    The 11th September 2003 was quite an ordinary working day in the Royal Library – at least for the first few hours in the morning. At approximately 11.00 a.m., however, I was interrupted by the telephone. A polite lady introduced herself as the rare book specialist from Christie’s in London. From a consignor she had received the following work for sale: Propalladia de Bartholome de Torres Naharro.Dirigida... Napoles: por Ioan Pasqueto de Sallo, Naples 1517. Her investigation of a critical edition of Torres Naharro’s works from 1943 had established that only two copies of this particular work were known to exist. One incomplete copy in the National Library of Spain in Madrid, and one complete copy in The Royal Library in Copenhagen. This puzzled the keeper of books at the auction company, and she was keen to know whether she had a historic sensation in her hands or simply a stolen book.

    In the years 1581 – 1603, the Elizabethan government imposed strict rules of printing censorship by controlling the printing industry and circulation of books written by English Recusants, hence not in consonance with the political views of the government in power. Printing and circulation of these books was made possible in other countries and still available in libraries in Kraków, thanks to eighteenth and nineteenth century Polish bibliophiles. This article attempts at providing a survey of the rare books available in Kraków by describing the provenance of selected sixteenth century books. Thanks to the presence of these books in Kraków’s libraries we are able therefore to reconstruct and complete this missing chapter in the history of sixteenth century Elizabethan book publication and circulation.
    W latach 1581 – 1603, rząd Królowej Elżbiety I wprowadził surową cenzurę nad działalnością drukarską, kontrolując nie tylko całe przedsiębiorstwo drukarskie, ale również obieg druków, ograniczając w ten sposób druki niezgodne z panującą polityką rządzącego. Natomiast druk i obieg książek zakazanych w Anglii był możliwy w innych państwach, jak i w dawnej Rzeczpospolitej Polskiej, a wymownym dowodem na to jest fakt, że książki do dziś są dostępne w bibliotekach krakowskich, dzięki osiemnastowiecznym i dziewiętnastowiecznym bibliofilom. Artykuł ten próbuje opisać starodruki angielskich rekuzantów znajdujących się w różnych krakowskich bibliotekach poprzez opisywanie proweniencji wybranych starodruków. Dzięki istnieniu tych książek, można dzisiaj zrekonstruować oraz uzupełnić ten brakujący rozdział w historii drukarstwa i obiegu książek w szesnastowiecznej Anglii.

    Edmund Campion (1540-1581) was a Jesuit priest and fellow of St. John’s College in Oxford, who was, first and foremost, most famed in his time for his extraordinary rhetorical skills. Today, a glimpse of the exceptional oratorical skills of the man can be provided by books and very rare copies of which can be found in Poland’s libraries. This attests to the exceptional Polish interest in Campion’s works throughout the centuries. This article presents the partial results of original research findings in an area often neglected by English and Polish literary historians. It aims to provide a descriptive survey of Campion’s rare books which can be found in selected libraries in Poland. By employing methodology drawn from the disciplines of History of the Book and Philology, it is hoped that the reader can be thus more acquainted with the existence of the rare books found in Polish libraries and thus equip him with a better and deeper appreciation of the unique cultural and historical value of the rare books in Polish library holdings. The article begins by briefly describing the history of the provenance of some of the Campion rare books which we have today thanks to the bibliophile and collection initiatives of some of Poland’s eminent statesmen such as Tadeusz Czacki and Adam Kazimierz Czartoryski. This is then followed by a brief history of Campion and his times. Particular emphasis shall be made on the history of the printing of “Rationes Decem,” as it was printed secretly. Finally, a brief description of the relveant rare books, that is translations and later editions of the “Rationes” shall be briefly described. The wide interest, as best illustrated by Skarga’s mentioning of the text or the Pisecius’ reply, in the “Rationes” shall also be discussed as it testifies to the wide interest that the person of Campion and his text enjoyed in the times of the Polish Commonwealth.

    This article describes a collection of rare Polonica, numbering over five hundred books, pamphlets, manuscripts, and prints and engravings, donated to the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library in 2001 by Karol Godlewski and his family. The donor’s uncle, Count Emeryk Hutten Czapski (1897–1979), assembled the extraordinary collection. The material includes works written, edited, or translated by Polish authors. The publication dates range from 1505 to the mid-1970s, with two hundred titles predating 1801. The subject matter ranges from texts written by Terence and Plutarch to biographies of Polish kings, details of famous battles, and poetry. There are also etchings of Polish personages, palaces, landscapes, or battle scenes, many of artistic importance

    Historyk, kartograf, teoretyk księgoznawstwa Joachim Lelewel (1786-1861) swoją bibliotekę prywatną zapisał w testamencie Uniwersytetowi Wileńskiemu. Dział Druków Rzadkich Biblioteki UW przechowuje kolekcję książek i broszur uczonego, liczącą 3684 pozycje (5400 tomów). Jest ona ciekawa ze względu na tematykę oraz zachowane proweniencje. W artykule zostały przedstawione dzieje powstania zbioru i okoliczności włączenia go do Biblioteki Uniwersytetu Wileńskiego, a także krótka charakterystyka tematyczna. Najwięcej uwagi poświęcono jednak różnym wpisom, pieczęciom i ekslibrisom. Sporą część kolekcji stanowią książki z dziedziny geografii, kosmografii, dziejów antycznych i czasów najnowszych oraz relacje z podróży do różnych krajów. Ważne miejsce zajmują też prace samego historyka. Zachowane na książkach notatki J. Lelewela ukazują go jako badacza o rozległych zainteresowaniach oraz świetnego bibliografa. Natomiast dedykacje potwierdzają, że był on naprawdę znanym i cenionym naukowcem. Proweniencje wielu osób i instytucji z różnych okresów wskazują na to, że J. Lelewelowi nie zależało na nabywaniu wyjątkowych, cennych książek, a zwracał on uwagę przede wszystkim na treść publikacji.
    Historian, cartographer, bibliographer, book scientist Joachim Lelewel (1786-1861) devised and bequeathed his private library to the Vilnius University. This collection, preserved in the Rare Book Department of the VU Library, consists of 3684 titles (5400 volumes). Though Lelewel was not a bibliophile, his book collection is interesting and valuable thematically and for the extant provenances in the books. The article reveals the history of its formation and eventual arrival at the Vilnius University, shortly discusses book topics and brings into focus all the different inscriptions, stamps and exlibrises. The majority of books deal with geography, cosmography, Antique, history of modern times, descriptions of travels in different countries. Works of Lelewel himself form a significant part of this collection as well. Lelewel’s own notes in the books themselves reveal that he was not only a researcher interested in a lot of areas of science, but also a great bibliographer. Moreover, the dedications to J. Lelewel paint him as a famous or appreciated scientist who intensively cooperated with the other researchers. The varied persons’ and institutions’ provenances from different times not only provide significant information about the former readers, their reading habits and interests, but also confirm that for Lelewel the content of the books – not the goal to aquire special or exclusive publications – was the most important thing.
