between the EU regions is an important element of this process. This work is devoted to the study of the variations of health status (measured by life expectancy) across the EU regions of NUTS II level. We apply existing tools developed in economic growth literature to study a mortality convergence. Using the idea of unconditional convergence model developed for economic growth, we can confirm a decrease or increase of regional health inequalities. The main research hypothesis is as follows: whether regions with lower initial life expectancies have experienced the largest increases in life expectancies. To verify the hypothesis of beta-convergence we use spatial econometric models which additionally allow to take the geographic dependence among the surveyed regions into consideration. Due to the heterogeneity of the surveyed spatial units we also verify the hypothesis of the club beta-convergence.

Opis:
The study constitutes an attempt to join the discussion about the importance of assessing convergence in the process of enlargement of European monetary union and it focuses on the comparative aspect of the degree of similarity of Polish economy in relation to the euro area and of countries that are already part of the single currency area. The aim of the article is to present the results of the indicator analysis of real convergence, which unlike the nominal one, gives a fuller picture of the desirability of state’s participation in the monetary union. These results, on the one hand, allow to draw certain conclusions regarding Poland and supporting the process of choosing the date of adoption of the euro, and on the other hand, help to determine if during the post-crisis period there occurred tendencies indicating an increase of the degree of similarity of economies already using the common currency. The research related, apart from Poland, to selected euro zone member states: France, Greece, Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland, Lithuania, Germany, Slovakia and Italy. For the purpose of the study, it was accepted that an appropriately broad selection of indicators, allowing to achieve the necessary objectivity degree of assessment of countries’ real convergence in relation to the entire euro area, would consist of: growth rate of real GDP and correlation coefficients relating to this measure, GDP per capita as a determinant of income, GDP per hour worked as an indicator of labour productivity, hourly labour costs, level of long-term unemployment, structure of gross value added, changes in the real exchange rate, long-term real interest rate and real money market rate (which, at the same level of the nominal short-term interest rate in the euro zone, is determined in each member state by the prices’ level growth rate). As the research period the years of 2004-2014 were adopted. The conducted indicator analysis of real convergence allowed to formulate a number of observations: the degree of similarity of the analysed economies to the whole monetary union is different in most cases, depending on which sphere is related to a measure; the scale of convergence of individual economies in relation to the euro zone also varies; in respect of the analysed countries, it is difficult to notice a trend towards deepening the scale of convergence in the post-crisis period; in the case of Poland, one should not rather talk about the similarity, but about far-reaching real divergences in relation to the euro zone, which result in postponing a reasonable moment to adopt the common currency.

Within thirty years, the relation between the Internet and the scientific activity has changed profoundly. The Internet has shifted from being an instrument of academic collaboration to being a tool used by social media, allowing for a maximum diffusion of irrationalism and alt-factualism. To understand this change, one needs re-examine the mechanisms of opinion convergence. This convergence stems primarily from the existence of the world we share, which exposes us to the same facts and determines the constant revision of each person’s beliefs. In this process of asymptotic opinion convergence, no communication between individuals is required. Of course, if the facts known by some are communicated to others, this convergence accelerates considerably, so much so that we must regard knowledge as a result of collective activity, and the exchange of information as one of its crucial sources. On the one hand, this epistemic cooperation seems natural and easy to implement. Given the properties of information, which is an asset we keep even if we share it, the sharing of information is not subject to the usual difficulties related to cooperation. Defection provides no profit, making the prisoner’s dilemma not applicable to epistemic cooperation. On the other hand, such cooperation is productive by nature: the collaboration of the one who knowns φ and the one who knows that φ implies ψ results in both agents having the knowledge of ψ, which neither of them had before the exchange. The earlier Internet allowed for an extreme intensity of this informational cooperation. At present, we are dealing with a different kind of situation. Several factors, including the growing porosity between scientists and the public, have strengthened the role of exchange. It is not an exchange of information, but an exchange of opinions. The biases inherent to human nature, and especially the confirmation bias, tends to reverse the relationship between facts and opinions. We search for the facts confirming the opinions we hold, doubt those which undermine them and create facts to corroborate what we believe. Hence, we go from cooperation to affiliation, dividing the Internet into homogenic groups of believers.

Głównym kierunkiem konwergencji społecznej i gospodarczej w ukraińsko-polskim regionie transgranicznym w ciągu ostatniej dekady była konwergencja produktu regionalnego brutto per capita.
The main factors contributing to the convergence in the financial and investment area of the Polish-Ukrainian cross-border region in the current conditions of European integration are the intensification of cross-border investment processes in the banking and insurance sectors, increasing the efficiency of the use of funds allocated to EU technical assistance programs, as well as the launch of joint cross-border activities of financial institutions. The main direction of social and economic convergence in the Ukrainian-Polish cross-border region over the last decade was the convergence of gross regional product per capita.
