Gdańsk, connected to Poland but at the same time independent, was never an object of greater neighbors’ of Poland desire than in the 18th c. Although we have abundant printed and handwritten sources concerning this issue in French, the opinion of Stanisław August Poniatowski, king of Poland, is worth to consider, what is possible thanks to the publication of his Diaries originally written in French. Those might be considered primarily pro domo sua defense against future generations. Therefore, one can understand the ongoing throughout the 19th c. Russian efforts to not make ’Diaries‘ publicly known. The modern reader finds there no new facts about the history of the city of Gdańsk. Although one can realize that the king – unlike his countrymen before the partitions – properly evaluated the political and economic benefits, which could provide harbor of Gdańsk to Poland. The part of ’Diaries‘ referring to the events after first partition of Poland gives description of King’s efforts aimed to hold Gdańsk under the Polish rule, so preventing the takeover of Gdansk by the Prussians. ’Diaries‘ reveal the futility of these treatments because Polish hopes on the support of the Western powers, especially France and the Netherlands were an illusion, just as hopes on conflict between the partitioning powers.

Autor, powołując się na studium Teresy Zielińskiej o dokumentach publicznych w archiwach prywatnych, a także na przykłady królów polskich: Jana Kazimierza, Jana III Sobieskiego, Augusta II i Augusta III, rozszerza na monarchów tezę o częstym traktowaniu przez wysokiej rangi dostojników dokumentów publicznych jako własności prywatnej. Pozostała po królu Stanisławie Auguście Poniatowskim spuścizna archiwalna stanowi przypadek szczególny ze względu na likwidację w wyniku rozbiorów samodzielnego bytu państwowego Rzeczypospolitej. Poprzednio archiwa pokrólewskie składały się z dwóch części. Pierwszą z nich, mającą charakter oficjalny, przejmował następca na tronie, drugą zaś, prywatną, dziedziczyli królewscy spadkobiercy, jeżeli takowi istnieli. Po III rozbiorze i po abdykacji króla nie było następcy, który oficjalnie przejąłby królewskie archiwalia. Znaczna ich część przypadła jednemu z zaborców – Rosji, pozostałe uległy podziałowi na kilka części, z których największa przypadła wskazanemu przez króla w testamencie głównemu spadkobiercy, księciu Józefowi Poniatowskiemu. Rekonstrukcji tzw. Archiwum Stanisława Augusta wiele lat pracy poświęcił Piotr Bańkowski. Do wymienionych powyżej dziedziców królewskiej spuścizny archiwalnej należy jeszcze dodać Tadeusza Czackiego, po którym archiwalia znalazły się w Bibliotece Książąt Czartoryskich w Krakowie, drugiego bratanka króla, księcia Stanisława i Marcina Badeniego. Drugim celem prowadzonych przez Bańkowskiego prac było wydzielenie historycznych zespołów z odziedziczonych przez Potockich z Jabłonny po księciu Józefie Poniatowskim archiwaliów, które w okresie II wojny światowej znalazły się w AGAD. W ten sposób w zasobie oddziału I AGAD znalazły się: Archiwum Kameralne, Militaria z Jabłonny, Korespondencja Stanisława Augusta, Archiwum Ghigiottiego i Papiery Wickedégo, zaś w oddziale III królewskie Archiwum Górnicze i Archiwum Mennicze. Autor formułuje pewne zastrzeżenia do dokonanego podziału. W oddziale I powinny znaleźć się akta o charakterze oficjalnym, podczas gdy Archiwum Ghigiottiego, Papiery Wickedégo i nawet Korespondencja Stanisława Augusta mają w dużej mierze charakter prywatny. Dla odmiany Archiwum Górnicze i Archiwum Mennicze mają charakter urzędowy, chociaż znalazły się w oddziale III. Ukazuje to wyraźnie umowność granicy między tym, co publiczne i tym, co prywatne oraz zmieniającą się w ciągu ostatnich 200 lat treścią obu pojęć.
The author, citing a study by Teresa Zielińska on public documents in the private archives as well as analysing examples of Polish kings: John II Casimir Vasa (Jan II Kazimierz Waza), John III Sobieski (Jan III Sobieski), Augustus II the Strong (August II Mocny) and Augustus III of Poland (August III), extends on monarchs the thesis of treatment by high-level dignitaries public documents as a private property. The archival legacy of King Stanisław August Poniatowski was a special case because at that time Poland lost its independence as a result of the partitions. The Royal archive consisted previously of two parts. The first one of an official character was taken over by the heir to the throne, while the second one of private character was inherited by the royal heirs, if there were any. After The Third Partition and the abdication of the king there was no successor, who officially could have taken over the royal archive. Finally, a large part of the royal archive was taken over by one of the occupying powers – Russia, the rest was divided into several parts, the largest of which received Prince Józef Poniatowski who was designated in the king’s will to the main heir. Piotr Bańkowski devoted many years of work to the reconstruction of a so-called Archive of Stanisław August Poniatowski. To the above mentioned heirs of royal archive should be added Tadeusz Czacki, whose archival legacy was transferred to The Czartoryski Library in Kraków, Prince Stanisław, the second king's nephew, and Marcin Badeni. The second objective of the work carried out by Bańkowski was the separation of historical fonds out of records inherited by the Potocki family from Jabłonna after Prince Józef Poniatowski death. These records were transferred after World War II to the Central Archive of Historical Records (AGAD). In this way, the following fonds became the part of the archival holdings of Department I [Records of public authorities, offices and institutions until 1795] of AGAD: Archives of Royal Camera – Administration of King's Estates and Revenues [Archiwum Kameralne], Military Records from Jabłonna [Militaria z Jabłonny], Correspondence of Stanisław August [Korespondencja Stanisława Augusta], The Ghigiotti Archives [Archiwum Ghigiottiego] and Papers of Wickedé [Papiery Wickedégo]. In addition, Department III [Family archives and collections of private papers] of AGAD gained fonds: The Royal Mining Archives [królewskie Archiwum Górnicze] and The Royal Mint Archives [królewskie Archiwum Mennicze]. The author made a number of objections to the allocation made. The Department I should gather the files of an official character, while fonds: The Ghigiotti Archives, Papers of Wickedé, and even Correspondence of Stanisław August are of a largely private character. At the same time, fonds: The Royal Mining Archives and The Royal Mint Archives are of an official character but are preserved in the Department III. This clearly shows the conventionality of the border between what public and what private is and changing meaning of both terms over the past 200 years.

