Opis:
The article describes cultural life in Kielce at the threshold of independence. The local theatre played a prominent role at that time, since it was the only professional scene on which the Regency Council’s manifest was read. After this event the institution had its name changed into the Polish Theatre. The directors in those days were struggling with financial and logistical problems, lack of permanent crew, and even the outbreak of typhus. The history of the theater is described in the context of provincial, poor and clerical town, in which the intelligentsia accounted for a small percentage of the population. The audience wanted some entertainment both from the theatre and the expanding world of the cinema. Therefore, the creators were trying to meet those expectations through productions based on comedy and operetta. The local amateur theatre was the only group involved in politics, staging several patriotic plays. The conclusions of the article are based on the materials published in ”Gazeta Kielecka”, a local newspaper of that time, and collections available in the branch of National Archive in Kielce (unfortunately, no documents have been preserved in Żeromski Theater), as well as the research done by regional historians. Year 1918 turned out to be just a glimpse in the long process of changing the mentality of local community. It was just the first step to rebuild its national identity.

Opis:
The article entitled Monumenta polskiej scenografii. Ustawienia-odsłonięcia-obchody is a discussion of the important publication Zmiana ustawienia. Historia polskiej scenografii teatralnej i społecznej XX i XXI wieku (A change of setting. History of the Polish theatre and social scenography in the 19th and 20th centuries) edited by D. Buchwald and D. Kosiński. In the three parts, entitled Settings, Unveilings and Celebrations, the author refers to the methodological assumptions of the project, analyses the contribution of each author to the ambitious research project and reflects on the inclusion of socio-political issues in the study of theatre aesthetics. The author acknowledges the groundbreaking nature of this achievement, crowned with an important scenography exhibition at the Zachęta Gallery in Warsaw authored by Robert Rumas, and enters into polemics with the individual concepts of set design analysis and reflects on the value of the work as a synthesis covering ‘the entirety of Polish scenography’ from the late 19th century to the present day.

Opis:
An overview of play scripts with a Ukrainian component from the repertoire of the Polish Theatre in Lviv in the first half of the 19th century was conducted for the first time in Ukrainian theatre studies. The content of various works was analysed and the presence of Ukrainian people as characters in musical and dramatic plays was revealed. The presence of Ukrainian discourse in Polish theatre of that period is proved and a short outline of its special features and the way it represented Ukrainian people on a foreign theatre stage is presented. The article pays special attention to the presence of Ukrainian women and their image as «gender symmetry» in Ukrainian discourse in the above mentioned plays. The continuous history of performances that include Ukrainian characters on Lviv’s Polish stage in the given period is emphasized.

The article is an attempt to examine the archive of letters written to the Teatr Ziemi Mazowieckiej and to reconstruct the theatre’s practices aimed at giving voice to its audience. The preserved letters allow us to ask questions about the ways of building relations with the audience by the theatre, which inspired their creation and also used them in its programmes. The content of the letters and the strategies used by their authors allow us to pose a hypothesis that the theatre’s management constructed a discourse different from that of the reviewers, who disdained the work of the theatre. The archive also allows us to postulate a counter-criticism which, unlike the hierarchically establishing criticism, uses the rhetoric of enthusiasm and care, locating a political potential in kindness and seeing in it an ability to make things happen.

Opis:
The paper concerns some elements of the construction of worlds represented on stage in recent Polish theatre. This may be seen as a comment on the state of democratic Poland after 1989 and, more generally, as an analysis of the peculiarities of the contemporary world. However, a deeper analysis shows recent theatre staging as structurally similar to the construction of dystopias. The worlds represented on stage are characterized by the presence of a nonlinear construction of time, by the absence of ending, of a horizon and of death, by the presence of ruins (intended literally, as an aesthetic paradigm, and metaphorically) and by the construction of dystopian characters. The analysis focuses on one of the most important performances for the Polish political theatre of the last two decades, H. (2004), a version of Hamlet directed by Jan Klata, performed in the historic and derelict Gdańsk Shipyard, a symbolic stage set which becomes at the same time the place of fulfilment of dystopia and of the emergence of the desire for utopia.

Opis:
This article presents the history of the acquaintance between Irena Solska and Stanisław Eliasz Radzikowski seen through the lens of their correspondence (held in the collections of the National Museum in Kraków, the Czartoryski Library). These documents not only record a relationship, but – through the personal items, intimate keepsakes, and single-sentence letters enclosed in the envelopes – they are an example of an archive that transcends traditional frameworks and classifications. The author suggests using the term “bioarchive” to describe the existential, material, and performative dimension of the biographical documentation.

Opis:
The main goal of the article is to offer a description of cryptotexts of theatre staging handbooks and dramatic works created in Poland during the socialist realism period. A cryptotext is a secret text which is the result of a purposeful act of subterfuge. In the article, I present selected cryptotexts – reviews produced in the Ministry of Culture and Art (MKiS) and censorship reviews of the dramatic works submitted for evaluation to the Voivodship Control Bureau for Press, Main Office of Control of Press, Publications and Shows (WUKPPiW). The archives contain evaluation of works which have been published in subsequent years as well as those which remained only in their draft form. Analysis of the evaluations of ministry officials reveal the mechanisms for allowing and withholding submitted dramatic works and a theatre staging handbook which shows the practices of publishing theatrical works. An analysis of different evaluations of the same text allows for a hypothesis that the main aim of cryptotexts was the evaluation of ideological correctness of submitted works. Despite this main function it is possible to point out specific passages in the statements by the WUKPPiW officials which are similar to statements of Ministry officials. In both cases the evaluation pertains to the content and the planned fulfilment of the work and plays mainly a didactic function.

