There is a good chance that “each critic becomes a Pygmalion” (as Leo Curran put it) when they bring the work of art to life in their narcissistic (and almost amorous) attention, unfolding its meaning so that they should be able to write their own interpretation. The starting point of the present text is the perfection of sculptural forms, and the author discusses “traditional” aesthetic concepts: the beautiful and the sublime along with the difference and interplay of the two qualities, bearing in mind their variations and relations. The framework is provided by the occurrence of these two in the discourses on the self and taste in the eighteenth-century while the focus is on subjective criticism concerning the beautiful versus the sublime in the artistic and sensual experience of statues. Within the given framework, the author is planning to force Edmund Burke, stiffened by the experience of the sublime, and Winckelmann, softened by the sight of the Greek statues, into a dialogue on individual taste.

The elements of symbiosis between a literary work and fable are clearly reflected in the structure of Herbert George Wells short story The Beautiful Suit that was published originally as A Moonlight Fable. The distinct allusion of the author about the title as well as the fact of two titles indicates similarity to folkloristic genre and gives posibility to perceive the story in two ways: literary work and fable. The typical semantics of folkloristic works is introduced by a number of constant formulas and motifs. They are conditioned by the function of moonlight topos that creates the opposition man – moon. The determining character of this antithesis implies the main division of the text and provides the paradigmatic sequence man – earth – mortal life versus moon – heaven – eternity that constitutes the fundamental element to model the basic relationships of the space and time structure. As well as in the sources of mythology and folklore the motif of the moon in the Wells’s short story introduces the aspect of duality of the depicted world, has an allegorical effect on the protagonist’s fate that touches the secret of existence and happiness.

Artistic activity at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries resulted not only in the development of literature and art, but also functional art and crafts, e.g. graphics and book decoration. Apart from artistic press, it was clearly visible in the phenomenon of the so-called beautiful book. The most distinguished artists of that period: Stanisław Wyspiański, Jan Bukowski, Antoni Procajłowicz – designed covers, vignettes and decorations of the best-known literary works. Lucjan Rydel, who found himself among those artists, was a friend of Wyspiański and cooperated with him, which meant that their first joint works heralded the discussed phenomenon at the Vistula River. This big event was the publication of Rydel’s translation of Iliada with the pictures and illustrations by Wyspiański, who also decorated Rydels’ volumes of poetry, using floral motifs, which were typical in his later work. Also other artists in their ornaments have tried to refer to the motifs which were dominant in Rydel’s works. Thanks to this practice, some editions of dramas (1902, designed by A. Procajłowicz) and Bajka o Kasi i królewiczu (1904, designed by S. Dębicki) should be regarded as the most renowned works of the ‘beautiful book’ trend, not only in Poland, but also in East-Central Europe. This paper focuses on the most representative ‘beautiful books’, based on Lucjan Rydel’s works from the period 1896–1911.

While St. Thomas Aquinas has not written any separate treaty on beauty, the theme of beauty regularly appears in his writing from its very beginning as that which corresponds with the Platonic doctrine presented by Dionysius the Areopagite in his De Divinis Nominibus. T he paper considers non-formal adult education. For this purpose, various classifications of adult education, forms of non-formal education and its advantages were presented. Activities of the Academy of Beautiful Time – initiative implemented by City Public Library in Czechowice-Dziedzice were characterized. The objectives of the Academy, ways of achieving the objectives and permissions of the listeners were presented. The paper also analyzes statistical data on the Academy of Beautiful Time, such as the number of students, the number of people participating in the courses, the number of hours of education and discusses the form of educational activity within the Academy. The article highlights the role of public libraries in the process of non-formal education and directions of development of the Academy of Beautiful Time in Czechowice-Dziedzice were formulated.