Sejmiki ziemskie były głównym elementem samorządu szlacheckiego, a jednocześnie środkiem wpływów szlachty na politykę państwową. W obecnym stuleciu w historiografii nastąpiło ożywienie w kwestii zarówno wydawania akt sejmikowych, jak i monografii poszczególnych zgromadzeń. Nadal jednak literatura daleka jest od opracowania tematu w pełni, tym cenniejsza jest zatem praca Grzegorza Glabisza Sejmiki Wielkopolski w latach 1764–1793. Większa część tej pracy poświęcona jest skrupulatnemu odtworzeniu struktury i funkcjonowania sejmików. Nieco skromniejsza zaś część druga zajmuje się ich dziejami politycznymi w omawianym okresie.
The sejmiks, as their local assemblies, were the central element of noble self-government in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and, simultaneously, institutions that enabled nobles to influence the policy of the royal government. In the present century, historiography has seen a revival of both the editions of sejmik records and publications of monographs devoted to individual assemblies. However, there is still a need for synthetic studies, which makes Grzegorz Glabisz’s book Sejmiki Wielkopolski w latach 1764–1793 [Sejmiks of Wielkopolska 1764–1793] all the more valuable. Apart from a brief overview of the political history of the period, the bulk of the book provides a meticulous reconstruction of the structure and functioning of sejmiks across the province of Wielkopolska.

The article focuses on the sessions of dietines (sejmiki, assemblies of the local nobility) convened in 1766. The author presents the preparations for the campaign of both the court and the opposition, and then – on the basis of instructions and letters describing the course of local gatherings – answers the question of which side was victorious at the dietines.
Przedmiotem badań w niniejszym artykule są sejmiki 1766 r. Autor opisuje przygotowania do kampanii zarówno dworu, jak i opozycji, a następnie na podstawie instrukcji oraz korespondencji relacjonującej przebieg lokalnych zgromadzeń odpowiada na pytanie, czyim sukcesem się okazały sejmiki.