The text develops further the author’s previous article Theatre of Immediate Intervention in Theoretical Recognition. In presenting the stage performances which follow the previously defined formula, she analyses the means of theatrical expression. Furthermore, she demonstrates how theatre invents the ways to comment on such contemporary social problems as homelessness, the situation of Polish soldiers returning from Iraq, working conditions in large production plants, or the situation of tenants evicted by the new housing estate owners. These stage productions often become theatrical events, engaging public opinion and launching a real intervention into the life of the community. Additionally, the author attempts to situate the “theatre of immediate intervention” in contemporary theatre and in public sphere.

The article discusses twelve productions based on The Tempest shown in Polish theatres in the years 2012-21, a decade whose challenges included escalation of the migration crisis, increasing climate change, social and political unrest around much of the globe, and the covid pandemic, but which was also marked by important Shakespearean anniversaries. In order to inspect the play’s significance for contemporary Polish audiences the productions are scrutinised in relation to four categories of interrelated issues: modification of characters, depiction of suspended reality connected with sleep, dreaming, memory and recollection, references to current social and political challenges, and employment of the play’s meta-artistic potential. The productions’ interpretative tendencies reveal a number of common denominators which are analysed with an aim of explaining why, in today’s Poland, the possibility of reconciliation and return to some form of re-established order that the playwright contemplates is seen as very difficult, if not impossible.

Opis:
This piece of work is an attempt, grounded in artistic practice, to describe several key aspects of the mechanisms of hierarchy, power and violence in Polish theatre taking into account the perspective of a woman director. These mechanisms are currently the subject of theoretical studies and discussions within the community. In this paper I would like to propose a look “from the inside.” There is a historical and theoretical part followed by an attempt to analyse the mechanisms of power-sharing in theatre based on a discussion on competitions for the position of theatre manager, taking into consideration the criteria that discriminated against women for years, and the unspoken assumptions. This is followed by a self-reflection on the evolution of the author’s own working methods as a director with almost twenty years of artistic experience, and finally a description of the hierarchical relationships between an actress, a director and a manager, and of the political mechanisms involved. The second part of the paper is empirical in nature and is based primarily on the author’s experience of working at the Teatr Polski in Warsaw as well as her active participation in professional and public debate. It also describes the tension between the possibility of individual professional success and the permanence of anachronistic and violent systemic mechanisms of functioning of the institution of theatre.

The author of the article attempts to recreate the famous staging of Dziady directed by Kazimierz Dejmek, in order to demystify the spectacle. The performance is analysed in terms of art, taking into account the political situation (March 1968). In order to establish the facts, the author uses an assistant’s script, the recollections of the witnesses of the release of Dziady and fragments of the performance. The reconstruction of the staging enabled the researcher to conclude that it was artistically valuable, but it was the political situation at the time that played the most important role in popularising that interpretation of the drama.

Adaptation of different literary texts is one of the important practices in Polish contempo-rary theatre after 1989. Adaptations are being undertaken by the creators of the authorial theatres, directors of the repertory theatres and young artists who began their professional career in the theatre in the late nineties and after a year 2000. The article discusses three different types of adaptory practices. Krystian Lupa's adaptations are a kind of creative dialogue with literature that becomes a base for individual and evolving esthetics of his own theatre. Krzysztof Warlikowski struggles with the tradition and exceeds it. Directors repre-senting critical theatre use classical dramatical and epic texts to build a dialectical discourse with Polish “ready¬ made world”.

Opis:
Andrzej Wajda is a renown Polish theatre and film director, whose achievements have been recognised by theatre and film artists and critics all over the world (he has been awarded an Oscar). He has directed four versions of Hamlet and two versions of Macbeth (one for Polish television in 1969, the other for the Stary Theatre in Kraków in 2004). I propose to look at three productions to trace Wajda’s evolution in his approach to Shakespearean tragedy: Hamlet III, scenes of which were first staged in the Royal Castle of Wawel in Cracow, and then at the Stary Theatre in 1981. It was a Hamlet which addressed significant Polish problems (Wawel being a symbol of Poland, its historical power, the seat of the powerful Jagiellonian dynasty).1 The context of the production is also very significant: the time of the Solidarity festival, as it is now called in Poland (on 13 December 1981 martial law was introduced in Poland), so the performance could not help avoiding political issues. The director’s next take at Hamlet (his fourth attempt) occurred in 1989, another critical year in the Polish post-war history; surprisingly enough, the production was not so much Poland-oriented or politically involved as the previous version; instead Wajda poses questions about the condition of theatre in Poland and anticipates a less pressing need for politicising theatrical performances in the years to come. His Macbeth in turn was produced at the time of Poland’s engagement in the war on terrorism in Iraq; modern war of the ‘civilised world’ becomes a most significant frame for the production, but not the only one. The performance, showing the Macbeths as an elderly couple who are confronted with possibly the last chance to make a difference in their life, touches upon both getting old and a long-term marriage.