In dem Artikel wird dem Motiv der schönen Polin in zwei Gedichten des oberschlesischen Dichters Arthur Silbergleit nachgegangen. Die Gedichte werden einer eingehenden textnahen Analyse unterzogen, wobei der leitende Gedanke die Frage nach dem stereotypen Gehalt der von Silbergleit kreierten Frauenbilder ist. Die angestellten Überlegungen führen zu dem Fazit, dass der Dichter sich um ein jenseits bloß nationaler Kategorien liegendes Bild der Polinnen bemüht und sie in erster Linie als realitätsentrückte, in einem Zwischenreich beheimatete Wesen imaginiert.
The author analyses the motif of a beautiful Polish woman in two poems by Arthur Silbergleit. The analysis shows that the structuring of female personas goes beyond the stereotypical frames of perceiving Polish women in national categories, since they have been portrayed as beings settled between the reality and the dream, which makes it impossible to use them for the current political needs during the First World War.
Autorka analizuje motyw pięknej Polki w dwóch wierszach Arthura Silbergleita. Z analizy wynika, że konstrukcja postaci kobiecych wykracza poza stereotypowe ramy postrzegania Polek w kategoriach narodowych. Zostały one bowiem przedstawione jako istoty zadomowione w przestrzeni między rzeczywistością a snem, co uniemożliwia wykorzystanie ich do bieżących potrzeb politycznych w okresie I wojny światowej.

Miejsca przyjazne człowiekowi, stanowią miernik wartości przestrzeni miejskiej i atrakcyjności zurbanizowanego krajobrazu. Tworzenie ich stanowi kryterium dobrego kształtowania i użytkowania miast. Poprzez epoki kulturowe i stylowe, na przemian racjonalistyczne lub irracjonalistyczne - sztuka tworzenia miejsc przyjaznych i estetycznych, stanowi o kunszcie twórców i zadowoleniu użytkowników. Tym sposobem dobro i piękno stanowią duet najwyższych wartości – głoszonych przez myślicieli, realizowanych przez budowniczych, a ostatecznie przyswajanych przez ludzi.
Friendly places constitute a measure of values in urban space, and the attractiveness of a cityscape. Their creation determines the criteria of a good project and good use of the cities. Through cultural and stylistic eras, alternately rational or irrational, the art of a making places: friendly and aesthetic, is provided by the craftsmanship of designers, and the satisfaction of users. This way, both the: good and beautiful constitute a couple of the highest values – proclaimed by thinkers, and implemented by builders, and finally assimilated by people.

The focus of the article is a stove tile with the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Child, discovered during archaeological works in the interior of the house of canons number 6 on the cathedral island (Ostrów Tumski) in Poznań. The authors give a brief overview of the subject matter connected with antique stove tiles found during excavations and put forward the thesis that the images on them were inspired by sculptures of the turn of the 15th and 16th century, especially the so called Beautiful Madonna sculptures. The authors also refer to other findings of stove tiles with various images of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Child from the territory of Poland. They discuss a wide range of examples of everyday religiousness and indicate that stoves built with tiles with religious motifs are manifestations of such commonplace  devotion.