W okresie ostatniego bezkrólewia, od zgonu króla Augusta III Sasa do wysunięcia przez dwory rosyjski i pruski kandydatury Stanisława Poniatowskiego na króla, „Gazeta Leydeyska” bardzo obszernie przekazywała informacje o rozwoju sytuacji w Rzeczypospolitej. Były one wiarygodne, a redaktorzy gazety bezbłędnie rozłożyli akcenty, punktując kwestie najbardziej istotne. Niezwykle też umiejętnie wypunktowali, nie opatrując z oczywistych względów szerszym komentarzem, związki Stanisława Poniatowskiego i „Familii” Czartoryskich z Rosją i bezpośrednio z carycą Katarzyną II. Ukazali też rolę, jaką w okresie bezkrólewia w Rzeczypospolitej odegrała armia rosyjska. Redaktorom gazety, na pewno korzystającym z różnych źródeł informacji, udało się niezwykle sprawnie przesegregować napływające do nich informacje i uniknąć poważniejszych wpadek, jakie mogło spowodować zamieszczenie błędnych danych. Gazeta przeznaczona była dla wyrobionego intelektualnie czytelnika, który orientował się w informacjach z reguły unikających kontrowersyjnych komentarzy.
During the last interregnum, from the death of King August III to the nomination of the Russian and Prussian candidate for king Stanisław Poniatowski, the "Gazeta Leydeyska" gave very extensive information about the development of the situation in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The reports were credible and the editors of the newspaper emphasized the most important issues. They also skillfully point out, without obviously providing a wider commentary, the relationships between Stanisław Poniatowski and the Czartoryski "Family" with Russia and directly with Tsarina Catherine II. They also showed the role of the Russian army in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth during the interregnum. The editors of the newspaper, certainly benefiting from various sources of information, managed to efficiently sort out the incoming information to them and to avoid serious mishaps that could result in the inclusion of incorrect data. The newspaper was intended for an intellectually-minded reader who was aware of information but who usually avoided controversial commentary.

Niniejszy tekst przybliża problematykę reform prawa karnego w Rzeczypospolitej przedrozbiorowej, jakie podjęto za panowania ostatniego Jej króla – Stanisława Augusta Poniatowskiego. Autor spośród różnych instytucji prawnokarnych omawia tylko zmiany dotyczące kary śmierci. W większości reformy te pozostały jedynie w sferze projektów, a więc artykuł dotyczy w większym stopniu postulatów de lege ferenda, aniżeli regulacji faktycznie wprowadzonych w życie. W tym zakresie prawem obowiązującym stały się Prawa Kardynalne z 1768 r. (załącznik do traktatu wieczystego pomiędzy Rzecząpospolitą a Imperium Rosyjskim), które w obiegowej opinii kojarzą się bardziej z materią konstytucyjną, szczególnie z narzuceniem jej niezmienności w interesie Katarzyny II, poruszają jednak również zagadnienia związane z innymi dziedzinami prawa, w tym kary śmierci. Następnie drogą ustawową zniesiono karę śmierci za czary (1776). Kolejną reformę, którą udało się przeprowadzić zawarto w ustawie o sądach sejmowych (1791). Na jej mocy określono nowy katalog karanych śmiercią przestępstw politycznych. Cała reszta omawianych zagadnień pozostała w sferze koncepcji i planów. Największe zmiany postulowali projektodawcy kodeksów: (1) Andrzej Zamoyski w swoim Zbiorze praw sądowych wiele miejsca poświęcił przestępstwom i przysługującym za nie karom, wśród których często szafował śmiercią oraz (2) Józef Szymanowski i Józef Weyssenhoff – przewodniczący komisji powołanych do spisania codicis civili et criminali zapowiedzianych w art. VIII Konstytucji 3 Maja, których projekty składały się na dzieło zwane Kodeksem Stanisława Augusta.
This text introduces the issues of penal law reforms in the pre-partition Poland, which were tackled during the reign of the last king – Stanisław August Poniatowski. The author from among various criminal law institutions discusses only changes concerning the death penalty. For the most part, these reforms remained only in the sphere of projects, so the present work touches upon the demands of de lege ferenda to a greater extent, rather than the regulations actually implemented. In this regard, the Cardinal Laws of 1768 (an attachment to the eternal treaty between the Republic of Poland and the Russian Empire), which in the common opinion are associated more with constitutional matters, especially with the imposition of its immutability in the interests of Catherine II, touch upon other issues related to other areas of law, including the death penalty. Next, the death penalty for witchcraft was statutorily abolished (1776). Another reform that was successfully carried out was included in the Act on Sejm Courts (1791). It established a new catalogue of political crimes subject to death penalty. The rest of the issues discussed remained in the sphere of concepts and plans. The most important changes were postulated by the codes drafter: (1) Andrzej Zamoyski in his Collection of Court Laws devoted a great amount of space to crime and penalties, where he often mentioned death, and (2) Józef Szymanowski and Józef Weyssenhoff – chairmen of committees appointed to write codicis civili et criminali announced in Art. VIII of the Constitution of May 3, whose projects constituted a work called the Code of Stanisław August.

