    Introduction and aim. With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare workers continue to work selflessly and intensively despite many occupational hazards. Although various studies have been carried out to evaluate the experiences of nurses who play an important role in the fight against the pandemic and the effects thereof, qualitative studies carried out using the photovoice technique are very limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the experiences of nurses working during the COVID-19 pandemic and show the impact that COVID-19 has had on nurses’ work and daily life using creative photographic data. Material and methods. This qualitative study employed a participatory action research design, and photovoice technique was used. Research data were collected from nurses working in COVID-19 clinics of various hospitals between May and September 2021. Data analysis was performed via a phenomenological interpretation method. Results. Five themes emerged from the data: (1) burnout, (2) anxiety, (3) social isolation, (4) emphasis on professional value, and (5) the value of life. Each theme was presented with representative photographic and written narratives provided by the participants. Conclusion. The findings of this study suggest that nurses experience problems such as burnout, anxiety, and social isolation. All the participants associated these problems with the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on work and daily life. On the other hand, the participants emphasized professional value and the value of life despite all the negativities and risks.

    The purpose of this article is to draw critical attention to the use of photovoice as an anti-oppressive method in research with Aboriginal peoples. In response to the historical vulnerability of Aboriginal peoples to research that “wants to know and define the Other,” anti-oppressive methods deconstruct taken-for-granted research models and focus on privileging Indigenous voices, political integrity, and justice strategies. Anti-oppressive approaches are connected to emancipation and cannot be divorced from the history of racism. Theoretically, photovoice aligns well with anti-oppressive goals, using photographs and storytelling as a catalyst for identifying community issues towards informed solutions. Having roots in Freireian-based processes, photovoice has the goal of engaging citizens in critical dialogues and moving people to social action. Drawing on our recently completed photovoice study, Visualizing Breast Cancer: Exploring Aboriginal Women’s Experiences (VBC), we demonstrate that photovoice seems successful in enhancing critical consciousness among participants, but that outcomes may not be disruptive. While photovoice has the potential to develop counter-hegemonic anti-oppressive knowledge, this may be lost depending on how the research process is encountered; thus, we propose the implementation of a revisionary model which incorporates a culturally safe anti-oppressive lens.

    Celem artykułu jest odpowiedź na pytanie czy metoda PhotoVoice może być stosowana w działaniach edukacyjnych online prowadzonych z dziećmi w wieku 10–11 lat. Autorka opisuje cele i założenia PhotoVoice oraz procedurę działania prowadzonego tą metodą. Pokazuje też, przed jakimi wyzwaniami etycznymi i organizacyjnymi stoi badacz i organizator projektu pragnący stosować PhotoVoice. Przeprowadzony projekt pilotażowy nie dał jednoznacznej odpowiedzi na pytanie badawcze, ale wskazał kierunki, w których powinny być prowadzone dalsze eksploracje. Pozwolił na pokazanie, w jaki sposób należy zmienić procedurę PV, przy zachowaniu głównych założeń i celów metody, aby mogła być ona realizowana w pracy z dziećmi w klasie czwartej szkoły podstawowej. Zmiany dotyczyć powinny przede wszystkim większego zaangażowania i upodmiotowienia uczniów, przeprowadzenia miniprojektu poprzedzającego projekt właściwy oraz ograniczenia roli nauczyciela do udziału w ostatnim etapie działania, tj. prezentacji prac fotograficznych. Jednocześnie projekt pilotażowy pozwolił stwierdzić, że praca online może stwarzać dodatkowe wyzwania związane ze stopniem zaangażowania uczniów w projekt i w refleksję na temat zdjęć oraz problemy z otwartą dyskusją na temat zmian w najbliższym środowisku edukacyjnym.
    The aim of this article is to find an answer to the question of whether the PhotoVoice method can be used in online educational research conducted with children aged 10–11. The author describes the aims and methodology of PhotoVoice. The paper also presents the ethical and organisational challenges faced by researchers wishing to use PhotoVoice in educational settings. The conducted pilot study did not provide an unequivocal answer to the research question, but indicated the directions in which further research should be conducted. It showed how the PV procedure should be changed, while maintaining the main objectives of the method, enabling its implementation in work with children in the fourth grade of primary school. The changes should include greater involvement and empowerment of students, conducting a mini-project preceding the actual project, and limiting the role of the teacher to participation in the final stage, i.e. the presentation of photographic work to decision-makers. At the same time the pilot project made it possible to conclude that the involvement of students in the project, in-depth reflection on photographs and discussions and motivation to propose changes in the immediate educational environment pose additional challenges if the project is conducted online.

    PhotoVoice to jakościowa, eksploracyjna, partycypacyjna metoda badania potrzeb stosowana w naukach społecznych. Służy ona do wyznaczania obszarów aktywności danej społeczności wymagających działań zmierzających do wprowadzenia pozytywnych zmian. PhotoVoice może być również wykorzystywany w badaniach edukacyjnych jako narzędzie badania potrzeb szkoleniowych lub opisywania, przez uczestników projektu, ich sytuacji edukacyjnej lub życiowej mającej związek i wpływ na uczenie się. Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia projekt pilotażowy, jaki został przeprowadzony podczas lektoratów języka polskiego akademickiego dla cudzoziemców na Uniwersytecie Kardynała Stefana Wyszyńskiego w Warszawie, dla którego inspiracją była metoda PhotoVoice.
    PhotoVoice is a qualitative, participatory, community-based needs assessment method used in the social sciences. PhotoVoice can also be used in educational research as a tool for learning and language needs assessment and analysis. Such analysis would lead to setting up learning goals or describing issues that can be the subject of further activities, such as improving learning conditions, teaching methods or the curriculum. PhotoVoice is an exploratory research method. This article describes a pilot project inspired by the PhotoVoice method that was conducted at the Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University in Warsaw among first year students attending classes of academic Polish for foreigners.