The aim of this paper is to present the meaning of the adjective beautiful and its derivatives in artistic prose of Cyprian Norwid and to establish how the author approaches the semantic field of the word beautiful. Cyprian Norwid through the use of the adjective beautiful and its derivatives, evaluates the elements of described world in different ways, which allows one to see the hierarchy of values. At the top of the hierarchy there are transcendent, moral and cognitive values, followed by aesthetic and vital values and then finally perceived and instrumental values. The poet also emphasizes the interdependence between these values. The most commonly used method of valuation of various objects and phenomena is to put them together in a way that comparison and evaluation is possible. Within the created hierarchy of values, there can be observed various displacements, which consist in raising the rank of some, and lowering other beings. These shifts usually result from the confrontation of the hierarchy of values of the narrator and the general public. Over the years Cyprian Norwid in all of his works develops a coherent concept of beauty, based on the belief that beauty has its source in God, is associated with truth, and is born of love, and thus becomes immortal.
Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie znaczeń leksemu piękny i jego derywatów w prozie artystycznej Cypriana Norwida oraz przyjrzenie się temu, w jaki sposób autor ustosunkowuje się do znaczeń pola wyrazowego piękna. Cyprian Norwid poprzez użycie przymiotnika piękny i jego derywatów w różny sposób wartościuje elementy opisywanego przez siebie świata. Pozwala to na odczytanie wyrażanej w ten sposób hierarchii wartości. Na jej szczycie znajdują się wartości transcendentne, zaraz po nich wartości moralne, poznawcze, następnie estetyczne, i wreszcie wartości witalne, odczuciowe i wartości instrumentalne. Poeta podkreśla również współzależność między tymi wartościami. Najczęściej stosowanym przez poetę sposobem wartościowania różnych przedmiotów i zjawisk jest zestawienie ich ze sobą w taki sposób, aby były możliwe ich porównanie i ocena. W obrębie powstałej hierarchii wartości zachodzą różne przemieszczenia, które polegają na podniesieniu rangi jednych, a obniżeniu innych bytów. Przesunięcia te wynikają najczęściej z konfrontacji hierarchii wartości narratora i ogółu społeczeństwa. Norwid na przestrzeni lat w całej swojej twórczości rozwija spójną koncepcję piękna, która opiera się na przekonaniu, że piękno ma swoje źródło w Bogu, związane jest z prawdą i rodzi się z miłości, a przez to staje się nieśmiertelne.

The paper analyses Bulgarian folk motifs What is Most Beautiful? and Who Made This Beauty?, appearing predominantly in Christmas folk songs. The author reveals the elements that define the aesthetic consciousness of the Bulgarian folk community, the mechanisms of building and transmitting the aesthetic experience as an integral part of the community’s worldview. The focus on the concept of the beautiful emhpasises the Christian nature of Christmas ritual poetry. Data concerning the motifs of the beautiful in the two Bulgarian songs is systematised in two appendices.
W artykule poddano analizie motywy “Co jest najpiękniejsze?” i “Kto stworzył to piękno?” zawarte w pieśniach ludowych, wykonywanych najczęściej podczas świąt Bożego Narodzenia. Autorka poszukuje elementów odzwierciadlających świadomość estetyczną członków bułgarskiej społeczności wiejskiej oraz omawia mechanizmy tworzenia i przekazywania doświadczenia estetycznego jako integralnej części światopoglądu przedstawicieli owej społeczności. Koncept “piękno” w analizowanych motywach wskazuje na chrześcijańskie pochodzenie bożonarodzeniowej poezji obrzędowej. Dwa aneksy dołączone do artykułu zawierają informacje o rozpowszechnieniu badanych motywów oraz o opublikowanych i archiwalnych wersjach dwóch pieśni.

The present analysis is focused on the issue of interactions of individuals with mathematics in films and strives to show why the question of the accuracy of mathematical formulas is not crucial to films and, therefore, what their main functions in the creation of the diegetic and the outer world are. In order to achieve the set aim, I ground my reflection in the idea suggested in Math Goes to the Movies, i.e. that mathematics is not presented in films only as an abstract theory, but it also carries a creative potential. Good Will Hunting (1997), A Beautiful Mind (2001) and Pi (1998) are the films in which mathematics is a substantial driving force, influencing both the gradual development and consolidation of characters. In this work, the films serve as the research material.
Niniejsza analiza koncentruje się na problematyce interakcji jednostek z matematyką w filmach i stara się pokazać, dlaczego kwestia ścisłości formuł matematycznych nie jest kluczowa dla filmów oraz jakie są ich główne funkcje w tworzeniu świata diegetycznego i zewnętrznego. Aby osiągnąć wyznaczony cel, autorka opiera swoje refleksje na tezie zaproponowanej w Math Goes to the Movies, czyli na tym, że matematyka nie jest prezentowana w filmach tylko jako abstrakcyjna teoria, ale ma też potencjał twórczy. Buntownik z wyboru (1997), Piękny umysł (2001) i Pi (1998) to filmy, jakimi autorka posługuje się jako materiałem badawczym a w których matematyka jest istotną siłą napędową, wpływającą zarówno na stopniowy rozwój, jak i na umocnienie postaci.