Artykuł omawia wykorzystanie legendy Henryka IV w kształtowaniu wizerunku Stanisława Augusta. W pierwszej części artykułu autor, poprzez prześledzenie XVIII-wiecznych utworów scenicznych we Francji, pokazuje funkcjonowanie pamięci o „dobrym królu Henryku” w epoce Oświecenia. Legenda przedstawiała go jako skutecznego i tolerancyjnego władcę, który zaprowadził pokój w kraju targanym wojnami religijnymi i oparł swoje rządy na zaufaniu i dobrobycie społeczeństwa. Motyw Henryka IV budził stałe zainteresowanie francuskich literatów, szczególnie od momentu opublikowania w latach 20. XVIII w. poematu Woltera Henriada. W drugiej części artykułu przedstawione zostały próby Stanisława Augusta kreowania się na „polskiego Henryka IV” (tym tytułem już w momencie elekcji okrzyknęła go Maria Teresa Geoffrin). Prześledzone zostały wizerunki monarchy, w których możemy doszukiwać się odniesień do postaci Henryka IV: od stroju, w którym Stanisława August pokazał się społeczeństwu Warszawy w dniu koronacji (przedstawionym na oficjalnym wizerunku króla – Portrecie w stroju koronacyjnym Marcella Bacciarellego) do portretu pędzla Élisabeth Vigée-Lebrun z czasów po abdykacji i III rozbiorze Rzeczypospolitej. W artykule zebrano także dzieła sztuki i książki z królewskiej kolekcji przedstawiające pierwszego Burbona. Porównania Stanisława Augusta z Henrykiem pojawiające się w poezji, anegdotach i mowach sejmowych tego okresu pokazują, że zestawienie to funkcjonowało w świadomości społecznej, jednak ze względu na realia polityczne upadającego państwa polsko-litewskiego nie mogło być mocno eksploatowane bez narażenia się na śmieszność.
The article discusses the use of Henry IV’s legend in the shaping of the image of King Stanisław August. In the first part of the article, the author explores the way the memory of “Good King Henry” functioned and manifested itself in the French plays of the 18th century. The Enlightenment legend in France portrayed him as an effective and tolerant ruler who bought peace to the country afflicted with religious wars and founded his rule on trust and working towards the wealth of the nation. The motif of Henry IV constantly attracted the interest of French writers, especially since the publication La Henriade, an epic poem by Voltaire, in the 1720s. The second part of the article explores the attempts to style Stanisław August as the “Polish King Henry IV,” the name first accorded to him by Marie Thérèse Geoffrin upon his election. The author has taken into account any elements or features of Stanisław August’s public image that could carry references to Henry IV, such as the robes that Stanisław August for public celebrations in Warsaw on the day of his coronation (represented in the official portrait of the king in the coronation robes painted by Marcello Bacciarelli), or the portrait by Élisabeth Vigée-Lebrun painted after his abdication and the third partitioning of Poland. Additionally, the article enumerates the works of art and books from the royal collection that portray the first French king of the House of Bourbon. Parallels drawn between Stanisław August and Henry IV that appear in the poetry, anecdotes, and parliamentary speeches of the period indicate that the comparison took root in the social consciousness in Poland, but due to the political circumstances and the collapsing Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, it could not be fully exploited, because it provoked derision.

