Opis:
As of 2019, the total area of forest stands with the varying proportion of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) in composition on the Ukrainian Roztochchia was 11,251.3 ha and the area of pine stands involving European beech in composition was 6879.5 ha. Pine stands involving beech in composition are formed on the fresh, moist and boggy relatively pure and relatively rich soil condition. Pine forest stands (average share of pine exceeds 56%), which include beech in composition occupy more than 80% of the total area of interest. Mature and overmature forest stands dominate most of the landscape. More than 85% of stands are characterized by an average relative completeness. Undergrowth of deciduous tree species, which is mainly formed by European beech or hornbeam (Carpinus betulus L.) and rarely by common oak (Quercus robur L.) or sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus), is available under a canopy of middle-aged, ripening and mature stands. The study points to the need to rethink forest management approaches and eventually to use such methods of forest cuttings that ensure natural regeneration not only of a European beech and common oak, but primarily of a pine. The practice of creating pine plantations in such conditions favourable for its growth and development should be used only in those cases when it is impossible to achieve natural regeneration of pine.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term effect of selection cutting management on the stem quality of the trees remaining in the forest. For this purpose, three parcels managed for three decades by selection cutting were selected as managed stands (MP), and two protected parcels without tree felling as control stands (PP). First, the frequency of deformed stems in each parcel was determined for a circular 1000 m2 area of each plot by systematic sampling of 100 m × 100 m grid sections, and then a stem deformity index was estimated for each of the deformed stems. The results showed that the frequency of stem deformity in MP (6.5%) was significantly lower than in PP (20.7%) (p < 0.01). In addition, the frequency of all types of stem deformities in MP was significantly lower than in PP. Furthermore, selection cutting management reduced the indices of twisting, decay, conicity, forking, and ellipticity by 58.4%, 53.9%, 34.7%, 8.4% and 6.8%, respectively. The results for the correlation between frequency of stem deformity and tree diameter at breast height (dbh) showed that the curves followed a parabolic shape in both MP (r = 0.83) and PP (r = 0.80), where the frequency of deformed stems decreased with increasing dbh (up to 75 cm in MP, and up to 65 cm in PP), and then increased with larger dbh. Selection cutting management, regardless of tree species, improved the stem form. Decay accounted for a high proportion (24.1%) of the total deformity in MP, mainly due to logging damage. Overall, the results of this study show that selective management has been successful in improving the quality of tree boles in the studied mixed beech stands. Regular and long-term stand monitoring and statistical quality control (SQC) may be a good approach to aligning ecological and economic goals in forest management.

Opis:
The paper discusses the variability of the dynamics of volume growth, ingrowth and loss in the beech stands in the younger optimal phase of development. The material collected from the permanent circular sample plots established in the Bieszczady National Park (BNP) was classified into four groups relating to their location (elevation of up to and above 1000 m a.s.l and exposition: northern and southern). A significant decline in volume growth was found at higher altitudes and in northern expositions. There were no statistically significant differences in volume ingrowth and loss in relation to the analysed topographic factors.

Opis:
The study was based on the empirical material collected from 12 beech−pine stands located in the territory of the Miłomłyn (6 plots) and Stare Jabłonki (6 plots) forest districts. On the basis of the collected material, a height growth model was developed for the beech growing in the lower storey of pine stands. The developed functions can be used, inter alia, for the characterisation of top−height growth with stand age, development of a network of site indices, as well as in the studies on the height growth rate.

Opis:
Stand characteristics were analysed for the occurrence of regrowth with a species matching the dominant species of a stand. The analysis covered: stand age, stocking, degree of shelter (the sum of stocking plus the percentage of the shrub layer cover), dbh basal area, type and the dominant species of the vegetation cover. The obtained results were considered as preliminary criteria of the maturity age for regeneration.