Przedmiotem niniejszego artykułu są wyniki badań polichromii i warstw dekoracyjnych wybranych rzeźb kamiennych w ramach projektu „Styl piękny w redakcji czeskiej w Prusach – rzeźba kamienna z lat 1380–1400”, przeprowadzonych w laboratorium Międzyuczelnianego Instytutu Konserwacji i Restauracji Dzieł Sztuki, Pogotowia Konserwatorskiego. Wśród materiału poddanego analizom znalazły się próbki zawierające pigmenty oraz spoiwa organiczne wchodzące w skład dekoracji barwnych, jak również materiał stanowiący substancję nawarstwień. Do identyfikacji wykorzystano różne techniki instrumentalne, takie jak spektroskopia w podczerwieni z transformacją Fouriera (FTIR), chromatografia gazowa połączona ze spektrometrią mas (GC/MS) oraz skaningowa mikroskopia elektronowa sprzężona ze spektrometrem rentgenowskim (SEM-EDS), a także obrazowanie 3D. Budowę warstwową oraz charakter poszczególnych warstw ustalono na podstawie obserwacji przekrojów poprzecznych próbek w świetle widzialnym (VIS) oraz we fluorescencji wzbudzonej ultrafioletem (UV). Wśród badanych próbek wykryto historycznie stosowane pigmenty w warstwach malarskich, takie jak azuryt, cynober, grynszpan, a także złoto w warstwach pozłoty. Analiza pigmentów, spoiw oraz budowy warstwowej poszczególnych próbek dostarczyła informacji na temat techniki i technologii, rzucając światło na aspekt związany z procesem dekorowania rzeźb kamiennych.
The subject of this article are the results of research on the polychrome and decorative layers of selected stone sculptures as part of the project The Bohemian Beautiful Style in Prussia – stone sculptures from the years 1380–1400 carried out in the laboratory of the InterUniversity Institute of Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art, Emergency Conservation. Among the materials subjected to analysis were samples containing pigments and organic binders included in the colour decorations, as well as the material constituting the substance of the layers. Various instrumental techniques were used for identification, such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gas chromatography – mass spectrometry (GC/ MS) and scanning electron microscopy coupled with Energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), as well as 3D imaging. The layered structure and the nature of individual layers were determined based on an observation of cross-sections of the samples in visible light (VIS) and ultraviolet (UV) fluorescence excitation. Historically used pigments in the paint layers, such as azurite, cinnabar, verdigris, as well as gold in gilding layers, were detected among the samples examined. The analysis of the pigments, binders and the structure of the layers of the individual samples provided information on the technique and technology used, thereby shedding light on the aspect related to the process of decorating stone sculptures.

W dzisiejszych czasach, w otoczeniu zabudowy, radykalnym przemianom ulega coraz częściej znajdująca się w najbliższym otoczeniu zieleń. Tendencje jej kształtowania wzorowane są na standardach ogrodów miejskich czy podmiejskich, zgodnych być może z panującą modą, ale nienawiązujących w żaden sposób do cech krajobrazu wiejskiego. W związku z tym, czy nadal możemy mówić o tradycyjnych ogrodach wiejskich? Czy może w dobie globalizacji granica między tym co wiejskie a tym co miejskie zaciera się coraz bardziej? Niniejszy artykuł, na przykładzie dwóch dolnośląskich miejscowości – laureatów konkursu „Piękna Wieś Dolnośląska 2012 i 2013”, ma na celu przedstawienie współczesnych tendencji kształtowania frontowych ogrodów wiejskich. W pracy, na podstawie badań terenowych, przeanalizowano sposoby zagospodarowania przedogródków na ponad 600 działkach siedliskowych, wykazano formy ich aranżacji oraz dominujące gatunki roślin.