The aim of the article is to present the biography of Stanislaw August Morawski (1922–2019) – an outstanding figure of the Italian Polonia, who avoided media publicity. On the basis of a few available book sources and biographies published after his death in the Polish and Polonia press, introduced his life in Poland and in Italy and a huge number of his activities for Poland, Poles and the Polish community in Italy. S. Morawski was, among others, for many years the president of the Rome Foundation J.Z. Umiastowska, the Lanckoroński Foundation, co-founder of the Union of Poles in Italy and a member of its board, author of many publications on the history of Poles in the Apennine Peninsula.
Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie biografii Stanisława Augusta Morawskiego (1922–2019) – wybitnej postaci Polonii włoskiej, a jednocześnie osoby, która unikała rozgłosu medialnego. Na podstawie niewielu dostępnych źródeł książkowych i opublikowanych już po Jego śmierci artykułów wspomnieniowych w prasie polonijnej i polskiej przedstawiono zarówno polskie, jak i włoskie, koleje Jego życia oraz ogrom działań na rzecz Polski, Polaków i Polonii we Włoszech. S. Morawski był, między innymi, wieloletnim prezesem Fundacji Rzymskiej im. J.Z. Umiastowskiej, Fundacji Lanckorońskich, współtwórcą Związku Polaków we Włoszech i członkiem jej zarządu, autorem wielu publikacji dotyczących historii Polaków na Półwyspie Apenińskim.

Opis:
Ignacy Krasicki expressed his opinion about King Stanisław August Poniatowski in the coronation homily on 25 November 1764, and then in the satire entitled On the King written in 1779. In the homily he said that it was a man of `a splendid mind and righteous heart'; he also tried to convince the audience that the King should be respected. In the satire he defended the King against the charges of the opposition who said that he was not a king's son, that he was too young, too good and that he loved learned people. The charges resulted from envy, spite and foolishness, as during his reign Stanisław August effected far-reaching reforms in Poland. Among others, he established the Commission for National Education – the first ministry of education in the world, that played an important role after the political collapse of the state.

Artykuł omawia inaugurację Teatru Królewskiego w Starej Oranżerii w dniu 6 września 1788, która była imponującym widowiskiem i miała przemyślaną konstrukcję. Autorka analizuje przebieg otwarcia prywatnej sceny stanisławowskiej, która zintensyfikowała życie kulturalne w Łazienkach Królewskich. Analizie zostają poddane wizerunki równoległe Stanisława Augusta w dekoracji Teatru Królewskiego, jak również portrety ewokowane 
w wystawionych wówczas komediach: La Partie de chasse de Henri Quatre Charlesa Collé 
i George Dandin Moliera oraz balecie Rybaki w choreografii D. Kurtza. Autorka wskazuje, w jaki sposób malowidła na teatralnym plafonie, ukazujące króla jako Apollina w otoczeniu czterech dramatopisarzy (Sofokles, Szekspir, Racine, Molier), projekt kurtyny przedstawiający „Dziewięć muz na Parnasie” oraz wystawione dramaty 
i balet tworzyły spójną opowieść o Stanisławie Auguście. Analiza ta pokazuje, że przekaz estetyczny inauguracji był tożsamy z przekazem politycznym, a intercielesność monarchy 
w tym widowisku pomagała królowi w budowaniu własnej tożsamości.
The article discusses the inauguration of the Royal Theatre in the Old Orangery that took place on 6 September 1788 and was an impressive spectacle with a well thought out composition. The author analyses closely the opening of the king’s private theatre stage, which greatly added to the cultural life at the Royal Łazienki. The analysis includes parallel representations of Stanisław August that were part of the theatre hall’s decoration as well as the portrayals discernable in the comedies performed on that occasion: La Partie de chasse d’Henri Quatre by Charles Collé and George Dandin by Molière, and the performance of Rybaki (‘Fishermen’), a ballet choreographed by Daniel Kurtz. The author argues that the painted plafond featuring the king as Apollo surrounded by four playwrights (Sophocles, Shakespeare, Racine, and Molière), the curtain decoration with “The Nine Muses on the Parnassus” and the comedies and ballet performed at the opening told a coherent story about Stanisław August. The analysis shows that the aesthetic message conveyed at the inauguration was identical with the political one, and the interplay of the king’s representations helped the monarch build his identity.

Za panowania Stanisława Augusta Poniatowskiego bardzo wielu polskich luminarzy sztuki i kultury, a także licznych polityków i mężów stanu, należało do masonerii. Ruch ten w Europie XVIII wieku zyskiwał coraz więcej zwolenników, także wśród głów koronowanych. Do wolnomularstwa należał podobno także sam król Stanisław August. Historycy sztuki, próbując odczytywać ukryte treści dzieł sztuki powstających na dworze tego monarchy, dopatrują się w nich wątków masońskich. W niniejszym artykule została przedstawiona próba odrzucenia tych interpretacji. Głównym powodem jest dla autorki brak dowodów w postaci źródeł, które mogłyby potwierdzić słuszność tych twierdzeń.
During the reign of Stanislaus Augustus many Polish luminaries of art and culture, and numerous politicians and statesmen belonged to the freemasonry order. In 18th century Europe this organisation was gaining more and more members, including individuals from royalty. It has been presumed that King Stanislaus Augustus was also a member. Art historians have tried to uncover hidden messages in the artwork commissioned by the king in the search for masonic motives. This article is an attempt to refute such interpretations. The author finds no proof in sources researched that would confirm the validity of such interpretations.

Opis:
The period of interregnum after the death of Augustus III of Saxony and the first months of the reign of Stanislaw August Poniatowski was an unusually interesting period in Polish history. It shows who the Czartoryski princes were and how they prepared to govern the country. They did not hesitate to take power and bring the Russian army into the coun-try. Stanislaw Poniatowski, who took the throne as a result of the support of Catherine II and was completely dependent on Russian protectors, could not push his agenda or influ-ence the Russian ambassador even in ceremonial matters not to mention on more serious matters. Being very good players on the domestic political scene, the leader of the family had little international political or diplomatic experience, also taking into account the disparity of power between the „Familia” and the Empress of All of Russia, who was one of the most powerful monarchs in Europe, boded badly for the future of the country and exhibited Czartoryski and king in the worst light. Both the interregnum period and the first months of the reign of Stanislaw August clearly showed the dependence of both the king and the „Familia” on their Russian patroness as well as their inferior skills to conduct independent policy.
Okres bezkrólewia po śmierci Augusta III Sasa i pierwsze miesiące panowania Stani-sława Augusta Poniatowskiego to okres niezwykle interesujący w dziejach Polski. Ukazuje on kim byli i jakie przygotowanie do rządzenia krajem mieli książęta Czartoryscy, którzy nie zawahali się dla przejęcia władzy sprowadzić do kraju armii rosyjskiej i Stanisław Po-niatowski który objął tron dzięki poparciu Katarzyny II, a całkowicie zależny od swojej rosyjskiej protektorki wisząc u niej na przysłowiowym garnuszku, nie potrafił przeforsować swojego zdania u rosyjskiego ambasadora nawet w kwestiach ceremonialnych, o poważniejszych sprawach nie wspominając. Będący bardzo dobrymi graczami na wewnątrzkrajowym rynku politycznym, przy-wódcy „Familii” mieli niewielkie doświadczenie i umiejętności w polityce międzynarodo-wej i dyplomacji, co biorąc jeszcze pod uwagę dysproporcję sił pomiędzy obozem „Fami-lii”, a imperatorową Wszechrosji, jedną z najpotężniejszych monarchiń w Europie, fatalnie wróżyło przyszłości kraju i wystawiało Czartoryskim i królowi jak najgorszą opinię. Za-równo okres bezkrólewia, jak i pierwsze miesiące panowania Stanisława Augusta dobitnie ukazały zależność zarówno króla, jak i „Familii” od ich rosyjskiej protektorki, jak i ich niewielkie umiejętności do prowadzenia samodzielnej polityki.

The qualification – poem ‘To the king’ is a panegyric - it is conditioned not so much by the text of Krasicki’s pen, but by views of the last king of the Commonwealth and on the positions of researchers of the past. For the so-called panegyric lever can be used as one of the tools of poetic analysis. ‘To the king’, at least indirectly, they are indicative through their initial words: “the higher, the more visible”. What then is the relationship between Krasicki’s poem and the tradition depicted by the Old Polish royal panegyric with its nine mechanisms of the so-called “ panegyric leverage? Only one of them is fully and simultaneously innovatively taken – this is the “factual” force of the interpretation of facts. The poem ‘The king’ can be read as such a selected set of prerequisites, of which arguments can be selected for the compliant or reprehensible attitudes of supporters and opponents of Stanislas Augustus. One of the major challenges faced by king Stanisław August in 1764-1793 was establishing his own political backing. According to some historians, during his tumultuous reign he managed to create and implement a new, informal model of public career. The article is based on conclusions drawn from analysed source material and confirms the scheme using the example of General Augustyn Gorzeński’s political career. He was Poznań Chamberlain and one of the most trusted royal advisors at the decline of the Polish Republic.
